About the posing one: I've found ("found" as in saw it on pinterest) that blacking in your silhouette can be very helpful in creating fluid poses. If you can't tell what your looking at- your drawing turns into a blob-things should be moved around. If you can see a distinct arm and hairstyle, your doing good!
what they probably mean is that other colors are a result of the material light shines on reflecting those colors back, meaning that those colors have to exist in the visible light spectrum, which isn't the case for purple. what we know as "violet" in the light spectrum after blue is actually a color that is in between blue and ultraviolet, which is invisible to our eyes. so purple is our brain simply not comprehending that wavelength of light between visible and invisible, so from that space, you could say that purple "doesn't exist" (personally, i don't think that's an accurate way of putting it since almost all people see purple and therefore it totally exists)
Back in high school I had an art teacher that I think was the reason I haven't given up. She saw my doodles and drawings (which weren't a masterpiece by any means) and told me something I had wanted to hear all my life, that I had talent. And throughout the two years I was in her class, she gave me some good advice and criticism, made me get out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot. She had a lot of passion. I’m not saying going to art school is bad, but in my opinion, is a waist of time. Art doesn’t need to be study, you find it within yourself, but some people wants to know more about art, and go to art school which is fine. I never went to art school, and I’m doing great doing both tradicional and digital art.
@@thegoatarmy6699 I would say its a waste of time too, nowdays. Art definately needs to be studied, I've only really used drawing/art tutorials on youtube for that tho. I don't really think I need school too lol.
My teacher just felt like she never teached me the things i wanted or needed, cause all we did was literally paint for 90% of the 3 years i was in her high. School class
I had a art teacher actually told us to avoid "hairy lines" in our line art at all cost like She wanted perfectly clean pretty line art and in her opinion going over an area over and over again to "Make it varied" Just made it look ugly, like the artist was unsure of themselves, and just messy. Like she went on a whole rant about this for a whole class... It was weird
I think your teacher might have been referring to "chicken scratches" and not so much line variation. I don't think it matters so much for a sketch, but when lining, especially if you have a brush, it's interesting to try and press harder in some places to give a different line weight to your piece. Line weight is all about having just one line that goes from thin to thick, it can help give more depth to your drawing and can darken the parts that are in shadows ~
She meant chicken scratches, not different line variations. Try and make your lines in one stroke, even if they are a bit thicker in the end, not make a perfectly straight line and then draw on top.
@@daffodil3063 No she meant both... Should constantly compliment me on how even and consistent my line art was granite we were doing only traditional stuff and she really hated digital arts so that might have something to do with it... She was a weird one
Both line styles are valid when being used as a tool rather than a crutch. Chicken scratch lines are a good way to chisel & sculpt out a pleasing entity on the fly without planning (such as for making symbols or new characters) but if we're always falling back to it it might just mean we are in great need of studying the subject to know how it's drawn rather than randomly stumbling upon the answer through scribbles. Would save us guess work & time. On the other hand using a single stroke to draw lines can create a sense of confidence & flow that our drawings (&/or ourselves as artists) may be in great need of. Just believe in your abilities & dont worry about the results, draw a line and move on to the next and next and next one. Tho this method can sometimes loose the charm of the sketchy feel or of the chaos of motion so overall learning how to do both and using each when you know you need their strengths creates a good diverse tool kit to have on hand.
@@daffodil3063 I purposefully draw over lines cause I like it, though. I DO use pressure and can absolutely do one stroke, but I hate the way it looks lmao. It looks thin and uninteresting. Then again, I could be misunderstanding, cause when I go over lines I do it in fluid strokes and not by short flicks
When new artists ask me for pointers on how to improve their work, these are the sort of things I think of but didn't know how to communicate. Now I can just recommend this video to them, thank you so much!
oof sorry for you ending up with the first comments being self promotion, I see you're a helpful person tho! may be a bit off the topic, but I think that sometimes people just gotta don't really go "oh yeah that's great art" even if they see possible mistakes, I know it can be a bit awkward when everyone else is just agreeing it's good and all but if you have something you think could be helpful, go for it, write it! if they want to get better and it's a good tip I'm sure they will be thankful afterwards, even if they are confused or a bit annoyed at first.
Most of my college art professors were wonderful and really just wanted to help us grow. I did have one that hated me and called my pineapples ugly and one that threw a mini trophy at my head. But for real college art was very fun and I really learned a lot.
@@nonenone4862 I feel very bad for laughing at the ugly pineapples part. i dont know why but the image of a snobby teacher telling someone "your pineapples are ugly." is very funny in my head
Yeah, see a lot of art teachers for secondary school don’t expect their students to go to art school so they don’t teach them anytime that they should know for art school and then art schools expect them to know all these things
If you're still having issues, i suggest making little shapes with watercolor or a marker on some paper. Then you make characters from the shapes with a pen. It really gets your creativity going!
I think it’s because there’s more line weight so she can show where all the shadows and harder edges are. Stylish line art one of my favorite parts of art
Does anyone have any tips to get that type of lineart without using any custom brush? Is it a specific angle cause I always end up up getting the "too clean" lineart.
@@oliveoil4368 I think I've got an idea on how to do this (just a theory, an art theory XD). Idk if it's traditional or digital... But in general I think the best way to do is to (idk how to say this) "thicken" it according to your flow of lines and the flow of the artwork combined if that makes sense??? I'm not sure what you mean by angle tho XD but smoother/slower transitions from thick to thin make it look more natural in my opinion. Also about my terminology on thickening it could just mean anything like increasing the "opacity"/visibility of the lineart, making certain areas more "sketchy" or simply dotting/using dashes on areas that need less attention to decrease the "thickening". I think it's all about giving it more flow and stimulation of the entire thing with just the lineart if that makes sense? Like, Instead of depending entirely on shadows to thicken lines, areas that need "highlighting" (or more attention/contrast against certain parts) on the lineart are thickened instead and make use of how you do your speed and thicken random areas where you do it somewhat slow even if you aren't planning to thicken them up to give out the overall flow. I'm not sure if this'll be much help but I hope it does??? It's just a theory though so I don't expect much from myself. If I'm wrong welp that's me XD

That ONE dislike from that art teacher who hated your art so much that she didn’t grade ANY of your work until a week after the semester ended 🤣💀😭 (That actually happened to me tho)
I would have been hella pissed off by that. Because unless you were in public school, you're literally paying them out the wazoo to teach you, not for them to pull bullshit like that
@@fridaythevirgowitch Even then, you decided to take on the job so you've got to do your responsibilities. Personally speaking, trying to pull bs intentionally on someone just because they hate that someone feels like they're being inconsiderate.
The main thing my GCSE art teacher hated was if you tried to throw anything away, even if it was just a scrap of paper with a doodle on. She was a great teacher though so it was fine.
I get so annoyed with art teachers sometimes, often it's like they are willfully lagging behind in certain aspects. For example, a lot of really popular and well liked artists right now do have super clean digital looking lines, but many art teachers are dead set on digital art feeling and looking more like traditional art.
i know right? that’s the main thing driving me /away/ from art school, i feel like i won’t be able to learn anything that’ll help me in today’s world i might learn a few things from, i don’t know, ten or twenty years ago, but definitely not anything that’s popular or modern
feel that, personally i love the look of clear and really 'digital' looking digital art. it's not like i'd be going to an art school anyways, something about that and the overall tips give me knowledge art school would just piss me off majorly, lol. i do appreciate the vid and the tips tho, i can believe most of them would be hella useful for others :p
Eh personally I think knowing how to draw both super clean lineart, as well as lineart with a lot of weight is good for future projects that are probably going to be a bit different every time. The thing with most popular online artist is that while they may mostly display their art with a super cartoony, and clean lineart style, many can most likely draw in other styles as well, many do know anatomy, how to shade in different styles, paint with different mediums etc because if they went to an art school that's what they will teach you, or should teach you. But the popular online artist choose to use the cartoon, clean lineart style because that's what is getting the most attention to their account. Knowing many different types of styles is good for future job aspects, and sticking to only one, even if it's popular, can be the very thing standing in your way and possibly even make you feel like you've stopped developing your art skills. I don't know how dead set your teachers are, but maybe they're trying to make their students, many who are probably already drawing with clean lineart to not stick with it too much, to not get too dependent on it because maybe in the future they will get a project or a commission they will find they are not skilled enough on yet just because they stuck with one art style only. Speaking from personal experience, I used to only draw with clean lineart, but it wasn't until I started to experiment with drawing without lineart and use a more painterly style that I actually started on improve on things such as value, composition and backgrounds. Now I can add on what I learnt from painting that is more traditional AND use clean lineart. Also consider there are many online artist who are also really popular but do not draw with clean lineart, if any lineart at all. So non clean lineart is definitely not dated nor non modern. Not everyone becomes a popular online artist, or successfully manages to make a living by selling commissions online, in fact it's incredibly hard and unstable job because who knows, maybe in 10 or 20 years cartoons won't be the big thing, maybe it's low brow art or a new style of art. It's safer to reach for the companies that create movies, games, cars, any that are looking for designers, background artists, SFX artists, animators, etc. And they are going to look for the artsist that can show they have experience with different mediums and style regardless if it's popular or not. And artists that can show that they do know how to adapt to something new or old.

I agree, when I was in high school my art teacher was just like "Your wine bottle needs reflection and a curve" *hands paper sending you off to do it without telling you how to approach it* But then all my art teachers was up their own butts as They favored the already talented kids at still art and ignored everyone who either did different art styles or never drew and discouraged them from continuing because it was "not real art" in their eyes and passively bullied them which no one picked up on. At 5:02, what I find helpful to do (If you are doing your artwork digitally) is to paint the character in one color, and if you are able to see the pose of your character and what they're doing, just with their silhouette, that should be a sign that it's a job well done. Obviously, this doesen't apply to everything, but I hope this helps!
You used the term "color tone" when you were talking about "color value". Two different things. I hope you would do a double check on the terms in the future so you wouldn't confuse the people who use you as their main source of tips and information.
@@mr.shardz7936 That's completely false, you haven't even seen the colors I put. The colors were a monochrome scheme since it matched the drawing. There wasn't anything wrong with the color palette. Please don't judge so quickly.

That tonal shift to gray to see the differences absolutely blew my mind! I would have never thought of that until you showed it and now I'll definitely be on the look out for flat colors.
Good teachers are such a blessing, I’m an animation student and my teachers have years of experience under their belt so every time I ask for feedback their keen eye can stop things like if If something is on the wrong when the character turns or if I need to ad or remove frames and like idk they blow my mind I luv 💕
I feel lucky to have had an art teacher in high school who actually didn’t bug me about drawing anime art and instead encouraged us to draw what we like ☺️
Sometimes I purposely use tangents to add personality and abstract feelings to my artwork. But I rarely actually show that art, the point of it IS to disturb the viewer without them knowing what's disturbing. :b
I once drew George Washington in a cat maid costume flirting with a horse for five bucks. I later drew him and the horse at their wedding (with Georgie in the bridal dress of course, and the horse in a full on tuxedo) for six bucks. I showed both to my art class, and my teacher loved it. Best thing that happened to me in 2020.
My art teacher once sent me out of class for drawing anime art style and then gave me a talk about anime isn’t real art that he will accept and dropped out of the class the next and I took a class outside school and art teacher was chill and helpful
although im in no way perfect at doing any of these things, it gave me confidence to watch this already knowing about and even actively attempting to incorporate these tips. great stuff
4:02 - honestly the one on the right .. for me it way to dull and not interesting for me . Thats why i like to use Bright colors or even color combinations that make each other outstand one a nother and i only use this dull colors then making a dull character or making the cloats on them interesting .
Then again its just me and i am normally putting Up to middle fingers to a lot of Things people tell me not use in my art , then it just sounds like rules and who is here about to rules in my imegination and art ? Art is way of making me feel free and rules just destroys that when someone tells me what to do so i will take notice of these informations but i don't think i will follow them
Omg thank you for addressing the lineart thing! I have been struggling with mine and could not figure out what was bothering me with it! Now I'm gonna try and loosen up and try a bit more sketchy lineart and see if it goes better 😊
I love when in comics normally the lines are varied but clean but when something is intense or someone is going crazy the line work gets super crazy too it makes it hit so hard man!
This was great! Really sound advice that refreshingly does not turn into a person complaint that is very biased. Your advice is spot on, speaking as an art teacher 👍
But, thats all I can draw decently, realistic isn't great but its not bad if I have a reference, but without a reference I can do anime ones nicely, so... sad
This was so helpful-- I've gotten some of those critiques before, but didn't really understand *why* they were bad. Tangents is something I especially struggle with, I can notice them but I can never figure out how to fix them. But you actually made it make sense how tangents can take away from a drawing, and what exactly the problem is that I'm trying to fix.
This is really solid advice! Especially handy because I often feel like mistakes are pointed out in such a way you're not encouraged to think more deeply about WHY something isn't working. I got feedback for submitting something in a 'default digital' way and I completely didn't understand why until I watched this video. There are all elements that should work together, and I didn't have the constructive criticism to properly reflect on this and understand what I was doing wrong and how to do it better. Thank you for sharing this!
If I had shown that first drawing to my teachers they would have gone on a 20 min rant about how I need to stop trying to copy anime style or I'll never go far in art 😖 😅 Btw amazing tips, loved this video 😁
Thank you so much for this episode, I had been working on the same comic everyday for the last 3 weeks and I was beginning to forget some notions and getting into ''automatic mode''. I'll take a step back and see if I've been applying these notions on my panels! Have a great weekend!
I love how sketchy art styles look, it’s why I prefer my traditional art to my digital and my sketches to my lineart. I’ve just never been able to master the sketchier lineart and finding a happy medium between clean and messy :(
@Arti Emily your art is so cute 🥺🥺🥺 but this isnt the best way of advertising your content. I had to use oil pastels for 95% of my art in art class. I looked like I had bruises when I finished and I had my regular classes right after so I didn't have time to wash my hands.😧
4:08 I highly recommend you to turn on greyscale instead of putting a desaturation layer because because desaturation layers makes most of the colours seem evened out unlike turning on and off greyscale
I dunno if you'll ever see this but you're my all-time favorite artist. I've been watching your videos for a few years now as well as reading your comics. Your style has pushed me to make my own art more expressive and to not be afraid of having a feminine, cute art style. Sooooo yeah, thanks for making nice art and i hope you have a great day :)
I was lucky enough to have an art teacher that loves me. it was actually pretty funny. she would go down the rows of desks insulting everyone’s art, and then get to me and say, “good job deadname”
A good tip for posing when youre unsure if it's too close together i sketch/draw on a new layer a rectangle around the character so it fits the head and at least half the torso if its twisted. If the vast majority of the character fits in that box you may want to change up the pose a bit! Spread the legs apart, being an arm up to add more expression, just little tweaks here and there. Btw! Im not very good at drawing, so this may not work for you. You may not like it or understand what it does. But i use it and it helps me personally so give it a try if you want!
Hey! If you end up reading this, can I suggest a video idea? So basically recently I tried this thing where every time I needed a colour, I would mix one then use the opposite colour so by the time you finish, it’s drawn inverted! I don’t know if you’ve tried this before, but it’s really fun! Once you’re finished (you do shading and background and stuff inverted too), you invert that picture and see how the colours all turn out together. No peeking until you’re done!
Look up creators who you respect and see where they went! Fiona Staples was one of my fav comic creators and I went to ACAD partially for that reason! Also check out the previous careers of the profs, look for industry experience!

Ah yes, my flower done been thanos snapped

@@daffodil3063
I purposefully draw over lines cause I like it, though. I DO use pressure and can absolutely do one stroke, but I hate the way it looks lmao. It looks thin and uninteresting. Then again, I could be misunderstanding, cause when I go over lines I do it in fluid strokes and not by short flicks

Rip I don't have any clean paper rn I've been wanting to draw for days
I love "not clean" lineart, idk why
ikr? it looks really good ngl
I think it’s because there’s more line weight so she can show where all the shadows and harder edges are. Stylish line art one of my favorite parts of art
Does anyone have any tips to get that type of lineart without using any custom brush? Is it a specific angle cause I always end up up getting the "too clean" lineart.
@@oliveoil4368 Idk I'm still working on it too
@@oliveoil4368 I think I've got an idea on how to do this (just a theory, an art theory XD).

I have no obsession with hording useless shit so like
I get so annoyed with art teachers sometimes, often it's like they are willfully lagging behind in certain aspects. For example, a lot of really popular and well liked artists right now do have super clean digital looking lines, but many art teachers are dead set on digital art feeling and looking more like traditional art.
i know right? that’s the main thing driving me /away/ from art school, i feel like i won’t be able to learn anything that’ll help me in today’s world
i might learn a few things from, i don’t know, ten or twenty years ago, but definitely not anything that’s popular or modern
feel that, personally i love the look of clear and really 'digital' looking digital art. it's not like i'd be going to an art school anyways, something about that and the overall tips give me knowledge art school would just piss me off majorly, lol. i do appreciate the vid and the tips tho, i can believe most of them would be hella useful for others :p
To be honest I agree with them. I hate the over digital look 90% of the time. I like a bit of a messier look
@@crooked9210 I mean it's subjective, but artists shouldn't have to conform to your personal taste, see?

I'm so grateful I had such a chill art teacher 🥺💕🎨
This is really solid advice! Especially handy because I often feel like mistakes are pointed out in such a way you're not encouraged to think more deeply about WHY something isn't working. I got feedback for submitting something in a 'default digital' way and I completely didn't understand why until I watched this video. There are all elements that should work together, and I didn't have the constructive criticism to properly reflect on this and understand what I was doing wrong and how to do it better. Thank you for sharing this!
If I had shown that first drawing to my teachers they would have gone on a 20 min rant about how I need to stop trying to copy anime style or I'll never go far in art 😖 😅 Btw amazing tips, loved this video 😁

tangents also cause issues when trying to quickly fill in your lineart- thats the main issue it gives me, at least
You inspired me to go for my dreams and major in Art. Thank you for being you
Which art schools do you recomend??
I'm trying to find one but there are just so many options!!!💀💀💀
I guess some depend on your goal
Animation and illustration are my main priorities to be honest-
Look up creators who you respect and see where they went! Fiona Staples was one of my fav comic creators and I went to ACAD partially for that reason! Also check out the previous careers of the profs, look for industry experience!
