I'm not here to brag about how much money I made or to whine about how little I earned. The goal of this channel is to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what life was like as a professional runner. 2015 was a very good year for me, but a bit of an outlier. Most year's I made significantly less. What other BTS info would you like to hear about? Let me know in the comments below or DM me on Instagram here: instagram.com/nicksymmonds

Working in finance, I just want to say thanks for posting videos regarding finances at all, especially knowing you have a lot of young followers. This is a great service to them, so many people are afraid to discuss financial information at all that it really hurts young people as they reach adulthood and have to learn how to manage finances without any guidance.

Honestly the transparency is greatly appreciated. I have always been curious how much runners make because they're not like "other" athletes who have signed a contract with a professional organization and are designated to one league. Obviously your numbers differ from runner to runner but it gives us a good glimpse how it may be for other runners. Thanks dude! Cheers from Boise!

The federal tax rate in 2013 for that bracket (184k-398k) was 33%. The lower and higher bracket rates were 28% and 35% respectively. The Oregon tax rate was 9.9% for the highest bracket. If you were writing things off correctly as an llc, you should have been paying taxes closer to the high 30% range, not 50%.

Yeah, I don't have the time to tell all the differences my friends and I had with a running income. I was lucky that I never needed it. One of my friends who was a gold and bronze Olympic medalist was offered a $2,000 appearance fee for a 1985 race because it would keep her away. It was a made-for-TV race and they didn't want her in it. Narrative. I know another friend was getting $3,000 in appearance fees on the 1989 Grand Prix Circuit in Europe at 26 years old. Another friend had a three-year $150,000 contract in 1990. Then there were the under-the-table-payouts. I knew many and how a few were taken good care of while others were scraping by.

Don't stake your future on this paying off, kids. Nick is the exception. My friend was sponsored for a few years and in his best year he grossed $2200 plus free gear (no agent). He was a 4:13 mile and 14:45 5K. If you are able to parlay running into a college scholarship you are among the top 1-2% of young runners and you did really well for yourself.
    Great insight Nick

15 percent seems to be the standard rate which is fair. I never knew you made so much money. If I knew that I would've made a stronger push towards chasing my dream. 40k a year would've been my baseline in like 2016. I just didn't believe it could happen

  • @jaykay6387

Wow, thought for sure you were going to say that you grossed close to seven figures, really surprised by those amounts.
But you participated in two Olympic Games, and I wouldn't trade that for a billion dollars and I have a pretty strong suspicion you wouldn't either. There are some things
    that money just can't buy.

No matter how fast or slow you run, please listen carefully to what Nick says here. Gross income is not net income. Expenses and taxes are very important considerations, no matter what your profession. After that, there are financial obligations that younger viewers might easily overlook. Health insurance and retirement saving are critical and well worth it, but will cut into your monthly cash flow. Spend some time learning financial basics. There is almost nothing you can do for 10 hours that is more monetarily valuable than reading a few books and/or watching a few videos to learn about finance.

Hi I’m obviously not Nic Simmons but I do live in extremely hot place so these are my thoughts. It’s about the same because if you live in a place that cold or your average times and runs will be faster with less effort meaning that you can run faster but if you run an extremely hot environments like I do then you’re training places will be affected a little bit by that and then when you go to cool environment you go faster so that negates the heat

Everyone has a sweet spot for weather. I ran PR's when it was in the upper 20s to 40F. I raced poorly above 70F. A college teammate wouldn't race below 60F and did great at 90F.

Hi, How are you being affected by the Covid-19 from a small business perspective? I run my own software consulting company and had to go from LLC to W2 and attach myself to a bigger company just to stay in "business". Also did Ryan Hall let you stay with him on the 3 mile run? Was he toying with you? Lol

When do you think does an athlete need to train(age wise) at least two times a day if he wants to be a pro?

What is your advice for balancing across training with running well?

Getting paid to do for what you love is pretty cool but track and field athletes should make more. Also olympians in general should make more. Maybe these organisations don't make NBA/NFL/Football level of money but they still make way more percentage wize than they should.

Thanks for the insight, really, this is fascinating. Two sponsors, is this common? No non-compete clause between Nike and Brooks?

Get your name to sponsors and start building a following. Try to get a scholarship too and then build your following

Those are very good times especially as a sophomore in high school! I don't have professional experience or anything but I'd say keep trying to get faster and listen to your coach. Try to find a college program where you'll succeed in your running career. Try to build a name for yourself as someone who could be sponsored. Hope that helps

Just keep practicing. Those are solid times for a sophomore but being able to run in college (division 1) is hard enough. I ran track and knew people running those events in high school at 48,1:58, and 4:20-4:30 and none ran in college.
