LMFAO. I'm reading these comments and even though I never saw Jim Brown play, I can without hesitation say that he's the greatest offensive football player of all time. He's still the standard call running backs are judged by. For the guys who say Walter Payton was better (he was a more complete back no question), it took Payton 10+ years in a 16 game schedule to surpass what Brown did in a 9 year, 14 game schedule. It wasn't like Brown was 225 and everyone else was at 175.(lbs of course). I get the fact the there weren't the athletes of today's game but the NFL was exceedingly more violent in Brown's heyday. His contributions to the Civil rights movement and even today with his anti gang violence organization further solidified his place as the GOAT.
1957-1965....led the NFL in rushing in 8 of his 9 years, Averaged 5.2 yards a carry...and 104 yards a game...won the NFL title...best RB ever. Should have been #1...
The one year he didn't lead in rushing (1962) he was playing with a broken wrist. He still finished 2nd to Jim Taylor of the Packers, and then averaged over 6 yds/carry the next season.
+Jimmy Googer No when he played later in his career it became 14 games and he got 12k yards in 8 seasons so he would have more yards than Emmitt Smith if he played a couple more years
julrodriguez50 Maybe I mean he had a 14 game season so to reach Emmitt's record of 18,355 Rushing yards Brown would at his rate have to play a 16+ season career with around or over 1,000 yards
They made this top 100 list in 2010, before they started the annual lists of current players. I come back to this Jim Brown video at least a few times a year because it gives me such chills..especially the ending. I'm only 28 but damn I wish I got to see him play
In my eyes, jim brown is #1. Hands down. Never missed a game, and he did damage in just 9 yrs. it took the rest longer to get near him. Jim brown played 14 games a season while the rest, 16 games a season. No one came close to jim brown in that span. They had to wait, took more games to catch him, so do the match
Love your dedication to stats, but only one "small" detail needs tweaking... In the first four years of his career, the NFL season was only 12 games, then it changed to 14 games. Other than that, you're SPOT ON dude. Took Payton more years, with more games per year to eclipse his totals. Sanders averaged 99.8 yds/gm in career, Walter averaged 88.03 yds/gm in career...Jim "GOAT" Brown averaged 129.76 yds/gm in career. 'Nuff said!
Ronald Nock Your eyes see correctly. Jim Brown is #1. I only wish that he had played 11 or 12 years instead of 9. At 30, he was a little young to retire. Would have liked to see him play more with LeRoy Kelly on the Browns teams of the late 60’s. Jim hung em up a little early.
I am old enough to have watched football starting in the very early 60's so I saw everyone on the list play...to have Jim Brown at #2 is an insult to intelligence and common sense. He was clearly the best NFL player I ever saw play the game.
The Most Inspirational Video of the Top 100. If the NFL re releases this for the 100 year anniversary they shouldn't change this video one bit. I'm not a fan of actors or most entertainers but the way Burt talks about Jim and the music at the end. It's when you know Jim's career is the definition of mythical status. That's an inspiration for any of us in life.
Great commentary and background from Burt Reynolds! I'm in Canada and was born in 1961 which meant I never had the privilege of seeing Jim play. Over the years I am completely amazed at the footage from his career. I respect Jim for walking away from football at age 29. So often in pro sports these decisions can be made by owners GM's,coaches and team doctors. Jim went out on his own terms where those who work in regular jobs don't have that opportunity. Thanks for sharing.

This comment section is loaded with non-knowledgeable, younger football fans who are completely IGNORANT to the history of the game. Jim Brown was a beast, and would be a BEAST in any era. This comment section exemplifies the main reason I hate the NFL for cultivating this era of stupid fans. The classic NFL Films shows that the Sabols spent 40 years crafting, are never shown anymore. Consequently, this era of football fans has ZERO CLUE of anybody that played before 1999 (unless its the 90s Cowboys and late 80s Niners). They also have zero clue on how great players would be great players in any generation
Don't blame the NFL, it's modern culture generally; people are ignorant of history. With films, it's the same ignorance of older classics (and international films too)
This the best player in NFL history. PERIOD. Played 9 seasons, NEVER missed a game. 8 rushing titles in 9 yrs. AVERAGED 100 yards per game for his entire career. Over 5 yds per carry for his entire career. The only man to do so. 126 TD in 9 yrs, in 118 games. More than 1 per game. ONLY MAN TO DO SO. 14.0 per season. Rice had 207 TD in 20 seasons. 10.35 per season. Rice played in 303 games. Jim Brown is the MONUMENT that towers over all other football players. As the great John Facenda said; "In the history of the NFL. there have been many superstars. But, only one SUPERMAN."
Ppl forget in Jim’s career only the last 2 years it was a 14 game season. Before that it was only a 12 game season. Now look at his stats. The numbers are ridiculous for that time period. If anyone did that today they would break the internet
The rules nowadays favor the offense and protect the offensive players. Jim Brown would be even more dominant. Johnny Unitas would have the passing records. The rule changes from 1978 completely changed the NFL forever. Since then it is comical, the game doesn’t even resemble hardnosed, gritty football. It is a pass happy and much less physical game. Tom Brady would have been roughed up so bad in the pre-1978 days who knows if he would have lasted. The players of today aren't better, the conditions in which they play are better!
For the most part, I agree. I do think athletes today are better trained, conditioned, etc due to the technology advances available today but when it comes to being warriors on the gridiron, they are nothing compared to legends like Jim Brown and Johnny Unitas. Those guys played in an era that was so much more rough and physical compared to today. It's why I respect them more than even Tom Brady. Brady is one of the best QB's to ever play the game, but no way do I believe he'd be this good had he played when defenses could clobber him on a weeky basis.
George Wagner How about we take this to the 90's. Still rough and gritty (way more than now). Brown would get his ASS handed to him. His average would go from 105 or whatever to probably 80 yards a game. Deal with it because it's the truth
No disrespect to Brown or Unitas, they would both dominate, but let’s be real here, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith AP LT are clearly more talented football players. Unitas would not be a top 5 QB in today’s league(still good but just not that level)

I love how for most of the players on this list the music is very grand and jovial but for these last few it’s been very quiet and almost somber. Very neat touch!!
Daniel Leshko , so were Jim Brown's when he retired. If Art Modell had not mistakenly tried to strong arm him into returning from a movie set, Jim Brown likely would've had a few more superior years of production plus tack on years that many superstars have at the end of their careers. He led the league in rushing in 8 of his 9 seasons, finishing second in his one injury-plagued year. Brown averaged over 104 yards rushing and a TD-plus per game and over 5 yards per carry. Despite the fact that teams knew he was coming. Despite the fact that gang tackling and cheap shots frequently came his way. Chuck Bednarik called them "extra curriculars" in a video about Brown. Concrete Charlie was astounded by how much punishment, legal and illegal, Brown would take play after play. Yet he'd get up slowly and come back even harder on the next play. Suppose Jim Brown had played until he was 32, experiencing a 25% drop in average production plus a loss of 2 games per year due to injury. He would've played 36 of 42 possible regular season games, at just over 78 yards gained rushing, or over 2800 yards. Plus 29 TDs. An ugly scenario for him. He would've still amassed well more than 15,000 yards rushing plus 155 TDs, numbers few players today can touch, even with extended schedules and relaxed rules favoring offenses. He walked away after a spectacular season where he led the league in rushing and was MVP. Left at the top of his game.
Jose Dopwell Even if Brown played and put up 15k that’s still not insane, there’s 3 running backs in history with that number. Jerry achieved 22,895 receiving yards. The next closest guy is TO with 15,934 receiving yards, who will likely be passed by Fitzgerald this year. That’s an unimaginable gap between 1 and 2. Literally an untouchable number.
9 seasons 12 14 games per year 12000 plus yards only 3 missed plays run for run NOBODY TOUCHS HIM ALL ABSOLUTELY ALL RUNNING BACKS ARE BEING MEASURED BY WHAT HE DID RUN FOR RUN NOBODY HAS DONE ALL OTHERS NEEDED MORE RUNS TO GET TO 12000 yards MR JIM BROWN YOU ARE THE BEST PERIOD NOBODY HAS DONE IT🏈🏈🏈
He should be #1 because of the gap between his level of performance and whoever comes next. There is nothing that can be said which would take the amazement away you see in his films. The one thing which is always there is the combination of power(especially leg and back) and a sense of balance that can't be taught. He's got 5 or 6 guys around him after breaking a tackle, and he's doing a little dance to create a diversion which he turns into the path of least resistance. A WR can find a way to get open and make difficult catches, but Jim Brown was making music on the spot. After retirement, he stood tall for civil rights, proved himself as an actor, worked extensively with troubled youth, and did one other thing I give him even more respect for. When UFC had their first big televised championship, Brown was a commentator for the first 2 or 3 events. He called the Gracie/Shamrock contest on the first one, and these were fights for the purist with clean holds and respect between the competitors. It wasn't long before the blood and violence factor picked up. That's not what Jim Brown signed up for, and he left in disgust. The 2000 plus people who posted before me already knew of his talent. I wanted the other things to be known for those who didn't. Genuine class that you show from the start and never deviate from is as rare as his skill on the field. God bless you, Mr. Brown.
Think about this. At that time you had Jim Brown in football. Hank Aaron in baseball. Bill Russell in basketball. And Muhammad Ali in boxing. Legends.

The GOAT. Period. They knew he was coming and they could NOT stop him.
Rest in peace to a true legend. One of the greatest athletes, not just football players, of all time.
Preach
Walter Peyton was in a more talented era of football
+KevinLG1990 That doesn't make him better.
* all
It's kinda hard comparing them seeing as Jim Brown played fullback and Walter played halfback both ran the ball but different styles in different eras
1957-1965....led the NFL in rushing in 8 of his 9 years, Averaged 5.2 yards a carry...and 104 yards a game...won the NFL title...best RB ever. Should have been #1...
i agree
I AGREE.... BEST EVER!!!
The one year he didn't lead in rushing (1962) he was playing with a broken wrist. He still finished 2nd to Jim Taylor of the Packers, and then averaged over 6 yds/carry the next season.
The man walked away in his prime to make movies...
Jim Cushman And he was smart to do so.
Back when Browns could get championships lmao sad to see what happened to the franchise

The Greatest Of All Time Jim Brown 🧡
You must be high.
If he kept playing he'd probably still be number 1 for all the rushing records
Not likely. When he played the seasons were only 12 games so he wouldn't have had a chance at Emmit's numbers or even Barry Sanders numbers.
Samuel Hsu are you dumb the yardage around the 1000 each year adds up. at year 13 he'd break all of them
no, he would have had 18,355 yards in four more years. he was averaging darn near 1500 yards per year. 4 years and he is over 18,000 yards
I'm obviously number 1
W
dude u is literally 💩

Obviously
Agreed.
Bless in peace Mr Brown
They made this top 100 list in 2010, before they started the annual lists of current players. I come back to this Jim Brown video at least a few times a year because it gives me such chills..especially the ending. I'm only 28 but damn I wish I got to see him play
The strength in Jim Browns has surpassed Legendary, it's Mythical
RIP Jim Brown. The NFL just lost their probably biggest legend today.
RIP Bert. Jim Brown, greatest. Period!
It always comes down to Jim Brown vs so-and-so. That tells you what you need to know.
Rip to a legend ❤️❤️
Great commentary and background from Burt Reynolds! I'm in Canada and was born in 1961 which meant I never had the privilege of seeing Jim play. Over the years I am completely amazed at the footage from his career. I respect Jim for walking away from football at age 29. So often in pro sports these decisions can be made by owners GM's,coaches and team doctors. Jim went out on his own terms where those who work in regular jobs don't have that opportunity. Thanks for sharing.
Jim Brown is The G.O.A.T. period plain and simple!!!!!
In nine seasons:
9× Pro Bowl (1957-1965)
8× First-team All-Pro (1957-1961, 1963-1965)
3× AP NFL Most Valuable Player (1957, 1958, 1965)
NFL Rookie of the Year (1957)
8× NFL rushing yards leader (1957-1961, 1963-1965)
5× NFL rushing touchdowns leader (1957-1959, 1963, 1965)
NFL 1960's All-Decade Team
NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team...
Anyone who is a real fan of the NFL will know over the last 50 years plus there has been Jim Brown, and then everybody else...Having watched the NFL since the early 60's, many many great players come to mind, Walter, Barry, Jerry, Reggie, Taylor, etc. All great players for sure, but Jim Brown for me is the greatest player in the NFL...

I know I am late commenting but for the length of time he played 9 years he's definitely the GOAT!
What a bad ass. Oh, and he averaged 100 yards a game.......for a CAREER! Astonishing.
RIP, GOAT. Meant so much to so many people.
The best football player I have ever seen....
The best running back of all time PERIOD
CJ..No kidding...Very well said...
CJ Bourne Actually, the comment section is loaded with people saying that people saying that he should be lower are stupid.
Amen, peach on, brother!
true stuff
Don't blame the NFL, it's modern culture generally; people are ignorant of history. With films, it's the same ignorance of older classics (and international films too)
This Man is by far THE GREATEST PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL and no one is close!!!!!
Oj was much better, I've juice run the ball for 350 yards on a game back in 66 sy USC college, greatest of all time..
Rip to the dude telling his story
As the great John Facenda said;
"In the history of the NFL. there have been many superstars.
But, only one SUPERMAN."
Also a serial domestic abuser so who cares
Rip Jim. Greatest to ever do it.
#RIPJimBrown you were the original *G.O.A.T.* and The Godfather of the NFL
We will ALL miss you dearly❤️

Jerry Rice?
Nope man more like Walter Payton.

RIP Mr Jim Brown. You did it on your terms.
Look at the greatness of that performance..
Jim Brown NFL's Man of Steel
RIP Burt. 9-6-2018
I always admired Burt reading off the words Jim wrote him, it seemed genuine.
jim brown is the greatest because he set the standard for all running backs.
Ppl forget in Jim’s career only the last 2 years it was a 14 game season. Before that it was only a 12 game season. Now look at his stats. The numbers are ridiculous for that time period. If anyone did that today they would break the internet
The G.O.A.T. ..... period.
He’s definitely one of those players I wish I’d gotten to see in person!
Jim did so fine. He did not make 9M per year. He rated such. He was legendary.
Pro athletes made a lot less money in Mr. Brown’s day, than they do now.
RIP to a LEGEND
#2 ??? Are you kidding? Jim Brown was and is the greatest player of all time, Period.
No he wasn't. Not even close.
Imagine getting 100 yards every game from ANY RUNNING BACK!!
Some compliment from Burt at the very end! Nice!
Just an amazing athlete! Unstoppable! Could carry two guys on his back and keep running. The GOAT!
Yep, completely agree
George Wagner How about we take this to the 90's. Still rough and gritty (way more than now). Brown would get his ASS handed to him. His average would go from 105 or whatever to probably 80 yards a game. Deal with it because it's the truth
QBs certainly have an easier time for great stats
No disrespect to Brown or Unitas, they would both dominate, but let’s be real here, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith AP LT are clearly more talented football players. Unitas would not be a top 5 QB in today’s league(still good but just not that level)
Im not THE biggest football fan. But his highlights...made him, to me anyway, best running back ive ever seen.
he ain't #2. He's #1. no discussion allowed.

R.I.P GOAT Brown!

Number 1 without any shadow of doubt!
Rest in Peace! Mr. Brown!
Should have been 1
Agreed. I think Rice deserves to be #2, but Brown should be #1
thank you he is number 1
Daniel Toma have you ever looked at how far ahead jerry rice is amongst receivers? His numbers are nearly untouchable.
R.I.P. Jim brown :( .
9 seasons 12 14 games per year 12000 plus yards only 3 missed plays run for run NOBODY TOUCHS HIM ALL ABSOLUTELY ALL RUNNING BACKS ARE BEING MEASURED BY WHAT HE DID RUN FOR RUN NOBODY HAS DONE ALL OTHERS NEEDED MORE RUNS TO GET TO 12000 yards MR JIM BROWN YOU ARE THE BEST PERIOD NOBODY HAS DONE IT🏈🏈🏈
It's important to remember that football in the 1960s was all about the run. Normalizing the stats to a modern era proves just how valuable he was.
Brown.
Jim brown . The Greatest running back in the history of the game .
He’s #1 and please don’t let whoever made this list grandkids make the next list!
