Really enjoyed this. As a kid and teen I always had a sketchbook and loved to draw. Adulthood and life got me away from that. I'm now 49 and have noticed I am missing that creativity in my life and thought adding watercolors to drawings could be cool. Thanks for the great video.

Hi Alphonso, I've been with you from the beginning and will be with you for as long as you're willing to do these videos. Your artwork leaves me speechless, which, paradoxically, can be observed by me talking out loud to your videos. Things like, "oh my god," and "no way," are pretty common things that come out of my mouth as I watch the magic unfold. You're a genius, and your generosity in doing these videos is a true gift to us all. My sincerest thanks.

thank you, I've watched a bunch of your videos and finally had a breakthrough moment today where I finally feel like I "got" watercolors! Sir, you are the best teacher on the web as far as I'm concerned. I've been watching many of your tutorials for the past few days and barely drawing just because I was enjoying your teaching ways so much. As a teacher myself, for more than 25 years, and always a pupil, I have to acknowledge a master of the trade when I see him and you are one.
Thanks so much for your generosity. I will be basing my next months of learning to draw on your lessons. I feel I have found a treasure.

And yet another super tutorial on flowers!!! The one I was waiting for so long!!!
I was about to abandon water color because I sucked at it. It always look liked like gouache in the end.
But now you give me the courage to try it again in a different ways.
And it was the same with my design.
I was about to give up but since I began to watch your tutorial... it is hard to explain.
It is like listening to you help me dig down my buried talents that were 6 feet under the ground.
So thank you again for your excellent work and also to be the best teacher of all time.

Thank you so much! I didn't have anyone who can teach me to paint (somehow, none of the art teachers in my school draw or paint -they're more on the "history of art" teacher, if you know what I mean. They can't draw). Nobody around me can draw (or have time to sit down and draw with me), and parents didn't allow me to go to art school or take art/painting course either, so I was really on my own, and it was a really lonely world. It really is a blessing that now we have the internet and infrastructure supporting it. Watching your videos motivates me to take another try on drawing and watercolor (I really suck at it, and wish I have someone who can show me how to use it properly). Thank you for laying it down so clearly, and simply. I will continue watching your videos and listening to your explanations. They really are the best! Like having a brother who teaches me to draw and paint. Thank you. I have a 2 year old daughter. She's been my motivation as well. One day, I will show her your video too!

Hi there! OMG! I so excited! During the plandemic I taught myself how to watercolor by watching video on YT. Watercolor was ALWAYS my evil nemesis. The only medium I didn't understand because of my dyslexia. Then I bought these TOMBO Ink pens, made in Thailand. I didn't knw what to do with them. Ive even forgotten how to draw. The other day I started drawing. Theses pens are a trip! Then I added my watercolor. When everything dried the result was incredible! Now I am addicted! I found you.. and have fallen in love! Thank you so much for being here!! I went to you website too! WOW!!You are amazing! Thank you thank you thank you! xoxo

I upgraded my watercolor pencils to good ones from beginner, and did the lily tutorial along with you. I was especially keen to learn this the ink sketching and shading techniques for flowers. You have a distinct way of making the initial layout so darned easy to grasp that by the time you get to the details they are almost afterthoughts. Once I started laying in color with the new pencils holy smokes did the flower pop! It is such a pleasure learning from you, Alphonso. Keep up the great work!

Watercolor is my favorite medium, but my weakest. I love it for the challenging aspect of controlling the color and water mixture. I tend to struggle on it when it comes to being patient, waiting for something to dry or layering if I'm in a rushing mood, or if I'm trying to do a wet-on-wet technique and I don't use the water spray bottle in time and allow parts to dry. I got a Winsor & Newton watercolor pocket set too, and I love it. I have cheaper quality as well, in case I won't to try something new.

This is great, the way the water flows and falls unpredictably is just gorgeous. I love the feel, it's an amazing form of illustration possibly and as an piece of art is fantastic. I love using water colours, I don't use them as much as I want to but this will push me to do so. Though, I currently have a clothing design project aimed (16 - 25) for a clothing store under the tittle "Born Wild", but I don't have anything in mind yet, no fixed ideas whatsoever but the way you explained this and the outcome of the way the colours and the drawing look just may give me a great leap and now its up to the design that reflects the title. (Don't know if I'm supposed to talk about it, oh well... Oops.)

Stunning outcome Alphonso and thank you for taking the time to share. I particularly liked the way you explained breaking the line, something I've not done in my pen work before. I slavishly follow each line!!!! Pen and wash is a "loose" and lovely way to paint (I also use acrylic paint and acrylic ink) and your expression adds so much to the sense of fluidity and delicate nature of flowers. Getting ready to use your insights in my art class on Thursday where I hope to surprise my teacher. Thanks again

You're videos are absolutely brilliant and I've learnt so much already! I don't know if you take requests for topics but I thought there's no harm in asking :) Would you be able to do a video on materials and tools? I often wonder when I'm watching your videos what grade of pencil you're using, what width of pen nib or what type of paper you're using. You've mentioned a few times that it's important to know the limitations of your chosen pens, pencils and papers, and I thought it would be great if you could let us know when you'd definitely not use certain pens, pencils and papers too. What would you say the essential travel pack for an "urban" sketcher should contain?
No worries at all if you can't. The videos are invaluable and it's great you find the time to make them! Really looking forward to your book :)
    Thank you!

Inuka Jayasekera Thanks and no worries at all. I did start a materials video. Part 1 is here ua-cam.com/video/9srD5CxeOWU/v-deo.html . I will eventually discuss paper and on to pencil as well. However I don't advise being to extravagant with supplies at all. Simpler is better, especially in the beginning. For outdoor sketching you really just need simple stuff. I'll discuss that in that series as well. But for know this can include a soft lead pencil (perhaps HB-2B, eraser, a small ruler (6") if you think you need it, pen (ball point, roller ball, drawing pen, brush pen, etc), small sketchbook, portable watercolor set.

If you have two cups of water your water can last longer and properly clean the brush so you don’t get the colors mixed. Dip in cup #1 and then cup #2. I saw this tip from an art teacher who uploaded videos on youtube and it helped out so much to keep the colors clear and I don’t have to break and get new water halfway through anymore. 🙂

Enjoyed this very much. I, too, am mostly a self educated artist...but us old folks didn't have internet but, now that I'm retired & have time, I'm making up for lost time. People ask me where I went to art school. I tell them Univ. of You Tube & sight your videos among others as my best teachers! Thanks for what you do, Alphonso & I think it's cool how fast your subscibers have grown.
