Arguably his two biggest qualities are ones that rarely get talked about: he’s prolific and he’s a finisher. Both hugely valuable when you’re asking readers to commit time and money to a multi-book series - if I pick up a Sanderson story I trust him to tell it. Honestly, I have no idea how he churns out novels so fast! I imagine him being like an 80s keyboard player, surrounded by laptops, writing a book with each hand, then crossing arms to work on a 3rd and 4th one at the same time.

I'm planning on reading Mistborn (and in doing so, starting my Sanderson journey) before the end of the year and this made me even more excited to get into it!
I will get into Brandon Sanderson's The Mistborn Trilogy and the Stormlight Archive series, and his other works after i eventually finish reading the books on my TBR, but this was an amazing, insightful video about one of the most prolific fantasy authors in our society today💯.
My guy! Ima always remember when you recommended me Mistborn 2 months ago. Ever since ive been hooked on Brando Sando & fantasy. Forever grateful & a supporter.
I have absolutely no Brandon Sanderson experience but since I started following on other media outlets, I have bought, Mistborn era 1 and 2 and tress of the emerald sea and Elantra’s and I have more of the books on the way, the way the books and author are reviews has me confident that I need to have all the books available on hand before I start reading. Also my son is ten and he loves watching your reviews and it has turned him from a reluctant reader. We went into Half Priced books and he told me mom I think I’m ready for a big boy book. THANKS!
I think, having his work aside, what makes him stand out is his endless work with fans. He doesn’t hide, no lies, just respect and understanding. He is everywhere, and yes he is young but again i think you can see he enjoys every second of publicity. He is not snarky or rude to different theories, and ofc delivers on deadlines. I truly believe this make people enjoy his work even more. For the characters and worlds, i can say there are some questionable ones but 87% are amazing! Im glad he took WoT and changed the world forever. I will never forget those last WoT books and the life he brought. Really stands for the title GOAT ❤

I started reading Brandon Sanderson with the Stormlight Archive. I got the first book at the beginning of this year not realizing it was a series, but I am SO glad I picked it up. I just finished Oathbringer a few days ago and you are so right about the third act being CRAZY! The character development is amazing and had me rethinking my whole life, haha. I think Oathbringer is my favorite book of all time.
I just randomly watched your Top Fantasy books video and the last time I read a books was 2016. I'm a novice reader, never read a fantasy novel either but after watching your videos I ordered a whole box of ones you recommended. Finished Project Hail Mary and almost done with Sword of Kaigen! Will look forward to some Sanderson stuff in the near future. Keep the videos coming my guy.
I'm with you! I have read just about everything and everyone and whenever I come back to Sanderson it only becomes more and more clear that he is at the peak, historically. Era 1 mistborn has the most insane ending of all time, Stormlight is the greatest series ever been put to paper. That is no shade to anyone or anything else. There are amazing stories out there! Just none quite on this level.
All right u just won a subscriber not for love Brandon books like me... But for have a similar worldview as me, hope your channel grows bigger brother (and came back to read books because stormlight archive in 2020, and since then my life changed forever, finishing college, have the job the i like, got close to my brother and mom, going to the gym for 2 years now and more important be responsible and respectful in my actions)
I don't disagree as I've felt this way since I was introduced years ago! I'd be super interested in your take on "The Malazan Book of the Fallen" series. It's absolutely epic with 10 books and several spinoffs, prequals, etc. Its author, Steven Erikson is brilliant, but you've got to be patient with him. He drops the into the middle of nowhere and we're left fending for ourselves lol. By the 3rd book, you have a feel of what's going on and my second read-through was more enjoyable than the first!
"Sometimes a hypocrite is merely just a person in the process of change." (Or something like that) He seems like a great human being. And he puts up free ebook content. Not sure if i missed you mentioning it but Warbreaker is a Cosmere standalone with significant ties to Stormlight (there was a free ebook on his website but not sure if it's still there). I also watched his free class lectures on writing fantasy. Really cool. Dude teaches, writes amazing stories obsessively, and goes the extra mile for his fans. Definitely the 🐐
I’m not overly fond of the worlds that he builds. Other than Oathbreaker and first Mistborn, I didn’t enjoy his books enough to finish them. That said, he’s a prolific writer and I’ve rewatched his course at B&Y on writing several times. It’s a great series for hopeful fantasy authors.
First 🙌🏽. Haven't finished watching yet and I agree Brando Sando Is the GOAT. Just finished The Way of Kings last night and it is perfection to me. I started my journey with Mistborn Era 1, The Eleventh Metal, Elantris, The Hope of Elantris, The Emperor's Soul, White Sand Volumes 1-3 and now The Way of Kings. I'll read Warbreaker next before Words of Radiance. I'm doing a specific order to catch Easter eggs. Brandon is not only a very creative author, but also someone that truly connects with his fandom 😊.

I added Mistborn to my TBR after I finished The Rage of Dragons based on your recommendation. So I’m looking forward to it. Just have to get through my 2 books I have in front of it.
I mean, hard to disagree with this. He's an absolute POWERHOUSE author, a decent dude, and no one has done more for bringing readers into the Fantasy genre in recent years. Fun to watch the journey, and experience the Cosmere, myself. Great vid, Smitty.
I have yet to start Way of Kings. It’s been on my shelf waiting for years. I got burned out reading Wheel of Time so I’m hesitant to start a big series.
You didn’t mention it so not sure if you’ve read it yet or not, but highly HIGHLY recommend Mistborn Era 2. The cosmere connections especially come in to play in the last book of that series, plus the characters are also some of my favorites in the Mistborn series. There is also one element within that series that may have ties and connections to events in Wind and Truth.
@@Smitty1423 I agree. Be sure to read Era 2 and Mistborn: Secret History before Wind and Truth. I have a feeling certain characters from Roshar and Scadrial are about to collide, especially in regard Shallan's declaration of war at the end of Rhythm of War.
Love the video, love Sanderson. Funnily enough, though, I found him by accident. I was watching Game of Thrones with my ex-gf on summer vacation in 2015, paused it, and said, "Hold up. Before we go any further, I need to read the Song of Ice and Fire books." So one day between class and work, I walked to my favorite bookstore looking for A Game of Thrones. As I'm sure you know, however, going to a bookstore REQUIRES browsing, so browse I did. Lo and behold, a little book called Mistborn caught my eye-something about the mystery of the cover. I'd never heard of the book, I'd never heard of this Sanderson guy, but I brought it to the cash register along with A Game of Thrones. Turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. Been a huge Sanderfan ever since. I definitely have my problems with some of his books, a select few of which I outright dislike, but he's still got one hell of a batting average. He may not be my favorite author (that honor goes to the late, great Stan Lee), but he's top 5 if not top 3, and probably always will be. He's consistent, he communicates with his fans, and he puts out quality stuff. A living legend no matter how you slice it. I'm glad to have met him and had him sign my OG copy of Mistborn (I bought the fancy-shmancy leatherbound edition, but that first book will always mean more to me), and I plan to meet him again as an author some day. Working on books of my own-not necessarily like his, but fantasy/sci-fi. In any case, keep up the fun videos, man. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Wind and Truth later this year, as well as other fantasy/sci-fi writers.
I think besides Magical systems, Malazan does all of these better, including the sanderlanche. I think the bigger argument for Brandon becoming the goat is the cosmere as a whole, topped off with his output and the quality of his output, and this even leads to his non cosmere works which there is plenty of.
My friend told me his hot take that if the Cosmere had an amazing prose, maybe like the name of the wind, that it would be the greatest fantasy series of all time
Speaking of studying the map of books, once i saw the map for the shadow of gods and I saw that there was a group of mountains that was a gigantic snake i was hooked 😂. Like you cant tell me that doesn't catch the readers eye.
I remember the first time reading the Hobbit at 15 or 16, the map was the selling point for me. For years, I had been "mapping" the woods near my house and hear was book in which as I read, I could follow the character's journey on the map.
He’s one of my favourite fantasy authors, but I sense naivety in some of his works. I think his writing on colonialism and slavery (which are heavy themes in two of his biggest series) are quite childish and slightly problematic. For example, when reading Mistborn 1, I didn’t know whether I was reading a book for 13 year olds or someone in their 20s/30s - this was mostly down to how he portrayed those two themes in the book. I find that some characters can be either one dimensional and basic. Outside of that, I think he’s a great author. And the amount of knowledge he’s shared with aspiring authors is priceless. On pure writing ability and storytelling alone, GRRM is my GOAT, but Sando is top 5 for sure (but it’s all subjective)
As of right now it's Pierce brown (haven't read Sando yet). You're like me in the sense that character work is top priority and I think if you finish the rest of the red rising saga you'll really see the incredible depth of his characters
I'm going to be honest, I'm a map skipper. The geography of where people are going, the terrain, it just doesn't interest me. As long as I pick up the social structure or any kinks in the society has always been good enough for me. Studying has never been a part of my "reading for pleasure" journey. I'm certain I miss out on certain elements others get that study the maps and understand the geography of the world. I guess I can just live with that. Great video, great bloopers, great sound.
I don't think I heard you mention The Emperor's Soul. My brother got me into Brandon Sanderson with this one--it helped that it was bite-sized compared to the rest of his books. 😅
I'm way behind on this guy. I did WoK first (which I enjoyed, but was a chonker). Then I did Mistborn for a book club (which I liked, but not as much). This year I read Elantris and I loved it. Only like 22 books to go :D (I'm second guessing if I read WoR, but I obviously don't remember any of it :D ).
I just discovered your channel. I already suscribed. I'm from Spain but I'm reading more in english nowadays. If you have some horror recomendations I would love to hear it. I will check your sci fi books video later too
@@Smitty1423 I'd love october recs!! I'm glad too I'm serious. I usually find the same type of video but made by different youtubers. You seem to have your own thing. And about the Words of radiance being your favorite I can totally see It. That book and oathbringer are my favorites from the cosmere and probably all time. Lets see how wind and truth ends. I'm reading the chapters Brandon is weekly putting online and loving It so far. And sorry for my bad english
I tried tress of the emerald sea, and honestly I liked the pirate summery vibe it had but I did not like the plot or characters at all, but I still wanna keep trying to get into the cosmere , what would you recommend?
Thanks for the video! Do you have thoughts on reading on a kindle v paper book v audiobook? Autobook is definitely easier, but I worry I'm losing a lot.
I think when listening to an audiobook you really gotta lock in at least for me. I can’t be trying to do to many things at once or I will literally lose the plot lol
I LOVE Brandon Sanderson and didn’t think anyone would touch the pedestal I have him on. Now I keep going back and forth between him and Abercrombie. Completely different, but both amazing for me.
Maybe I need to read more of him. I read up to The Well of Ascension and then stopped, because it was one of the worst books I've read. Yes the ending was good, but that's not saying much when the other 85% was filler love triangle trash.
Sanderson is amazing and his ability to write so fast should be studied. He is also great at engaging with his readers which makes him one of the greatest we have ever seen ....BUT the GOAT of high/Epic fantasy, in my opinion, is not Sanderson at this moment.....Tolkien, Erikson, Martin definitely have bigger claim to that title currently........All my opinion tho
He doesn't quite fit my taste anymore (Stormlight aside, he's mostly been a miss for me) but totally understand the appeal. My biggest issue with his writing is, I know this is subjective, I really don't like his humour. Series like Abercrombie's First Law, Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings, Abraham's Long Price Quartet, GRRM's ASOIAF, Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, Bakker's Second Apocalypse and the works of Guy Gavriel Kay are more suited to my taste.
I love your arguement, however Joe Abercrombie blows me away with his prose and storytelling, much more than Sando. If you havent read First Law yet give it a try! Edit: i just saw your FL trilogy on your bookshelf lol
From the title alone this feels like Im watching an NBA video but about authors 😂 my two habits coliding 💀 Imma need some half assed stats and controversial statements for imersion!
Not sure how you can be the GOAT and not be the best writer. I like his professionalism and how he is always writing. That said, his storytelling is simplistic and his prose is fairly pedestrian. He's also overly verbose (just look at Stormlight). Words Of Radiance the best fantasy book of all time? No, but I love your enthusiasm.
Brandon Sanderson is the best (to me only on par with one other author). His insight into how to construct a character, a character arc, a world, and then tie them together into a story is unparalleled. He’s also extremely ambitious and has developed the skills to back it up. And throughout he’s set a new standard for communicating with fans.
I like Sanderson but he’s cringe corny sometimes and his pros are super basic. Nowhere near a Tolkien or even a Martin for that matter..all subjective tho.
@@Smitty1423 Based on your top 5 books I’m gonna assume you don’t like darker fantasy so idk if you’d like ASOIF but if you havnt read LOTR you should give it a shot. Or if you don’t mind darker than definitely give ASOIF a read. Much better than the tv series.

I think besides Magical systems, Malazan does all of these better, including the sanderlanche. I think the bigger argument for Brandon becoming the goat is the cosmere as a whole, topped off with his output and the quality of his output, and this even leads to his non cosmere works which there is plenty of.
Yeah for sure
My friend told me his hot take that if the Cosmere had an amazing prose, maybe like the name of the wind, that it would be the greatest fantasy series of all time
That’s a hot take lol
Speaking of studying the map of books, once i saw the map for the shadow of gods and I saw that there was a group of mountains that was a gigantic snake i was hooked 😂. Like you cant tell me that doesn't catch the readers eye.
I’m on shawdow of the gods right now and can confirm this haha
The map comment is so true. When I read sci Fi books that have maps it is SO important in placing the setting in my mind.
Yes!! Like so important to the story that you can’t skip it
I remember the first time reading the Hobbit at 15 or 16, the map was the selling point for me. For years, I had been "mapping" the woods near my house and hear was book in which as I read, I could follow the character's journey on the map.
@@chrisowenssff4876 dope
Defintely dont skip Mistborn Era 2. Excellent. And dont trad the sunlit man until you've read everything else.
Ahh that’s good to know okay I will read Mistborn era 2 first then!
Sunlit Man is my favorite of the secret projects.
I DNF’d way of kings twice but third time different time it was great.
@@pattypage6723 yeah for sure. Also did you continue with the rest of the series?
As of right now it's Pierce brown (haven't read Sando yet). You're like me in the sense that character work is top priority and I think if you finish the rest of the red rising saga you'll really see the incredible depth of his characters
The goat is back
We here ✊🏾
love sanderson as well
Favorite author for sure
What did you think of the WaT cover reveal. I think it’s my favorite
I think it’s absolutely incredible!
I'm super curious as to what book fell from the bookshelf. Maybe it's a sign from the universe I need to read it.
I’m laughing out loud it was a thriller book I’m not home right now I’ll let you know when I get back
The book is called You Know What You Did
@@Smitty1423 Hopefully not a message from the Beyond! :)
Anyone coming to Dragonsteel 2024?!
I wish haha
I'm going to be honest, I'm a map skipper. The geography of where people are going, the terrain, it just doesn't interest me. As long as I pick up the social structure or any kinks in the society has always been good enough for me.
Studying has never been a part of my "reading for pleasure" journey.
I'm certain I miss out on certain elements others get that study the maps and understand the geography of the world. I guess I can just live with that.
Great video, great bloopers, great sound.
That’s fair enough! And thanks trying to improve each video
bro we are going to be EATING in 4 months when Wind and Truth comes out. The man cannot write a bad ending
Seriously! December needs to be here haha
I don't think I heard you mention The Emperor's Soul. My brother got me into Brandon Sanderson with this one--it helped that it was bite-sized compared to the rest of his books. 😅
Ahh I gotta check it out then!
Haha journey before destination
Your audio is 👌
Ahh good to hear!
Great video!
Appreciate it!
Have you read Era 2 of Mistborn yet? Don't think it was mentioned in your Read or Unread categories
Nope not yet it’s on my list tho!
I just discovered your channel. I already suscribed. I'm from Spain but I'm reading more in english nowadays. If you have some horror recomendations I would love to hear it. I will check your sci fi books video later too
I’ll have some horror recs for October for sure and glad you discovered! I need to get to Spain haha
@@omniboy-prime so dope. And yeah excited for Wind and truth I’m going to wait for the entire thing to come out!
Bro said I was worried about the pandemic but I should have been more worried about the stormlight archive 😂😂😂😂
Lmaoooo you caught that 😭
@@Smitty1423 you a fool 😭. I was doing a load of laundry and I had to stop mid fold to make sure I heard that correctly 🤣🤣🤣

I tried tress of the emerald sea, and honestly I liked the pirate summery vibe it had but I did not like the plot or characters at all, but I still wanna keep trying to get into the cosmere , what would you recommend?
Mistborn for sure
Thanks for the video! Do you have thoughts on reading on a kindle v paper book v audiobook? Autobook is definitely easier, but I worry I'm losing a lot.
I think when listening to an audiobook you really gotta lock in at least for me. I can’t be trying to do to many things at once or I will literally lose the plot lol
@@Smitty1423 Thanks! Also I recommend Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne!
@@ayyelou2 my current read!
hell yeah
Leggooo
I LOVE Brandon Sanderson and didn’t think anyone would touch the pedestal I have him on. Now I keep going back and forth between him and Abercrombie. Completely different, but both amazing for me.
Amazing! I gotta get into Abercrombie next month
Maybe I need to read more of him. I read up to The Well of Ascension and then stopped, because it was one of the worst books I've read. Yes the ending was good, but that's not saying much when the other 85% was filler love triangle trash.
I hope you at least read Hero of Ages to end the trilogy and see if your thoughts change if not it may not be for you!
Haha that’s so funny because Well of Ascension was the only book in the trilogy I loved.

All good but I am def checking out First law soon
“Not many authors do book after book after book”
Me being a Stephen King fan: hehehe
Hahaha
I love your arguement, however Joe Abercrombie blows me away with his prose and storytelling, much more than Sando. If you havent read First Law yet give it a try!
Edit: i just saw your FL trilogy on your bookshelf lol
@@PsilocybeJedi it’s my read after next and I’m excited for it
From the title alone this feels like Im watching an NBA video but about authors 😂 my two habits coliding 💀 Imma need some half assed stats and controversial statements for imersion!
😭😭😭😭
I'll return once I've read more than Mistborn
Sounds good
I neeeed to get into the cosmere! Matter fact ima purchase mistborn right now! RIP my wallet 😂
@@carlosocasio6322 aha RIP but so worth it
do you think reading stormlight it would ruin other books for me?
@@owend5696 yeah probably, but that’s okay haha
Have you read The Wheel of Time books?
Not yet
What’s the name of the mic?
Neewer!
After reading Robin Hobb, trying to read Brandon Sanderson books is like going from a Michelin star restaurant to fast food.
Mmm interesting!
I agree!
Ehhhhhhhhhhh
Omgggggggg im sick of this cult 🤦🏿💔
I like Sanderson but he’s cringe corny sometimes and his pros are super basic. Nowhere near a Tolkien or even a Martin for that matter..all subjective tho.
Def subjective but also open to dialogue!
