Putting the GeoPress on the ground and using two hands to leverage bodyweight makes it much easier to filter. Plus loosening the cap as Trooper said. Loving this channel - keep up the good work!
His hand was weighting down the cap, so it was probably loose but the pressure of the hand on top of the cap probably made it hard for the air to vent..
I realize that we don't know each other and I want to comment on your bugout bag video, just haven't had the time yet. Please understand that I mean NO disrespect, I just want to help people who are beginning their journey into prepping, bushcraft and/or survival. I was an Eagle Scout, Airborne Ranger, Sheriff Deputy and current first responder team leader. I also teach preparedness, bushcraft and survival. I have been using a Grayl Geopress for a couple of years and yes it works great, they are also one of the few filters that prevents virus contamination. To use the Geopress first loosen the cap so that the air can escape, then press the bottle down with both hands. Bugout bags should have multiple ways of treating water, to include purification with chemicals or ultraviolet light, disenfecting wiith heat by boiling (with a single wall bottle or cup) and filtering like with the Grayl.
Did his comment make you feel less intelligent than you did before reading it, and cause you to get frustrated with your lack of knowledge? If i had to place a bet on if you knew more, the guy in the video, or the one commenting i would put my money on the eagle scout ranger sheriff @wstewart5532
Also a Millbanks bag for prefiltration! With a shoulder strap w/velcro and caribiner you can double attach the millbanks to the outside of the geopress! When hiking/camping I always carry sawyer, iodine crystals, chlorine as well. Sometime the geo filters are on sale for 24.00 instead of 30.00. I like to pick up a couple when they are.
As well as opening cap 1/2 to 1 turn, place press on the ground and use body weigh with both palms on either side between lid and handle. Also you can use food grade silicone grease $5-6.00 tube very lightly on the gasket/seal to make it easier. DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF OIL it will destroy any filltration systems. I have a spinal cord injury and this is how I do it . 😏
I carry the geopress myself. Have been thru four filter replacements so far... I like it better than a sawyer, but not as much as the katadyn... So geopress works extremely well in it's pricepoint.
The Geopress fits nicely into the Stanley 2-cup Cook set (WalMart $15) if you leave the cups at home and set the Stanley in one of WalMart's Stainless Steel ($5) cup, which the Stanley's lid will also fit. There is room to slide 4 or 5 ladies' knee-high nylons (20 for $7) over the Geopress, then use one of them fitted inside the outer shell to pre-filter. I carry mine in an Orca (Amazon $22) Tactical Water Bottle pouch which gives me room for an Esbit Stove and fuel, a stainless spork, a Ferro Rod, a Hot Lips pad for drinking from the hot cup, and a plastic bag with coffee, tea, bouillon powder, matches, salt and pepper.
I use a Geopress, I love it! Works very very well. In fact I’m headed into the mountains of SE Oklahoma in a few days to do some backwoods camping for the Thanksgiving holiday week! Hanging out around the campfire with friends, enjoying nature and living off the land for a week! Leaving society behind! D.T.O.M. FTG!🏴☠️
Fantastic video, love you traveling around and testing the water. If you want an inexpensive cook kit, the Walmart Stanley cup will fit the Grayl Geopress.
For Hiking, camping and outdoors activities the Grail is an amazing product - Sawyer is an amazing SHTF or 1,000 mile hike product… Personally I’d recommend both, have a partner carry the Sawyer and use the Grail until you can’t 👍 Grail will always taste better and be easier to use. Sawyer will always filter 100x more gallons of water per $30-ish “Learning curve required”
Keep up the good content man you used your money and gas to prove to us about this product I myself carry a sawyer mini and all of its contents stuffed in a Nalgene with a couple coffee filters and a stainless steel nesting cup but after this video the Geopress kind of looks like a nice investment 👍
I liked the sawyer for years but now that I’ve got my hands on a Geopress I won’t be going back. Way more simple of design and not as much to carry around!
I just got in the covert black geopress 2 days ago, yet to filter its first cup. I'm sure the use I'll get from it will be what replaces my hiker pro filter.
If you had kept your hand off the top cap using two hands on the side (the padded area) it may have allowed the air to escape easier. I’ve used it a few times works well. Additionally I add flavored electrolyte powder to the clean water to make it taste better.
Bro I like your channel, watching you use the geo press was painful. I have 3 of them all for different bags and now the full size titanium. You have to open the lid when you press so it’s not that hard. Think about , watching a grown man press that hard … many women or younger kids could never use it. Therefor they would only market to men? No. I did the same thing but went back and watched videos and fig it out. Anyway, that’s all. Not talking sht or anything. Mad respect for ya and your content you put out.
Appreciate ya boss. I’ll be putting out more soon been busy like no other. The attempt you see in the video was the very first push on this geo press brand new. Gasket was not worn yet, the lid was undone just laying on the cap. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
A few suggestions for your videos which may help. Get a mic with a wind shield or film the talking bits inside. I know you said it might make it more interesting doing it in the field but with the wind, jars rolling and etc it didn’t have the desired effect. Also what test strips were you using? Info would allow people to research them and see the conditions for use, effectiveness etc. You should have done 5 sites as the more data you have the more validity the results. Small data sets don’t really tell you much and don’t allow for margins of error etc. A map showing where you took the samples from would also have been useful. Farmland, urban, industrial areas will have different pollutants and different levels. The cold water may have had an effect as it the low temperature limits bacterial growth. The test strips were hard to see so a better explanation of what we were looking at would have been nice. You said it was faint so possibly the cold had an effect? With low levels of bacteria the Grayl may have been ok with higher levels who knows? Also bacteria is only one contaminant that can cause problems. You mentioned viruses, chemicals, heavy metals which can all cause you to get sick. Maybe you could have sent off water samples to test for other pollutants? Just some thoughts and not meant to sound negative, apologies if it does. I’ve watched a few of your other ones and I like them.
Gotta vent the top on any Grayl. If you want the filter to last the full time you need to pre filter sand and big stuff out with a tee shirt or cloth. You do those two things, will save your life.
I bought a smaller version, Ultrapress in Covert Black, came with a one-way valve in the filter which is nice because I always drink water with electrolytes. Really cool piece of kit and I can't wait to be drinking sewage water when the governmen-- [REDACTED].
Your mason jar is cool in all but there’s a better way. Get you a millbanks bag and a hank of paracord and tie it to the grommet. You can grab a liter of water in hard to reach places buy throwing it or lowering it down to the source. Then reel it back in and hang it up. The sediment will naturally fall and you can pour the clear water off the top into the geopress. For me waiting for the water to drip through the canvas bag takes way too long. Check it out and enjoy.
Appreciate the feed back! The mason jar was strictly for showing me pouring the water into the geo press. The way I actually do it is zip tie the bandana to the geopress once it full cut the zip tie and filter!
Glad to see you upgraded to a grayl filter . Yes the purchase price is steep .. think about this what if you was possibly 3 days out from home like I find myself often .. due to circumstance I may wish to remain covert in my journey home .. boiling may not be an option ,, waiting 30 minutes for tablets may not be an option ..the grayl is right now and highly effective .. how ever I do keep those alternatives as a ready option also .. forgot to sub earlier .. if you’re interested check out South Georgia budget bushcraft ,, I’m an admin there .. we would like to have you aboard ,, and you can most certainly share your videos there
I think you supposed to like open the top just a little that way it's easier to push down at least I think I remember someone saying that on UA-cam but you may want to read the directions maybe it will tell you in there ... It is important for people who do reviews to do their homework. The sawyer is a filter, so yes, it will filter water pretty well, especially if the water is not super suspect. The grayl is a purifier, so it will remove far more things like viruses.
I think the price tag is a big bargain. The other lower priced filters simply can not compete with what the GP does. Have to compare apples-apples. And what price can you place on clean water to drink.
That’s a huge argument people don’t like to grapple with, is what price are you willing to pay to drink clean water? Most people couldn’t put a price tag on it because the alternative is not where you want to be! Thanks for stopping by!

Taking the cap off is required. Have to allow the air to escape to make room for the water.
When filtering the water you have to losen the cap- also you should let the river water sit for awhile for sediment to sink to the bottom.
It was loosened I think it’s because it’s a brand new one, I used the bandana for the big sediments. Have you ever tried the bandana method?
I use bandanna method
