Yes these are awesome; whenever I watch Olympic events, I always wonder what’s going on in the minds of these amazing athletes and this provides amazing insight!

I run 8 miles every morning but am neither talented or pro. Just for fun. I average 7 mile an hour pace

would be interested to see how you would rank all Olympic 800m gold medalists of the "modern" era, (1960 onward). Qualitatively or quantitatively ? Snell above Rudisha? , where does Wottle fit? Cruz?
Studies have shown that Olympic bronze medalists are happier with their performance than silver medalists. That's just how elite athletes are. If you win bronze, you usually feel that you gave it your all against great competition and were rewarded by getting on the podium. If you win silver, you can't help but think that maybe it could have been gold. As I tell my daughter and son when they race, the finishing position doesn't determine whether you raced well. The finishing position is mainly determined by who decided to come to the race and how they performed. You can race poorly and win if the competition isn't strong. You can have the race of your life but be up against a David Rudisha or a Michael Phelps.
It must have an incredible moment regardless if you won or not. What an accomplishment Nick!

Great to hear some insight on what it’s kinda like for you going into a race. I ran in the early 80s, nowhere near your level though. There was no prize $ back then so it would be Interesting to hear how runners can make $ competing these days.

Getting second in the 800 is the absolute worst. Got out kicked in the last 20 meters of a state championship and still think about what could I have done to this day.

You are my hero, man! I ran the 800 my senior year and it was such a grueling race. Of course I wasn't really good, typically 2:05-2:10 range, but I was proud to do it. I had a coach in 8th grade tell me I would never be a runner. Its been many years and I am trying to get back to running again. It's really tough when you haven't ran consistently in 10 years, but my best friend and I are trying to get back to it.

Hey Nick! You’re right! I looked into some data on the “Olympic Hangover”. There has only been 1 athlete since the World Championships started that medaled in the Olympics and medaled in the World Championships the next year, Kenyan Alfred Yego. He won Bronze in Beijing 2008 and Silver in Berlin 2009. No Olympic medalist has run a World Leading time in the 800 the year after winning a medal in the Olympics.

Nick is still such a good example of how no matter what level you play in college...you can compete at the highest level. Still crazy to think that a DIII athlete has competed at such a high level

It doesn’t matter if you’ve won or not but you still got a medal. This might be one of the top 3 most satisfying races. You have the second best kick in the 800m ever

Today I was thinking about my city league championship where I had built up for 4 years to be the varsity 1600M champion. I was the county champion this season so I came into the race with confidence. Led the whole race and with 300M to go, I lengthened my stride and began to kick at 250M (in my usual style, since speed isn't my gift). With 70M to go I was outkicked and got second, I was shocked but it was fair! It's been 5 years, but I still think about it from time to time during my training runs even now, as a 24 year old. I will continue to use this upset as fuel for my future goals on the roads in the 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and beyond! Great to hear this story, Nick! Thank you for your insight into your fascinating career!

But Nick, I’m a former 800 meter runner here, talking to you now. Coe was my guy, my hero, the one who I looked up to, and kept me going. This is my favorite one yet! As an 800m runner, I love breaking down my races and learning from them. It’s fun hearing your breakdowns. I would love to see the video on what a professional runner makes. I think that ransparency will help the sport!

I really do enjoy these videos, as someone who loved to watch my own races back I love looking at professionals doing the same so there isn't any fuzziness from spectator assumptions. I would also definitely like to hear more about life as a professional runner. While I'm far from the times I would need to run, it was a dream of mine running in college and one I still believe I can achieve.

Love this explanation. I remember being shook watching you both times. As an oregon native and getting to meet you in 08 at the trials I always saw you as a local star absolutely killing it. The way you ran and the longer hair you had in the early years reminded me of Pre's grit and energy 💪
Loved this video just to hear what was in your head. Younger me, when I was a HS/D3 runner, really would have benefitted from the nuggets you shared here. T&F knowledge and coaching have come so far since my days on the oval. Thanks for what you are doing for the next herd (for the Bison in you) coming up and for us old runners who are still out there or have returned to the roads.

Although I do not join big running competitions, representing a country like you, you make me being able to relate some of the "moments" in each of the running contest I have joined, kinda like a flashback of some of those moments, making my heart racing too.
