  • Video tutorial on knitting the blanket with free pattern on the Caron(R) Big CakesTM yarn. I have changed up the edges slightly to make a less wider blanket (cast on 178 st) as mentioned in video. If you follow my pattern or the label pattern, you will need 3 skeins of the 10.5 oz (300 g) Caron Big Cakes yarn and US size 9 (5.5 mm) 29 or 36 inch circular needles.

    this is my very first knit project! such a beautiful pattern 🥰 typing notes here for my reference later:
    - cast on 178
    - garter stitch 5 rows for starting border
    - row 1: slip 1 purl-wise, kfb, k5, *(ssk, k2tog, k5, kfb2, k5), ssk, k2tog, k5, kfb, k1.
    - row 2: slip 1 purl-wise, purl the rest
    - repeat rows 1-2 until desired length
    - garter stitch 5 rows for end border
    I can’t wait to finish my blanket! 🤩

    • @KnittycatsKnits

      Thanks, Melanie! And good question. Actually, I don't think it matters with this striping yarn. I didnt particularly look at gauge and the overall look of the striping was still pretty good. Saw similar results when I used this yarn (and similar stitch) to knit a poncho. I think the color changes between major color sections of the yarn are subtle and so it works well, regardless of gauge. Hope this helos. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊

    Excellent video! Your instructions are very clear. I love how you explain and show each type of stitch and then give the name of the stitch. You absolutely took the mystery out of knitting a chevron for me. Following the instructions included in the label on the Caron Cake was so confusing and frustrating. I must have undone my work at least a half dozen times until I found your video. Your cast on of 178 stitches was the difference maker-Caron’s 198-stitch cast-on and subsequent instructions may have contained an error? I contacted the company to report it. Thank you for a wonderful video.

      Hi, I just realized that I missed responding to your question! Thanks so much for watching my videos and your lovely feedback!
      To get the chain edge, you would knit it exactly as you described it. The last stitch on Row is just a knit and the last stitch on Row 2 would be just a regular purl st. Also, about knitting with double-pointed needles (instead of circ needles), check out my video at ua-cam.com/video/rLG4r-Sw1qk/v-deo.html. This one actually shows how to transfer from circ to DPNs and hopefully will be helpful. Part 1 of my socks video should also help ( ua-cam.com/video/WY3-LB364-Q/v-deo.html). Best wishes😊

      Actually, I ended up doing a few rows of plain knit at the end (to get a matching border at both ends) and then did a regular bind off. If I recall, that edge also had a bit of scalloping (maybe not quite as pointy as cast on edge). I gifted the blanket a while ago so don't have it with me to check. Many kind greetings from France : Marie !

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  6 років тому +2

      Marie Merci. Happy you liked it. In the version I have shown in the video, the stitch is actually a multiple of 16 stitches + 18 stitches (16 on one side and 2 on the other). The difference in first 16 st and the rest of the 16 st repeat is that, you slip first st, then do kfb only 1 time (as shown in the video), then k5, ssk, k2tog, k5. After the first 16 st, you can do 16-st repeat of kfb in 2 st, then k5, ssk, k2tog, k5 (adds up to 16 st). Do this until last 2 st, then kfb in 1 st and knit last st. Hope this helps. Pattern will look beautiful as a sweater. Best wishes et bonne chance😊

    Hello! Thanks so much for this video. I'm looking forward to starting this project. One question: how did you decide where in the colorway to begin the pattern? When you did the cast on, did you start at the beginning of the skein, regardless of what color it was? Or did you pull out the yarn and plan on starting with a certain color? Hope my question makes sense!

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  5 років тому

      Great question, Nitya! For this blanket, I actually just cast on from the start of tha skein. Luckily worked out for me as it gave me enough for a nice border. However, would suggest unravelling skein and start casting on at that start of one of the colors within your skein. And whdn joining a new skein, be sure to join at the right color point in the next skein. Please check out my update vidro of this blanket, which has more information. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have more questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes for the project!😊

    Hello, thank you for this very clear video. I have started knitting up a swatch with this pattern and I'm finding it a lot of fun.
    I have a couple of questions :
    1) my border on both ends look different. One end is a slip stitch border as I can see in your video. But the other end is more of a alternate knit-purl stitch border. Is that expected? I'm slipping the first stitch in every row. And knitting last stitch on the right side and purling the last stitch on the wrong side. Am I missing something?
    2) in this video and others you talk about "blocking" a pattern. What does that mean?
    Thank you :)

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Juliet, so glad to hear your are typing this pattern and liking it. Regarding your questions:
      1) For the border, when you on the first row of the pattern, keep the yarn in the back when slipping the first stitch (just like I show in the video) and for the last stitch, do a regular knit stitch. In the purl row, when slipping the first stitch, keep the yarn in front of the stitch when you slip it (rather than in the back). That should help give you a neat slipped stitch edge; for the last stitch on this row, just do a regular purl. I tried this just now on a small swatch to check and the border comes out just like it is in the blanket shown in the video. One other option to consider is that in the first row, for the last stitch, you can knit the stitch through the back loop (which means just doing a regular knit but instead of inserting the needle in the front loop of the stitch, you would insert it in the back loop and knit it). This should also give a clean edge (again, for next all purl row, when slipping the first stitch, keep the yarn in the front of the needle). Hope this helps.
      2) Regarding blocking, this is a procedure you do to flatten out a knitted piece. In some patterns (like lace knitting or even some non-lace patterns), the fabric created after knitting is scrunched up or curled up. So to flatten it out, we block the fabric. You can do wet blocking, which is rinsing out the finished product with a fabric-friendly wash and then pinning it onto a flat surface to dry (I use the top of my ironing board; can also use a blanket). Another way is to pin to a flat surface and then steaming it over the top using the steam setting of the iron, keeping the iron an inch or so above the fabric and never touching the iron to the fabric! That helps moisten the fabric and flatten it out. For lace patterns or even larger projects like sweaters, blocking is needed to get a proper final shape. For other projects, like this blanket, if the fabric is in shape and lays flat for the most part, then blocking is not necessary (although some purists may still block the work). I have not done a video on blocking specifically (something for me to consider putting out in the future). Hope this helps, but reach out if you have more questions. Best wishes!

    This is such a lovely pattern. Please could you help me as to how many stitches to cast on for a small baby blanket? Thank you

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  2 роки тому

      Thank you! The pattern variation I've shown is a multiple of 16 st + 18 sts. So to knit a small baby blanket, the number of sts will depend on the width that you desire for the blanket and the yarn/needles you select. The best way is to make small swatch with that yarn by casting on a minimum number of required sts (16 + 18=34) and doing the pattern for a few rows. Then measure the width. Say it measures to about 6 inches, then you know that if you want a blanket that is 2 feet (24 inches) in width, then do a bit of math: if you get 6 inches width with 34 sts, then for 24 inches, you will need: 24 x 34 then divided by 6, which is 136. But note that your stitches need to be a multiple of 16 + 18. The closet multiple of 16 that is less than 136 is 128 (which is 16 x 8). So you can go with 128 + 18 = 146 sts (will slightly wider than 24 inches). Or could go one less and cast on 130 sts (which is 16 x 7 = 112 + 18 = 130). This will slightly smaller than 24 in. Hope this helps and best wishes for your project😀

    I am quite new at knitting and want to do the exact pattern on the package. Could you please write out in complete row 1 without all the asterisks ( this is where I am getting confused). Secondly, when i am knitting is it row 1 then row 2 , row 1 then row 2 etc.? Thank you in advance

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  4 роки тому

      Hi Tracy, just getting caught up on my UA-cam comments and realized I missed answering your question. Regarding patterns with asterisks in the row, that just means that you repeat the stitches mentioned within the asterisks until you reach the end of the row (or in some cases, pattern will specify to repeat between the asterisks until a certain number of stitches remain, and then they will describe how to knit those remaining stitches). For my variation of this blanket pattern, I cast on 178 sts and the pattern is a 2-row repeat as shown in the video (after you knit a garter stitch border at the start, which is just all knit for about 10-12 rows). For Row 1: slip 1 stitches, then KFB in next stitch (which is knit in the front and back of the same stitch), then knit 5 stitches (which is K5), then start the pattern repeat, which is as follows: SSK (which is slip, slip, knit), then K2tog (which is knit 2 stitches together), then K5, then KFB twice (so knit front & back in next 2 stitches), then K5. Now you continue this same pattern repeat (SSK, K2tog, K5, KFB, K5) until you come to the last 11 stitches, then do a SSK, K2tog, K5, KFB. That is the end of Row 1. Then turn your work and do Row 2 as follows: slip first stitch and then purl all the remaining stitches. Hope this helps and you get to try this wonderful project! Thanks for watching and best wishes (:

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  5 років тому

      +Jonnie Ann Brinkman Hi Jonnie, if you follow the label pattern exactly, it is a repeat of 16 stitches (excluding the first 18 stitches and last 4 sts). So to widen it, you could add in multiples of 16 sts. The label pattern calls for 198 sts to be cast. So, instead you could cast 214 (198 + 16) or 230 (198 + 32). Or more as long as you are adding a multiple of 16 sts. Then the label pattern should work. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and happy knitting😊

    • @KnittycatsKnits

      Hi Morgan, good question. I think it depends on the project and the width/size of what you are knitting. If the width is small, say like a scarf, then I think the stripping may work well and not change mid-row. For this blanket, I think it did change mid-row, but all in all, the look was still quite good and it didn't look too jarring. I would say give it a try and see how it turns out. I am sure it will look very pretty and your granddaughter will absolutely love it. Thanks for watching and best wishes for the project!

I have since donated this blanket but looking at the update video just now, it looks like the stripes actually came out nice and even.

      Thanks, Nina😊 For this blanket, as shown in video, you need to cast on a multiple of 16 stitches and then add 18 stitches to that. For example, 16 x 11=176, then add 18, which equals 194 stitches. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes🤗

    I want to make a wide afghan would 198 stitches make it wider? Please help thanks enjoy your tutorial

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  3 роки тому

      Hi Patricia, glad you enjoyed the tutorial and are going to try it. If you wish to knit it using the variation I showed in my video, then you would need a multiple of 16 sts + 18. So, would recommend 194 sts (which is 16 x 11 = 176 + 18 = 194). If you are not sure, you can always make a small swatch with just 16 + 18 = 34 sts and try out the pattern. Then measure the width and can use that to calculate the number of stitches you need for the wide afghan. For instance, if your small swatch of just 34 stitches measures say 6 inches and you wish to make the afghan about 36 inches wide, then you would need (36 x 34), then divide by 6 = 204. But then be sure that whatever total stitches you end up with, subtract 18 from them and then whatever remains must be divisible by 16. So in this case, it doesn't quite work with 204 but you can adjust it slightly up or down (eg, 204 - 18 = 186, which when divided by 16 = 11.6. So rounding this down to 11, lets say you can then cast on as follows: 16 x 11 = 176 and then add on 18 sts = 194 sts. This is just one example (and sorry, I know its a bit of math for figuring out gauge, but in this case it is not as important since it is an afghan). But the main point is that for the stitch to work (as shown in the video) it must be a multiple of 16 + 18 sts. If you then choose to add an extra border on either end, can add on those stitches to the total. Hope this helps but let me know if you have more questions. Best wishes for the project!

    I have a question. Do you remember the finished size of the “reduced” afghan you made? I also want a smaller afghan but don’t want to do the row ends as you did. So if I knit three stitches on each end every row would/how I alter the 178 cast on stitches? Thank you in advance.

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Nadine, my blanket was 36 in wide x 48 in long (see a separate video I had posted on my blanket update, which I made after I finished it; ua-cam.com/video/nc7fUKs4eW4/v-deo.html). You can certainly add 3 sts and knit them on either end to create a garter st border. But as long as your stitch count in between those 3 st is a multiple of 16 + 18 sts, then the pattern will work. Also, if putting a border, no need to slip the first st (as shown in video). Instead, just knit that first st. So if you decide to make a smaller blanket and it comes out that you need 130 sts (16 times 7 + 18 = 130), then you will add on 6 sts to that (to account for 3 sts on either end for border). So total will be 136 sts. To go even smaller, decrease that initial 130 sts by 16 each time (so 114, 98, etc). It will still fit formula of multiple of 16 + 18. Then add on the border sts. A 3-st border on each side may be a bit thin, so could add 5 sts on each side (but that's your choice). Also, will help to add stitch markers after you knit the border sts on one end and before you knit them on the other end. That way you know where border sts start and end. Hope this helps 😀

      Hi Kayla, so sorry to hear that your order got cancelled. For this project, I think you could any worsted weight (medium weight: 4) yarn. Examples of such yarns are the Impeccable(TM) Yarn by Loops and Threads (www.michaels.com/impeccable-yarn-by-loops-and-threads-ombre/M10108936.html?dwvar_M10108936_size=3.5%20oz&dwvar_M10108936_color=Fresh%20Lilac), the Caron yarns (www.michaels.com/caron-one-pound-yarn/10299753.html?cm_mmc=PLASearch-_-google-_-MICH_Shopping_US_N_Knitting+%26+Crochet_N_Smart_N_N-_-&Kenshoo_ida=&kpid=go_cmp-9982987191_adg-102401875802_ad-433378147608_pla-341882797342_dev-c_ext-_prd-10299753&gclid=CjwKCAjwtqj2BRBYEiwAqfzurzI7NxI-im-ezzXhvPiRIo3fj-EFd6Go63DHwWqs_5Xzkik-TWhTMBoC5XcQAvD_BwE), or something similar. You can try knitting a small swatch (I provide the stitch count for my variation of the pattern in the video). You can then know how many stitches to cast per the width of the swatch and the desired width of your blanket. Hope this helps but let me know if you have other questions. @@sluggerklh I think it should give you the stripe effect. I used a total of 3 balls of the yarn (each was 10.5 oz or 300 g). So, if you were to use the Impeccable yarn (from my first reply), I think it comes in 3.5 oz skeins, so may need about 8-9 of those. You could also try the Red Heart striping yarn (link: www.michaels.com/red-heart-super-saver-yarn-prints-multi-flecks/10480683.html?cm_mmc=PLASearch-_-google-_-MICH_Shopping_US_N_Knitting+%26+Crochet_N_Smart_N_N-_-&Kenshoo_ida=&kpid=go_cmp-9982987191_adg-102401875802_ad-433378147608_pla-341882797342_dev-c_ext-_prd-10480683&gclid=CjwKCAjwtqj2BRBYEiwAqfzur8bGGIZ6ECRF_RugbgRSPbl9PBpQxuNMGVYonOUTrhCEiMOSVJ_u1xoCCGkQAvD_BwE), which comes in 5.5 oz skeins, so may need about 6-7 skeins of that. May be better to have an extra skein just in case; can always use it later to knit a hat or something, if you have extra (: Also, if you have not seen it yet, please also see my update video on this blanket (ua-cam.com/video/nc7fUKs4eW4/v-deo.html), where I provide additional details and tips I learned while knitting this blanket.

    Can I ask you something. If I increase every 10 stiches, I end up with a bigger scarf. It seems that I didn't get your pattern well. What did I do wrong?

    • @KnittycatsKnits
      @KnittycatsKnits  2 роки тому

      Hi Peony, the pattern is a multiple of 16 sts + 18 sts. So if you need to increase it, it needs to be by at least 16 sts. So your overall stitch count should be a multiple of 16 sts + 18 sts. So the minimum number of sts to cast would be 34 (16 +18). For a wider scarf, can cast on 50 (but would use thinner yarn, or else it will be a very wide scarf). Hope this helps😊

    I am trying to knit a baby blanket with the chevron pattern but at the end of the row, my pattern does not end with the two stitches that are supposed to be the same as the first two of the row. I cast on a total of 114 stitches making sure to add the two extra. So it was 112 sts which is a multiple of 14 according to instructions plus the two extra. I end up with just part of the repeat before the last two stitches. I am very puzzled and frustrated. Any help you could give me would be very appreciated.

    • @KnittycatsKnits

      Hi Ruth, thanks for messaging and sorry you are having trouble with this. Actually, the video shows my variation of Caron's website pattern and for my variation, the stitch count actually is a multiple of 16 sts + 18 sts (so not sure why you have noted a different multiple in your comment). That said, actually 114 sts matches the stitch count needed per my video (16 x 6 = 96 sts + 18 sts = 114 sts). So your total of 114 sts should work fine with the pattern if you follow exactly how shown in the video. I would suggest starting again, triple count your stitches after you cast them to be sure you have 114 sts and then do the first row of the pattern. At the end, count your sts again (before starting the second row). You should still have 114 sts (if you followed the pattern correctly, as shown in video). Hope this helps. Hang in there; once you get it, it will feel so easy and your baby blankie will be ready in no time😊

      @@KnittycatsKnits I am sorry for not clarifying better what pattern I was trying to work. It is a chevron baby blanket pattern tutorial with stockinette pattern (right side) using 30 stitches-28 plus 2. Instructions were to always have a multiple of 14 plus two. So I have 112 stitches plus 2 and so when I got to the end of my row, I still had two too many stitches before doing knit 1/and then into back, and then just knit. Something is missing in the instructions because the stitches that I have are a multiple of 14 plus the two for each end. I am so appreciative of your quick reply but hopefully my explanation makes more sense now. Any idea what I am missing? Thank you again.

      Hi Chrystyna, that's a good questions. I think the overall shape of the chevrons have a similar look with knitting vs crochet but hard for me to say which would be faster (perhaps crochet may be a bit faster since each row of crochet will have a greater height than each row of knitting, depending on the type of crochet stitch used in the chevron pattern). I have not knit a blanket with the crochet version of this (have only knit a scarf) but perhaps will have to try that in the future. Thanks for watching my video and best wishes! (:
