Wow, I just caught this video and in finding Karlyn. What a gem she was. By far the most engaging, friendly, energetic, talented teacher/artist I have come across. Her personality comes across so inviting and warm. And that love for art that she exudes. A one of a kind person and I was sad to read she passed...but it seems like she had a rich full life doing what she loved.
I could watch you paint all day, except I’m feeling so inspired I now feel like running into my studio! I loved everything about this video ❤ Thank you so much for sharing ☺️
I mourn Karlyn's passing. An incredible artist. Her workshops were amazing. I took at least 5 of them.. I have all her books and refer to them in my classes that I teach all the time.
Yoh, I just discovered her. Such love and passion for the medium. Wo derful lsdy! Now hope to find more if her tutorials and you said books. Thanks for letting us know. 🙏💞
Hello Diane I’ve only just found Karlyn on UA-cam in her video How to use the Elegant Writer calligraphy Marker. Then I read your comment: Shewas a very remarkable woman in many ways that’s easy to see. I’ve been watching her videos with amazement and awe. I bet you miss her terribly. I know through my learning about art when I meet an amazing tutor they are also amazing people. Just so willing to give of their knowledge in such a generous way and in Karlyns case with a huge dose of humour, curiosity and play thrown in for good measure. I’m planning on getting her books of course that’s a no-brainer!! but I do have a couple of questions and you might be just the lovely person who could answer them for me please. I noticed that she seems to be using watercolour paper and it seems to be primed with something as it is sounds stiff when she moves the paper in the recordings. I’m wondering if it might be a white coloured or transparent Gesso that she’s using as a primer. also I’m wondering what type and brand she prefers using? It might be hot or cold pressed watercolour paper also if it’s 140lb? You might be privy to this information and be able to help me please? Kind regards and happy creating Jaynee
@@jjoy2866 I don't know if I can answer your questions or not since I never had any of Karlyn's classes, but in this video it said she was using Hot Press paper. I don't believe she was using gesso for this video. Watercolor paper can be bendy in lower weights, but heavier weights are stiffer, so it could be 140# or 300#, but it really doesn't matter because the pen should perform about the same on either weight. It just depends on what you want to work with. Lighter weights are less expensive, so practice is a bit more affordable using them. As for surfaces, a cold press or rough paper surface could give a bit different look than hot press. Odds are also good that she was working on 100% cotton. I have been playing with the pen on 100% cotton 140# cold press, and it seems to work just fine for me. Try it on what you have, and if you aren't happy, maybe buy one of those packs of paper with assorted surfaces and weights that can be found at places like Blick or Cheap Joes. Good luck, and have fun! :)
What an incredibly magical pen! Also, Karlyn is such a joy to watch! Her hubby's picture as her "Fine Mister".... haha! That brought so much joy to my heart.
Karlyn you are just the sweetest, happiest most lively artist I have ever watched on UA-cam.... this is the first time I got to see you, even though I have seen your videos before...... and oh yeah...the work you did with the elegant writer was amazing..... you are an inspiration !!! thank you for the lesson
Your bright smiling personality made this even more fun to watch! I cant wait to watch more of your videos..........thank you for sharing your talent and giving me inspiration!
Cheap Joe's Art Stuff - Art Supplies I just bought this pen because a great artist thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich mentioned in a video last week and searching for a demo I found this one and OMG did I hit the art jackpot! It is so enticing to see someone having this much fun while painting/making art! Every time she smiles and chuckles, I find myself doing the same thing; it's just contagious and I love it!! Thanks for sharing!! I wish I had an art teacher like her because I would have loved art even much more than I do!! I'm going to bed with such a smile in my face right now; thanks for that!
This is exciting!!! Did you find this by accident??? Your excitement is like that first cup of coffee in the morning!!! Energizing!! I am a retired graphic designer as well. I just love your art!!
I love Artist Karlyn Holman--she is sooo awesome! Cheap Joe is one of my FAV ARTISTS TOO! Thank you! I am going to show this video in my mixed media class this week in Cumming, GA--near ATL.
I'm so thrilled to discover you. Have the pens but have never tried them with water. Looks like a whole new world has been opened up. Can't wait to try it out. Thank you SO much . P.
Karyln, I really like this. I've just started using the Elegant Writer Marker myself. It is a lot of fun. But I really like how you add color to your paintings after. Also I didn't know to "set" the marker with your mister. That's a GREAT TIP !! tHANKS sOOOOO MUCH ! :)
I watched this video when it first came out and have been wanting those crayons ever since. I finally got them a few months ago, and they're so much fun. I had to come back to the video that inspired me to get them.
This was such a wonderful video, and if my eyes had not seen it I would not believe it. I really was amazed at how "juicy" to use Karlyn's words, the pen is. I love her work, and am wondering if she does workshops around the midwest. Actually, I would follow her to Ireland!!
Oh, I am so happy to have "accidently" found you on youtube! I'm watching all your tutorials I can find. Hope you continue making them. theres something magical about watching watercolors doing their thing on wet wet paper!
OMG i just love Karlyn Holman now! :) love her way, her voice. She explains things so well! This is an incredible tecnhique!!!! I will certainly try it!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Great tutorial by an master educator! I enjoyed her relaxed style and look forward to learning more from this wonderful lady. She is generous with her knowledge and explains technique so well! Thank you.
What a fun technique, I have to try it! And you seem to be a lovely enthusiastic teacher....I hope I get to meet you and take a class from you one of these days!
This was a wonderful video and I will be purchasing these crayons. Only this Friday I purchased the Elegant Writers and already am in love with them. XXX Sandy
Thanks for this amazing demo. Your tips will really help. I tried using the pen a bit and I already really love it. I wish your web page had a series on just the use of this pen! :) It would be nice to see these with the added color too.
“Too bad this isn’t any fun” - “my fine mister, my husband”!!! Lol lol! Love your humour and your enthusiasm! More than that, though, I LOVE your creativity. I’ve just discovered these pens on UA-cam and just have to get them. All your examples are simply stunning... Even before I explore your channel and see more of your work, you’ve got a new subscriber!
This was delightful. I had no idea the pen would bleed and make such beautiful colors. Makes we wish I could draw, but will try anyway. Elegant Writer sellers should really appreciate your video.
Definitely one of the best tutorials I've seen on UA-cam... not only informative but absolutely beautiful artwork explained so clearly... I'm now a fan! =}
I like the colors that came out when you added water. I have an Elegant Writer in black. Haven't used it yet. That may one of my new year's resolutions- to finally make something with the EW pen. Might even try using the salt. I love your video. You've given me several ideas on to use the pen.
Utterly captivating! I’ve just found you today - wonderfully helpful and informative, thanks so much. I have my elegant writers, and now, I’m not afraid to use them! 😉
I really love Karlyn's sense of humor and art style. What a great video! I had no idea the Elegant Writer pens stabilized after adding water, or that they bled out into greens and pinks. I've only ever used them for calligraphy, and wasn't particularly satisfied with them for that purpose. Now that I know what they are capable of, I have something new to try.
Karlyn this is such a cool technique, who knew. I was mesmerized by each project you shared. It is so neat how a black pen turns to greens and pinks when wet. I am so glad Lindsay (Thefrugalcrafter) shared your video with us. Take care.
I keep coming back to this video. Thank you. Questions: Now there are tips ranging from 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, etc. I see you used a 2.5 in this video. Have you ever used the other widths? Also: Now it comes in a variety of colors. Is black still the best?
You are just so awesome to watch, this is the 2nd time watching this video. I love your smile and enthusiasm. The paintings are amazing. I ordered the pens and am excited to try this technique. Thank you sooooooo much!
You know what? This lady is sharing some love. It's like getting kissed watching her teach you something that is joyful. Absolutely one of the best videos on youtube ever - for me anyway. I can't wait to watch more stuff from her. After 10 years online hers is the first I will have subscribed to. Bring more, more, more and thank you SOOO much.

I could watch you paint all day, except I’m feeling so inspired I now feel like running into my studio! I loved everything about this video ❤ Thank you so much for sharing ☺️
LOVE how free she is - she splats the water, tilts it, throws on salt. No mucking about 🙂 excellent!
At 7:34 I laughed so hard at Fine Mr.! So wholesome that you put a picture of your husband on the fine mister bottle. So sweet
I mourn Karlyn's passing. An incredible artist. Her workshops were amazing. I took at least 5 of them.. I have all her books and refer to them in my classes that I teach all the time.
