It’s really worth having jewelry that you find in your grandma’s belongings appraised, even if you think it’s just costume jewelry. I come from a lower-middle-class family but I was shocked at how much the random jewelry in my Grandma’s jewelry box fetched through consignment.
I’m currently having to clear out my Mum’s bungalow, & I’ve had to travel halfway round the world to do it. Thankfully I have my husband with me plus my sister & her husband who live here. My son will join us for a time too. Not only are we clearing it, but we are living amidst all the mess as well, and trying to keep up with other overseas work and obligations and care for Mum. We already cleared our parents’ large house 7 years ago when our Dad died, and now here we are again. Mum is now in a nursing home and needs few possessions, but we are sorting through a lifetime of clutter. We are all emotional wrecks! I searched for videos to give me some comfort on a sleepless night, and yours is so beautiful, warm and professional compared with many other UA-camrs attempting to do a similar thing.
❤you have my sympathy. I have finished ,with help, emptying a 2 bedroom house plus sheds, of a gentleman now in dementia care. He is my good friend. 30 years of friendship and arguments. It's taken a month. He kept EVERYTHING, including very old receipts from years back. I'm exhausted, traumatised and grieving, though he's not yet dead.
I’ve been working on this for a long time with you. I talked to my son and his wife as well as close relatives and found some things to give to family. Mostly items were donated or tossed . Now we are moving to a retirement community and it is so much easier to get ready. Thank you for hints and advise you have provided on this journey ❤
@@laneyj3642 I never had a lot of stuff, but after my parents passed my siblings and I had to go through the house discarding there belongings, we were all married and had our own things so it was heartbreaking that we couldn’t not keep 98% of their things, never mind the work involved , I promised my kids would never have to deal with that. I just went thru each drawer, closet, etc and if I didn’t need it, love it, I donated .. I have been simplifying our home for several years, and have a capsule wardrobe. We are putting our farm on the market this month, so had a big push to finish this process and spring clean the farmhouse. We are only in our 50s, but early retirement will enable us to focus on our hobbies/interests and travel (and thinking about possible income creation at home or in our new community - we are moving closer to family). It just makes sense to live without the friction of clutter
My mother passed 2 years ago for lung cancer. After 2 years, recently I and my father could start decluttering her things, like cloths and lots lots of kitchen stuff... furniture's, linens... I think it will be a long time process(my not married twin sister insists keep then all not throwing away... ㅠ ㅠ, she still has not recovered from the shock of losing our mom emotionally... have been denied all this situaion) but my father needs to downsize the house and also Swedish cleaning because he is 73 years old and wants to live in tidy and neat home. If I had had this kind of opportunity decluttering home with my mom like you before my mom's dying... I pray your mom live long long healthy and stay with you having good time with you. It's so good to see a mom and daughter together decluttering(my favorite)
I heard about Swedish Death Cleaning on your channel. I immediately subscribed and purchased Margareta Magnusson’s book. The book and your content have been so helpful! My mother recently passed away and I was burdened with going through her possessions. She was a collector… I do not want the same experience for my kids. This segment at 45:18 about photos is a God send! I too have photos from my great great grandparents. My children (22, 24 & 27 years old) do not want these. I love the dynamic between you and your mom. It reminds me of how my mom and I interacted while working together. Lots of laughter and silliness sprinkled throughout. Thanks for your content! It’s helpful and fun!
I enjoyed this refresher. I just moved and have decluttered much this last summer, 2 weeks in June and all of July. I used your mom’s positive attitude to guide me. My youngest son and daughter in law have been there to help n guide me but Not Push. I actually met a person that got out of an abused situation and I had enough kitchen dishes, pots n pan gadgets etc to set her kitchen up. She liked my beach theme so I shared ocean pics, I had a queen size new sheet set, blanket n towels all new to share with this lady. I was fortune enough to help her and pulled much out of my home. Thanks Shannon n Kathi for your positive power cleaning out🎉

Shannon, you are so blessed to have your mom in these videos. My mom passed when I was 35 yo. in 1998. I would love to have these memories made with my mom. Cherish your sweet Mama🥰
Cathy, you’re making me very happy that my Mom didn’t collect any kind of knickknacks (which she called dust catchers). And because I didn’t grow up with them, I don’t have any either, except for a few little ones that my daughter gave me years ago. Nevertheless, I certainly do admire how many of yours you are letting go. Great work! And it’s always fun watching the two of you working together in each other’s homes!

I have done this for years. I have been getting rid of stuff I know longer use to want. I am 78 now and still doing this, it will save my kids when I die that they don’t need to go through the sorting and giving away.
Looks like you and your mom enjoyed working on this project together! Her basement looked pretty darn neat even before the declutterring. BTW, I don’t eat meat either. ❤
So proud of your mom/Cathy ! The reward is more camping. I did a combo of KonMari and Swedish, having no idea that is what I was doing. Then I came upon Project 333 and it has made my life so simple, but also surrounded me by the true things that bring me joy. Holding on to everyone else's "stuff" I realized I wasn't just an "old soul" but the keeper of family history. So much of my "treasures" were farmed out to relatives that truly wanted them. I also wrote a note about the history, the significance or occasional funny stories. My daughter is a minimalist, but appreciates the possibility of repurposing family furniture ( Iron bed & steam chest) And a cousin has decided to take a church pew that was milled by his grandpa ( he also had talks on that pew about "life" so it's sentimental to him) THANK YOU SHANNON & CATHY FOR ENTERTAINING US, while also educating on what really matters. Hugs to you both ! Can't wait to see more camping memories.
I don’t usually watch such long videos, but I stayed until the end for this one. Watched for ideas I hadn’t thought about. I am 76 yrs. and a widow. My husband kept everything.❤

You and your mom! Gold! My very VERY favorite declutter channel! I could watch you both all day! I have tried to work with my near hoarder status mom… no luck. She says “you or grand kids may not want it now, but someday! When I was young I did not know these were treasures… bla bla. It’s a struggle. I’ve given up… but you too are adorable. And she should be on every episode! I adore her. And you together are adorable!
Awesome compilation Shannon. I am a fan of you for several years. You and your Mom have inspired me in my journey. Decluttering has been life changing for me. I hope to start gently helping my elderly parents to sort their home, labelling things of significance so they do get lost or overlooked. ☮️🫶
I always enjoy your videos so much, Shannon. They are very inspiring and leave me with a good feeling. In reality, Swedish death cleaning started generations ago. I helped my Swedish grandmother do her cleaning back in the 1960s when I was a teenager. The concept did “grow legs“ after books were published a few years ago. ❤ I have recently learned a new incentive for getting rid of things - selling your house and moving across country! I am getting rid of stuff that I have not used in years. People used to say if you want to be motivated to clean your house, you should pretend that you’re having a party the next day. Maybe you should pretend that you’re moving! 😅
I watched this whole thing even though I’ve already seen all the videos. You can’t have too much inspiration. I paused this video at least twice to get up and declutter. I decluttered all my towels. I have two towels that are going to a relative because they’re her color scheme and I have a bag full of towels that are going to either the groomer or the animal shelter, I don’t need dog towels anymore because I don’t have a dog and I already have a car towel for the car wash in my car. I got all that done while watching you and pausing it. I can’t do something and watch a video at the same time. I have to pause it because I can’t concentrate on two things at once.
I've been doing this for 7 years. It is an ongoing process & I like knowing I'm not leaving a mess behind. Grief & a normal amount of stuff left behind is hard enough. I don't think of the death part, I see it as living a lovely simplified life NOW :)
My family member is a HUGE hoarder. It's ridiculous. I'm scared to turn into them. The other thing is that she laughs about how I will be stuck with taking care of it eventually. It's not funny to me and I'm resentful.
Hi Shannon, I’m so excited to tell you that this episode was the Lightbulb episode for me!! Watching it (even though I’ve seen most of your shows already) this one did the trick! I finally realized that I need to let go of many of my things, just like your mom!! In fact I have many of the same things as your mom!! That’s when I realized I need to do this now and not later like I thought I could put it off, I need and want to be clutter free now! Thank you SO much Shannon! I love all of your shows! 👍❤️
I love the relationship you have with your mom. It looks like you have a great time. Appreciate your insights. I have been on the decluttering journey for 10 years and have moved 5 times in the last 10 years. The Swedish Death cleaning approach gives one a fresh and needed view on our belongings. Very helpful.
Really enjoyed this video and the healthy relationship you have with your mom. Im 50 and started this process 5 years ago towards minimalism after dad passed and I was left overwhelmed with the process of doing this with his 40 year old business that was extremely packed. You’re lucky your mom is receptive to this idea and can laugh during the process. My mom is a hoarder (think show) beginning with empty nest syndrome. In the beginning of this process it was very contentious and volatile. It has taken a few years and at a snails pace but this year shes finally letting things go and progress is being made. She still buys too much but has reduced her purchases compounded by a steady place of decluttering means improvement. Just wish the process was as happy bonding as your experience. You will cherish this video with your mom in the years to come.
I have similar cases for my photos, but instead of fitting it into the plastic box, I bought a fireproof photo box to store all of them in, and another to store my negatives and hard drives in.
I especially like the videos you do with your Mom, you work together so well, the photos topic are specifically helpful, they seem to multiply as they sit in storage…
Hi Shannon and Kathy! I enjoyed your video today very much! Especially the diary/journal and photo section I am definitely going to get one of those scanners (we just unhooked our printer, scanner, copier as it was once again out of ink and wouldn’t scan!)! Now to get rid of it instead of sticking on a closet shelf! Also loved the tip about getting rid of journals. I have journaled for years for my own mental health but definitely not something I would want someone to read. So out they will go! Very freeing! Have a great week! Hi from the other coasts, SC. From mom x 3 boys/young men .💕😊🏝️💙💙💙
Shannon, I appreciate how you're respectful and accepting of your mom's decisions even when you would obviously make a different decision! That can be hard to do when you're helping someone close to you.
I enjoyed each of these videos when they were first presented. Love how you and your mom interact with each other. I really like your style of decluttering, it's not the least bit stressful and presented with great advice.
I have a tile from Italy that I have on a small plate easel I bought at Dollar Tree. It’s one of the few decorative pieces on my kitchen counter but I love it.
Great job on the video and the changes in your parent's home! I appreciate the compilation of videos that really show how the process stacks up over time. I have done some decluttering with my mom, but I have backed off because I think I went a bit too hard at first. I hadn't thought of her feeling "threatened" and protective at the time. However, she has since called me when she has done some on her own. About a month ago she actually asked me to help her with a few things. I am trying to let her initiate the process. This video is encouraging - thank you!
Thank you both ❤️. My mom moved out of her house, splits her time between my house and my sister out of state. This gu ed me new inspiration to pass through her stuff again.
I am always decluttering, and have a pretty simplified home, but just now, you inspired me to clean out a cabinet and I found 8 things to get rid of. lol. I love you and your Mom so much. You brighten my day.😊
Hi Shannon, I love this compilation! Such an inspiration again. I looooove decluttering. Live in a little appartment so need a regularly declutter 😊 Great advises from you and your mum. I decluttered my kitchen last week, again a box full for the charity shop and more space, love it. Good that you leeft your Instagram for what it is. I really hate social media, only look on UA-cam positive things and a bit WhatsApp for making appointments. And: The quote on the end is great! Bye bye from the Netherlands 👋👋⚘💝🫂 oh need to say: we don't use wooden shoes since ages, its only an old boring touristic gimmic from the tourist offices here in the Netherlands 🤣🤣🇳🇱👋
I love your videos, especially with your mom. I can really relate to her struggle with the photos and the sentimental things. We were handed down things that represents our family history and trusted to hand them down. I have been decluttering for a couple years and have decided unless I can eat it, wear it or crochet it, I don’t need it!
It is so nice that you say you love going there to help mom and it is fun going through it and sharing the memories together. 😭❤️🌿that is just so sweet Shannon! Not every adult daughter would feel that way which makes it doubly hard for moms to part with many things ; the memories connected to some things are a huge part of this process! Your such a blessing to watch !
I just did my husband wardrobe with him. I asked him about his shirts and he said yeah that one didn’t fit so I put it back! We tossed that plus over half his shirts. Two garbage bag out the door and it looks brilliant. From a lifetime of hoarding it’s so freeing to let stuff go ☺️
I have so much stuff that can't be donated but I can't bear to be wasteful (3/4 full shampoos, cleansers, cotton swabs, etc and that is just in the bathroom!) You and your mom are a pleasure to watch! I love how much you laugh together!💕
As I get older, and the same was true for my Mom, it got easier to let things go. She was very conscious of not wanting to leave a burden on me to deal with. And now (64 years of age) doing the same; I give out things I can let go to family or thrift stores.
Love your videos on Swedish Death cleaning! I bought the book, and I'm even helping my friends with their projects! Thank you Shannon❤ please keep inspiring us! You & your mom are the best😊
The contents of today's show will be most helpful to people that are either at the beginning of the de-cluttering,simplifying, and/ or stuck in the middle of the process. I am about 3/4 of the way thru this process and agree it gets harder closer to the emotional things that probably need to go. I get something out of each of your programs. P.S. Shannon, the relationship with your mother is a delight to behold. ❤
So wild some vids with you pregnant and then babies straight hair curly hair it has been a journey that we’ve got to see I love it ❤️! The journey with your mom has been most helpful to me and appreciate how fun and relaxed and honest she’s been with all her vids just love her 🥰🥰Your ideas have inspired me and i Thankyouuuu ❤️✌🏻
My inlaws never decluttered a day in their lives. They lived on a farm with multiple buildings and sure enough, they packed them full of stuff from auctions and who knows where all else! So now, with both of them gone, it's up to the kids to get it all cleaned up so they can sell the farm for the inheritance they were promised. It looks to be a very long road ahead.
@@pearl9831 The property was supposed to have been sold in the near future, or even by now. The way things are looking right now, there is no "near future", so hubby and I are highly doubting we'll even get an inheritance. The brother that still lives there is ....get this.... also a hoarder. The cycle doesn't stop. It always continues.
I noticed a sprint car in your moms’s curio in the beginning of the video. My father loved sprint car races - was your grandfather a sprint car racer ??? My father has a huge wall unit full of sprint cars and seeing that in your mom’s cabinet just made me smile. Thanks for your fabulous videos and your mom is a hoot and makes your videos fabulous!!!!!
Shannon, I’m not sure that I’ve ever commented before but I have to say that you always have either a pretty top on or a pretty patterned dress. Lovely!
I’m going through this process at 54. We’ve just downsized our home and I simply can’t fit everything in, nor do I want to. I actually thought I had decluttered enough before the move but our large home with so many extra rooms fooled me into thinking we didn’t have extra stuff. Perspective is everything. 🥴
Trying to clean out a house with a mother whose mind is adled by dementia was, in a word, awful. She was furious with my siblings & me. Our father passed from cancer & she had to be moved to assisted living. Had our parents started this cleaning at 65, things would have been significantly easier. We had enough to deal with without all the extra junk on top of it.
Fung vlog. I started on Swedish death cleaning on my memory stuff a few years back... i need to do another go at it.. planned in Autumn. My mum spent covid lockdown doing ancestry. When they were allowed a bit in 2021 the visited houses and graveyards of family. She has done family trees etc.. then sends us photo copies of the originals to look at. Its been great. She has gone back hundeds of years for some sides of the family. You are so wonderful. My mum is a maximalist and boarder horder "just in case"... its a nightmare.. I dread when they have to downsize or die because I live abroad.. so it will be SO STRESSFUL to deal with.
Don't forget to take care of your estate while you are "death cleaning". Not only is there legal paperwork to do, are there things you want to sell or give to archives? Go through your photos, letters, diaries, and crafts made, such as quilts or other needlework? Photos of plays and other community events? If you know who made what, label it if you can. A documentation of items (descriptions) and photos can be useful to a regional archive. Use the time to explore your options for your items!
I think decluttering can be the first part that you can do without much sentiment involved. To me, Swedish death cleaning is for the hard to decide items and it would be good to involve the people close to you. Someone might have a special memory of an item or perhaps something you want to put aside for them, they don't want, so someone else can have it, but it also gives you the opportunity to share memories with the people you love. It can come from a more positive place.

Great review. Love seeing you and your Mom laugh. So sweet. 😊
Hi Shannon,
I’m so excited to tell you that this episode was the Lightbulb episode for me!!
I also rewatched this video! Great job ladies! Also wondering if your mom was able to sell any of the pricier items?
Thank you!
Especially the diary/journal and photo section
I am definitely going to get one of those scanners (we just unhooked our printer, scanner, copier as it was once again out of ink and wouldn’t scan!)!
From mom x 3 boys/young men .💕😊🏝️💙💙💙
Your family has a beautiful home. Love your relationship with your mum, so special you can do this with her!
Thanks for the great advice, entertainment and for providing some humor while I heal from pneumonia. Makes the time go a little faster.
Shannon, I appreciate how you're respectful and accepting of your mom's decisions even when you would obviously make a different decision! That can be hard to do when you're helping someone close to you.
Can’t wait to watch this! I’m 2 years in…developing better decluttering habits & living life more fully everyday. 🕊🌿🌷✨
I love the design of your mom's home and how it is decorated. I would love to live there!
Your mom is so much fun 🤩
I always enjoy your videos especially with your mom. Looking back at all the old videos you can see the major progress your mom has made too. ❤
I am always decluttering, and have a pretty simplified home, but just now, you inspired me to clean out a cabinet and I found 8 things to get rid of. lol. I love you and your Mom so much. You brighten my day.😊
I really like how you do the voiceover on the videos that you have already posted and then you post them again doing a voiceover! Good job!
Thank you so much!
You two are so funny together. I enjoy your videos so much! Thanks!
This was a fun watch...THANK YOU! I'm in the midst of a major declutter project, and watching all your steps was uplifting. : )
Thanks 4 sharing! I Absolutely Luv watching U n Ur sweet Momma laughing together!
THESE R THE GOOD OLD DAYS! 😉💞😃✝️
Thank you ladies for the review! Good memories and helpful hints.❤❤❤
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I absolutely love your mom! Love your videos together. :)
I just did my husband wardrobe with him. I asked him about his shirts and he said yeah that one didn’t fit so I put it back!
We tossed that plus over half his shirts. Two garbage bag out the door and it looks brilliant.
From a lifetime of hoarding it’s so freeing to let stuff go ☺️
Love your videos and love your mom too.
I have so much stuff that can't be donated but I can't bear to be wasteful (3/4 full shampoos, cleansers, cotton swabs, etc and that is just in the bathroom!) You and your mom are a pleasure to watch! I love how much you laugh together!💕
Can you donate bathroom items to women's shelters or similar? Many refuge women leave with nothing. There's also homes for children.
Shannon. - I love seeing this all again - so helpful! Thanks
Thank you!
That laugh when you asked your mom if she had more socks somewhere else 😂😂
It was sooo cutee 🥰
Swedish death cleaning is live changing. You also need to stop buying stuff. I love you and your mom.
So true!
Thank you so much! Good job on all the decluttering. =)
I love watching you guys, i think its because im same age as your mum and i have a daughter also born i 1983
So wild some vids with you pregnant and then babies straight hair curly hair it has been a journey that we’ve got to see I love it ❤️! The journey with your mom has been most helpful to me and appreciate how fun and relaxed and honest she’s been with all her vids just love her 🥰🥰Your ideas have inspired me and i Thankyouuuu ❤️✌🏻
Thank you! My hair has had a million different styles over the years LOL
Love watching you and your mom - you have inspired me with the Swedish death cleaning 🇬🇧🇺🇸🌸🌸
I enjoy this content so much 😊. You both are so amazing. Thanks for sharing!! Learned so much ❤
Wonderful, helpful compilation. Thank you!
I hope you feel grateful that they left this property for you.
I use the same black plastic system to organize my garden seeds so they are stored in dark and dry place.
That pickle fork blows my mind every time!!! 😂
Love these videos! I need to do this with my mom and dad badly!
I try to get rid of stuff and if I'm able to, then i take a picture of it if i want to remember it..takes up a lot less room.
Happy to translate the German note if you like:)
Shannon, frame your paintings and put them on a local art show. They are very good. I love the horse! 😊
I am doing Swedish Death Cleaning now!
I have a cushion my mother made and I put family brooches on it
Trying to clean out a house with a mother whose mind is adled by dementia was, in a word, awful.
This was really helpful
I have decluttered a three bedroom house and moved into a motor home and I’m still going through the process and I’m 60
Great video!!
Thanks!
