Jim brown is very choosy about who he gives praise too. And rightly so. Jim brown was a beast, a tank. He would rather go into a player than go around him, a true north and south back. And he reckonizes great backs like Walter who fought for every inch every second.
Yup, JB was probably the NFL's biggest CRITIC! I was surprised to see him praise ANYBODY!
In Jim Brown's book, OUT OF BOUNDS, at one point he discusses some of the best all-time running backs, and he does not give Walter Payton incredible credit. He mostly has a problem with the fact that Payton didn't have, to quote Brown, "that extra gear." He said, "I had it, OJ had it, but Walter didn't have it." I will add further to Brown's criticism: I really didn't enjoy watching Walter Payton back then, and I say this as someone who likes and admires him greatly. But offer me the chance to watch his highlights films, and I'll pass. I'd much rather watch Barry Sanders, OJ Simpson, Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers, and frankly quite a few other running backs before watching Walter Payton, who just wasn't that fast, ran sideways way too much for me to enjoy, and in my view, doesn't belong in the same breath as a Jim Brown or Barry Sanders.
In fact, when Walter was in his early years, the top running backs in the game were OJ Simpson and then Earl Campbell, never Walter Payton. Later on, in the 1980s, there were others who were thought of more highly than Payton. I think Payton got his numbers due to longevity, which is a credit to his difficult workouts, and the great effort he undertook.
Again, all due credit to Walter, he was a great one and a fine human being, too, but I just don't think he was as good a player as the others named here. Back in the 1970s, OJ Simpson was a star, and then Earl Campbell was a star. Walter Payton was not a star then.
Note: Again from his book: Jim Brown commented about Payton that "He might not have been even the best Chicago Bear RB ever, they once had a man named Gale Sayers." I agree.
Brown gave Payton all kinds of credit for being a willing and talented blocker, but he still didn't consider him up there with himself, Simpson, and Campbell.
Here is a story about Walter Payton. So my dad was around 10-13 and he loved Payton so his mom told him to write a letter to him! He ended up sending the letter to his address, and Walter sent a fully autographed picture and a hand written note to him and stayed in touch with him every month. To that I say what a class act!

Jim Brown never praises anyone and he was in awe of "Sweetness". At 185 lbs, the most complete running back of all time. Class personified, none of today's running backs are even close. The NFL at least got the Walter Payton Man of the year award right. RIP (Rest in Paradise).

Walter Payton was better than Jim Brown. Brown played in a time where he had no other competition. There weren't any Lawrence Taylors, Reggie Whites, MJGs, Mel Blounts, Ronnie Lotts, etc. during his time. He played easy competition, and it showed. If he played when Walter played, he wouldn't be as good as he was back when there was no competition.
+Shaun Diebel ummm there were great players then too. Gino Marchetti, Doug Atkins, Bob Lilly, Merlin Olsen, Ray Nitschke, Herb Adderly, bobby Bell, etc. There were plenty of great defensive players, don't hate just because you don't know them
jacob alterman None of them were close to as good as the players I mentioned above. Plus Olsen and Lilly, the only two good players there, didn't really play with Brown. Olsen played in the league for 3 seasons with Brown, and Lilly only played with Brown for 5 seasons. Plus, the players now and back in the 80s were much stronger and faster. Back when Brown played, there was no money in football, and it wasn't nearly as big as it is today. Athletes never grew up wanting and training to be an NFL player when Brown was a kid, and there was hardly any money to be made. Athletes would chose other sports or professions over football because there was no money in it.
jacob alterman If Jim were to be placed in today's game or when Payton played, he wouldn't be the strongest or fastest guy on the field like he was back then. The competition today is MILES better than what it was then. It's only a fact dude.
Greatest RB to ever play, period. Walter was all strength and speed, Barry had blazing agility and athleticism. Also, the Walter Payton of the Year Award goes to the player who helps volunteer work and helps out their community. Legendary on and off the field! Respect.

Barry is unreal, but why compare different running backs they're different styles we should just appreciate greatness
As a Bears fan who watched Sweetness during his whole career, I can tell you that during his prime, Walter played with the most lethargic offense, including offensive line, in the NFL. Truly, Walter was our best blocker and receiver for years. In blocking, he finally got some help when Covert, Hilgenberg, Matt Suhey came around. For most of his career, he was our only All Pro on offense. That's how bad the Bears offense was. The passing game was the MOST pathetic. Bob Avellini, Mike Phipps, Vince Evans are the QBs during the bulk of his career. Long story short, they sucked. They and their passing game, beyond throwing to Walter, gave defenses absolutely no concern. Even when McMahon came to the team, Walter was still the center of the offense. I love Jimmy Mac but he was more an emotive figure for the offense than he was a passer. The point is this. Walter was THE target of every defense throughout his career. He had very little protection from those targeting him. Constantly barraged with defenders and, yet, he started 178 consecutive games! I'm fine with him being #5 because, as far as I'm concerned, the top 5 look like a virtual tie for first to me, but someone's gotta be first. Also, I'm honoring his spirit by not debating where he's placed because I know he wouldn't give a crap.
I'm just adding the non-stats view from someone who was there to witness it. For years, for me, all I had, when watching the Bears, was the anticipation of seeing #34. Always wondering how many yards he'd rack up, always shaking my head at his non-running game, always a jaw dropped when he's throw a pass. He was incredible. Love him so much and miss him. #5 is fine.
Their passing game was certainly anemic for the early part of his career until McMahon, Gault and Gentry got there. But their offensive line was one of the best in the game for pretty much his entire career.

The definition of the GOAT he was able to do everything his position was meant to do and more. He was able to leap over everyone, to stiff arm everyone, to truck everything and not to forget he also was able to throw.

You wanna know how good Walter Payton was at the game of football? I'm a diehard Green Bay Packers fan and I think Payton is the finest player the NFL will ever see. And he is easily my favorite player of all time. This man is my hero.

I’ve been a cheesehead since I could read, and an avid Bears hater since before then, yet Sweetness was always my idol, at least as far as sports went. Sadly I could never replicate his success on a real field but I have done what I can to honor him in my first-ballot HOF backyard pickup career.
sweetness deserves to be #1. he could do literally anything. he can run routes, he can catch, he can block, he can run, he's the most complete running back in NFL history. probably the best player in NFL history...

He wasn't as fast as Tony Dorsett or Eric Dickerson... He wasn't as Elusive as Gale or Barry... He wasn't as powerful as Jim Brown, Bettis or Earl Campbell... He wasn't a cerebral beauty like Marcus or OJ... He wasn't as enduring as Emmitt... But his incomparable will made him THE BEST. A powerful runner with an even more powerful heart...

I'm a Cowboy fan, I loved Emmitt for his warrior mentality, rarely fumbled, hit the holes, went to war every game - I think Barry had great moves, stop on a dime, dazzle you every play - but Payton was everything you wanted, you could combine all the great RB's in history and you'd come up with Sweetness - no problem with him being ranked this high.

I'm a Chicago guy living in Dallas or Valley Ranch which was the Cowboys old practice facility location and I'm a die hard Payton guy. I gotta tell ya, I always thought Dorsett was better than Emmitt. That dude was ELECTRIFYING.

@@mr.blackhawk142 I'm from Chicago. I seen all Gales highlights and actually met him in a grocery store 20 years ago. He was electrifying. He was not the total package though. He was definitely more elusive than Payton. No doubt about that. He was not as physical. He didn't block. He didn't throw TD passes. Payton could and did do it all. Dorsett WAS electrifying. He could shift from 1st to 5th gear in a way I've never seen in NFL history.

Personally and after almost 40 years watching this game Water Payton is the Number One player of all time.Great Athlete, Great Running Back, and Great Person!!! Many of the today "NFL stars" are note even close to the CLASS of Walter Payton.

Uh, no. Payton entered the league in '75 and broke Jim Brown's record in '84, which was Payton's tenth season in the NFL.

Frippertonics was just pointing out the mistake made in the video. The way the narrator said it, makes it seem like it took him 13 seasons to do it, but Payton actually broke the record in 10 seasons.
@John Pottorgg Payton also played in 14 game seasons. His first three seasons (including his best statistical season where he could have had 2000 if he played 16) were in shorter years.
@John Pottorgg I think it literally started the year after Payton had 1800 in 14 games. He was on pace to crush the record had it been 16.
I was also aware of the Rice factoid. That's why I think that season is still much better than Moss's. His yardage record year in 1995 was better than Calvin Johnson's too IMO.

I feel blessed to grow up in Chicago in the 70’s and got to see him as my favorite player growing up. Special is an understatement.
When people throw out that "heart" is an intangible quality, i point to walter payton, because hes the definition of what heart is, he dominates with pure love and passion, something truly terrifying.

Payton was the best player ever and had the highest character of anyone in the NFL. He was offered a chance to be on the short for a transplant but decided he was a no more important than regular people. Best football player I ever saw, best nfl person .

The best football player who ever took a breath of air. He was so good for years on teams that really had no other offensive threat that some teams had three defensive players key on Payton. I've seen him run, receive, pass, block, kick, and punt.

As a Green Bay Packers fan I can say that I respect Walter Payton and his legacy tremendously and his inclusion as a top 10 player all time is appropriate.

As a Vikings fan, Walter Payton was without a doubt one of the greatest to ever play. Not just for the Bears, or for his era, but all time.
Probably the most fitting nickname of all-time in the NFL. He was beautiful.
He ran as hard as anyone ever could: lunging, plunging, twisting, turning, battering, and blazing, yet he NEVER fumbled!!! In my mind, he is one of the 10 greatest players of all time!
Who saw this great man run we are grateful to have done it ... no one bigger than this man, humble and simple that filled us with pleasant moments to see him run and beat the powerful defensive men who he faced ... even if you were not fans of the Chicago Bears ... Walter Payton forever!...

As a huge packer fan even though I was born in 1988 I never seen Walter Payton play in my lifetime but just watching him he was the heart and soul of the chicgo bears during his time. My father who is also a die hard packer fan. Will always say sweetness was the greatest RB of all time.

I have been watching the NFL for 56 years. Seen a lot of great players but in my opinion walter payton was not only the greatest back of all time but the greatest player of all time period.
I watched him as a child .i lived in hometown Illinois. Got his autograph. No dought the greatest running back but a great person.love these videos reminds me of when football was football.
When Jim Brown is talking about "doing it the wrong way, as in, running out of bounds", he was probably referring to memories of Franco Harris who ran out of bounds to avoid tacklers, and was in a race with Payton for the record. He voiced his displeasure with Harris at the time.
Yeah that criticism always bothered me. Franco would get the tough yardage when necessary. He was money in short yardage and goal line situations. He only ran out of bounds when there was clearly nowhere to cut back and too much pursuit, to save energy and avoid unnecessary wear and tear, line up for the next play. Franco was durable, tough but also practical. All these years later, he's still in great health.
There has never been another RB like Payton...totally unique. What other RB has had so many signature moves - high stepping, stiff arms, the launch into the end zone, devastating blocker, great receiver, pass thrower, he was even the teams back up punter. And as great as he was on the field he was equally great off the field.

There's an old old college song called "They Called Him Mr. Touchdown") with a section that goes:
"He can run and kick and throw, give him the ball and just look at him go." That song epitomizes Sweetness who could do all of those things plus being a great blocker. RIP WP, you're #1 in my football heart.

You will always be remembered as a legend.
He was a lot like Butkus, in that, what he accomplished is all the more remarkable when you consider that for the majority of their careers they were playing on truly horrible teams. That's why Smith isn't looked at the same as Payton, because he was on a really great offensive-line team. It makes a big difference when you have those guys opening up lanes for you!
oh yes, Payton would still have the yards record if he'd had the Cowboys offense.
my favorite running back of all time. had a horrible team for many years, and was THE ONLY go-to guy for years. took beating after beating year after and still did what he did. Till 85 Walter was the best they had by a mile.

This is exactly like Adrian Peterson ran. If not for a couple injuries (that he miraculously recovered from but still wasn't the same physically after) and his off-field issue, AD be up in the top 3 all-time rushers. He's so similar to Payton in the kind of ability and violent running, it's remarkable. I know where AD got that style, he got it from Walter Payton.
Peterson fumbled a boatload, useless as a receiver, and couldn't block. He wasn't unfortunate to get hurt, it was inevitable the way he ran upright. It was fun as hell to watch him though, but he's extraordinarily overrated

All this while the playing for a Vikings team where he was the best player and seemingly for almost 10 straight seasons was the only real player for the team, tore his acl and mcl one year, then the next rushed for 2k yards and won nfl mvp. He and Barry… feel bad for them. And they STILL produced. On top of the fact, led the leafs in rushing multiple times? Just say you don’t know what you’re talking about and there’s some weird hate for AD. AP is in my top 3 ever behind only Jim Brown and Walter Payton.
Peterson maybe was close as a runner, but Payton was a much better player.
When I was 7 I got to meet him in a restaurant and he was so kind. He signed a cocktail napkin for me with a note that said "Your Friend".
Shortly after his passing I served his family (Connie, Brittney and Jarrett) at a restaurant in Oakbrook, IL and got to know them the next two years. Whenever they came in I always got to catch up with them. Seriously the nicest family you have ever met. Walter chose some amazing people to have in his life, they match his influence that he had on so many himself.
Oh yeah, he was a pretty good RB on top of being an extraordinary human to boot (:

Grew up in S. Florida playing football in 70's. Played vs Elvis Peacock (*who ended my short "career" lol ;-) and several of my team mates became Pro NFL, like Wyman Henderson. I started playing w/ Wyman in the kids leagues (5 and 6 grade) and played w/ him all the way through High School. We had Eddie Bell, Wyman Henderson and several others on our team, and we faced guys who would become greats. I can't believe I survived! Then, just to prove it.......... Elvis came saw me in the hospital after he knocked me unconscious in a helmet to helmet smash... (*last thing I saw was a "flash bulb" in my head) but he and his mother were at the hospital, and he even said "im sorry" and I said don't ever be sorry for playing hard and your best. Great guy back then.

The Best all around football player EVER!!!! In my opinion the best running back ever also. Everyone has their opinion, that's ok. Runner, blocker, receiver, passer, kickoff returner, no other back has ever done all of that as well as Walter Payton. #34 is #1 to me. ❤️🙏☝️

He was and will always be my favorite. His death is the only time I've cried when a famous person has died and bizarrely I didn't realize up until about two years ago but despite playing NCAA football since the 90s I have never once given any player the number 34 that I've created or recruits on my team. I subconsciously retired his number in freaking video games, that's how much he was my favorite player.
Payton never played with an all-pro lineman in his prime or a decent QB and offensive team. He could do it all as a RB. The best blocker ever at his position and receiver. Had he played for a team with great linemen he would have set records that never would be broken.

By far my favorite player of all time! Still remember the day of his press conference announcing his illness. Was at the Denver vs Atlanta Super Bowl in Miami. On a happier note, the story told by Connie Payton on the first time meeting her parents over dinner at Connie’s house was a gem. The nervousness was there for both Connie and sweetness. The full scale 4 course meal was prepared by Connie’s mother and Walter instead requested a bowl of cereal 😂😂. They knew then Walter was special.
