    #40 is an insult. One could justifiably argue he was #1. OJ was a legend, absolutely dominated the game. I tuned in just to watch him week after week as he broke all the records. His talent was breathtaking, magnificent to behold. I feel sorry for those who either missed the chance to witness it or who cannot remember, and therefore associate his name with an event well after his football story ended. Whenever I hear the name OJ, I think of football greatness.

      From a football standpoint, not post life after football. He was a Top 3 RB of all time and it's debatable on which position it is. I think Payton is #1 because he was elite at Running, Blocking, Throwing, Catching. Then I flip a coin between Brown and Simpson. The 2000 yards in 14 games is the greatest season ever for a RB. The footwork on Simpson was amazing too. Can't say I've seen anything close to him until Sanders came into the league.

    OJ Simpson was the reason Black kids wanted to play football! My Pop Warner teams would fight over who gets the #32 jersey. His record of 2003 yards in a single season is STILL the record to a lot of us because he did it in only 14 games!

    • @charles2241
      @charles2241 4 роки тому +22

      There were a ton of white kids whom were his fans too, including me. I only played organized ball one year, but Alan Page actually inspired me more, as I had a defensive mindset and hated QB's. So when I played at recess, where there really wasn't any defense, I was OJ when I got the ball. Looking back on OJ's runs now, I notice he was a lot less of a juker than I was, and he primarily beat people with speed instead. You'll notice that on those long runs, nobody is making ground on him, not even the defensive backs. If I recall correctly, I actually had a cheap version of the OJ jersey top back then, and I wore it a lot. I find it a bit odd that my two favorite players of all-time, arguably, were both black guys, but Page impressed the hell out of me just as much as OJ did. I'm curious if Page could had made a very good RB or not, because he was fast for a DL guy.
      Man, those Vikings of old were just so badass on defense. I recall one game where they beat a very good Cleveland team on like the first game of the playoffs like 53-0. Damn, they could just blow the hell out of some teams at times and add in that mystique of the frozen tundra. I do have to wonder if they would had won a Super Bowl if the Vikes ever got homefield and could had played in Minnesota? It's such a ripoff that you would have a superior cold weather team, and they would never get to play the biggest game in those conditions, just to accommodate the fruity press back then, etc.

    • @eagerreader8731
      @eagerreader8731 4 роки тому +27

      @@technokokos Part of it can be attributed to the Mel Blount rule enacted in 1978, DB's can only place their hands on WR's within 5 YDS of the line of scrimmage. So if defensive backs had to be lees physical, receivers had a easier time catching the football.
      The 1977 Deacon Jones rule outlawed Jones' favorite move, the headslap on OT's. That made rushing the QB more difficult, making lives more comfortable for QB's, allowing for more time to throw. More time to throw leads to better throws leads to increased emphasis on throwing.
      In 1978, a second offensive player could catch a tipped pass, giving extra insurance to passing plays, that if the primary receiver couldn't catch it, a second could quickly rush there and catch it.

      +nikesback Yes. He did have some incredible years, but he had a total of six seasons over 1,000 rushing yards also. Other than '72-'76, he didn't go over 750 yards rushing. Whereas a guy like Barry Sanders had a 2,000 yard season (granted, it was in two extra games), but he also had at least 1,000 yards in all of his ten seasons. This is the same type case you can make for Payton, Smith, and Brown.

Emmitt had a steamroller O-Line his entire career, a great quarterback, and a great defense. And, unlike JB, OJ, or Barry, never gained 1,800+ in any season. And 2,000--forget it. And no, Troy Aikman wasn't dominating the airwaves like Marino, Fouts, Manning, or Brees. Emmitt always got an ample number of carries. Yeah, Emmitt is a record holder--just like Floyd Mayweather.

Being in the top 5 is not exactly a bad thing whatsoever, in fact, for OJ to be ranked in the top 5 (Much less mention his name)despite everything that has happened with him since his retirement speaks volumes of how great he was in the NFL.

    Waaay too low at 40. OJ wasn’t just a great RB. He was probably the single most popular athlete in the USA of the 70’s. He was the first black athlete to ‘crossover’ and become almost raceless. The first black athlete to become a national spokesman for a major company with Hertz. The 70’s was the decade of the running back and OJ was the best of the bunch. I fell in love with the NFL in the 70’s and I can’t overstate how big a deal OJ was back then.

    I was 14 when the murders happened. OJ's NFL career was almost all before I was born, but I knew him from "The Naked Gun" movies and his NFL on NBC commentary. I thought he was a nice, likable guy, and the idea that he was capable of murdering anyone made me incredulous. Yet I was a precocious kid and into science, and I knew the DNA evidence was really damning.
    So, as a teenager, I followed the trial as much as I possibly could. I remember being sick at home one day watching the opening arguments.
    When it was over, I thought, "He probably did it, but I don't know if the prosecution proved it beyond a reasonable doubt. So I understand the verdict."
    Looking back on it, I never fully grasped what was really going on with the jury. They didn't care whether he did it or not. They just wanted payback for the LAPD for Rodney King. I heard at least one juror admit this in "OJ: Made in America." Another juror apparently didn't understand the difference between DNA and conventional serology. (How could you not understand that after watching that trial?) Another juror admitted everyone had just checked out by the end.
    Johnnie Cochran was the only lawyer who could have won that case, because there really was enough evidence to convict OJ several times over, and the conspiracy theories about it being planted don't hold up to the slightest scrutiny.
    It never occurred to me then, despite going to a mostly black high school, that the racial division was that deep. I hung out with people from all backgrounds. It didn't matter because we all sang in the choir or had the same classes together.
    Apparently the original vote in the jury room was 10-2. But the two white jurors just changed their votes to "not guilty" without any discussion. It was like they just felt the room and knew there was no point in discussing it. They all just wanted to go home.
    OJ had it all. He was beloved everywhere during and after his NFL career. He had money. He had a beautiful family. But something snapped in him after he retired from football, and that culminated in the murders. He threw it all away because he could not control his anger and jealousy toward Nicole.
    And then, years after walking out of the courtroom with his freedom, the dumbass decided to rob men at gunpoint to steal back his memorabilia that really belonged to the Goldmans anyway. What an idiot.
    Dr. Bennet Omalu thinks OJ has CTE. He probably does, but we won't know until after he dies.
