How should I train for a marathon?
@@MiguelLopez-ll4in there are a TON of marathon training programs out there! Check out soundrunning.run
How difficult is it to get sponsored by Nike or other brands?
@@dominicbehar4322 very, very difficult. Pretty much impossible without an agent.
Nick you’re so arrogant we get it you had a good running career. “TwELve YeArs oF mAkiNG moNEy aS a PRo ruNnEr”
I once won a community 5k race and received a $50 gift card to a local running store. The race only cost $25 to enter, so that was pretty sweet. And they had bagels and juice too.
😂
Whar was your result?
More than nick made in the Olympics tbf
That’s awesome hro
@@dylanfritz3048 OMG YES
I ran a 2x 50mile ultras and got a piece of wood.
90k for one race? Holy crap, I’d pay 50$ just to race
I bet he's made even more money from RUN GUM sales. Anyhow props to you 👏
You would be correct :D
With all due respect to Bolt, I'd put Edwin Moses up against Usain Bolt, adjusting Moses' income for inflation. The finances were a little bit complicated back then (more so than what Nick mentions in this video), but he was so dominant in the 400IH, and no slouch in the open 400m, so any time he showed up for a meet he'd attract a crowd. I used to attend the Mt. SAC Relays (Pomona, Calif) every year and you noticed how much bigger the crowds were at that meet when he was entered.
Cross Link That’s going to be Erriyon Knighton in a few years. Mu and McLaughlin, too.
Is this the founder of run gum?😳😳
one of them!! :D
YEAAAH BABY!
Maybe I’m not sure
Dude you gotta post these to Spotify as podcasts. Or just start podcasting, love all the great advice and info!!
Yes, I could listen to him on the regular telling stories and giving advice.
Love this man! You can’t name another runner in the game who goes out of their way to be so honest and transparent about every aspect of pro running! Thank you Nick!
Usain Bolt is the highest paid athlete in track and field ever!
I believe it!!
Also one of the most iconic ones, so that'd make sense
No way - shock and horror
No shit
Also one of the most underpaid if you look at the specifics
I know a pro women rower who made 16$ from Olimpics.
Thousand?
@@lutlut350 probably I doubt she made only 16 dollars
It was 16 dollars, Nick said in the video you make very little money from Olympics if you're not a medalist
Oh my goodness nick is so active in the comment section.
I like how this is one of the few comments he didn’t respond to 😆

WOOOH another Nick Symmonds video! HOW ARE YOU NICK!?
feeling good today!! How are you?
Good thanks Nick
103 seconds and walk away with 90k. What a champ.
Runners are way underpaid. Maybe the community would be bigger if pay was higher
yeah too bad most ppl dont follow running other than major breakthroughs like the sub 2 hour marathon
Unfortunately it kind of works the other way around. The bigger the community the higher the pay. Not enough people tune in or follow running as closely as other major sports. I wish this wasn’t the case but sadly it is.

I won $20 gift card for an age group win in a 5k once. The entry fee was $10 but also got a t-shirt and a free breakfast. I was also paid once to sub in a hockey game, so I am a pro in 2 sports just like Bo Jackson lol.
My friend had about 2 or 2.5 years about 20 years back when he was sponsored (free shoes and gear) and he picked up a couple grand per year running/winning races in the mid Atlantic. He ran a 4:13 mile and 14:45 for 5k. Obviously you can't live on that, so that combined with his legs breaking down took him out. But he was 15-20 seconds too slow in the mile and a minute or so slow in 5K to get to where Nick was.
Hey Nick i still remember that race of yous in which rudisha broke the wr and even you still lost that race but the way you came back from last to 5 position was really comendable
Interesting to hear what you said in this vid! You'd think that the Olympics would have big appearance fees but I guess not, though it makes sense that only the medalists get paid big bucks. It also makes sense that something like the World Championships are what you made the most money in.
This dude is so cool and genuine:)
That's so cool! I hope one day I can be like you! You're my #1 inspiration! Thank you!! Keep on doing what you do!
Mad hustle Nick!! Respect all the way from Singapore :-))
I didn’t think I had ocd until I realized how much the crooked photos on the wall is bugging me! Great video though!
do a vid where you run an all out race in jumping spikes😂😂
My favorite skilled runner
I love the authenticity of this channel. One of my biggest dreams was to be an Olympic track star one day, but now at least I can live vicariously through Nick's UA-cam channel haha. Btw Nick I am curious about something I've heard about athletes getting post-Olympic depression. Many of them spend their entire life trying to make it to the Olympics and then once it's over after they've had their fame or lack thereof, they often fall into depression. Do you have any experience with that? I think a vid talking about this would be really interesting. Thanks love the channel!
cant wait for the total pro earnings vid!
Best UA-camr!!!!!
I appreciate you saying that!!!
In my Top 10 favorite channels. (Both of yours). I'm really proud of the work you're putting in to build up and inspire others. I love running and it's something I want more people to love also, so what you are doing means a lot to me.
You seem like a really cool dude. I enjoy all of your content. Keep it up!
I cannot hardly imagine how Olympics athletes could keep training everyday when they need to worry about moneys; From where I came from (China), Gov selects those top talents at a very young age and sponsors them to win the Olympics games
Thanks for sharing this Nick👍
This is so interesting I never knew half of what you’ve shared in this video
I know that there is a pandemic going on but you should do a video with the athlete special. 😀
COME ON NICKK
by the way how do you edit your videos, I mean which program do you use?
Most I got paid was some muffins and a orange at the finish line
How many pairs of shoes do you actually wore in your whole career? 😂
great question!! hundreds for sure. Prob not thousands.
I'd say at least 3 pairs... probably
I’m watching this in school
same
You are an awesome runner!!!
Was not surprised that you did not get prize money from Olympics, was surprised that World Championships DID give prize money.
Love the content!!!
Man, he is an inspiration. Thank you sir!
thank you!
Sounds somewhat like the Tour de France bicycle race riders. The winner doesn't get all that much in prize money, but the follow-on income from advertisers, sponsors, and appearance fees at events and other pro bicycle races is where you really bank those paydays. Its no wonder so many of those riders cheated in the past (and some still do) as the pay-off is so great.
I've also heard Gene Simmons (the band KISS) mention their biggest income source over the years has been from marketing of 'KISS'-branded merchandise, not concert fees or record sales. Weird how the world works.
To save you time it was 90k, pretty mad
I’ve been training for about 3 months and have gotten my 5K from about 30 minutes to 19. I just wish I could make it to your races even though I wouldn’t even win the $100 lol
Very informative.
Nick Always helping out the youth, gotta love it
Still no downvotes!
hey nick, when you mentioned you learned stuff from the kenyans in toluca, what exactly did you learn? I'd be curious to know what a difference meeting them made on you :)
mostly how to structure a day full of training. How to be able to double nearly every day.
@@NickSymmondsToo thank you! I appreciate that :D
That is not a bad payday on a per-hour basis. For those of us who can't run a 1:43 800. You want to make money in sports? Be a referee or umpire. That is a good payday for those of us who don't have world-class speed.
Nice Video. I Love it
The most money I ever made at a competition was 50€. At least it's something 😅
Maybe if you grab something very valuable and try it
"Delayed gratification" is a term not a lot of millenials understand.
they should! It is extremely important in long term successes.
@@NickSymmondsToo Without a doubt! Generally, people see the the 800m time or other success (personal or professional) and don't grasp the prior years of work that was put in and the vision it took to get there. The route you took through a small college to have a great running career gives you more credibility in my mind than the races you won.
millenials are alright. the Gen Z is far worse.
Nick: great info as always. You have a great balance between the informative vids and the entertainment vids. Keep it up!
Nick Symmonds has been controversial. However, he made the most out of his career and his novel chewing gum. He's an interesting person with energy. That gum must work.
Hi Nick. I'm one of your subscribers. I REALLY admire professional middle and distance runners. There's MUCH easier ways to make money (more steady too). One REALLY has to be PASSIONATE about what they do to run professionally (not including sprinters😉).
6:15 the point
If nick were paid at that rate but by the hour he’d have an annual income of 6.5 billion working 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year
I doubt Nick answers but if anyone knows I’m curious. Say you’re given $5,000-$10,000 in appearance fee money. Do you then use a portion of that to pay for your flight, hotel etc? Or does the meet, or your sponsor, pay for those typically?
If my math is correct $90,000 for 103.55 seconds of work is $869.15/second. At 60 seconds per minute, 60 minutes per hour, 40 hours per work week, and 52 weeks per year, that's the equivalent of making $6,508,160,309.03/year.
You are real atomic habitter !
This was quite informative, Nick! Thanks for sharing this with us!
thanks for watching!
Well, dang, I've made a $150 from a local road race. You got me beat!
How many races a year did you do typically?
How fast were you in high school? 400,800,1500 and what ever else you ran. I want to know the times (and beat them :)
6:12 is what you came for
Imagine this guy got a bronze in London 2012, stacking racks.
As a fan of track and field, this really opened my eyes. Great video, as always
You should measure your stride and calculate how much money you make per step
I image-searched RUM GUN in Google. Not disappointed, lol.
hey, Nick, what's that key on the wall behind you?
YES!!
The thumbnail 😂
Hey Nick I absolutely love all of your videos and you are very inspiring. But I have a question I have my national cross country meet coming up and am I suppose to be feeling really good on my runs and are they supposed to feel easy or is it okay that they still feel hard and I am tapering but how much should I be tapering? It is in one week.
It's ok to feel a bit sluggish during a taper. Remember you want to taper volume, not intensity. I like a 10-14 taper typically.
Thank you so much Nick!
America undervalues its runners. It wasn’t always that way. I would never put in that much work even if I had the talent. Hats off to you Nick!
At this rate, The World Championships will overtake the Olympics when it comes to importance to an athletes's career.
I can't believe athletes don't get paid at the Olympics.Just like WC in football, the UEFA Champions League is most prestige Football Tournament now. Mainly because it pays better, and it happens every year so better pay days.
All the hype of representing your country is nothing if you cant pay the bills. I can see, athletes will soon have to decide if the Olympics (who pays nothing if you don't medal) or the World Championship is for them to compete in, many atheletes have an Olympic hangover the next year and don't perform.
So, Nick, ever thought about becomming a meet director?
Hi Nick , i got a question for u . how and what we should eat before the race or competition which needs effort
1:43 minutes to make 90k dollars
Worth over 15 years of hard work
when you won more in a local 10k than nick did at the olypmics lmao
Hey Nick, great video! What do you think the 1st place won in that race? Just curious. Thanks!
I would guess he might have actually made less. Depends on how his contract with Adidas was written.
You and other running channels have made work hard for getting ready for cross country next year
06:20 that was 90k... well deserved
How hard should I push my kids to run distance?
Interesting but the 40% tax is not correct
The real question though is do you make more now even though you’re not racing 😀
The question is what does the average pro runner make per year. Probably much less than you made?
Are you still gonna do that video on how drug testing works and why it's so invasive? We made the "like" threshold!

Nvm I don’t want to run in the Olympic Games anymore, dreams ruined, Thanks Nick!
Jk just made me feel better about having that as a goal, no matter how hard it may be to achieve, and it gave me a new, improved view on Olympic athletes that doubled my respect for them. Nick, you showed me that you and all the other Olympic runners go out there and train all year, not to “make bank,” but instead because they truly love running. Thank you so much Nick!
