"How could ya look at me as if I was just one of your deals" The whole making movies record is completely underrated. Every song a masterpiece every line a poets dream. It is one of the best records ever made.
Fell out with my guitar 2 years ago, it has been staring at me every night, came across your vid and decided to ask its forgiveness. Love your work man, you are a legend. Thank you
After four weeks of playing the intro I'm now ready to move on to the main verses - never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I could play this song a big thankyou Justin from Richard in Australia.
Justin, I put my guitar down for about 15 years. I started watching guitar lessons on UA-cam and discovered you. I love your teaching style, which is one of the best I’ve found. I also appreciate the variety of songs, many of which I am compelled to learn. I’m just toughing up my fingers again and once I do I’m yours. Love what you do. Thank you.
Just wanted to say that this was the first fingerstyle song I learned start to finish, and the first song I ever learned to sing while playing, thanks to your video. Took me a couple of months to get it down before I was ready to play it and sing it for my girlfriend, but I doubt I could have done it without your lesson! Can't thank you enough!
Justin is an amazing guitar player and a great teacher. I'm also amazed at his patience to break down every note of a song so others can follow along. I've learned to play dozens of songs from watching his videos over the years and I'm grateful, although I must admit I still suck at playing it's given me hours of personal enjoyment. :)
Been a year since I played guitar thanks to a bad string of accidents (gas bottle explosion that left me in a coma, then chopped off the end of my right middle finger, then accidentally planted a knife in the thumb of my left hand, both necessitating a lot of stitches. I've been struggling to find a good song to get back into it, till I found this little gem!! Cheers Justin!!! Love your enthusiasm - keep sharing it!!!!
When you learn a song like this, you just want to get straight down to the pub to show off! although this song has been big part of my life, its only now I have started to learn it, Thank you for taking the time to record, May the light of Knopfler shine down upon you,
I've been playing for thirty years and I had trouble picking this one up. But after a couple weeks of practice, it clicked. Now I can't stop playing it, to the point where my kids tell me to play something else. Such a lovely song. Thanks, Justin!
Among all the video tutorial of youtube, you're the best one. Always smiling, kind, explaining the lessons clearly, and of course with a great sound. Keep doing this! We appreciate it!
12:15 gives me chills. that smile looks like JSC has just recalled "singing up to girl like that":) i did struggle on that funny strumming, but have been practicing cause the way it sounds makes it worth the effort. hope to see more of ya, cheers from Poland
+Tanuj Singh its simple finger memory also he has a cappo, the cappo pushes the scale up,£1.50 cheap his tuning you can do on a phone ,good luck the world need more music, but heres my real thing make your own music who the hell wants to be a human photocopier.
+albert fish Yeah it's quite weird I remember I once broke a string when trying to tune to DADGAD so now I'm quite hesitant to tune to alternate tunings
+Tanuj Singh You broke a string? May I please ask how how did you manage to do that? The standard tuning is EADGBE. So from E-D you are tuning down, from A-G you are tuning down, from D-D you aint even gonna touch that knob, from G-G you aint even gonna touch that knob B-B you aint even gonna touch that knob and from E-D again fucking tune down. So how did you break a string while you tune down. Or is it that you were genius enough to not tune down but tune all the up to get this? OH! gawddddddddd
+Tanuj Singh Firstly, the tuning is D-G-D-G-B-D. This is a rare thing Tanuj because the 6th string is very hardy and tuning up from D back to E for which it is made is really surprising. In fact tuning from D to E is a very common thing. You always have to cross D to reach E. hahahah There are a lot of compositions where the player has to tune the 6th string down to D at the end of a bar or end of song. that sound when you strike 6th E and immediately tune down to D is a part of the composition. So my point is It is really a rare thing that the 6th string broke. Where as 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings often break.
I'm in my late 60s, and being playing guitar professionally for many years. I thought I was beyond needing online tuition, but this has proved me wrong! I've been struggling to work out the way to play R & J for years, but Justin has made it so easy. I now have no problem with the open tuning or left hand fingering, but I AM a pick user and fingerstyle is not one of my strong points. But I'm practising this now until I perfect it! Thanks Justin!!!
Yep, me too. I've been wanting to learn this correctly for 15 years. Just saw this tonight and learn it the right way now. Such a great song. Lots of work ahead, that's okay though, it's a labor of love.
That lesson was so good. The performance at the end was great as well and really shows your appreciation for Mark Knoppler’s genius. Very well done Justin. You’re a great resource for all of us basement guitar players.
Justin, you've really done me a good turn. I never would have figured it out myself because, regarding open tunings, I'm a beginner (note thats in OPEN tunings. 45 yr standard tuning vet here lol). But after spending only a few hours, I now have this jaw dropping tune in my repetoire. I sing exactly like Mark, although its only one of two voices I have. The other one I discovered serving on my church choir, which I still do. In fact, my church family will be the first to hear me play this. I owe you big time bro!
It's crazy that this guy has earned for this specific lesson only whatever youtubers earn for a million and a half views. This is genuinely gold. Top 3 humans to ever step on this planet, probably half my sexual encounters have been thanks to him. I am starting to work full-time now and I am going to contribute to you 6 years after I started, so thankful!!
Wow. I started playing the guitar 33 yrs ago this coming Christmas. I listened to this song as well as a bunch of other Dire Straits in preparation. Thanks to your excellent lesson I'm finally learning this beauty. Great job. Thanks a bunch, Brother!
the best tutorial for the song you are the best I never believed I could play this and you were right it takes a lot of practice and I do enjoy it and loved it a lot its my favorite ever song thanks a million and best wishes from Egypt
Great. When I tried it first I didn´t know that it´s tuned different. For all who have problems with it, watch at minute 01:00 and listen how to tune. greats from Hamburg germany
Justin has to be best teacher on the net. Very clear instructions and a huge amount of patience in getting it sooo right! Thank you Justin from Dublin Ireland!
Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic lesson! I agree with you: one of most beautiful guitar songs ever recorded and Mark Knopfler is really a genius!
Wow, I totally forgot about you Justin. I saw you playing in the video and then I realized I started playing my first songs on guitar with your movies 5/6 years ago. A lot happened since then... Had greaaaat nights with gigs. Thank you guy! It's like meeting an old friend! Greetings from Belgium. Keep going!
Great lesson Justin. I'm gonna practice the s**t out of this. I loved this song since the first time I heard it. You're right it is beautiful and you've explained it wonderfully. Thank you Sir.
Absolutely love this lesson. Clear, easy to understand, hard as hell to play for normal people but you broke it down so well! Thanks Justin. In your performance, my only wish is that you finished it out 🙂. My favorite part of this song is the sense of yearning in the final, “you and me babe, how ‘bout it” and then the masterful overlay of the strat. Just an excellent lesson.
youd think the first finger plucking the first string woud be a toungue twister but you smashed it.....pure genius justin....a good teacher.Well done for not plucking it up :)
Great work on this tutorial mate. 37 and never played but bought a guitar to play this song and I'm really doing well thanks to you..you're a great teacher and the breakdown on the video is perfect for me. Thought I'd give credit where it's due. Thanks again.
Justin, Thanks for all you do. My guitar was something to hang my cloths on to dry. That was till i started watching your videos. Your amazing patience and Love of the instrument has me playing at least an hour a day. And i am actually getting somewhere and enjoying it. Keep it up and know we are indeed learning from you.
Hey, is there any possibility to get a pure instrumental version of this song played by you? We like to sing it on our wedding - but I can't find any really beautiful guitar cover. And I didn't find anybody else playing it as perfect as you! You can reach via mail to sl (at) sebastian (minus) lapke (dot) de ... even if it's to tell me that you can't.
Hey James Carruthers , unfortunately, it's simply too late now. Because Justin didn't answer my request, we had to take a less beautiful version and our singer is already practicing with the other one. So sad. :/
***** no efence mate, start again, music isn't all about conditioning the mind and body. Practice the the thing that you love the must. That way you make sure music comes from the hart. Good luck Mate
This video is the best I faund in the web about (Romeo And Juliet - from Dire Straits), Is incredible easy the way this guy lead you trough the song!! Thank's! Keep going!!
I just watched Mark Knopfler playing this on a bbc video about five times trying to play it. I figured it was in open tuning since my playing sounded horrible. Thanks for the lesson my man!
Hi Justin! You really are a huge teacher.. most of the talented musicians I know-and you surely are talented- they don't have the right vibe to share their playn stuff.. BIG UPS!!
This was the song that convinced me to pick up a guitar and make a proper effort to learn (age 38). Still early days, but this is what I'm aiming at...Would be great to come back in a few years, and see whether I can finally play this!
I watched the Mark Knoffler concerts and had a great view of his hands. I Really appreciate the help with the tuning, I couldn't 'ear' it, but 2 notes short. The tuning and Capo-ing made perfect sense!! You know the saying; it means nothing until you give it away! You're Rich and, Thanks a Bunch!. I had it in 5 minutes! Great Tune!
great lesson justin! this one was a doozy but i learned it in a few hours with your video and looking at the tab. i have one recommendation to anyone having trouble with this one. the hardest part for me was the transition between the first and second chord positions. i found that just strumming down once instead of strumming down and up before you get to the second chord position helped a lot. it's kind of a ghost note(chord) anyways and you will get it eventually. this also applies for anytime theres strumming in the main lick. hope that makes sense and helps someone!!
Thanks Justin. Romeo and Juliet is one of my top ten favorites and you explained (open G) what I haven't been able to make it work. Got to go and practice.
Clear and good lesson, you are good teacher, thanks. Clair et efficace leçon. T'es simplement pratique et efficace pour enseigner ce merveilleux chef d’œuvre d Mark Knophler.
This will be the third Video from Justin that has pushed me further than I thought I could play. Two weeks of frustration and tonight I got it! Few more weeks to go... Thanks Justin!!! P.s Sure I spotted him in Ealing the other day.
Hey Justin, great lesson--love this song! About the chords; (somebody may have already said this but I don't have time for ALL the comments) as a banjo player who spends alot of time in open G, I cansay the second chord in the verse is a 6th (or reletive minor to the root in this case Dminor), but as your top string isn't played, youre fingering a partial chord. And the other 'strange' one is good old Gminor moving to a quick Aminor before going back to F. Hope that may help someone.
Thank you so much for this....! Knopfler truly is a genius, but you're pretty incredible yourself.....! That guitar has a wonderful and unique tone....
It's been six months since I started the guitar you thanks Justin another twenty years and we can play together :) We can always dream!!! big interpretation...
A nice lesson, well paced and the close ups are very helpful. I'd always played this in normal tuning but with dropped G and capo it gets the authentic feel.
Thank you so much. Have you considered supporting Justin and his mission of ‘teaching the world to play’? If you are able, every donation enables him to make more lessons and content free to all. www.justinguitar.com/donate 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher
Wonderful lesson Justin. I met Mark at 16. I was lucky enough to hear him rehearse Telegraph Road. Just him and me in the room. A treasured memory. Thanks again. Pop by and have a listen to my efforts. Hope you will like! Kind regards Lee Mitchell (:-)
Justin - thanks you pal - this is a complicated piece that most of us gave up on years ago - now i can play it thanks to your superb video and teaching - you have a rare talent my friend - I'm stuck out here in the Kuwait desert on a rig - can't wait to get home and dig out my Dobro - cheers S.P.
You are an incredible musician and teacher. So many thank yous are way overdue! I agree a most beautiful guitar piece from one of the greatest. Thank you!
Thank you so much Justin...for this and the others. I think the repeated theme by the comments left is that you have rejuvinated our love to play! Thank you so much for that!!!
Muchas gracias Justin por enseñar algo tan bello que hace feliz a las personas y les hace soñar. Thank you very much Justin for teaching something so beautiful that makes people happy and makes them dream.
wow justin has some nice taste.every time h posts a song lesson i stop watching 1 minute in and go listen to the song 5 times for half an hour lol. then i come back and listen to justin play for half an hour then finally go and learn it lol.
Justin, you have my respect. This may look easy to many but it is assuredly NOT for the beginning player. I apreciate the way you do not oversimplify these patterns for someone who is just not ready for it. Instead, you go right in and start breaking it all down in a quick enough manner that it doesn't bore the advanced player. I'm 62 years old and I've been playing the guitar since I was seven. By the time I had watched your video the second time through, I had this song nailed because of the manner in which you explain it. Thank you very much.
been trying every day before work and after work 3 days nearly there having prob's with that hard part you were saying about i'll get it thank you JUSTIN always wanted to learn this
Justin, What a tremendous lesson of a very tricky lesson. Think it's gonna take time but I know it's going to be worth it. Thank you very much for this.
thanks from Siberia, Justin! although all Russians are considered to be highly-skilled balalaika players, some of us also like to play the guitar from time to time (a bear doing drums of course :)
hi justin ...i cant believe when i got to know u have uploaded this song..i learnt sultans of swing from ur videos too..i have been trying to find a way to learn this particlular one...and you do make it very interesting..thanks a ton

Hi Justin, you're a really authentic guy and you exude calmness and passion as you teach. You've got the goods man. Thank you for sharing - again!
Great lesson,Mark Knopler is self taught and if you watch look at him playing on videoes his technique is always slightly unorthodox.
It took me 30 years to find this brilliant lesson. Really thank you.
Stop using internet explorer then.
Great. When I tried it first I didn´t know that it´s tuned different.

Claudio Cicolin is right, bass notes are missing, but honestly it's impossible we will get 100% of the song, Mark Knopfler is just immense

I've never seen you enjoy your own playing this much. And I learned the whole song with your help. Thanks again Justin!
I love your face when u play. Can see the enjoyment u get, like total bliss from the music. Makes me smile
After many hours of practice on this..finally starting to click..can't thank you enough Justin..one song I have allways wanted to play..your a legend
Thank you so much for this....! Knopfler truly is a genius, but you're pretty incredible yourself.....! That guitar has a wonderful and unique tone....

here for my daily like. Thanks for the lessons Justin, you're the best teacher ever.
25 thumbs down... are you kidding me, hands down the BEST TUTORIAL on youtube to date, brilliant work mate.. thanks
A nice lesson, well paced and the close ups are very helpful. I'd always played this in normal tuning but with dropped G and capo it gets the authentic feel.
Thank you so much. Have you considered supporting Justin and his mission of ‘teaching the world to play’? If you are able, every donation enables him to make more lessons and content free to all. www.justinguitar.com/donate

Wonderful lesson Justin. I met Mark at 16. I was lucky enough to hear him rehearse
Telegraph Road. Just him and me in the room. A treasured memory. Thanks again.

Thank you so much Justin...for this and the others. I think the repeated theme by the comments left is that you have rejuvinated our love to play! Thank you so much for that!!!
One of the most difficult intros to get the right bounce feel while still maintaining the nonstop movement of your finger rolls
I will say this again and again, your lessons are the best! Many many thanks Justin.

wow justin has some nice taste.every time h posts a song lesson i stop watching 1 minute in and go listen to the song 5 times for half an hour lol. then i come back and listen to justin play for half an hour then finally go and learn it lol.
That is so nice. Just got your folk fingerstyle lessons in the mail so plenty of sore fingertips on the way.
Fabulous video, Justin. Thanks for all the great lessons and this one in particular :)
Wow! We saw Mark doing this in Cordoba last year on our honeymoon, amazing. Now I can learn it. Thanks as always Justin, great work.
Thank you very much.
the best song ever created !!! justin u r a genious!!1
