I have a similar binder system for my recipes! When I find a recipe online that I want to try I print it & tuck it into the front cover’s folder flap. When we try it, if we like the recipe I then hole punch it and add it into the category it belongs in. Also, I really enjoy your organizing and day in the life type videos! ❤️ Great job on the cabinets, the curtains, and the binder!

Great reorganizing, Shannon. The curtains look great, too. I don't think they are too short at all. Better to be a smidge above the windowsill than dragging on it. 😊♥

Another great video. I also have a small kitchen and I always have to evaluate the things I keep in the kitchen. I keep the recipe books in the room right next to the kitchen, so I can have a space for kitchen stuff.

Hi Shannon! Love the cute curtains! You make me feel like I do accomplish much in a day! ( I am retired and don’t want to waste a minute of it!). I must do many little things that add up as I walk several thousand steps/day!
I love to garden , reorganize, read, cook new dishes, and most of all, crochet!

Thank you for your videos. I always enjoy them. I also have my recipes in a 3-ring binder. I have many divisions so I can find what I'm looking for . I now have several binders. Nothing goes in the binders unless we've actually used the recipe and both my husband and i like it. After watching your video, it reminds me I need to go through the binders and see what recipes we are no longer using and get rid of them.

The curtains turned out so cute! What a great find. Have you ever tried Better Than Bullion broth? It’s a glass jar of concentrate you store in the fridge, takes up much less space and produces less waste than buying already diluted broth. I’ve seen it in the soup aisle at the grocery store and at Costco.

Ha ha. I made my recipe books like that also. I had a ton of leftover plastic protector sheets from back in my music days so I just slide the paper into the sheet and stick it in the binder. One and done.
My “pantry” ha ha. It’s a piece of furniture but it died so I had to get a similar sized thing (another issue was that it’s a small old kitchen with little space so it had to fit in that small corner. Plus it had to have legs Bcuz a floor vent is right under it). Found it tho but I have to still paint and sand it.
The old cheap one (particle board lol) surprisingly held up for about 4 years or so. Bowing on one side so middle shelves kept falling. Got tired of playing Jenga with it tho so I got the new/old REAL WOOD one.

I love your curtains! The curtain hooks are a neat way to hang them. They are just the right length. I’m curious about how you will make your dry beans. I use mostly canned beans, but I think dry would be healthier without the salt and I wouldn’t have the cans to recycle. I’m glad you tried the banana bread without the oil. It does taste different, but after a while you get used to it and it is delicious. 😊

Hi Shannon! I have a top for making beans from dried beans. I use a mini crockpot ( the kind for dips) and it’s perfect for 2/3 c to a cup of dried beans + water. I don’t pre-soak. I just rinse and put in with water first thing in the morning and they cook all day and are ready at dinner time. 2/3 cup dried is equivalent to one can of canned beans. 🫘

Love how your pantry turned out, and you didn't have to buy new bins. I think the binder is a great idea. And if it gets too fat, then you buy an extra binder and can divide the categories between the two. Something I've been wanting to do. I'm just too lazy!

The first cabinet for baking supplies - could add a 2nd shelf, the same height as the risers. I realize you probably already had the risers, just thinking a shelf would look nice. I have a 1945 craftsman style house - I have a walk-in pantry. It's the 1st one I've ever had, in the many houses I've lived in. I'm sold on them, every house should have one. Mine is 4' wide by 8' deep; one side is shelves, 2' off the floor to the ceiling, spaced at 1' a part, 1' deep. The other side is the same, except the back of the fridge is in taking up a bit of space, it's inset from the galley kitchen. Across the narrow end are more shelves and a shelf above the door. The door is in the dining room, made from the same tongue grove boards as the walls, so you don't notice it's even there; we call it the "secret room"!

Love the binder idea! I made that switch myself about 3 years ago and use it regularly! I made mine into a scrapbook of sorts too... Adding the well loved and worn recipe cards or scraps of paper onto pretty paper and adding notes where applicable (this was from grandma so and so or great aunt's recipe etc)...
We are getting ready to move and the new house has no pantry space and just open shelves over the counter... Looking for creative ideas for food storage as we have a large family and cook 100% at home 🤪

Everything looks very nice😊 How wonderful that Grant made you a little shelf for the time being. The curtain fabric is adorable; you are a good seamstress. I am not sure if it was in this video or another one, where you were showing almonds in a container in your cabinet. We buy them in bulk like that too at Costco. This might not be a problem for you, but we keep ours in the refrigerator because nuts can go rancid easily. Actually, we keep our walnuts and our almonds in the freezer in the bags that they come in but then, I pour out some into a jar to keep on the shelf with condiments in the fridge, for easy access. You might not have a problem with ran
cidity, but just thought I would mention it. That's amazing that you are going to learn to make your
    own flour ...Wow🎉!
No walk in pantry here just regular cabinets ;) and it works❤
P.S.Do you recommend the decorative film on your back door glass? We need something for patio door glare.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  2 місяці тому +2

Hi Julia, Thank you for telling me about the almonds. We usually go through them pretty quickly, but that's a great idea to store them in the freezer. Someone had mentioned storing flour in the freezer and I have been doing that with our backup flour now. I like the decorative film in the window in our kitchen, but the corners of the film are starting to lift off. It could have been that I didn't apply it right, but that is my only compliant. I really like that we don't need to have a curtain there anymore. =) I hope you are having a good weekend.

Lots of common sense applied to kitchen organization. I liked seeing many hard containers you've used for oatmeal, flours and other dry goods. I have a bit of advice for anyone who is storing dry goods in original packaging -- flours, sugars, spices, legumes, mixes, etc. It's only a matter of time before one will either unknowingly bring an infested product into the kitchen or attract insects that will penetrate the paper or thin plastic wrapping. Then the insects will move from one product to another, resulting in heartache, waste and lost time and money recovering rom the infestation. This is doubly true in high-humidity areas. I visited a friend on Hawaii and we spent an entire day cleaning out her pantry where bugs had moved from one box and bag to another. What a waste!
Please begin moving everything to impervious plastic (not thin bags) or glass containers. The effort will pay for itself. Even if you open something and find insects, they will be limited to that one container. It does to have to be expensive -- Peanut butter jars and coffee containers work well. Old vitamin bottles can hold spices for example. Also, keep things high in oil like nuts in the freezer or refrigerator. Otherwise they will become rancid before you use them.
Keep up the good work! Happy cooking from a 50+ year homemaker.

Did you link the banana bread recipe? I don't see it. Whenever I try to substitute whole wheat flour in a banana bread recipe, it comes out too dense. Hmm, maybe it's from using applesauce in place of the oil. Or maybe the combination. So I slice the partially raw bread, lay the slices on a cookie sheet, bake the slices, then make bread pudding.

Your kitchen always looks so nice; and cupboards do need attention to stay organized. The curtains are so cute and I love the brighter pattern. I do like to make as much as I can from scratch, like dry beans, but do keep a small amount of canned items, for unexpected days that come up and not enough time. I have never thought about milling flour; something to think about. Thanks for sharing.
