    I like pallets to put my cinder blocks on. Keeps them high and out of the weeds. Plus we have a lot of skunks who harass our hives to eat the bees. This only makes the bees more defensive. It's also easier on the back being a bit higher.
    But I get your point about the pallets. I got my bunch when my mentor retired from pollination.

    Were highly migratory. We use "u" clips so that front to back strapping cant cause the shifting bunching.
    And funny, we use that 1/2 step from the landing board to the runner specifically to lean our boxes on so we can swap frames if necessary and didn't even consider air flow.

    QUESTION: What bee frame width do you use? 35 mm or 37 mm? Why?
    I think this is a very important step considering the bee health and performance, as well as bee hive dimensions and costs related to it. I hope you find time to answer my questions. 🙏

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  2 роки тому +2

      The standard end bar width in the US, which is what we use, is 1-3/8 inch wide. This is very close to 35mm. Although some beekeepers here use more space between the frames I prefer the standard dimension because of the more efficient use of space in the brood nest. In our extracting supers the frames are spaced wider apart for ease of uncapping.

      So far so good. I believe the biggest mistake made with aluminum beds is people try to make them TOO light and don't use large enough stock. Per my request this one was built with thicker stock than would have normally been used and is doing fine so far. And yes, we do load it to the max.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 роки тому

      The state of Georgia is diverse and seasons start at much different times depending on location. Even in our area some of our locations can vary as much as three weeks. On the very upper reaches of the piedmont area which is slightly south of our home base the main nectar flow begins in the second or third week in April and I would put supers on a week or two before then if the colony is strong.

    Thank you for answering my last question I know you have more than you can handle. I was looking at trying to build some pallets and lids with HDO. The stuff I found is film faced and extremely slick. And I feel like anything on it would slide right off and not stack. Is your HDO like that or different and do you do pallets with a different material?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 роки тому

      Our HDO is slick and when new it will slide on other pieces of HDO easily. With a little time it loses that slickness. Don't bother painting it at first, it won't stick very well.

    I didn't see this mentioned and apologize if I missed it, but based on the 3/4" plywood base, it looks like the "bee space sticks" are either 3/8" or 1/2". Just curious what you used for those. I think commercially sold bottom boards make them about 3/4". I make mine 1/2" but am interested to hear what you use and if there is a reason. Thanks again!

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Blain. I should have mentioned that in the video. I use 3/8 on all bottom boards, whether pallets or not. We have a mouse problem some years in the fall or winter with small colonies and a mouse generally won't get through a 3/8 entrance. We also experience less burr comb or "ladder comb" on the bottom bars in the lower box and in winter it gives you less draft. In north Georgia we don't experience temps over 100f and if we need extra ventilation we crack a box or lid. I've never cared much for 3/4 entrances but I know many beekeepers prefer them.

      We stack them in rows with six inches in between the rows for good air flow. We can go three high but always use a piece of angled metal stock on the edges so the tie down strap won't crush them. In warm weather we have put pallets in between the layers to allow more air flow.

      It is 3/8 inch. We prefer them because mice can't get in (a problem in our area) and there is much less burr comb (ladder comb) on the frame bottom bars in the bottom box. If ventilation becomes a problem in hot weather we crack lids for more air circulation.

      I have to be honest and say I have not had problems with nosema and have very little experience trying to correct it once it has set in. I know that poor quality stores aggravate it and talk about that in "Feeding Bees Part 1". If you feel like this is the problem clean sucrose syrup with a little "Honey B Healthy" or better yet "Pro Health" from Mann Lake may help if they will take it. I know you're bees have some time before spring, let's hope you get some flying weather soon. That's what they need the most. Good Luck.

    Where do you get nets for moving bees?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 роки тому

      Most tarp manufacturers can make them. Ours were custom made by a tarp maker in South Dakota but I don't remember their name. If you google bee nets you'll get a few choices. You can also see adds for net makers in the American Bee Journal at times.

    Bob. Will the HDO rot in a southern climate? I’m making a bunch of pallets with used Simons form board. Do you think I should worry or is it as tough as they say?

    • @bobbinnie9872

      I'm not familiar with Simons form board but the HDO we get from Mid South Lumber does not seem to rot. I've had some HDO in the past that had a dark finish that delaminated badly when exposed to the elements. I don't know what brand it was. Some is made with poplar which is a poor quality.

      Form board is stripped from concrete steel forms. It has holes in it where they ripped the screws through it.

    You mention that the bottom boards are made from recycled form board. Any issues with chemicals? Just wondering if there is any type of form release chemicals on the boards. Or do you ask for stuff that hasn’t had a release agent used on it.
    Thanks

      I've never noticed any residue on the boards we purchase. It may be that they sit around in the weather while accumulating until we get them. I'm honestly not sure why they seem free of anything when we pick them up.

      I wish I knew the exact name of that plywood. I've used some myself it seems to be covered with a thin coat of Sherlock or exterior grade clear finish of some sort. I've looked it up online and new it cost over around $80 a sheet this was before pandemic started affecting the prices. That being said the oily residue is mostly washed off by time you get this plywood. You will see this in many videos people are using it for hive bottom boards top boards and pallets. I'm sure that people are not having problems with it.

    Bob, not sure if you're still answer questions on this video or not. I'm having a hard time finding U or W clips. What are they called at a hardware store or what is their original purpose?

    Was the decision to use 1x6 instead of 2x6 simply to keep stacking height at a minimum?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  Рік тому +1

      Although 2 x 6 would definitely be better the answer is yes, along with less weight, less cost and easier assembly.

    Hey Bob! Can you tell me the dimensions (height width and length) of the W-clamps that you are using? Also, can i use iron rather than steel for manufacturing them, i can paint them to protect from rust?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  Рік тому

      The inside measurement is 2-3/16 inch (inside) with the center arch being 9/16w x 1/2 high. The height is 2-5/16 (not crucial) and the length is 2 (not crucial). In the past, when I used 6 way pallets, I made my own "U" clips out of 1/8 inch steel strap and they worked fine.

    I noticed you don’t use 1 tons. I bought a 1 ton dully with a 12’ bed. I’m guessing it will be easy to overload.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  2 роки тому

      No matter what size truck we have we still seem to overload it from time to time. One tons are more economical to repair and upkeep (tires, brakes, etc)is cheaper than the trucks we have now.

    I have a staple gun for assembling boxes would this be adequate for assembling pallets?

      My experience is that staples don't keep things together as well as screws or ring shank nails.
