LED panels or LED tubes are really expensive! There is a better and cheaper way to get really bright light in your shop or garage. Just use regular cheap A19 thread-in LED light bulbs but use 12 or more of them! Doing it this way you can do it for 1/4 the cost of expensive LED lights, panels or tubes! Plus they are easy to find!

About ten years ago when I insulated and drywalled my 20x20 garage I couldn’t decide on lights so I just installed 6 plugs across the ceiling connected to the light switches. Then I hit the dollar store for plug-in bulb sockets and bought LEDs. They work so well I just never even think about upgrading!

Those led garage lights with the adjustable “fins” are wonderful! 4 of them light up my 3 stall garage like it was noon on a sunny day. Have had them for 3 yrs now without any issues.

This is great. As a tenant, I've been experimenting with plug in LED flood lights and aiming them up in the basement, from on to of shelves. Not quite as good, but modification of the ceiling required. I also have a 150w 3 wing twist in LED bulb in the garage - but it does cast some gnarly shadows. Good lighting makes such a difference for me in terms of feeling motivated to work in those spaces.
Cut in boxes and a hole saw would have made this a lot easier and faster. Electricians wouldn't have bothered drilling the rafters either. We would just staple the wire to the top of them inside an attic like that.
I have had a few issues with these LED bulbs because mounting base up throws the heat on the electronics. (same with CFL) They last a few years at best, and a bit more than incandescent. Never had an issue with base down on a table lamp. Some of those are still going 10 years later. The cool thing about these new bulbs is they can turn a 1,000 watt lighting load into 100 watts, which is a big savings when using a room all day. That can shave 30-40 buck off your electric bill each month.
That looks great! Also, glad to see you back. With the pandemic every time someone doesn't post regularly we tend to worry.
I did something a little different. I call it my shop light chandelier. The garage had one light bulb holder in the center. I replaced the light bulb with a bulb splitter (now two bulbs) and screwed two more splitters into the first splitter (now 4 bulbs) and screwed 4 Dollar Tree "100w" LED bulbs. Dollar Tree cost for 4 bulbs = $5. Hardware/Walmart cost for 3 splitters = $8. Each bulb throws 1300 lumens for a total of 5200 lumens pulling 52 watts. Also there's an advantage that mine took no time at all to assemble and install.
You could extend your concept with splitters wherever you need extra light.

You can use a socket splitter and two bulbs of half power each. They will heat less and last longer.
Chris - Another fantastic and very useful video! I was having a bad week but seeing a new Chris Notap video cheered me right up. 😃 I noticed you haven't made as many videos lately, but I'm sure you've been busy. Your channel is the BEST on UA-cam. Just a few weeks ago I did my annual lawn mower oil change using the suction device I made from one of your videos. It still works great and it's so dang easy to use. I did about the same thing. I removed the ballast from the old 8ft florescent fixtures in my 2 shops. I attached 3 or 4 plastic and porcelain fixtures, like the ones you used to the florescent fixture covers. I used the old florescent fixture as the wire chase.
Worked great and my renter was extremely pleased with the amount of light in the building he rents.

I like this idea quite a bit. We had hanging fluorescent lights (4 x 48" fixtures) that we swapped for LED versions. It was actually pretty cheap as the local Costco had them for $20 per panel. We installed 4 and are happy with the light output. But this idea is great to avoid any dark spots and have ease of replacement in the future. Great work!
My story is similar. I found 2'x2' LED fixtures at the nearby Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I think I got 6 of them them for $5-8 each. Currently they are plugged into a Kasa HS103 Smart Plug.

I live in Illinois, USA and around here those style led bulbs are sold subsidized through the power company. So we can get 4/$1. I did a similar operation to what you did. It is so wonderful being able to see everything.
Yes it is nice and bright and easy to see anything! If you do this, make sure the bulbs you get are 5000K and about 15W like the ones I used. They are awesome!
I also exploited this subsidy, but 6 years later about a third of the bulbs failed. They’re cheaply made and skimp on the heat sinks.
A lot of those A19 (incandescent shaped) LED bulbs are real crap. I bought some at Lowes (or HD) that have lasted, but the quality of the light is terrible. I bought some at Walmart, and all 3 of the ones I put in failed in a few weeks! And now they don't even want to take them back! Yes, the problem is heatsinking, or driving the LEDs too hard - the walmart bulbs you can see it's actually the LEDs were driven too hard - you'll see a little black dot in one of the LEDs because it drew too much current and burned - shitty design.

Great video. The inventive camera angles are nice. I mounted several porcelain sockets on a 2x4 board that is attached to ceiling rafters. No cutting of drywall. Power comes from original ceiling socket.
I like this idea! I have a small workspace so I think I may make a portable light box that I can hang from the ceiling. I can plug it in and flip the switch. I won't use 12 though... probably 4 (maybe 6) would do for the space right over my work area.

I upgraded all my florescent 4' tube fixtures to LED tubes. The tubes can be purchased in-bulk off eBay at extremely competitive prices. The work of converting the old fixtures was as simple as removing the ballasts, and wiring 120 volts to the individual tombstone tube contact points.
Nice thing about converting old florescent fixtures is everyone is in the process of throwing them out with the trash. I've scored dozens over the last couple of years for free. Keep an eye out for construction dumpers at office park buildings. They're throwing out many many many drop ceiling florescent box fixtures in favor of modern LED form-factor designs.

A $30 box of 6 cheap led recessed lamps would have lite that room up and made the look and feel of a finished room. I get the utility part of using cheap fixtures it works and you can replace the bulbs very cheaply.

Superb light produced
A couple of years back I had purchased the Honeywell five foot LED work-light version. Four shop lights for a cleaner look. Baseball or football stadium lighting at a decent cost. You could go this route but it's allot more work and less pleasing visually unless you like what was. Can't argue with individually replaceable lights. Use your existing boxes as I did if you can do so.

I had the same idea in 2016 when I built my garage, but a little differently. I mounted the lamp holders on 4 foot 1x6 boards and matched the lumen output of a 4’ LED fixture. I had the electrician for my 24x30 shop to put multiple switched outlets on the ceiling joists so I can conserve electricity. I’m going to retrofit to your layout to get rid of the some dark spots. 🙂
I did the same in my garage. I did mine on 2 switches so I can have light and LIGHT. I've loved it and I always have a spare for the house if needed. More than one occasion I've gone a plucked a bulb for the house and pick up a pack of bulbs when it was convenient

I did something very similar a year or so ago and it has been working great!
Couldv'e just bought LED tubes, and re-wire the sockets from parallel to serial. Tubes last longer, are brighter, and will work even in freezing temps, if you have them.
led direct wire ballast bypass tubes are approx. $12 each!! x 6 = $60 bucks. Labor about 30 minutes!!

Yes the tubes come in many power configurations. The one I went with runs is 120 volts and you just cut out the ballast and wire the tombstones direct to mains. No fixtures to buy and no drilling or attic work. But it's hard to argue with your lighting results. No shadows is amazing! Nice work Chris and thanks for sharing!
I'm with you guys. Toss the old ballasts and rewire the tombstones to match the new LED requirements. Some LED's wire from one side and some wire on opposite sides (Line and Neutral). Toss the ballasts if you're picky and one fixture can be rewired in only about 10-15 minutes.
The keyless is currently $1/bulb and will likely be compatible with future technologies.

I have 12 High Output florescent tubes (each 4ft long) in my garage that create a ridiculous amount of light. They've been in place for 4 years and have given me no issue in spite of air temps ranging from subfreezing to over 100 degrees (F). Conversely, I have had to replace my Home Depot brand LED bulbs throughout the house within a year or two.
It would be interesting if you post your experience with the cheapo LED bulbs after a few years.

I liked your video. I did not see how you attached the boxes, but no issue with that. I am working on a 900 sq.ft. off-grid shop and considered your project. But, the math tells a different story.
Screw in bulbs from Amazon (Sunbeam 16893) are about $1 each and produce 800 lumen for 9 Watts, or 89 Lumen/Watt. 12 of these is 9600 Lumen Add $2 each for sockets and $3 each for boxes. Think about the wire and effort to install a dozen in a single bay garage and you get to $72 easily.
One Bolt-3 from Prime Lights is $82 and provides 8550 Lumen but consumes 66 Watts or almost 130 Lumen/Watt.
You can install it over the single, existing box with no additional wire or holes in your rafters.
I have four of these in a white painted 2-car garage that is classroom bright. I could have done it with only two.
There are 3 LED tubes per fixture which run independently. I could easily have enough light with one tube removed from each fixture to save a few watts and have spares on hand.
Next Project Recommendation: DIY Skylight = Free light from the Sun.
Brilliant way to prewire and just feed it through to the next hole! So much easier than kneeling on studs if you don't have wood up there.

Having lots of LED bulbs is great. especially daylight bulbs. Putting four in a in a ceiling fan can sometimes even be too much for a room.

Thank you for the video. I already put up 12 led single strip bulbs(4 feet long) and am happy with them (around $ 40 dollars a piece tho). Your solution was much cheaper and very bright. The only knock I can think of is there is no safety cage but perhaps with led that is not a thing. I have regular incandescent bulbs in the crawlspace and will change them out for led next trip down as I am sure I am gonna one day wack my head on one of them. John from Michigan
These bulbs have a plastic housing like most leds this shape. All good and safe!

Way to go. I chose the 100 watt quad screw in LEDs . . . and they fail offten due to excessive temperatures. ( pour thermal/electronic design ) Less work and buy spares. It will get really hot up there in summer.
Over the next year we'll see how they perform. I personally have never had an led bulb burn out.

Did some DIY string lights with dirt-cheap, 6 ft, triple tap extension cords and socket-to-outlet adapters. Also found that 60-watt-equivalent, cool LED bulbs gave similar lighting to the 100-watt-equivalents at that bulb density.
I replaced mine with harbor freight led 4 ft units. Amazingly bright. As to those led bulbs, the ones in my house barely last a year or so and they are not that cheap. Long term, you may regret it.

I have a garage with dimensions about the same as yours. I bought four LED fixtures from Amazon for about $20US each. They are four feet long like florescent fixtures. They plug in daisy chain fashion from one to the next so you only need one connection to power. Easy to install and they throw a lot of light. If I remember correctly they are 5000K in color and 6000 lumens each. Whatever the numbers, it's like and operating room in there now.
That's great! Here in Canada they are just too costly!
A few years ago I got LED fluorescent-style replacements that were ballast-compatible. I believe they came from Costco, at about $20 for a set of two four-foot T12s.
No hacking up fixtures, no time wasted.
our local habitat for Humanity Re-store sells 100 w equivilent LED bulbs for 4 for 4.00. Was also able to get plastic lampholders for 1.00 each at the other ReStore. I used 4 bulbs to light my garage desk. Good Job

"old work" plastic boxes and run the wire over the joist would make quick work of this job.
Get an outdoor bulb string light (50' $50 on costco or amazon) and add 12 $2 bulbs and come out ahead.
I priced led tube lights at my electrical shop and for a good one they want $106 Australian and I need 6. So glad I haven’t bought yet I think I’ll go you idea thanks for sharing

Wow...Just installed 2 @ 10' x 6" planks covered with chinese LED strip lights. Total cost =$21.64 Looks like daylight in the garage! And they run @ 24v - Almost costless.

Here we'd have the cable going over the joists.
Also, Living in 3rd world country i'd never install 12 x 15 watts LED light in the garage.. It'll be lucky to get one of those bulbs.. LOL..

I run new old stock fluorescent tubes, they last donkey’s years - guess they’ve cheapened them down in recent years. You could get LED tubes though - look out for special offers when they get rid of old models, even though they work fine.
Saying that I love the result if your work! Looks like old-school lighting but 10 times more efficient!
I did something similar in my basement, but I used an Harbor Freight indoor outdoor string of lights, cost about 20 bucks.

That's crazy! Our average bill is 53 pounds sterling per month in Canada. 2 adult house (my wife and I), 1300 sq ft house.
@@chrisnotap you bet it’s crazy Chris and extremely worrying! Our government is giving every household £400 to help, which is around half of the predicted rise in October. Very nice, one might think but, it’s nothing more than a sticking plaster (band aid) what will happen next year, it’s very scary! As a pensioner of 72 on a very low fixed income I really will be having to decide whether to heat or eat! Canada is sounding even more attractive than it is already. Looking forward to more from your much improved garage/workshop/film studio. My home is approximately 1600sq ft.
