Willpower, purpose, hard training. Congratulations. I'm 62 years old on my 8th session on dock start foil with 70 attempts per day. You gave me strength when despair is so close.
December 17 is a great date for success with a 'foil! 121 years prior to your successful circuit on your hydrofoil, the Wright Brothers had the world's first successful powered flight with airfoils! Congratulations, dude! Your dedication and perseverance are exemplary! 👍😃
Outstanding, resilience, dedication, resolve, fortitude, ingenuity, and most importantly determination! Always remember… what one man can do, another man can also do, determination is everything in life. What an amazing video for all young people to see, and claw their way to their potential. Well done my friend. ❤
Soooo hard! You learned it the hardest way. I learned to pump by winging and being pulled at a wakepark. And then I managed to dock start in 2 sessions. Congratulation for this accomplishment, this is insane to learn to foil by dock starting.
Every time i saw this board being used in the videos i thought it was an electric motor somewhere in the bottom part of it. But it is nothing but an Awesome physics and skill.HUGE Respect to the original creators of this board and to everyone grinding to master the skill!!!
This was a great summary of your journey. I love the sequence where you throw the board in frustration, and then raise your arms in triumph after your first pump back to the dock. Kissing the 1310 foil is classic. Inspirational, Gael.
I thought about getting into pump foiling because all the other videos made it look easy. Lol. I'm glad this guy showed how the learning curve is years .
I dont really comment videos but gotta say, you are a legend. That part of the video where you managed to do a full loop back to the staircase and shouted in joy, man i can feel it just as when i did my first pumps. I moved to Australia to work for a year only (yes i once surfed beside Mr Bennet), for 5 months i tried to foil and boy oh boy, what a long learning curve but every time frustration was about to beat me, dedication gave me improvement. My dream is to foil decently, and is now one of my goals in life so, THANKS so much for this. I hope we can share the same dock one day, cheers!
Wow. The glide on the bigger wing really shows. I can see now that the wing and total all up stiffness makes for much better power transmission. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I bet you’re glad you dumped Uni for a life on open water!
Gael, I have been watching your journey since the ladder start. It inspired me to try the ladder start. I was very unsuccessful and even got sliced under my chin. lol I am stoked for your success in and out of the water. While I am somewhat proficient at surf foiling, I am still learning to pump and have just recently been able to pump back out to the lineup in the surf and catch multiple waves. You are an inspiration. 🤙🤙🤙
Really good job 👍🏻 I have started foil pumping in August 24 after I had a training in Brandenburg. I bought my own board and train as much as I can. Your advice to lower expectations is the right setup not to give up. Hang loose 🤙🏻
wow, well done! I foil too, at 65. But not by pumping. I think you should be in the (theoretical) "Foiling Hall of Fame". Your dedication and significant skill are admirable. You should show how you get that ladder out there! ;)
Congrats for your commitment guy! Really inspiring and helpful. It was nice meeting you this week end at the ketos gear test, although I did not dockstart properly when I wanted you to coach me 😅
@@gaeldaniele today i was able to pump for 110 meters, new personal record with my Takuma Helium 1500 😅 I watched your analysis of Gwen, it really helped. I think I now pump the right way with my feet, next step: controlling my arms to work on the swing
Hi Daniele, Thank you so much for your amazing videos - they’ve been super inspiring! I’m looking to get into foil pumping but can’t decide between the new Beta Foil and a regular one. As a complete beginner, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What would you recommend for someone just starting out? Thanks a ton for your advice-it’s really appreciated! Best, Federico
I started my journey using Foil Drive assist. So I can start IN water. I hope I do not need 100 more hours, but I assume 90% of that time is resetting and getting back on foil (which takes multiple tries) and 10% is pumping. Where with Foil Drive I can reset without getting off the board so 90% of the session is actually trying to pump while on foil
I can only foil behind my jet ski. Your perseverance is inspiring! What size mast and wing size do you feel is best for dock starts? Mahalo from Hawaii
hey chris! thanks for your comment! so cool the hawaii. try to get a 75 mast and a 1800-2000 cm2 front wing to start. drop me a line on instagram at @gaeldaniele or via email if you need help!
the black and red wetsuit was a very old cheap 3mm (without the internal layer like the new ones have). the big tick grey 6.5mm top was useless cause water was flowing anywhere anyway. black billabong absolute is a game changer. water barely flows in and is super warm
so cool you're getting into it at such a young age. it all depends on your budget. don't take huge front wing, stab and long fuse cause you don't have weight to pitch the setup down, but take something slow. you can download the free pump foil guide (link in description) or shoot me a dm on instagram and i'll help you out
Fun to learn new things, easy to forget that when we grow up.. as kids we always learn, play and fall over and over. Great video and sweet to follow your progress 💪 How effortless is it when you get it? Dose it still require a lot of work to keep flying?
totally agree. never stop learning. pros are pumping for hours so the more precise and experienced, the easiest. at a pro level, it's pretty much like running at your 10k race pace
Hi. Great video. Very helpful. What is the foil front and back size of the Naish set that you had in the beginning? I am 90kg and use ha2140, and it does not seem to have enough lift.
I'm 85 Kg And I made it to half a minute with the Naish Jet 2000. You should have 3-4 steps of run-up to generate enough speed. Had tried it at the beginning without a run-up and I was not able to pump even 3 times. With a run-up I was able to get the first. meters and after 6 x 1-2h sessions I was able to pump the first 30 - 50m.
those naish are quite fast considering the area, not very easy to start as a beginner. you need lot of initial speed. but even if you get up you don't have time to understand the movement
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing. I've been enchanted with how much of a pull pump foiling has on some people. Can you explain to me what you like about it? I'm a surfer that has recently picked up wing foiling & I'm starting to understand the draw of most foil disciplines. But pump foiling for the sake of pump foiling (not connecting waves) I truly don't understand... Why are people spending so much time, money & effort on learning this for split seconds of glide? I'm so curious, hope to hear from you (or others)
that's a very good question. sometimes it's the only viable option. i used to live 250km away from the sea in a place with 30 windy days per year and some small lakes. and i was on a budget. i agree that downwinding and surf foiling are more fascinating. but now that i know how to pump i'm gonna get those skills faster! and on top of that it's cool to be able to go out there no matter the conditions
Was it really your first experience in foiling or before starting pumping foil, did you have experience in kite foiling, windsurfing foiling, wing foiling?
Really just pumping to fast for a long time and stalling the foil out when it still has energy and is trying to fly. You best gos are when you clearly slow down your motion and are pumping based on the feel the foil is giving you rather than just aimlessly pumping fast.
60h sounds quite alright and that is within my expectations.. (5x a week for 1h, one Summer of 3 months and I can get in those 5x4x3=60h in), sounds like not too bad of a time investment! I am always looking to learn new sports/activities especially with a balance component, thus looking now into pumpfoiling, I would also have good opportunities regarding pumpfoiling location (lake, river). Would you say the time and especially money investment is worth the fun and feeling of pumpfoiling? Or would you say pumpfoiling is just the first step bc the real cool stuff is then wingfoiling, surffoiling, kitefoiling? Because I mean, in the end, you can only get a few secs/mins of pumping and that's it and just the cool thing is that for pumpfoiling a lake is enough to be independent and conditions don't matter much as in the other watersports. Or would you say hands down pumpfoiling is already one of the coolest feelings you've experienced?
agree! however don't neglect the power of longer sessions! pump foiling is useful for all other foil activities with the pro that you can do it everywhere. it's well worth it even alongside wing foiling or surf foiling. pump foiling is awesome, but surf foiling and down winding are even more.
For the love of God, will somebody please post something about the equipment here? Equipment is typically half the battle. It would be nice if somebody would post something about current gear options and how they affect success.
in summary this is not worth my time. i am curious what muscles get the excersise though. if the right group of muscles is engaged in this cough of a water sport i might reconsider.
once you experience that feeling of flying you change your mind! it's like surfing, but better. it's not only a full body workout, it's about feelings. it's not a normal sport. + with the right gear and process, it doesn't take that long
Same here. What are in your opinion the differences in pump performance between a cheap wetsuit, a drysuit and a proper surfing wetsuit? I have both a 5/4 chest entry wetsuit and an old drysuit and am trying to figure out which combo is best for winter in swiss lake.
first wetsuit (black - red): 3mm cheap, old, holes, no internal layer, not stretchy. water flows in all the time so it's almost like wearing some normal clothes. new billabong absloute 4/5 (full black one): incredible. survived in 7 degrees water easily, water barely flows in, super warm, super comfy, super stretch. when you take it off you smoke like an icecream out of the refrigerator in summer
i recommend high quality surf wetsuits 4/5mm until 7 degrees celsius water temp. below, 5/6mm. above 18 3/4. above 22 2mm. it also depends on your tolerance to cold temperature
Willpower, purpose, hard training. Congratulations. I'm 62 years old on my 8th session on dock start foil with 70 attempts per day. You gave me strength when despair is so close.
stick with it... I am 62.. we maybe learn slower... around session 40 it started to come together...

Pumpfoiling seems like the most difficult foiling niche to master... your willpower is admirable and payed off, very impressive, nice work!
I thought about getting into pump foiling because all the other videos made it look easy. Lol. I'm glad this guy showed how the learning curve is years .
thanks man! it is indeed probably one of the most difficult niche to master, but surf foiling and downwinding is not easy gig...
it doesn't have to be this hard aghah but it's not easy

i should have, but i'm stubborn
what do you ecommend to start? size weght of board and fins? im 1.70 ,65 kgs
ketos foil: dockstart board 90 + pump 1995 front wing + 75 evo mast + alu fuselage + 180 stab

I would like to first try an electric one
go for it, it's a good way to start and get the feeling but you'll probably soon get bored and get a pump foil or a foil drive ahah
Grab a kite and enjoy best of foiling all day long with awesome maneuvers ;)
i hope i'll get into that but sometimes pump foiling is the only option!
that is, the larger the front wing, the lighter?
the larger the front wing, the easier (sort of)
Wish i could have told you buy on3 of those wind wings and wait for / windy day.. you’ll b3 shock3d
it wasn't windy enough where i started!

never save money on foils AND WETSUITS!
first wetsuit (black - red): 3mm cheap, old, holes, no internal layer, not stretchy. water flows in all the time so it's almost like wearing some normal clothes.
new billabong absloute 4/5 (full black one): incredible. survived in 7 degrees water easily, water barely flows in, super warm, super comfy, super stretch. when you take it off you smoke like an icecream out of the refrigerator in summer
i recommend high quality surf wetsuits 4/5mm until 7 degrees celsius water temp. below, 5/6mm. above 18 3/4. above 22 2mm. it also depends on your tolerance to cold temperature
for spring / autumn in decently warm places, a open water swimming wetsuit does the job great
😎🤩💯
Make use of kite.
will do, thanks!
