    Now this guy is amazing. If he'd been active in the golden age of rock he'd be mentioned in the same breath as Entwistle et al. Technically, of course, he is miles better. He really is the Guthrie of bassists, or vice versa.

      @reilly-vc1rm which is why I used the word "technically". Try reading the whole comment. Entwistle was way cooler, and brilliant, but there's literally nothing he played that Charles couldn't learn in an hour. Technically. Would he have the same raw power? No. But show John a piece of Charles' music and he wouldn't have a clue.

    Now that's an unexpected but completely sensible episode!
    I like his thinking, because it took me like 20 years to notice how interesting you can be with bass lines even if you sit in the "background" as opposed to just plucking that lowest note all the time. How the bass line really sets a lot of emotions to the layers built on it, changing the whole feel by their note choice. And there's room for bass solos in songs, sometimes more than for guitar solos even. A lot of artists don't really explore that far even if they're creating rather exploratory music or even if they utilize a lot of arranging and production hooks. I think it was Tool and Opeth that hinted at me about "hey, forget the guitar, listen to what this bass is doing".
    There's been some thrash metal type of songs where I've heard bass solos too, as an almost inside joke of the band, but I think they sounded pretty good. Like those bassists were always on the spot with their musical sense more than maybe the guitarists, they didn't go overboard and started kinda from the theme of the music so it was simple, brief and fit greatly in the song. Similar to how sometimes a rock/pop band's guitar solo is just a bar or few based on the main theme and that fits the song great, not going overboard with soloing. I think bassists generally got that down much better than guitarists, not overplaying. Perhaps partially due to their instrument already being slightly limiting depending on the sound, you start losing distinctness of the notes if you go too hard on the wrong part of the neck.
    The outro I swear is from NES's Darkwing Duck game (which was probably "borrowed" from somewhere where Charles' inspiration comes from).

    Davie might have helped a lot in making people aware of Charles, but can't deny how incredibly fast he was able to adapt to that and grow his channel as much as he did. Charles obviously put a lot of effort to ride the wave while it was hot and it takes a lot of hard work to be successful at it, kudos to you! You are awesome Charles!

    Wishing all the best for this young man. I'm a big fan of Wooten and I love it when bassists use the instrument as he did in the outro. Works magically on bass. Back in the MySpace days I remember watching an American bassist (apologies I can't remember his name) who had videos of him playing songs this way, rhythm with left hand whilst tapping the vocal melody with his right. I remember he did a beautiful version of Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight".

    • @JVR10893
      @JVR10893 3 місяці тому

      @@kalidesu I used to think this way. As a teenager I was a Cliff Burton fanboy who refused to use anything other than a four string, but having the extended range of a five string or sometimes even a six string makes it so I can play songs without spanning a long stretch of the fretboard, as it’s easier to sing and play at the same time when my hand can stay relatively stationary on the fretboard, not to mention I rarely have to change tunings or bring multiple instruments since if a song requires a note lower than E, I have the low B string there to give me those extra low notes. When you’re a gigging musician who doesn’t have a devoted road crew, you start to care about convenience more than anything else, and in most situations, having that extra low string is the most convenient option for the types of gigs I play.
