  • We spent the day driving the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 First Edition so here is my review of what I like and don’t like.
As we happen to also have here a Tesla Model 3 Long Range and a BMW i4 40e I can also run some comparisons with those.
Let me know what you think
    Thanks for watching!

The BMW's frunk isn't too bad. You can fit a leaf in there and the Leaf is not a small car anymore.

Always informative. I've seen a couple of Ioniq 6s in the wild, both in white, and I rather like the look of them. Having an EV6 myself I sort of agree with your moan about the infotainment system, but when you learn how to use it (and customise it so that all the buttons are in easy reach) then it works well enough. The comfort, space, charging speed, and driving assists more than make up for a slight clunkiness in the SatNav that I might only use once every couple of months.
I won't be changing my car any time soon, but if I had to choose one of the three in this video I'd go for the Hyundai (just remember the last syllable is pronounced "day"). But I'm thinking about the EV9 when that comes out. If it builds on and betters the EV6 then it will be amazing.

A brilliant informative video and it backs up my thought that if I had the budget the Ioniq 6 would be an easy choice for me with my only negative being the boot opening as I do carry round a large insulated bag (I virtually only use the screen to see my battery % in my Ioniq so that wouldn't bother me much). I love the looks, feel and efficiency and while the supercharger network is nice with the range of the Ioniq 6 I'd almost never use a public charger and I couldn't look at the BMW everyday with that grill.

On the subject digital mirrors (cameras and screens) with a traditional mirror if you move your position you can change your view through the mirror this is the failure of screens, you can't see more than what appears on the screen.
There is a way of bringing the mirror inboard the vehicle, reducing drag, PRISMATIC MIRRORS.

After 7500 km in ev6 awd and as a previous Audi and BMW owner, I would choose Ioniq 6. I don't like the design and refinement of Tesla. I4 is really nice, and if I don't have a daughter, I would pick it. I've just done almost 1200 km holiday trip from Poland to Croatia and 800 v architecture combined with ionity 350 charges gives Teslas run for its money on longer journey.

For some time I wanted the Ioniq 6 to replace my Ioniq 38kWh, but it lacks a little of the practicality I want (no ski hatch for example) and I’m still a little disappointed with the final styling. I’ve driven a model 3; it was quick and comfortable, but no quieter than our Ioniq. I’ve been in a 4 series GC, but an i4 and space is a little tight. I don’t want an SUV, but at the moment my favoured replacement seems to be the Polestar 2. What are your thoughts on that as an alternative Richard?

  • @bentaxelrod
    @bentaxelrod 11 місяців тому +9

The look of a car is subjective. I think the Ioniq 6 looks the best of the three.
It came out on top in range and charging.
It’s better to drive than I expected.
The Tesla and the BMW are great cars but I think their fronts are hideous.
    I prefer the Teslas wheels.
See what I mean about subjective.

It was very interesting when you do the comparison between the Hyundai car efficiency data and the app efficiency data. The same discrepancy exists with the Kia EV6. I always find that the car is about 15 to 20% lower than the app. The app creator has never been able to give me an explanation as to why that is because he says that the data comes from the same source so should be the same. I don’t know whether anyone can shed any light on this? Thank you for a great review.

I like the look of the Ionic 6 personally but to me it doesn't stack up so well here in NZ with current pricing. Comparing base RWD 6 to Model 3:
    1. The 6 RWD costs $79,990 and the model 3 RWD $68,200 (drive away price) - which is a significant difference to me.
    2. Range 6 (54 kWh): 429km versus model 3 (60 kWh): 491km (yeah thats not what you get real world however I'm sure the model 3 gets more range than the 6).
    3. Performance 6 0-100kph 7.4s (top speed 185kph) versus model 3 0-100 6.1s (top speed 225 kph - not that we need that). I like the acceleration and handling of the model 3.
    4. And the other advantages of Tesla, as you pointed out: efficiency (very low energy cost), software, super chargers and storage space.
So if you prioritise comfort and styling, then the Ionic 6 may be a good choice for you but otherwise the Model 3 is pretty compelling.

I currently drive a i4 40 (carpool) but have a ioniq 6 coming, the main reason is that in the basic i4 you cannot recline the seat bottom so only supports my butt, and since I am almost 2m tall I do not have enough left foot space (even in the left hand drive) resulting in a not very comfortable position.

Just wondering… Apple Car Play maps… I’ve driven some VW ID.3,4 and 5 cars recently and I discovered that you can’t pinch in and out to zoom in either google nor apple maps. You also can’t move the map around.
There seems to be buttons for zoom and moving.
The cars have a friggin touch screen but they haven’t heard of pinch to zoom.

The bmw the best looking but for me there are just way too many compromises given it’s an ice car conversion. I am going to put 18in wheels on my new ioniq and then I reckon it will be as efficient if not more so than the Tesla - also running on 18in on this test. Impresssions: When I first saw the Ioniq 6 last year I vaguely thought Mk2 Jaguar [that ages me] from the side. I'm undecided about the looks. One thing - UA-camr Technology Connections has tested the Ioniq 5 with its regen braking light settings, and it can be dangerous - a real oversight by Hyundai. You could easily be hit up the rear because the lights don't come on with regen braking. I believe the issue is the same in the Ioniq 6. Finally, I could't stomach another car with really crap software [VW ID3 owner], so that's a deal breaker for me.

It's semi-amusing if also quite sad to see that both the other £50+k cars are still trying to catch up with even my 10 year old Model S when it comes to usability/software/modern features. BMW will cling on to I drive to their last breath but let's face it it's garbage. Sadly my dad had a 4 series for 6 years and I simply did not like it, so i would walk straight past the 4 series even if it was £35k (£70+k, LOL). The Ioniq does look interesting and has potential but the software interface with sat nav that cant even find a charger, is unforgivable on a "next gen" 50k car. Overall for both other cars B+ must try harder :D (people may accuse me of being a Tessy fanboy but in reality I've always been a proper petrol head and still am).

The i5,i7, new polestars, iD7, and more to come are all way nicer and more feature packed than any Tesla I ever went in. Model S I've sat in but even that was missing features and I immediately discount it in the UK due to the new S and X not coming here.
