I am just gonna say that my daughter is on a similar boat in a way. We weren't too worried before because she can say words, knows her colors, numbers and letters, label things and sings a lot a too which she learned from watching, but when she started childcare at 2.5years, we realised how far she was from her peers in terms of her social skills and communication. It dawned on me, that while she can sing and say words, she wasn't really conversing with us. She can't say what she wants, she can't even point, she doesn't know her name like she doesn't hear us if we call her name, she is not understanding anything that we are saying at all. We would often see her on her own, tearing pieces of papers in the corner, or she would sing when other kids are talking because she doesn't understand them. At 3, she was diagnosed with ASD.
We started therapies after that, although we had to wait a couple of months to get a slot for a therapist. It was like a roller coaster ride. From not being able to say nor point what she wants to then echolalia and scripting - lots and lots of it. Fast forward now, she's 5, she has stopped doing echolalia. There are still some scripting but very minimal, and she is able to communicate now and can converse back n forth in non-script sentences, although at times still struggles to articulate what she wants to say but she does try to say them even when it's in broken sentences.
We used the books "More than words" and "It Takes two to talk", while we were on waitlist for therapists and found them very useful. When we first started, we struggled a lot because she would just repeat back exactly what we said like when we tried to teach her to say and point what she wants and then after many tries, she then went "I want apple, and then point" and then she points at the apple(That was her script for a while when making a request). My husband and I did a lot of role playing in front of her and felt that it made it a lot better for us in conveying what we want to teach her. So instead of telling her what she needs to say or do, I will say and action it to my husband and then my husband will respond to me.

Every child is definitely different and are on their own path. You two are already doing your best and stimulating her speech. Keep it up. My son sang before he spoke and he didn't start speaking until the age of 6 (though he did script). He had some of his receptive language but his expressive language was way behind. Now he is almost 11 and holds a conversation (for as long as his ADHD allows him to lol). I had educators tell me he would never talk and he proved them wrong. He isn't where his peers are and he may never be, but his speech grows everyday and that's what matters the most to us.

Is 18mo too early to get scared that my child will never talk? He used to say a few words like mama baba and he’d clap… but all that stopped a few months ago. He just stims and screams AH AH AH, or ayay ayay ayay… I used to think that was him expressing his excitement and I thought it was cute… but now it makes me cry. I just worry about what will happen to him when we’re gone if he never speaks. This world is so cruel. The pediatrician just said to call for early intervention so I’m waiting on speech therapy. No formal autism diagnosis yet.

My son is 4 and is still non verbal... Buuttt I do see an increase in vocalization from 3.5 to now. He has improved a lot! He can only pronounce sounds like vowels and consonants, but not whole words yet. We've been teaching him sign language since he was 18 months and that's our main form of understanding his needs. He understands what we say, but replies in signs.

    • @raisingautism8214

That’s amazing that he replies with sign and you can communicate with him 🙏 its such a struggle not knowing what they need

Love how little Emma is progressing & talking more each week! This reminds me of my daughter on the spectrum. It’s so awesome when they start using new phrases or new words! My daughter just turned six 2 months ago & last night, she prayed her very first independent prayer. It made my heart & my husband’s heart so so happy to hear her talk to the Lord on her own instead of repeating a prayer after us.

Emma is going to be a fluent speaker, that is what I believe watching her progress around a couple of years now. Dear Veronica, as you said yourself, stop being anxious about the way and the pace she is progressing, I am doing exactly the same with Roubini, imaging and hoping that next summer/ next year... etc she will have achieved what I dream of. But that is not how it goes- I believe we will see all the miracles and achievements we crave for, but not in the way and the time we have scheduled them in our minds. Turning four I think is a turning point for autism, as my daughter who turned four about a month ago ( one year smaller than Emma) is starting producing small phrases and seems connecting and communicating overall better. Sending you love and support from Greece! Thank you for your honest and wonderful videos

Wow, my daughter started off with singing too! Sometimes it’s hard to determine their speech because some kids can just repeat things or script. My daughter is now speaking in sentences when she feels like it. I think as parents we think speech progress is linear like we have expectations and you have to just give them time. It’s so hard I know 😩

So so true about autism being a spectrum & even more so about how every child is different. A family member of ours didn’t talk until she was 4. We also have a friend whose son didn’t speak a word until he turned 4. They thought he was going to be mute. Both of these people aren’t on the spectrum. Definitely goes to show that everyone is different. ❤️

Omg yes my son started with singing and echolalia. He connects the most through music! Over time, he learned through that how to use spontaneous language and will string together 3-4 word sentences now.
All I knew about autism before was working with children that were severe (banging their head, no or limited eye contact, spd, non verbal). I worked in the creative arts therapy field and had no idea how HUGE the spectrum is!! Honestly, the sky is the limit for Emma 💫

This was so fun for me to watch. My son is sort of the opposite of Emma in terms of communication skills. He is flagged for having apraxia and that really impacts his motivation to speak altogether. He usually just uses words or word approximations to request his needs. He just turned 3 and I’m always worrying he won’t speak. This was a good reminder that he is doing things on his own time. All we can do is pray and keep up with his therapies.

We would always keep our hands by our faces when we spoke to him so he would look in the direction of our faces. It encouraged him to learn our expressions and gain interest in what we were saying.
