I once did a full roleplay playthrough of Oblivion where I played a dedicated Alchemist; it was hard but quite fun. So many hours spent walking through the wilderness to find ingredients. The hunt for the full set of Master Alchemy tools is one of the hardest in gaming.
how many people never even knew there was Alchemy in Oblivion... I mean, I always knew... and you can't prove I didn't, but dang, how many people ya think didn't know? And say "beta". LOL that's the one that gets us yanks riles up. Cheers broseph.

Thanks for this video. I am having trouble figuring something out. Say I wanted to create a potion with only a negative effect but the crafting menu is only applying the positive effect. How do I make it where I can get only the negative effect? I want to use them with arrows. Thanks!
The way alchemy works is that if there is at least a positive effect shared by 2 or more ingredients that positive effect will prevail and you will craft a potion. To craft a poison you have to be a master and use a single ingredient whose first effect is negative as @camerontyrrell1176 says or use 2 or more ingredients that share negative effects but don't share any positive effect, only the effects that you can see according to your alchemy rank are used. As example at novice level you can create a Damage Health poison using spiddal stick and nightshade. Use the alchemy calculator to select the effect(s) you want and find out the right ingredients according to your alchemy rank. Be also aware that poisons creted with alchemy can be really strong, but also very weak according to your skill and equipment level, as a Novice with 5 points in Alchemy and only the novice mortar a poison of Damage Health will do only 1 pt. damage for 5 seconds so 5 damage points, as a Master with master level full equipment you can create a poison that deals Damage Health (8pt, 30s) + Fire Damage (9pt, 37s) + Shock Damage (9pt, 37s) for a total of more then 900 damage if the enemy is not resisting one of the 2 elemental effects (i.e. a Storm Atronach is immune to shock) so you can one shot most of the enemies with a single poisoned arrow.
Its too bad oblivion gutted the enchanting skill completely. Making scrolls and cast items was really useful if you wanted to play a hedge mage channeler or an archivist with some alchemy tossed in. Alchemy for heals and utility Scrolls for specific scenarios And specific items or artifacts for everyday common use. (Damage ring, amulet of teleportation, boots of blinding speed, and gloves of dominate and summoning) With all that one really could be OP.
If you install better cities mod, shit gets unballanced as fuck, some shops sell 20 stacks of cheap food and spam restore fatigue. Then you can carry the whole character with 100 alch skill lols
You can do it also in the unmodded game, buying all the food and ingredients in the shops/taverns and setting the grass distance to minimum so you can easily spot every ingredient in the wilderness and farms. You need to craft 1000-2000 potions to increase the skill to 100, this without using the 5 skill books, rescueing Jeelius in the Dagon's Shrine and using trainers. As gaining levels at low skill level is faster if you read the skilll books and use the trainers to progress trough the higher levels the number of potions you have to craft will be noticeably lower, getting at lev 36 alchemy making potions then using the skill books and a trainer you can get to lev 50 while gaining a single global level and without brewing a single potion, gaining 2 global levels to use the trainer 15 times you can start from alchemy 31 that is fast to get even without those 20 stacks of food, I assume you don't want Alchemy as a major skill as to boost it soon clashes with efficent leveling, but even so roaming in the wilderness for a couple of hours collecting every plant you see and buying every ingredient in the shops will allow you to reach mastery and you will also earn a lot of money selling those potions, enough to pay for the training and still be a rich adventurer. Also as soon as you are a Master Alchemist and own the Skingrad house hiring the servant you can craft infinite cure desease potions for potentially infinite money, alchemy is super strong in this game if a player invests some time and effort in it, poisons and potions much more powerful then the ones you buy/loot (up to 900 damage over time, amazing health/fatigue/magika restoration, 96% reflect damage drinking 4 potions, +100% chamaleon drinking only 3, carrying additional loot for about 1500 weight drinking 4 potions and on and over).

Thank you so much, dude, i was looking for a good and quickly guide about this underrated skill.
You’re very welcome!

Haha yeah I’ve been pulled up on beta by you guys before - though not much chance of me using the word while I’m covering 1000 year old games!

Hi. You need to be 100 ( Master ) in alchemy this allows single ingredient potions.

If im a novice at alchemy, can i use apparatuses that are a higher rank? Or do i need to use apparatuses that are on novice rank?
you can use every rank at every level you are so use the best apparatuses you can get.
