Retired here, raised 3 kids and lots of critters. This tip may not be for everyone, but it continues to work for me. I keep a running list of what I want/need to accomplish, so if I have a few minutes I can get a small job done(and cross it off-so satisfying), and nothing falls through the cracks. Thank you for your tips, it adds to making our life simpler and helps our kids /grandkids too. Life changes and the tips do too.

I do the same thing because i have a back injury. I can only do so much until my back is on fire but I eventually get it done! So satisfying to cross those jobs off my list!

My mother pinned a long sheet of paper onto the back door filled with jobs for my father to do as he was a carpenter & was working for others 5 1/2 days per week. So she got all the jobs done she wanted & were crossed off the list one by one. At the end, we went on a road trip.

The BIGGEST helpful tip I ever got was putting a hamper (or two) in every family member's room. I went from sorting 7 people's clothes to not sorting but directly doing a load and bringing the whole basket of clean clothes back to the room I got it from. Now as the kids are older, they all do their own laundry! Huge blessing.

I simplified when I started working full time by having each family member do their own laundry. My kids were in highschool at the time but I think they could have done this even younger.

My kids started doing their own laundry at 9- by the time they left for college they hd learned it’s better to do smaller loads, it’s better to actually fold it and put it away, etc. 😂 It helped a lot for me to give them that responsibility. We use towels several times and dry them in a rack behind the bathroom door.

Americans seem to be obsessed with little kids doing their own laundry. I see that all over the place in the internet - with Americans. And Americans only. I never saw that from any other country. To me it seems to make no sense at all. So how long does it take for a 9 year old with their teeny tiny little clothes to fill up the washing machine? Three weeks? More? Or do they run the machine with two T-Shirts, two pants and four of their little socks every other day? That's something you would NEVER see in Europe. Ever. I mean this honestly with all respect. Seriously. But overall I don't think - and I'm not the only one to say so, even Americans who've been in any European country for a while say so - there is any other country in the world as wasteful and thoroughless with the ressources as America. No offense intended and with all due respect. But letting the water run endlessly in the sink, using the dryer constantly, eating from plastic plates or paper plates on a daily basis, using food where every bite is wrapped individually or drinks in the tiniest bottles - no other country does that.

Your home is so pretty. Having less definitely leads to being able to be organized much more easily. When we moved abroad, we got rid of a lot of "stuff." Shedding the excess has made our lives so enjoyable. Yes, we kept what was most precious, but I never ever want to get back to the excess we had before. It made it hard to stay organized. Thank you for this video. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. :)

I think the things you do lead to an unstressed household for everyone.
A lot of the things you do have fallen by the wayside or haven’t been taught to people these days. I am much like you with how I take care of our home but I am 63 years old and watched my mother do them. It’s a good feeling when things are taken care of. Love your videos. Say hi to your Mom.

Today one of your tips came in handy! I was at a thrift store and picked up a pretty basket. Normally I would have purchased it at such a good price. But I remember from one of your videos you ask “where would this go in our home?” I asked myself this question and then put it down. Thanks for the great strategy!!🎉🎉🎉

  • @jekalambert9412

I naturally gravitate toward your clean and declutter regularly advice as well as cleaning the kitchen while cooking. I always keep a donation box so I can drop off no longer wanted items at the thrift shop when I'm shopping there. I keep a shopping list in my phone. It's organized by store. When I need or want to purchase something, I add it to the list immediately when I think of it. If I'm shopping for curtains or something to fit a specific space, I include the measurements on my list. I keep a tape measure in my purse because I often shop 2nd hand and I can make sure the item fits when I'm considering a purchase. If the item is something I might find a several stores, it goes on the shopping list under each of the stores. My grocery list is organized based on the store layout, meaning the produce section is the first section I encounter when I enter the store, so produce items go at the top of my list. Next is bulk, then general merchandise, etc.
I like your idea of cleaning the fridge before shopping - I usually clean mine when I'm putting my groceries away. I'm not a minimalist nor someone with a tendency to impulse buy. It really helps to have a general idea of what I'm looking for. I'm also not a "schedule" type person and absolutely couldn't eat the same thing for breakfast every day. Stuff gets cleaned when I notice that it needs to be cleaned. My art studio is a WIP mess. The rest of the house is relatively clean and organized using many of your techniques. People laugh when they're looking for something and I say "it's on the right hand side of the bottom drawer next to the stove". Knowing where things are definitely gives me peace of mind.

Your home looks wonderful, I'm quite envious!!! Thanks for sharing!
My wife hosted Bunco last week and I spent the four or five days before it, cleaning, moving clutter from the main floor to a pile in an unused bedroom. I'd like to get rid of all of the stuff I moved, but she's not having any of it. I try to set a good example with my personal stuff, but I'm not having much luck encouraging her to follow my lead.
The main floor still looks pretty good, but I know that it won't last long...

bb, I know what you're experiencing as I also have a wife not on board with minimalism. As much as I have decluttered and slowed the influx of new items, she has added exponentially with Amazon and Kohl's etc. boxes arriving regularly. It can be frustrating, but I try to focus on my sphere of influence in the home. Best of everything to us both in leading by example!

I have to say as I've been decluttering and letting things go its been an amazing feeling and I feel our house can breath. We've let go of so much its kind of shocking really. I still need to do the basement and attic but I'm having surgery next monday so they will have to wait til I'm better or fall time when it's cooler in the attic. But overall having less makes dealing with what we do have and cleaning so much easier.

I always get so confused when people talk about spouses "helping" with the household. They are not 'helping'. It's not your household, your dirt, your laundry... It's the families. So it's up to everyone to do their part about it. And that is not "helping" (which suggests that it is your job, really, and they are just being nice), it's just doing their jobs as well. *shrug*
Other than that - keep it going, you rock!

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Місяць тому +7

Well, that is why I said everyone chips in and helps out. That meant including me. I don't really know any other way to word it except we all work together. =) To clarify I just meant we all help to keep the house going not that they help me and it's my job. But I know a LOT of people where the mom is the only one doing everything and that is why I mentioned this. I hope you have a great week.

As a stay at home mom I am comfortable with my role as a homemaker. My husband works very hard to earn a living. So when he helps me I do appreciate it. It’s okay for spouses to have different roles. God created all of us with equal value but that doesn’t mean that we are exactly the same. Just like he is the one who cleans the gutters out. I appreciate that he takes care of heavy lifting outside. It’s not a competition. Moms can create a soft place to fall for their families and husbands appreciate that.

If you want to change your laundry life, keep your socks pinned together. Ours are safety-pinned together in the drawer and get repinned as soon as they come off our feet to get tossed in the laundry. No hunting for socks to match up when putting away fresh laundry, no lost singles, and no shade mismatches from dark colored socks, like navy, because a newer and older version of the same sock have been paired up during laundry folding. The socks are monogamously married from the day of purchase 😂.

I love this! I have an even easier hack! I replaced all our socks with the same type- men’s ankle socks… half are black and half are grey! It’s my mate and I plus teen girls, if there is a holiday or special set they keep in the underwear drawer but the rest go in a sock basket! Easy

Great idea! I do something similar, but I just use a small delicate/lingerie bag for socks. I don't use the safety pins, and obviously, you would need to separate lights/darks if you have them. I do this with bras and underwear as well (in a separate bag), and it really does simplify laundry. I hang to dry, so having like-items already sorted saves a LOT of time! Just toss the socks into the bag as you remove them for the day, and you're set! It comes in handy, too, because you never know when you might need just a bit more laundry to have a full load...so just toss one of those delicates bags already pre-sorted into the load. Now, you're ahead...it's great!

All great tips as usual. Especially like the towel tip for multiple people households, I do not jot want to share a towel. I only grocery shop once a month; but I'm retired, live alone, vegetarian and dont cook traditional meals, it works for me. I group errands, take care of a few while out vs separate trips.
And - Birch mattress review - I will be replacing my current one this year. I have done some research and Birch was one I was considering, so glad to hear your opinion. Also - i will be replacing my old, very heavy canister vacuum; it works great but too heavy for my mobility issues now days. I like the feature of yours, in this video, can use the hose separately. Can you share what brand yours is and uour opinion? TY

I live alone so there is no one to blame messes on. I am amazed at the amount of dishes I get dirty. I know part of the problem is my water glasses ,I get a new glass each time I get a drink of water. I always seem to have a sink full of dishes . I wash dishes once a day sometimes twice but still wind up with a lot of dishes.

You could have a large reusable water bottle for the day and use that throughout the day and then at the end of the day wash it for the next day. In my home each child has their colored cup for water. They have a “staton” for water and they leave their cups there and they use them throughout the day and at the end of the day I just throw them in the dishwasher for the next morning.

I'm keeping my junk drawer though ;-) I know if something doesn't have its designated spot, that's where it is (velcro cord ties, e.g.) and once in a while it's fun to dig thru and discard.

I should get rid of the bathrooms and the floors so that I don’t have to clean those! Brilliant idea! Thanks for the advice! I’m kidding but in all seriousness, yes this video is great advice, I’m always looking for things to simplify my life but i seems I’ve been able to apply most things and there isn’t much more to do, you can only do so much to simplify our lives without getting rid of people and actual rooms like the bathroom (my least favorite chore) lol Here’s my motto, the less stuff the better./the less on your schedule the more time.

Where we live we have a gas dryer so it's practically free to use the dryer. So I guess it's just a convenience kinda like using a dishwasher, clothes washer, or any other appliance. Our gas bill for the whole month is usually around 15 to 20 dollars and that includes gas dryer, stove/oven, and heating our water for a family of 5.

“If you find yourself overwhelmed and stressed out at home.” (It’s not for lack of simplicity for some of us. Meh).
For me it’s rather complicated. I have found that I prob need a diff home. This is just some house I live in. It’s not “home.” There are times when you discover that that you just can’t polish a turd no matter how much you do to personalize it, push away the riff raff and pare it down
All of this really DOES help tho. It at least keeps me sane until I can finally get out of here. And that will be very soon. Can’t wait! Lol.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Місяць тому +3

Hahaha I had to laugh at "polish a turd" Believe me when I say I have also lived in places like that and I can relate to what you are talking about. When we lived in NZ we couldn't afford a good place. We had to live in a cold damp moldy place and it wasn't fun. That is great you will be able to move to a better place and I hope you love it. =)

@@shannontorrens1 lol. Aw shucks thanks! Def sense of humor helps a LOT also. 😅😅 In my case it’s other stuff too besides the dump setup (lol) but it will be good to nix it all in one swoop. Moving is going to solve a LOT of unnecessary problems.
Or as the minimalist mantra goes….I don’t need all this in my life. Understatement of the century. Lol. Sometimes that’s your zip code and entire current surroundings. 😬
Whatever “new” problems it may bring….I’d rather have those…or just take my chances with any new randomness. Lol. Roll the dice…not polish the turd. 🤣🤣

Yes, have a designated place for everything, and for most items, you only need that item in one location. You may want to have a pair of scissors in the kitchen and a pair in the office. Or you might keep some batteries in your kitchen and some in the garage, but you do not need them in more than one or two spaces in your house. Otherwise, you just lose track.
