Lyrics:
I tell you how I feel
But you don't care
I say tell me the truth
But you don't dare
You say love is a hell
You cannot bear
And I say gimme mine
Back and then go there
For all I care
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go to
Sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds
And you're not at
All what you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise

This is the quintessential break-up song. At just 14, she understood heartbreak better than most adults. This song is timeless and still kicks ass decades later. I can't believe it was the first song she ever wrote. She's a fucking musical genius and she doesn't get enough credit.
She wrote a song for her best friend in 2md grade & that was her 1st song she wrote.
@@natalie_rose2861 did she release that one? no
she was 14 geez i know i went back in the vault but now she has rainbows and i get it omg i'm so slow 42-14= oh wtf
Idk, these lyrics seem like something I would have written at 14 as well. Teenagers know and feel a lot more than we give credit for, especially highly sensitive teens.
@@Nakia11798 dont say that 😭 im 14 n i cant write shit as good as this
Fiona has a way with lyrics unlike anyone I've ever heard, says it straight forward but has a unique way to make it powerful yet flowing sooo very smooth. I will listen to her always.
Visceral artist
with every situation she sings about she makes sure she sounds like she has the power and upper hand
I think Amy winehouse is the only one who has comparable songwriting abilities. They were and are both one I a million!
i think you’d like pj harvey similar to fiona but fiona is forever my no 1
Ahead of her time legit
It almost seems like half of what she's singing is things a man has said to her and the other is what she has to say to him. Brilliant
Interesting perspective.
It's about her lying cheating man, and her telling him to go to hell before she takes him there. I could say these lyrics to my ex wife and it would all make sense to her, hopefully.
The thing about her is that people often complain that young female artists never write about anything but boy/girl stuff. And she mostly does as well, at least on this album, but it's so clever, and so intelligent, and oblique, and delivered so well that you never think of it as boy/girl stuff.
When
What
You really think women don't experience those feelings?
This album is a masterpiece.
All of her albums are masterpieces
Absolutely tidal was the best! I was like 13-14 jamming this when it came out and I recall going through two copies of it.
Absolutely agreed! (@MC)
It's an album???? I didn't even look at that. I just saw this as a song. Haha.
from a 17 year old
The sexiest thing about Fiona is her confidence. The way she moves and sings with abandon. It’s hypnotizing!
i love her ability to craft words.....
Same 🤣
She's such a gifted wordsmith.
@@allthetea001😅
such a lyrical genius.... way too overlooked
She really is! I loved it as a kid but as an adult, these words hit so much deeper and harder!
Who is she?
@@michaeladams5636 Fiona fucking apple
Agreed

Fiona Apple may be one of the greatest lyricists ever. As well, her melodies and harmonies make her music full, and relevant. I am so sad that she isn't making new music. She inspired me.
Bruh, peep 2020's 'Fetch The Bolt Cutters' if you somehow breezed past it.
Idc about greatest but she's my fav for sure
Do you have any idea why she isn't?
@@caseycampbell4787 Since I posted that comment, she released a new album called "Fetch the Bold Cutters." Check it out. It's awesome. Be well.
Agreed!! I also listen to a lot of Maki Mae, have you heard of her? Here's one of my favs :) ua-cam.com/video/IDvzd7xv_qw/v-deo.html
No doubt I was extremely lucky to be in my twenties in the ‘90s. What a fucking great decade. I miss EVERYTHING about it. Especially the music.
She is worth all the current female singers combined ❤❤❤
I don't like comparing artists but unfortunately i greatly agree with this
For sure
the 90's is strong in this video

"Sleep To Dream"
I tell you how I feel
But you don't care
I say tell me the truth
But you don't dare
You say love is a hell
You cannot bear
And I say gimme mine
Back and then go there
For all I care
I got my feet

And I don't go to
Sleep to dream

All what you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise
I have never been
So insulted in all my life
I could swallow the seas
To wash down all this pride
First you run like a fool
Just to be at my side
And now you run like a fool
But you just run to hide
And I can't abide
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go
To sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds and
You're not at all
What you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget what I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise
Don't make it a big deal
Don't be so sensitive
We're not playing
A game anymore
You don't have
To be so defensive
Don't you plead me your case
Don't bother to explain
Don't even show me your face
'Cause it's a crying shame
Just go back to the rock
From under which you came
Take the sorrow you gave
And all the stakes you claim
And don't forget the blame
I got my feet
On the ground
And I don't go
To sleep to dream
You got your head
In the clouds and
You're not at all
What you seem
This mind, this body
And this voice cannot be
Stifled by your deviant ways
So don't forget
What I told you
Don't come around
I got my own hell to raise
This video was given the Mtv Video Music Award for *Best New Artist* And *Fiona Apple* gave a speech ahead of its time, which no one understood, but more than two decades later made total sense.

Many years ago I was in an LA bookstore late one night. Store was empty. I was in line to buy a birthday card for a friend. A girl was in front of me. She turned around, it was Fionna Apple. She said "What does the card say?" I was rather taken aback. We chatted for a bit. I always regretted I didn't invite her to the birthday party.
You slipped big time bro.. my condolences
@@HOTRODRICO That's for darn sure :(
Might have been for the best. There are few things that can make a person feel as desperate and helpless as one does when being forced to watch as a friend self destructs due to a wound they carry which you can do nothing to soothe. Quite frankly I'm thrilled and surprised to see that she's still alive. The woman is a warrior no doubt.
I just want to be clear here - I'm in no way suggesting one ought to avoid being friends with someone because of their personal struggles in life. I just was pointing out that you almost certainly would have hurt like hell if you'd had to witness first hand the brutal battles she's gone through over the years. From what I understand she's had a pretty tortured existence from her childhood onward.
‘Epic’ fail dude
I coulda went the rest of my years without knowing ya screwed the pooch so damn hard with this! She even turned to you to begin conversation! And you proceeded to just sh*t the entire bed.
So much opportunity for a flirtatious response to her question of the card....ah well.
Ladies and gentlemen this is where Billie and Lorde drew inspiration from. A queen.
They are all toned down for the masses derivatives of Laura Nyro "New York Tendaberry' (1969).
Anna Jackson fiona does too. she stated that hip hop has been a major inspiration in her music.
Probably their voices are low and unique I love this
Billie is not that good cultured to know Fiona Apple Lmao.
Luis Reyes facts Lorde at least openly states she’s inspired by Kate Bush, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, etc..
Still bangin in 2015..
exactly what i thought :-)
.....and in 2017
2024... Still rockin it...
I remember playing this as loud as my ears could take when I was 15. Tonight 15 years later I wish I had it on CD so I could blast it on my way to work. I can still remember every word. This is such a timeless song.
The lyrics didnt have meaning to me back then. It was just a song that sounded good. Now that I have life experience the song was written for me, how I feel.
omg. I'm not the only one
Don’t throw any of your cd’s out! Whatever you have left - REAL MONEY SPENT TO BUY THAT MUSIC DESERVES TO BE KEPT _ ESPECIALLY IF YOU STILL HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY TO PLAY IT AND HEAR IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO PAY ANOTHER DIME FOR WHAT YOU ALREADY BOUGHT AND PAID FOR AND OWN!!!
Now it's been 21 years.
she was fourteen when she wrote this... at fourteen i was writing twilight fanfics
I was making shakes at McDs
I was doing far too many drugs
Eu kkk
Must share w my now teenage fiona
50 shades of grey started like a twilight fanfic and it has made million$
I am now 40. Thank you for being with me since I was 14 years old, when Tidal came out. I saw Shadowboxer late nate on MTV.. I got the CD at this old music store called The Wiz. Saw her at live at Roseland and Central Park. Her Music is timlless, melodious, poignant and beautiful.
There si no one quite like Fiona . THANK YOU for your acceptance speech at the 1997 Music Awards, and just.... touching my soul, and heping me coax out tears, and rage.
I am just one year older than you.
I feel the same way. Thank u for sharing
me too! 40 and this album was one of my go-to’s in the 90s ❤
I am almost 38, and same!!! I found her at age 14 and loved her. I recently rediscovered her music, and it's even better now as an adult ❤
The bassline is genius.
This mind, this body and this voice CANNOT be stifled by your deviant ways!
Exactly! Well said scoobycure and Fiona of course!
Amen ☁️☁️
this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Her voice, the words, the melody and the haunting sound...mmmm ahhhhhh.. I DONT GO TO SLEEP TO DREAM! DONT FORGET WHAT I TOLD YOU I GOT MY OWN HELL TO RAISE.
Mine too I have listed to this on repeat
@@jeremyalexander9761 i think she's got more money than me and you put together
Fiona is a pot head and alcoholic, but not a junkie, she also has dealt with eating disorders and PTSD from
Being sexually assaulted when she was like 12... and being her new album is coming out, I am not sure what you mean by burnout
Mine too!!! Fiona Apple is a creative genius!!!
Her writing and how she sings , looking back is like a new age blues/rap before it was even a thing. She is deep like oceans on other worlds that dwarf ours. Other worldly woman.
Im 14 and Lana and Fiona really help and inspire me with poetry. I write many poems which i keep secret most the time, but in my english class if we have time i tell a poem i wrote. One day in class i showed my poem called "Seceret Holder" and it was about the moon, my teatcher said it was really nice and told others i was gonna be a famous poet one day, that made me so happy!!! It made my day :)
You can never go wrong with Lana and Fiona! Two of the best of all time!
"And now you run a FOOL, but you just run to HIDE, and I can't ABIDE..." YAAAAS 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥
Her singing on this tune is so well crafted...
Still in my rotation 2024!!!
I’m listening to Fiona Apple Sleep To Dream mid September 2024

My god she`s intense !
I remember when this came out in 1997. I was 18 years old. Back when Fiona Apple, Natalie Imbruglia, Britney Spears, Tori Amos, Robyn, Brandy, Aaliyah, Billie Piper, Alanis Morissette, Björk, Monica and Jewel all came out in the 90s. I miss those days.
"Intense" is a great adjective to describe her. She's even more intense on her live performances.
@@kevzsabz8253 absolutely
@@kevzsabz8253 I don't miss those days, just the music.
like repo man, fiona is always intense
In my opinion, this album is one of the greatest of all time. It spoke to my soul when I was only 11 years old & still does today🙏
These lyrics are so much deeper than ANYONE will ever know. Most people have no idea what musicians are even talking about. Here she's giving us (SOME) visuals along with it and still people don't understand. I don't FULLY understand, but I can guess to some extent. It's FASCINATING, eerie and dangerous. Fiona Apple was brilliant with words.
she IS brilliant
@@huecosenvezdeojos Right of course!!!
Fiona Apple's artwork is one of maybe 3 things that can make me cry simply because of how beautiful it is.
I discovered this album as a young woman (18) four years ago, shows how timeless her music is. Truly relatable to anyone who has been mistreated in ways that aren't easily explained and/or struggle with mental health
Note: You’re STILL a young woman😉
Looks like she saved herself from being a pot head burn out.
'First you run like a fool just to be at my side and now you run like a fool but you just run to hide I can't abide' my fave line
Lyrical legend. She is an absolute Queen.
I can still remember being absolutely mesmerized by this song driving on the 405 freeway on a rainy day in L.A. back in 1997. Put me in such a dreamy trance I missed my exit. One of my top mind and soul expanding musical moments and it still holds up 100% 27 years later. 🔥
she such a deep, soulful artist...I feel this song very much so
Whoa, She is Sharing so much of herself in this video it's intimidating.
Her first album was a brilliant introduction. It laid out exactly who she was, warts and all. From there she expanded artistically on future albums, and her fans loved it because they already felt so close to her. Very well done.
Fiona Apple is the true role model. I grew up listening to her music in my teenage years, and had all of her albums. She is just herself, and unique and that's what I love about her. I also got to see her live years ago.
It’s interesting to me that the comments focus so much on the lyrics. She has a great voice, the vocal melody, the composition, the instrumentation, that fading, descending sound… Amazing music.
jesus, what a powerful being.
shes a rare muscian
they way she sings " go there for all I care " 👑
This song never gets old, infact....it gets played on repeat on my Playlist.
I used to LOVE this song in my teens, but now that I'm in my 40s, I can completely relate to the lyrics in a way I couldn't as a younger woman. Everything I'm going through now...
I’m in my 30s but same. I’ve been a fan of Fiona since my teens, but her lyrics hit different now that I’m a grown woman.
Ditto sister
Just had a breakup and I wish I’d sung this to him instead of sending that nice breakup text
“You say love is a hell you cannot bear,
And I say give me mine back and GO THERE for all I care”
... And that’s when I fell in love with Fiona Apple’s music, when I listened to her first album as a teenager.
This came out when I was like 15 and it saved my life. Still remember all the words and I haven't heard it in so long.
One of the best songwriters. Ever.
fiona is perfect.
Every damn line in this song goes hard as hell
I've survived some twisted shit, and that menacing drumbeat pounds every time I pass a Catholic church. Fiona is a furious survivor, and her anger gives me the strength to find my own hell to raise.
Yes indeed!!! This song is getting me through a broken heart right now, same exact words that run through my head 24/7!!! But when I listen to this it makes me feel empowered!
Listen to her "When the Pawn Hits" album. So angsty and raw, definitely got me through some breakups. Take care.
Oh good lord I don't know what I would have done through my break ups if I hadn't had Fi. She got me through the day so many times.
Mallory Hoernig yes indeed!!!
Mallory Hoernig unbelievable, he had the nerve to come back.
What is it with people like that??? And believe me, he is every word in this song.
She's a beauty and makes good music...
"Made" good music. Her music of today pales in comparison.
Her newest album is honestly her best, Tidal is amazing as well. ❤️
I love this song. Favorite line--"First you run like a fool just to be at my side and now you run like a fool but you just run to hide and I can't abide." I'm a high school counselor and I often quote this to girls when they can't make sense of the boys in their lives. Thank you Fiona!
This.
Interesting - how do they respond?
I’m wowed!!
"Don't show your face, it's a crying shame, go back under the rock from which you came." Or however it's worded. That and gimme mine back and go there for all I care are both so savage.
She is so underrated and always has been. Talented beyond words❤️
One of the greatest songs of all time.
I'm gettin chills listening to this again.
You can't imagine how blown my mind was hearing this album, when it came out. I was playing guitar in heavy bands, writing riff based tunes, and this just threw the windows open on how to express more complex feelings than I had by then been capable of.
"You've got your head in the clouds, your not at all what you seem. This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways. So do forget what I told ya, don't come around, I've got my own hell to raise."
So many people in my life I could direct that to.
Not only people ; )
her acting is dope
Song still kicks ass after all these years 🔥
Is it me or does new music sound like this. She was way ahead of her time.
It's hard to phantom today that songs like that one used to win MTV awards... good old times.
This person is true queen when comes to vocals and talent. Always enjoy this when it plays
This is way more than an amazing song. Pure poetry.
My God I resonate with every single word of this song. Been listening to it for a really long time but it fits exactly what I’m going through right now.
the first few seconds of the intro, goosebumps. Nothing like having the volumn turned UP on nice speakers to listen to great music.
Just found my Tidal CD randomly today. Probably my fifth purchase of it back in the day because I burned through that shit so hard. Fiona set the precedent. Timelessly perfect.
Fiona got me through my first really hard break up in high school. LOVE HER! Even now, 10 years later, I still love her music! Her lyrics are SO MUCH better than so many main stream artists. That girl has talent! Her voice is like smooth velvet and whisky...
Tidal is a masterpiece.
I cant stop
I got my feet on the ground and i don't go to sleep to dream you got your head in the clouds you're not at all what you seem... Love it ♥
I love her voice. It's soothing.
“I have never been so insulted in all my life”
I feel it
Outstanding vocals and lyrics. Just still blows the roof off.
She's one of the greatest in my book. I would give anything to hear her sing live. .. !!
This song never gets old. Nearly 20 years later, it's still awesome.
Beautiful instrumental lyrical tonal genius
crazy this is exactly what i look like when i listen to this song
Proof please
I really feel like she's the best song writer of all time.
Will never stop listening to Fiona Apple
Hardcore metal head here, only non metal music I listen to, she has that rock N roll attitude I love it man, a true genuine artist and the last true female artist of this era
same here dude - i dig this bitches shit
Still not only rocking this one in 2022, but very heavily resonating with it!!!! (Not even in a relationship manner either, but a different dynamic. Still fits perfectly!) She was my absolute HERO when I was just 11 yrs old-- to this very day I can say I only appreciate her artistry more! Writing this at 14 yrs old??? Fiona soothes me in my adult years. She's a whole entire masterpiece in herself
I dont think i ever get enough fiona i my life, mesmerizing af
Ironically I had a dream last night about this song. Had not heard it in a while and when I woke up the first thing I did was play it. Fiona Apple sounds like no other artist and this song has such a cold mesmerizing intensity...
When I first heard "ShadowBoxer" on the radio, my jaw about hit the floor. I'd never heard anything like it. I bought Tidal and was not disappointed. I love how Fiona can articulate hurt like no other female singer can. I never knew she made a video of this song, and here it is, late 2022. This was a wonderful discovery for this Wednesday morning. I've never not liked her. Wish there were more like her.
Every lyric written by Fiona Apple as well as this entire album. You could never.
I have loved you from the beginning. I'm battling heart failure and just want to s as y your vocals have always been off the chart. I love you Fiona 🥰
This is my torch, scorch the earth beneath my feet song. I stop whatever I'm doing and sing it out loud. It is my Kryptonite.
