Yes volume and thickness are so key. I went through two foils that were within 100cm² of each other, when I was learning. One was impossible, the other was magic and saved me from dropping the sport. It's a shame many manufacturers don't bother listing these numbers.

I started my journey using Foil Drive assist. So I can start IN water. I hope I do not need 100 more hours, but I assume 90% of that time is resetting and getting back on foil (which takes multiple tries) and 10% is pumping. Where with Foil Drive I can reset without getting off the board so 90% of the session is actually trying to pump while on foil

Wonderful video, thanks for sharing. I've been enchanted with how much of a pull pump foiling has on some people. Can you explain to me what you like about it? I'm a surfer that has recently picked up wing foiling & I'm starting to understand the draw of most foil disciplines. But pump foiling for the sake of pump foiling (not connecting waves) I truly don't understand... Why are people spending so much time, money & effort on learning this for split seconds of glide? I'm so curious, hope to hear from you (or others)

Soooo hard! You learned it the hardest way. I learned to pump by winging and being pulled at a wakepark. And then I managed to dock start in 2 sessions. Congratulation for this accomplishment, this is insane to learn to foil by dock starting.

This was a great summary of your journey. I love the sequence where you throw the board in frustration, and then raise your arms in triumph after your first pump back to the dock. Kissing the 1310 foil is classic. Inspirational, Gael.

When I learned pumpfoiling impact vest saved me few times from bruised ribs and helmet I was glad having it hitting water many, many times. I don't think I'd have concussion, but I'd never allow anyone learn pumpfoiling without helmet and impact vest. Here in US, it's much cheaper than a doctor's visit. For beginners, I'd highly recommend helmet, impact vest and at the very beginning waist supporting belt for crazy wheelies on foil and falling back in uncontrollable fashion. Just my experience. P.s.: eye protection in not bad idea as well
