Urban Meyer nearly permanently ruined Trevor Lawrence’s career and Bill Belicheck DID ruin Mac Jones’s career. Although, Wilson and Lance would have prob stayed trash even with good coaching.

Trey Lance getting the best return from his trade is *hilarious.* It's good proof that it's "better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Thanks for actually covering Lance's story properly. I get annoyed when people call him a bust because the fact is he was never given a chance. 4 games that was all, and they weren't really fully games. Shanahan also didn't want him originally and didn't like him. The GM wanted Lance, not him. So once Purdy came around and fit Shanahan system, how he wanted better and was cheap enough to make up for the draft capital loss. Lance was out the door. Any other player would of gotten more time to develop and actually prove their worth. Lance didn't get that and was never given an opportunity to really prove it. He's not a bust. Also, wtf was San Fran thinking when they drafted him on a team that was built to win now. Should of just traded for a starting QB with that capital.
Agree every other qb from the 2021 draft class gets excuses despite playing way more games than lance and still showing nothing but Trey after 4 games played is somehow the biggest bust out of them all
That comment about Fields being the true social media QB was spot on 😂. Dude has a few highlight plays every week but his performance as a whole is subpar. I hope the Steelers can help him right the ship he still has a ton of potential.
Worst part is idk how his confidence got destroyed so bad I get he had a dc as an oc but they won 8 games and 4 of the losses were by 1 score or less then he gets an actual oc and falls apart
Hot Take: I'm a New England Patriots fan and Mac Jones didn't fail in New England because of the Switch to Matt Patricia and Joe Judge as offensive coordinator in 2022. Mac Jones confidence actually died in a game the Patriots won, On December 6th 2021 the PATS beat the Bills 14-10 in a game where Mac Jones threw only 3 times. That was dud to wind gusts of 55 miles per hour happening in Buffalo during that game. Mac lost his confidence when the media made jokes about the Patriots not needing a quarterback. On December 6th 2021 after that win, The Patriots were the Number 1 seed in the AFC. They finished the season going 1-4 and Mac Jones having a 79 Passer rating. That's where he lost his confidence. Then in 2022 and 2023 it was exposed that he had little arm strength and athleticism. Bill and The Patriots did things to hamper Mac Jones, However his lack of arm strength, weak mentality and lack of athleticism is the reason why he became a bust. The Patriots also didn't account for the fact that Mac Jones looked so great at Alabama because he had elite talent around him, Mac Jones struggled when faced with any adversity. The Patriots drafted him at 15 after Patriots guaranteed $163 million in unrestricted free agency in 2021. Belichick put him in a decent situation on day 1. Much better than what Drake Maye is doing currently. I believe Maye will succeed over Mac Jones because he has the Arm strength and athleticism needed to become an elite QB in 2020s NFL.
If they ever win a Super Bowl, they should build a statue of him & Lovie Smith like what the Eagles did with Foles & Pedersen. That game may have saved their franchise
As a Wyoming fan, it gives me immense pleasure to see BYU's latest golden boy QB falter in the pros. We may be so pathetic that they don't even see it as a rivalry in any sport at this point, but that just makes it all the more important to revel in the small victories.
@@kooperuranus1503 What a small world! I lived in Laramie for a few years myself. And personally, I'm just hoping we can have a winning season now that Bohl's retired. The Pokes don't have a good track record of replacing a good coach with another good one lol. I'd also hope the Cougars are good this year, it wouldn't be any fun if we managed to give BYU a scare if they aren't any good.
Bucs fan here, the Trask pick was not a bad one for us, it was a developmental pick, and it turns out he is a backup QB which is not a bust, we also didn't spend any real draft capital on him by comparison. We never really expected him to become a franchise QB, we were excited to see if he was capable after learning under Brady, but most of us knew he was going to be a QB2 at best, which is why we were speculating about other franchise QB options so much the year before Brady retired.
The only problem was that it was a 2nd round pick that could have been used to shore up the defense. Hindsight is 20/20 cause we didn't know Devin White was gonna suck after that super bowl run. If Trask was still available after the 5th round then it would have made sense.
All true, but we didn't know or plan that we would get Baker, and that Baker would actually turn out alright.. Keep Trask as a capable backup, at least for a while.
@@markdouglas9182 We had no clue who our next QB1 was going to be, there was speculation all over the place from Deshawn Watson (shudder), Jimmy Garoppolo, and even Aaron Rodgers.
Honestly this entire draft class is a prime example of the problem with this "Teams live & die by the quarterback" mentality fans and teams alike have now
Aye. Brock Purdy is a pretty good example of this, honestly: He’s not an exceptional talent, though hardly unskilled either. Moderate floor, fairly low ceiling all told… but the 49ers surrounded him with amazing players at basically every position. He didn’t suffer injury after injury, he was well coached (…setting aside questionable tactical decisions in the Super Bowl), he wasn’t getting sacked ten times a game. He had the support needed to develop. I really do wonder what Lance might’ve turned into if he’d not been injured in his first non-Monsoon game as a starter…
This is a philosophy that Teams really need to unlearn. These bottom of the basement teams think drafting a first round QB fixes everything. It doesn't and the fact that everyone hasn't looked at the Browns and learned that is astounding to me.
@@AlonsoRules Yes the QB is a main focal point but one of the problem is just the over-reliance like for example when a team does good who gets most of the credit? The QB & when a team screws up who gets most of the blame? the QB even if it wasn't their faults I'm just saying everyone should get their credit and accountability instead of it all just mostly going to one person
Even now, pundits are still discrediting Purdy... the scouts and front offices seem to have a series of measureables that the ideal QB must have, and if he doesn't have them, then he can't be The Guy. Front offices are going to continue to look for tall guys with cannon arms no matter what
and the Niners gave up three first rounders for him? wtf were they thinking and how many heads if any rolled as a result of it. More ironically is how lucky they were with Mr Irrelevence..the nfl draft,,,,so unpredictable
I was listening to espn radio today. They were talking about Drake Maye and said he only had 2 years of playing in college and didn't start playing football until his senior year of HS. This is not a knock on Maye. I just think it's wild that these guys show anything for 1 or 2 years and everyone starts telling them their the savior. Make it make sense
2013 was pretty bad for most positions; it says a lot that the first overall pick was an offensive tackle. EJ Manuel is such a throwback, I remember whooping the Bills' ass with the All-25 team in Madden that year. Pretty sure the score was 73-24 or something like that
I think this goes to show while talent is definitely a factor in the success or failure of a QB class, it's also heavily dependent on the situations they walk into (coaching + team around them + support from GMs)
It's hard to get truly mad at San Fran for the Trey Lance deal. No one could have predicted Purdy was the real answer, and if Purdy didn't pan out to being the franchise guy after his own playoff injury Lance would probably still have a starting job. The lost draft picks hurt but at the time it was seen as the highest upside option. You just can't predict injury and bad luck, unfortunately.
Nonsense. They traded a fortune for someone who had only been a starter for a single fucking year, instead of someone with proven experience like, Mac jones.
@@elijahechicagobearsboyd5734 Of course the fortune traded sucks, there's really no denying that. Trey was just seen as the easiest person for Shanahan to mold into his ideal QB at the time. Maybe the whole narrative changes if Trey makes good, productive starts in Dallas after a Dak injury or holdout. Maybe this does become the major black eye on the Niners legacy if they fail to win in the next two seasons and have to do a tear-down due to cap constraints. Either way, we still have time for this to change.
@@anxiousorcus5489 No, no matter what happens, the Lance pick was fucking awful. One thing that has to really sting for those teams that took a QB that year is just how damn good the 2021 draft class was. I don't think we'll ever see the QB class of '07 "topped". It's not just the fact that *none* of the 11 QBs drafted developed into even mid-term starters, it's also the amount of talent that was available at other positions in that draft. Four Hall of Famers already from that first round.
@@Harv72bHow does 07 compare to 1996 in your book? Since you’re a Ravens fan, you may have saw the best quarterback in that class: Tony Banks. Other than him, only three other players threw as many as ten passes in an NFL game at all.
In a week 3 update from the 24-25 season, Justin Fields is starting in lieu of an injured Russell Wilson, and he looks good! He’s not perfect at all, but he’s showing his talent as a rushing QB with a more talented o-line.
I will never understand how you give an unproven qb 250 mil. The last 6 sb winners were pat mahomes, Matt stafford, and Tom Brady. And they aren’t even in the top 10 highest paid
In fairness to Kyle Trask, man's only started for two full seasons in his life, and his senior year as a Gator was solid, despite Dan Mullens. And Baker had a solid year last season, arguably better than Tom Brady's last season. I understand why people have given up on him already, but I haven't. Brock Purdy was meant to be a disposable third stringer. Now look at him.
I think the NFL has a value problem. At some point quarterbacks will become so highly rated that depth and quality play will be sacrificed for raw potential from a qb. As a result, many MANY teams are desperately sacrificing top spot selections for 2nd round-3rd round qb prospects. Money is also a factor.
*At some point quarterbacks will become so highly rated that depth and quality play will be sacrificed for raw potential from a qb* Considering the scenario exposed by Tree, I would say it's already happening. Or at least is ingrained in the minds of many. I'll quote a Lions fan from another comment, they said for them to pick a QB to replace Goff, thye picked Penei Sewell and it's paying off well I would say. Goff is not the second coming, but he is average or slightly above and the rest of the team is doing really well
@@otaviofrnazarioYes this is exactly what I see too. You don’t need a superstar quarterback to win. It helps, any NFL team would gladly take one, but if the rest of the team are balanced and well trained, the quarterback position isn’t the be all end all.
@@otaviofrnazario My dad always believed that Jared Goff just needed to get out of LA and start fresh with another team. Detroit has given him that opportunity, and my dad was proven right. Same deal with Baker Mayfield after he was screwed over by Cleveland, Tampa Bay gave Baker the chance he needed.
Hey Tree, Good video as usual. But you did make a minor error. Mac Jones’ OC at Alabama was Steve Sarkisian. Bill O’Brien became OC after Sarkisian left for Texas. Jones also went to the NFL the same year. Good video still. Keep it up.
Out of every QB in this class, Trevor Lawrence is obviously tiers above everyone else (and just think about if he was on a competent team...) but I do believe that Fields is going to bounce back and improve now that he is with the Steelers. As a Ravens fan, I am much more worried about Fields than Russ, and if Fields does improve, he is only 25 years old, so he could be a thorn in the Ravens side for a very long time.
Assuming the 49ers were comfortable rolling the dice like they did, they had to be comfortable knowing they could roll double 1s. Still like the process, even if the result sucked.
Adding to the hilarity is the fact that Jacksonville not only drafted Lawrence from that class, but they also got Jones from the same class on their team now. Amazing how life turns out sometimes lol. And yes, I use Upside, it's not bad getting some money as cashback at places!
Kyle and Lynch probably bow down to Purdy everytime he walks in the locker room. Any other GM and/or coach executes the Trey Lance trade and have it played out the way it did would be ex-communicated from the league for years. It's a miracle how Mr. Irrelevant potentially saved an entire franchise from getting blown up
I'm going to drop this reddit post i saw years ago here... "Prediction time before the season begins: The 2021 QB rookie class will be the greatest of all time. Here are my ballpark estimates for the careers of the top five QBs. Trevor Lawrence: 1-2 MVPs, will accumulate really good numbers, but I don't know about him getting to a Super Bowl. Think of an Andrew Luck career if Luck never got injured. Zach Wilson: Really solid franchise quarterback for years to come. He'll keep the Jets relevant. I'll say 1 MVP and 1 Super Bowl appearance if Saleh can keep them going in the right direction. Comparable career to Matt Ryan. Trey Lance: Will have the best career of the top 5 QBs. At least 2-3 MVPs, and I'll say 3+ Super Bowl appearances with 2 rings. Comparable to 2001-2010 Tom Brady. Justin Fields: Will be the Bears first true franchise QB. 1-2 MVPs, and I think he'll win the Bears a Super Bowl. Similar career to Aaron Rodgers. Mac Jones: If Belichick stays for the long run, which I think he will, I think he takes OROY, 1 MVP and 2 Super Bowl wins. Won't have the best stats but Belichick will build him up with his exceptional schemes. Similar career to Troy Aikman. At least three of these guys will be in Canton one day. Now go ahead and laugh at me and we'll all check back here in 20 years." WOW, JUST WOW 😂
John Lynch should count his lucky stars his late round draft picks panned out (See Kittle, Warner, and Purdy). Between Lance and Solomon Thomas any other GM woulda got fired for those swing and a miss first round selections.
The Trey Lance fiasco on a regular team would cost the entire front office to be sack and start a team rebuilding that will last years. The fact that the 49ers picked up Brock Purdy for cheap and he ended up being the team's golden nugget is mind-blowing.
The 2021 draft is actually shaping up excellent aside from the QBs. It's produced Micah Parsons, JaMarr Chase, Penei Sewell, and Patrick Surtain. All among the best at their positions. Others like Devonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Najee Harris, and Greg Rousseau have been quality starters.
Ryan Leaf 🤝JaMarcus Russell🤝Zach Wilson There's plenty of high drafted QBs that don't meet expectations but these are the guys where I wonder "How did you ever end up on an NFL field in the first place?" All had notoriously bad attitudes and maturity issues on top of it.
Have you seen his attitude? He’s fine with remaining at the level he is. He has enough talent to be good, but he puts the minimum amount of effort to maintain being a middle of the pack qb. He will never be in the mvp discussion.
Man, as a Bears fan I always felt bad for Fields. That guy was a really dedicated player and an extremely good athlete who had an amazing ceiling. But the Bears, being the Bears, instituted a system where his weaknesses were exaggerated and his strengths mostly hidden. Nagy and Getsy had no idea what to do with him. And you could see in his last few games with Chicago he did step up and had great flashes, but a first round pick QB is a hard thing to pass up and Fields just couldn’t make the cut.

So honored for my team to be a part of this glorious QB class...I'm dying inside
I feel like the class of 2021 is a pretty big indicator that coaching really DOES matter to a QBs development. Urban Meyer nearly permanently ruined Trevor Lawrence’s career and Bill Belicheck DID ruin Mac Jones’s career. Although, Wilson and Lance would have prob stayed trash even with good coaching.
BB ruined Jones?? STFU plz with that horseshit.... BB gave the guy a top 5 defense and run game that avg over 125 ypg his rookie year and he couldn't even progress. Wanna blame coach pencil? Bcuz he's a DC right? Wrong. He was Brady's OC (assistant) in the first SB run and Zappe didn't have issues winning games with the DC as OC. Sounds like you were one of the brain dead fans who wanted Jones and didn't like what you got in return bcuz he's JAG. Learn football....
The fact that SF traded 3 firsts to get Lance and are still a SB contender without him is pretty crazy
It’s really scary to think. Had they stayed put and drafted someone like Devonta Smith or Micah Parsons I think they would have another ring.

Trey Lance getting the best return from his trade is *hilarious.*
It's good proof that it's "better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Agree every other qb from the 2021 draft class gets excuses despite playing way more games than lance and still showing nothing but Trey after 4 games played is somehow the biggest bust out of them all
And then Lance throws 5 ints

It’s crazy how Mac jones is considered the second best quarterback of this class. Just shows how bad this quarterback class really was.
Mac Jones is gonna be in the league a long time. Hes not good but man he can take a beating and thats what makes a great backup and good tv.
And even then, that’s largely on his first year only
As a Bama fan, I was rooting for Mac to do well. I've also been a long-time Patriots fan and even I knew Mac wouldn't be a fit.
@@voiceofreason2674Ya, he's not terrible for a backup.
Worst part is idk how his confidence got destroyed so bad I get he had a dc as an oc but they won 8 games and 4 of the losses were by 1 score or less then he gets an actual oc and falls apart
The 2020 draft class is what the 2021 draft class was supposed to be
Hot Take: I'm a New England Patriots fan and Mac Jones didn't fail in New England because of the Switch to Matt Patricia and Joe Judge as offensive coordinator in 2022.
Davis Mills had the most impact out of all these players
He kept Houston out of the first overall pick
If they ever win a Super Bowl, they should build a statue of him & Lovie Smith like what the Eagles did with Foles & Pedersen. That game may have saved their franchise
As a Wyoming fan, it gives me immense pleasure to see BYU's latest golden boy QB falter in the pros. We may be so pathetic that they don't even see it as a rivalry in any sport at this point, but that just makes it all the more important to revel in the small victories.
😂 as BYU fan that grew up in Laramie in the 90s. Fun to see this. Looking forward to this seasons game. Hope the Pokes win the MWC.
The QB is absolutely everything
@@AlonsoRules Yes the QB is a main focal point but one of the problem is just the over-reliance like for example when a team does good who gets most of the credit? The QB & when a team screws up who gets most of the blame? the QB even if it wasn't their faults
I'm just saying everyone should get their credit and accountability instead of it all just mostly going to one person
@@Rayen015the problem is this qb is different, our team needs a qb
After Purdy, smart teams will value football IQ over arm strength. You can train aim and power, but almost never instinct
lol yeah right...smart teams will....but most will just keep doing what they're doing and so it goes
Even now, pundits are still discrediting Purdy... the scouts and front offices seem to have a series of measureables that the ideal QB must have, and if he doesn't have them, then he can't be The Guy. Front offices are going to continue to look for tall guys with cannon arms no matter what
I vividly recall the hype surrounding all these QBs. Trey Lance should have never went that high with only one "season" of tape.
and the Niners gave up three first rounders for him? wtf were they thinking and how many heads if any rolled as a result of it.
Pretty sure the score was 73-24 or something like that
I’d say Geno’s regressed to the mean. One good year in Seattle, he’ll probably be gone after this season.
I like the Bears. 2000 and 2013 can be bad classes all they want but we get HOF Brian Urlacher and x3 pro bowler RG Kyle Long
It says even more that said offensive tackle wasn't even the best player taken by the team that drafted him
I think this goes to show while talent is definitely a factor in the success or failure of a QB class, it's also heavily dependent on the situations they walk into (coaching + team around them + support from GMs)
That’s rings the question. Are some of these guys busts because they suck or is it because they went to a shit team 🤷🏾♂️

I understand why people have given up on him already, but I haven't. Brock Purdy was meant to be a disposable third stringer. Now look at him.
Facts.
Quarterbacks are important obviously, but some of these teams could be setting some of their picks up to fail.
*At some point quarterbacks will become so highly rated that depth and quality play will be sacrificed for raw potential from a qb*
Considering the scenario exposed by Tree, I would say it's already happening.
