It looks like a fun, freeing method - good to get away from compulsive over-detailing.
Thank you for sharing. I have always loved the random look of watercolor paintings due to the paint and the water working together in new and interesting ways. Your technique is an even better version of the wet into wet technique. Love the texture.
What a beautiful technique! Thank you for sharing!
Loved this technique. I've just tried it. Beautiful results. Thank you
Love the free style technique and just working with whatever comes up, thanks.
Just Beautiful! Most creative approach. Thank you.

Amazing! I cant wait to try this. Thank you so much for sharing.
ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL PROCESS....THANKS FOR SHARING.....
I just went to an art show where the artist used Japanese paper glued to a gallery wrapped canvas and painted with watercolor. I was surfing for a How - to and found you. Thanks for posting this. It's lovely.
Lovely. Great technique to achieve actual texture for watercolour paintings. Thanks for sharing.
As.usual, amazingly Beautiful !!!!😊😊😊
Beautiful and inspiring! I love the way you take an art form and reinterpret it in your own way :-) I can´t wait to try it. Subscribed!
Beautiful! You're very talented!
Batik does look like this after its finished even though she didn't do the actual process. When she says "style" she means looks like or kind of like.... its beautiful! And as an art teacher, I think this is a brilliant way to introduce new techniques that look "Batikish" ;)
Ada Bowers HA, new word! It's very very pretty, just confusing.
I disagree
Once again, blew me away
Beautiful work! Thank you!
Absolutely stunning, a joy to watch. hugs Tibby xxx

Very beautiful.. As always!
Thank you for your kind comment : ) i glad you enjoyed it!!!
Good unic 👍
Is the kozo paper laid over watercolor paper or will it work with other (more affordable than watercolor maybe) papers?
Great video and stunning painting! What is KOZO washi and where do I get some?
It Really is A PIECE of Work
Thank you!! 😊
Love your creativity..marvellous to watch..enjoyed the sand & cheese cloth technique
Thank you for watching!!!! I'm glad you enjoy it : ) I love cheese cloth technique. You can achieve intricate and detailed texture without much work!

Thank you! It's so lovely. Did you smooth the piece down flat at some point? Or does it stay wrinkled? Just learning.
Tree Notion thank you for your comment! The wrinkled paper is glued on to the other paper or board so it is stack wrinkled. If you don’t glue it, you can probably un wrinkle it. I have never tried it, but might be fun!!
@@SumiyoToribe oh thank you it's so beautiful!
Great video, but music is way too loud!
Are you using rice paper? If not, could you post a link where to purchase this paper? Thank you so much! :)
Peace and blessings.Beautiful!. another dimension in watercolor painting. I Have learned another technique today. Can technique be done with a different type of paper? 2/2/18. 2:22 PM
yes, you can use any type of paper. the results are different, but they all come out very interesting!
It's so beautiful.
Thank you for your kind comment and subscription : )
Anytime
its good
Very beautiful pieces! I am a silk painter and I do batik as well. How was this a 'batik style'? Thanks!
I think the effect is somewhat like batik
i love it and i wish to do it on
is it ok to wait it to dry and paint on it ?
How is this batik style?
lovely !! any replacement for Kuzo paper ??
Printmaking paper is great!!
very, very nice! You make it look so easy!!! thanks for sharing.
Really beautiful, Sumiyo. I love the wet into wet technique on the crinkled paper. I have used wet, crinkled washi paper before, but it seems prone to tearing. Is the kozo washi paper different that other paper called washi? May I ask where to purchase the brand that you use? Thank you!
Nancy, Thank you for your comment!!! Kozo washi tears as well. I just carefully handle it. I buy it from www.jerrysartarama.com/yasutomo-hosho-and-kozo-paper
I know this is an older video but I was wondering what kind of paper was the kozo glued to ?? Does that base paper warp at all ?
I glued it on a cheep watercolor paper. If warps, uncurl it by hand and press it under a board.

Thank you
💜 It's so beautiful.
Interesting way of painting, nice picture. Could one use rice paper?
Thanks.
there are so many papers but Kozo paper is made with plant fibers the have a good wet strength and is perfect for this application
can we use any other paper i wont get kozo paper in my country
You can use any paper like print making paper or water color paper. The outcome will be different depending on the thickness and absorbency If the paper. It would be fun to experiment!
There are beautiful, Sumiyo! Did you add additional color after the painting dried the first time? I ask because on your first example, after you trimmed the Kozo Washi, and showed the picture again, the colors looked much more intense.
Also, thank you for *slowing this video down* (although I do understand *slightly* speeding up the repetitive parts). Your work is fantastic, but I don't enjoy trying to watch your some of your videos where the whole thing is sped up to breakneck speed. My eyes can't really focus on the thing that you're demonstrating, and my brain is saying, WTH? But this one was very nice.
Thank you so much for sharing your talent! :)
p.s. I noticed that your videos done at normal speed get *many* more views, and *many* more thumbs up than the ones that are not. :)
I totally agree!! SO much better slowed down. Makes it to where I understand and enjoy it more.
LOVE this one, Sumiyo, please do this format in more of your videos and keep them slower.
It really helps my brain!
You can change the speed on you tube settings. I recently found that out.😁
Sorry this comment is super late, but if i drew something in ink on the base paper, would it be visible through the glue, kozo and paint?
Corey Holt I haven’t tried it, but it should be visible.
nice paintings and tutorial. as a batik artist myself Im always interested in learning new techniques!
Can you use thick paper towel?
no it will disolve
very nice demo, but what's Kozo paper?Glue is normal?can I use latex?or special glue for painting? thanks a lot
Thank you : ) Kozo washi paper is usually used for calligraphy or sumo-e. It's very thin paper. You can actually use different papers for this technique. I like using printmaking paper. I use regular school glue. have fun painting : )
thanks a lot
What type of watercolor paper is it glued to?
I believe some cheep 140 lbs or 90 lbs watercolor paper.
Very Nice! Kozo Washi paper is hand made papers made from verious plant fibers such as Bamboo, Hemp, Wheat and rice. Wa shi meaning Japanese Paper, also used in Origami! I love the blurred look that the paints take when placed on the wetted surface! I am just starting Watercolor and looking for new ideas! Thank You!
+digiphot2 go to utube and put in painting birch trees in watercolor ,,she has some great simple ideas,,good luck ,ive come from oil to watercolor ,,i love the way it flows and completes the picture for you,,this video is excellent too,,
Awesome paintings...
💕
Where can I find Kosovo paper?
I bought mine at www.jerrysartarama.com/yasutomo-hosho-and-kozo-paper
Lovely!
Does it work for any type of watercolor? Please reply, I really need to know this is our topic as an 8th grader in arts and we're required to make one and the deadline is in four days, please tell me
Eccedentesiast I believe any type of watercolor works. Please try some before you demonstrate in class.
@@SumiyoToribe thank you so much for telling me! One more question😅 just in case they don't sell Washi paper, what can I substitute it with?
@@eccedentesiast2328 printmaking paper is good. much thicker than wash, but my initial attempt with this technique was with printmaking paper. you can use watercolor paper as well, even thicker though
@@SumiyoToribe thank you so much! Learning schoolwork at home during the pandemic is quite hard, thank God there are people like you! I hope you're safe😁
Eccedentesiast thank you! Hope you are safe too. Have fun painting!!
