B Xx I know...this race is so memorable and it was a complete surprise as well because people weren't expecting something like this as most people had their eyes on waiting for Usain Bolt to run
Insightful analysis as usual. However, I think it's also important to note that his initial form in the first 200m was very different from his last 100m. I understand that the camera angle in this video doesn't really allow for a clear form breakdown, but maybe you should note it as well?

The 400m is almost entirely anaerobic, there isn’t the time for oxygen to pass through the crebs cycle to re-snthesis the atp, while there is more aerobic than in the 100 or 200m there is still very little and not enough for breathing technique to be a significant point as it is mostly the pc then lactic acid system used (if it was significantly aerobic the lactic acid build up wouldn’t occur)

I used to think it was more anaerobic too, but people have been doing some studies on it too. I also agree that utilizing the kreb's cycle is slower relative to using the the anaerobic process, but these processes themselves are super fast...otherwise we would run out of energy very quickly. Heres an article of one of the studies done to test it...the 400m still is more of an anerobic activity, but the split between aerobic might be closer than one originally thinks...its surprised me too! www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11194103

My personal experience is that when it comes to the last 100m, how you breathe in the first 300m did count because all those oxygen you stored can help reduce the lactic accumulation

I dont understand about leg pronation
I fail to see from the veru distant video footage you can analysis and come to a conclusion his breathing is controlled?
Thanks JP, this was informative and I learned some new things about the foot. I have noticed in the faster events the arms seem to be higher and higher than the middle and distance runners. Why is this?, Can you explain this with some videos of sprinters versus longer runner? Thanks
Marcus Conway Great question! When sprinting at higher speeds, forces produced in the legs are increased, including the rotational forces as well. Based on what I said in the video, the arms will have to move more to counter that increased force. There are some other reasons why, but that's one of the main ones. Also, I was planning on making a video about that. Great suggestion!!
Good stuff overall, but the inclusion of pronation wasn't necessary since that's a bit of an unimportant detail in relation to running very fast if he has plain neutral pronation, which he seems to have.
I agree! I was just trying to say pronation is a normal part of running, but yess....its nothing very unique as you'll see this in most runners!
