I've been teaching my brother about curls thanks to your vids. He started growing his hair out during quarantine. He and I are the only curly gingers in our family and the curly community definitely helped me fix the problems with my hair that no one else could.
okay wtf where has this channel been all my life?! in school i used to straighten my hair to death every day because i was bullied for my frizzy 'hagrid' hair. now im 25 and STILL figuring out how to look after my curls. thank you for these videos!
I'm learning so much! I had no idea my hair was actually wavy/curly until recently...for decades I just thought I had huge, dry, fluffy hair. I just had no idea I was pulling it, brushing it, and drying it straight. This is all so helpful and I see such a huge difference in the health of my hair!
I recently started using conditioner before shampoo as well as after and it's a game changer. My oil heavy conditioner I was using when my hair was dry works perfectly to break up styling product residue before I shampoo. I now use a lighter conditioner after shampooing instead now that my hair doesn't need as much moisture :)
@@shannonepplett7890 Mostly, yes. I drench my hair, add conditioner from root to tips, let it sit for a moment while I shave, make sure it is very wet again before adding shampoo for maximum suds, apply shampoo to the roots, use a gentle scalp scrubber brush under the flow of the shower while rinsing it out then apply conditioner from ears down and let it sit while I wash my face, squish to condish, gently do a final detangle of the hair with a wide tooth comb or tangle teezer and exit the shower to put my hair straight into a microfibre turban.
@@Aya-uj9td Yes if I have styling product to wash out, I do. If I have no stylers in but my hair needs a wash I will shampoo then condition as normal :)
This helped so much, Gena! Especially the tip about washing and all upside down. I've been doing that lately and I've definitely noticed a difference but I didn't know why. It's the fuller cuticle. Thanks! Now I'm off to watch your 8 styling mistakes video 😊
I’ve been styling my curls for roughly 3 years now and I’ve been doing the same things to my hair that whole time, now I’ve stumbled across this video and my hair has definitely changed for the better!
I thought I was nuts when it came to conditioning my hair because I, too, was under the impression that when you conditioned your hair you were to not condition the roots because you wouldn't get lift or volume! I'm glad to know that even hair that is dryer, high porosity or lightweight, still needs conditioning even if it's just a glaze over. Also I was basically indoctrinated to wash my hair upside down probably since childhood, typically in the sink! But it's good to know that washing my hair in a vertical position, i.e. my hair in the shower, is actually better off because I'm following the cuticle and it means smoother, less frizzy results. Great video Gina. I'm glad I found your channel!
I tried some of your tips yesterday when I washed my hair, specifically, dry detangling with an oil and applying a small amount of conditioner prior to shampooing. I also tried manipulating my hair less during diffusing, as I've observed that too much manipulation does cause more frizz (and I think I remembering you mentioning it somewhere). I tend to wash and style my hair in the evening and let sleeping on it (with a bonnet) break the gel cast. This morning I did have only a minimal amount of frizz, but my hair was also less full and less curly than usual. My hair does look good, but I like a fuller curlier look. I do appreciate your tips and will continue to tweak them till they work for me. This is clearly a work in progress. Thanks for your videos! 🙂
Gina, this is such a helpful video! You explained a lot why for me having super low porosity hair warmer water and wet styling is the only way my hair absorbs product. Cold water and damp hair only make the products sit on top and build up really quick! PS: my hair tangles very little. Thank you Gina!!
I'm a guy. All my life I've just used shampoo. Once my hair is wet, I unable to run my fingers through em. Applying shampoo fixes that but as soon as I wash it out, my hair turns to glue again. I thought that was normal for everyone untill recently. There is no way I can style my hair when it's wet without pulling on and breaking alot of hair. Any advice?
This is such a good thorough video, until you put the deep conditioner on. How do you rinse it out? In the sink with your hair upside down, like you specifically say not to do! I would really appreciate an answer please. I have only done this method once so far, but it really improved the frizz on my hair and I will definitly continue doing it this way. Thank you.
This helped me so much! My great-gradma, grandma, and mom all had curly hair. But my mom never really gave me any tips on how to fix/style it. She has gotten my shampoo/condition for curly hair and other products from Rizzo Curls but never really and tips, so I would look on yt and tt for tips. This has bu far been the most informational video I have seen so far thank you!😌
you lifesaver. I always thought it was just the humidity but ends up a quick brush before a shower isn't enough to detangle, i need to condition before my shampooing which i never even knew was a possible concept lol. Hair grows a lot longer now
Such an interesting point on washing upside down. Everyone promotes it but I only find my wavy bleached hair looks terrible after I've done that. I can't leave conditioner on for long because it's uncomfortable and when I flick it back over the shape and tangle is just horrible. It always looks ugly 🤣 I'm going to try the conditioner shampoo conditioner tonight. I really struggle to get my top layer to wave. Its always frizzy no matter what I do, I'm blaming the bleach 😒
Curly hair issue: never heard anyone talk about this. My curls will be elongated in the middle for whatever reason - weight, etc. but they’ll be ROUNDER and LOOSER at the ends. Hate it. Absolutely hate it. Ir ruins volume, concentrating it at the ends and contributes to triangle hair. What can help?
Hi, Gena! I hope you can make a video about trying out shampoo/conditioner bars for curly hair. I'm planning to switch and want to know your thoughts about it. Btw, love your videos! They helped me a lot in my journey. xoxo
Is this conditioning-before-shampooing the same as using coconut oil on the ends before shampooing? And should the conditioner be applied on dry or wet hair?
I have never owned a water spritzer until I watched your video. I followed exactly and had little to no frizz my second day! Thank you. I always seem to scrunch which in fact really makes for frizz!
- untuggle hair with oil before bath, during bath with conditioner before washing - conditioner first then shampoo then conditioner -clarifying shampoo ( not too usually) - normally not upside down - dont skip conditioner -conditioning almist everything just not the inside in scalp. Just pass on top of the scalp with your hands -running fingers through hair to untagle. -deep conditioning 1-4 per months - (from twist) -use warm water. Not too cold or too hot -using cotton fiber to dry it out. Not common body towel.

Good tips, because lately my hair has been tangling into knots. I clarify once monthly, since I don't use other styling creams right now, other than a monthly protein treatment.

The hair is still falling in the same direction (root to tip at the bottom), just in front of your face instead of behind it... and you're still running your hands root to tip, the same way the cuticles go. The only real issue is getting it to fall naturally afterward (flipping it back).

Very informative video, thank you! Do you think it's ok to use conditioner or oil to dry detangle if you're using a cowash? I alternate cowash and shampoo. I thought it may not be fully removed on the cowash days?
Yeah, it may not be necessary when just using a co-wash because it's so mild anyways. You could either dry detangle first (with a little or no oil), or just apply a little cowash or conditioner to wet hair to detangle first, the cowash the scalp like normal.

Hey! I'm a bit curious on how you tie your clarifying shampoo into your routine. I know you said you use it once ever two or so washes, but does that clarifying shampoo replace your normal shampoo on those washes? or do you clarify first, shampoo second, and conditioner last. I'd assume you just use the clarifying shampoo but I had to ask. Thanks for the super helpful video!
A clarifying shampoo is a more powerful shampoo, so there is no need to use both. Clarifying shampoo would replace a regular shampoo on the days you need to clarify to remove buildup. I always recommend deep conditioning after to restore moisture

it means bend over and rinse your hair out as if you were washing it over the sink or rinsing dye out in the bathtub at the foot* of the tub/faucet.
Sounds like something I should try.
About the conditioning first then shampooing part applicable from straight , slightly wavy hair too?
