      @@GrowingInTheGarden is it ok to leave straw around strawberries all year around? (not on the plants). just a small layer, like maybe half inch, to retain some moisture and keep the sunlight off the compost, and change the straw every year to keep fresh.

      @@MobileAura Sorry, I have no idea what you're saying?
      I got these plants when my kids were in elementary from their plant sale (2013/2014) Had a few here n there never produced much, my yard wasn't the greatest. Moved them to grandma's place this year and they've exploded with strawberries. Same plants. In a pot. No issues. I have two varieties. One blooms later in the season, so im waiting on the second set. First group has already done well.
      Dad and both sets of grandparents were farmers. Kids got green thumbs. I do not. I just figured it's the magic touch of the kids taking care of it more now at grandma's. 🤷🏻‍♀️ possibly cuz im way up north. I'm not sure.

    Strawberry flowers are sensitive to frost, but the plants go dormant in the winter in zone 5 and if protected from direct wind arrive in the spring in perfect condition. Our strawberry patch woke up in the first warm days of spring and there are flowers on a few of them.

      @@GrowingInTheGarden exactly, strawberries will survive a moderate winter, leaves will turn red due to frost but they will get lots of new leaves as temperatures begin to raise in spring.
      I haven't found a way to protect them from pill bugs though, mulching will keep the soil moisted and those b*stards seem to love that. Even if I raise the fruit they seem to find it irresistible

    Thanks for the in depth video! I have second year strawberries in containers now that just started putting off flowers. In regards to pruning them, as I understand it, this should only be done during the first year after the crowns are planted to help the roots get established and then next year the flowers should be allowed to grow in like normal to produce berries. Are you saying that even for established plants, the first flowers should still be pruned? If anyone knows the answer, please share!!

      @@GrowingInTheGarden....Whoo hoo! I’m in East Mesa! Glad I found someone with gardening expertise that lives in my ‘neck of the woods’. There are a lot of really helpful gardeners with great tips on UA-cam, but let’s face it, when they live in Michigan or other zones that aren’t anything like here, it gets frustrating listening to their planting tips when they talk in terms of what to plant in a given month, when their months (climate-wise) are NOTHING like ours.

    I’m so glad to have found your channel, as so many gardening channels are from colder climates. I live in Southern Nevada, outside of Las Vegas. My husband brought me 4 beautiful hanging baskets of strawberries from Home Depot, and we hung them under our pergola that we covered with tan colored shade cloth (I don’t know the % shade). At first they were doing really well and producing berries, but now that the weather is approaching 90, they seem to be struggling and the edges are turning brown. I haven’t had a ripe berry for several days now, although I can see several green ones. I did mulch around the edges of the basket with small bagged bark pieces when we hung them up. Do you think they are getting too hot being less than 2 feet from the shade cloth? Our area has been windy lately too. Do you think they would do better in large containers in more shade? We don’t have much shade here, but I have some metal barrels next to (& north of) our cattery that has a fiberglass roof. How much shade is too much in hot climates like ours?

    • @GrowingInTheGarden
      @GrowingInTheGarden  2 роки тому

      Hanging baskets are tough. They would do better in the ground or in raised beds. They need some morning sun at least.
