- Thank you viewers for all your support! Reached 1,000 subs a lot faster than I expected. Thank you so much!
Out in Half Moon Bay foraging seaweed to make nori. First attempt at it, so it wasn't perfect. Let me know any suggestions to improve it!
Great vid. A more sustainable way of harvesting seaweed is it cut the seaweed at the base instead of just ripping it off the rocks. It can regenerate, as apposed to pulling the whole thing off with no further possibility of furthering new generations of growth.
Thank you, yes you're completely right. I just forgot my pocket knife that day, my bad
Outdoor Chef Life totally understand, but because you are giving info on the internets, just want to make sure your are covering all your bases, ( like the way you informed people not to step on the anemones.)
True! thanks for the input, I'll do my best in future videos
Try dropping the temperature down and cook slower/longer , actually you only want it dried not cooked. 100-150 F . Or use a food dehydrator .
In New Zealand we call it Karengo "Car eng o" , that's a short o sounds like OR not OH. The Maoris traditionally dried it in the sun and took it with them on their travels with dried fish.
Nori/Laver/Karengo has 9 times the vitamin C of an orange and heaps of Iodine. My fav thing is to cook Muttonbirds aka Sooty Shearwaters with dumplings and Karengo.... oh yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try it with smoked Chicken. And Uni we call Kina ,ours are bigger and green and coming into the season to gather . Kina are tasty when they leak a milky "Fat' liquid from the roe.I marinate them in lemon juice and raw onion then you can eat them or add coconut cream and make a kind of "Pacific Island" raw fish recipe by adding bell peppers, chilli ,lime, ginger and all those yummy things you like yourself . Love your channel :-)

I shouldn't be watching these videos every time I do I get uncontrollably hungry and for the time being I can't drive because of spinal injury and recovering from a surgery on the arch of my foot ! When you're making these videos I can feel that sea breeze I can smell whatever your cooking and my mouth just waters as you plate everything that's enough to drive me insane with hunger so thanks yet again for making me hungry ❗❗❗

I’m binging your foraging videos because this COVID pandemic has me freaked! I’m hoping to find some wild edibles in my area (Los Angeles) because it’s getting pretty difficult to find produce at these grocery stores... but also, I just find foraging for wild edible plants is just good practice and a lot of fun when hiking. Thanks for the vids!
Your show is like a survival show

Awesome video bro..
Knife Is Life!
Thank you for Going over how all seaweed is edible and none of it is poisonous in your other video where you made the miso soup, I didn’t know that… So I can’t wait to go foraging for my own
So north of the bridge Marin Sonoma the local natives gather the laver dry it and flash fry it in bacon grease and chow down.
You just winged it. Sounds fun.
Hey these videos might not get as many views as your clamming and fishing videos but as a vegan I super appreciated it and can't wait to try it on my next backpacking trip!
Imma call it now. You're going to hit a million subscribers, as long you keep it up.
Seems like a crazy call at 2k but thank you! I'll definitely keep it up

Love the stuff. It would be great if you could do a video that covers which seaweed NOT to collect- either because it's unlawful or protected, because it may be poisonous, or if it's from an area that has too high pollution levels. It would also be helpful to know which seaweeds are technically edible, but aren't quite sought after or palatable for which ever reason.
I’m calling it Right now , next year you’ll have 1million subs
Sea lettuce , that bright green one .. wash it , dry it out , wash it again . tear it up, put butter in a pot, add mushrooms , shell fish and sea lettuce... gorge yourself ..
Love your channel, cooking and the outdoors are my thing. I always wondered about cooking with seaweed. It seems all is edible if delicate enough? The one you called sea lettuce also comes in a white variety. My father said it was good for ulcers.
Wouldn't doubt it, seaweed has even known to cure cancer! Pretty much all edible, meaning non are poisonous. Definitely some are better for consumption than others.
Top Ittipat approved.
Just binged watched also. Do a fishing one next time!
Yeah I will!
Gangster shit.... taku bow to thank us... keep your videos coming... great videos... I find it pretty interesting
Yummy

It would be really cool if you would come to vancouver island and do a coastal foraging ep
I bet that would be good in or on sushi rolls to add some crunch and extra nori flavor (which I think it lacking in inside out rolls).
just under 140K, good work
I'm not sure if I'd ever try to make nori sheets for sushi either since it's so readily available now days. However I really like the idea of making my own crunchy nori snacks, seasoned to my personal taste, for munching on. Much healthier than chips. In fact, I love adding good amount of extra seasoned nori to my bowl of ochazuki then pouring in hot steaming green tea. You just gave me another great idea to try out so thank you so much for sharing.
I don't live in CA but when we go there for vacation, we normally frequent the Orange County coast. Do you know if laver grows in southern CA?
108k subs and counting bro. Keep the good stuff comin
And one week later it’s 130k
@@amos5597now its 200k

Hi Taku, you seem pretty versed in foraging edibles but if you want to learn more about low tide foraging in the Bay Kirk Lombard does foraging tours where he shows you techniques and identifying certain edibles. Yours are $50-60 and is very informative.
Yes I know of him and his tours! I own his book and I've been thinking about signing up for a tour also! I think I will do it, it'll be awesome to learn from him
