- Feeding Bees Part 4 is fourth in a four part series. An overview of how we set up our sugar syrup pumps and trucks for feeding bees in our commercial beekeeping operation.
Addendum: the pump shown in this video struggles with 2 to 1 syrup and we generally feed 1.5 to 1 or thinner.

Thanks for all you valuable time and information. It really does amaze me that people like you, Palmer, Ian, Kamon and a lot of other beekeepers have spent years learning by trial and error and use it for their livelihoods, and have no problems telling everyone how to do it without asking for anything in return. Thank you for the post! We've been using a "trash pump" and HFCS 55 from Dadant for years, and really enjoy it. Up here the sugar syrup ferments too fast with ANY water in it and I don't use thymol in my products since it amplifies issues within our surroundings. After losing so much money in the honey markets we started selling OUT our operation. I said good bye to my C&B spinfloat separator and my Cowen extracting line this past year. the only thing we CAN really do is ask the USDA to take the same approach the Australian Government does for Imported honey and that is by BANNING it. Since imported honey DOES spread disease to other honeybees. being paid anything under 3 dollars per pound at whole sale is a rip off.

Hello. I think you are referring to the "hose". We use a high quality rubber hose on the hose reel. Vinyl or plastic hose does not last as long or work as well.

Hello Bob, thx for shared information. I have a question: why you do not connect pump intake directly to tote valve?
At times we are carrying up to four totes and this is much easier to do. Also, no large fittings or hoses.

Gravity feed works with a shorter and larger hose.
Hey Bob, where are you sourcing fittings for your pump, hoses, etc.? I’ve done searched the internet high and low, and the larger quick connects especially seem to be a specialty.
We get most of those parts from McMaster-Carr Supply. www.mcmaster.com/
Where do you buy your quick couplings? I really like your setup, I've been hauling jugs of syrup in my out yards and this would make life way easier.
They are hydraulic quick couplers. Industrial supply houses like Grainger or McMaster-Carr carry them.
Always live your videos and this series had lots of information. I took some notes and printed some links. I’m going to be doing something similar for sure! Why the 3/4” hose rather than 1”?
One inch would be better but that reel only holds 50 ft of one inch but holds 100 ft of 3/4.
Hey Bob. Another great video. I assume you have baffels inside the totes to prevent sloshing while driving? Four totes with sloshing syrup would sure push around a truck while starting/stopping.
The totes don't have baffles and you can feel the sloshing around but it's not enough to be dangerous.

Question: the model of the pump you are using (UP12/12E)has a 1/2" ports? Then you neck out to 1 1/4" quick connects?
Yes, but if I was doing it again I would just go with 1" quick couplers which would work fine.

Bob. I know you have a sugar mixing setup and then fill your totes. Would the FloJet pump you show in this video work for mixing sugar syrup? Would the sugar hurt the pump. I am at a crossroad with what pump to use. I am either going to use the FloJet or a trash gasoline pump. My setup will be for mixing and dispensing syrup. Whats your thoughts on granulated sugar and the diaphragm pump?
The FlowJet pump in this video would not mix sugar. A trash pump is what we use to mix sugar but it would be too big for dispensing. You may need two separate pumps for the different jobs.

Hey Bob, awesome video. Wondering how the electrical is setup, do you run everything off a separate battery or does this run off the main battery while you keep it idling?
Hi Ryan. The wire from the pump goes to a 30 amp relay and 30 amp breaker under the hood which is hooked directly to the truck battery. The relay is activated by a small switch on the truck dash. We have never had an issue with killing a battery so we don't idle. I think this is because it only runs for a few seconds with each fill and is not running continuously.
Mr. Binnie, enjoy your videos. I'm a small sideliner and wanted to know how you mix or is it all sucrose syrup you buy? I want to be able to mix my barrell of sugar and water and pump it, but this would only work for pumping correct?

I wonder how those pumps would work for pumping warm honey since they work for 2:1 syrup. I assume not well or you would hear of folks doing that.
They wouldn't work well unless it was hot. They work best with 1 to 1 syrup.
Hi Bob, thanks for the awesome video. Question: Is there any concern of introducing contaminants (like lead) into the syrup by using standard rubber garden hose? The labeling on these hoses usually warns against using them for potable water. Thanks.
I believe the possibility is there but because the syrup is only passing through it is probably minimal.
@@bobbinnie9872 Right. I guess I was more concerned with the gallon or two of syrup (in a 100' hose) that gets stored in the hose for an extended period and then pushed into one colony. Sorry, I'm probably overthinking this.
@@stevecron6723 We will at times flush out and rinse our hose if it hasn't been used very recently.
What do you think of a submersible pump? Maybe a bilge pump or sump pump? I know nothing whatever about pumps, but I'm trying to set up a similar system.
To be honest, I don't know much about those pumps and wether they would work or not. As long as the syrup is thin they may work OK, but again I don't know.

My biggest question. When you are putting sugar water in your hives, at what point do you stop to ensure you do not have any sugar water in the comb that would be full of honey? Will the bees move capped sugar water into the honey suppers?
If you stop feeding a week before putting on supers you should be safe. If the colonies are rearing brood in ernest they shouldn't move syrup up because they will be using it up.

The hose on our reel is 3/4 inch rubber. 1 inch would have less resistance but it would take a bigger reel.

It wouldn't work well with syrup that thick.

If we have multiple totes it's much easier to reach them all the from top. There is also much less mess. I do have friends that use the lower hole and say they prefer it. Personal choice I guess.

Awesome series Bob! I stole that gas nozzle idea earlier this fall from you and it was a game changer. How'd you keep the syrup from splashing out of the top of the tote while driving? Was the plastic bag enough? Thanks for putting out these videos, feed time for the bees has always been a headache for me.
Hi Aaron. Yes, the plastic bag keeps the splash to a minimum. Also, once the level has gone down some it's a non issue.
Are garden hose threads different from fuel nozzle threads, because I just bought one that won't screw on to a garden hose. It looks like yours is on there with a hose clamp at 7:21
Yes, garden hose threads are different than the pipe threads. The industrial clamp on the hose came on it when it was new. It's an industrial grade black rubber hose. That is a one inch nozzle with a 3/4 inch pipe thread reducer and a garden hose to 3/4 inch pipe thread adapter purchased at a local hardware store. I believe Home Depot and Lowes carries the hose adapters too.

This is good to know. I will be using a regular water nozzle until the next time I go by a hardware store. I timed it while running water through it, and it's about 2 seconds slower than the 3/4 fuel nozzle but it doesn't leak syrup afterwards, at least not yet. I'm curious, have you ever used a garden nozzle for syrup?

Only if the syrup is warm. If your system has any length of hose or any restrictions like our system does it doesn't do well. We try to stick to 1.5 to 1 or thinner anyway. I should have stated that more clearly in the video.
Do you flush the pump out with water after you are done using it for the day? Also what ratio of syrup are you able to pump with it, will it pump 2:1 syrup? I was looking at making something similar to pump from barrels but wasn't sure if it would do 2:1
We rarely flush the pump out with water and only if we're not going to be using it for awhile. This pump pumps 2 to 1 fine.

I have medium supers that will need built out from foundation in the spring. Would you recommend to feed thin syrup for a few weeks to get them built out? Or just depend on the spring nectar?
We often start out early with thin syrup to get them started in spring but be aware that thin sucrose is very stimulating and can increase the swarm impulse.
