hey guys! thank you for the incredible support on this video! wanted to answer some frequent comments down here~
    Q: Does Nightshade/Glaze cost money?
A: No, it is free, however it does require a compatible GPU on Windows.
Q: Won't the scrapers just find a way around this?
A: Yes, but just like anti-virus technology, Glaze and Nightshade are constantly being updated and improved. Every attack on Glaze/Nightshade ends up with a better, stronger version of it.
Q: This doesn't work bc scrapers will find a way to detect it and remove any poisoned images!
A: That would be a good outcome as well, that would mean Nightshaded images will not end up training the AI after all!
Q: This doesn't work bc scrapers will blur out the poison and AI re-upscale the image!
A: Any attempt to remove the artifacts Nightshade adds also removes good image info that the scrapers are looking for. If they 1: notice that the image is poisoned, which is an if, and 2: put in the computing power to try to deglaze or remove poison, they are also compromising the information they're trying to scrape. Either way, the images are much less useful to the generator, and its more expensive for them.
Q: AI scraping is fair use, not stealing!
A: So far, it's looking like the law doesn't agree with you on that. www.theartnewspaper.com/2024/08/15/us-artists-score-victory-in-landmark-ai-copyright-case
Q: AI is inevitable! Stop resisting, you simple artist! In one year this technology will be a cyberpunk god and you will be a wage slave!!!!111!
A: Okay, chill out with the villain monologues. People said the same thing when artists complained about NFTs, that they'd just be a part of our lives and we could opt in or get steamrolled, and guess what actually happened? Let's just say I'm glad I didn't put a down payment on some epic apes.

I explained why the person i replied to had a flawed line of thinking, not saying that it was wrong. The "Ai should just replace the boring work!" sentiment can easily be turned right back around against artists, since what is "boring" is subjective.)
to the people that support Ai, *Art* is the "boring stuff" that they want to be done. They cant see past their own point of view, so to them all art is is just something to be looked at, not truly appreciated. They've never been able to create their own art, so they think its great to finally be able to "create" whatever they want, without having to spend years learning to create it themselves. Its like commisions, but free, and without having to embarrass yourself asking someone to create what you want. From that perspective, it seems great, but again they lack the ability to see other peoples perspectives. They dont realize that art isnt some mindnumbing, meaningless task, that only exists to look pretty for other people, its a form of self expression and creativity, as well as a demonstration of ones' skill and practice.

AI, including generative AI, is an amazing step towards the former. It's just that some imbeciles and greedy leeches are trying everything in their power to steer it in the other direction, the latter, to further grow their riches at the cost of everything else. The soullest ones are the humans, AI is perfectly capable of being beneficial to art and artists when used right, and an amazing technology when you understand it at even surface level, which 99% of people don't, whether they are pro or anti AI.

It's not about losing faith but discarding ego.
In order for humanity to expand it's capacities beyond the peaks we've already established, we must embrace the fact we may need to create tools beyond our own capabilities as we already have with heavy machinery, agriculture and construction.
In the end the problem is income displacement and corporate abuse, not the tools themselves. If all art was open source, nobody would have a problem outside of ensuring credit is given - but every artist wants their art to be a walled garden, because copycats mean reduced market share mean reduced income means art becomes a hobby not a livelihood.
We'll see a similar curve for the unfun jobs, it just turns out they're harder to automate than a lot of the fun stuff. Unless something drastic happens, time will remove them as a career path too. I think we might genuinely be in a transition phase to a work optional society - whether that's a good thing, depends on how people react, how options are presented for fulfilment, and how much people continue to lean in on acquisition as the end goal. Honestly, less than entirely optimistic on the latter point.

If I may, a blank canvas may be intimidating, but if you have something you want to draw, which means a purpose, even a very little one, you have a direction and the blankness of the canvas becomes trivial. Even a silly little stickman is fine! It's your intent that matters, and the technical skill doesn't really matter. Kids enjoy drawing as well as cavemen and both don't care at all about their art quality and just wanted to express themselves :)

You need to do a 'wash'. Pick a colour and slap it on that canvas to stop it from being blank white. I do rough, angular coloured boxes then draw things on them for practice (the box is my background and helps break up the canvas so I can draw on it). Usually that's enough to get you to the next step.

I've said it before, this is a capitalism problem, not an ai problem. If people weren't being disenfranchised by it ai is not a bad tool. You want to spend your time making art? Great! Do that! It wouldn't matter if someone with 0 skill can make a facsimile using ai, because you don't need to profit for survival if we don't have capitalism, and your stuff will still be yours. No one and nothing can take that from you.
Your video game example is actually a great one of ai as a tool! Do you love the narrative of a choice-driven game, but can't engage with combat mechanics? Us a bot to play the combat! You get to engage with the game in the way you want, without having to sacrifice your time. No one is making people use it or not use it, so only use it on the stuff you personally don't want to do.
Under capitalism, the use of ai and automation risks the lives and livelihoods of people, but those are not the problem here. The problem here is capitalism itself requiring people to do something to not die, and these tools take away more of those somethings.

I'm having fun, sure, not everything I make is a masterpiece, but when I look back at my work, I feel proud and happy. I think to myself, "I made it this far. And I'm doing something I enjoy."

It isn't just a haha silly image generator, it's used for disgusting deepfake imagery of people who don't consent to the creation of those images, it's used for so much hatred and harassment and misinformation. It's a terrifying prospect that ai can shift something as big as the political landscape so easily because people blindly believe the internet instead of doing their own research.. ai wouldn't be so bad if it solely used open source content and stock images, copyright free material etc. rather than the intellectual property and photos of individuals. But it doesn't do that. There is no longer any possibility of ethical AI generation.

They wouldn't need to use artists or their works to learn what those things look like, if they just viewed the real life images.

I am glad we have these protections available, but it should not be the artists responsibility to protect themselves in this way - we should have laws that keep all of us safe. Not just from copyright theft with written and visual works, but from having our likenesses stolen the way celebrities currently are and from the spread of propaganda. I'm seeing people let their children use character Ai chat programs where ten year olds can talk to cartoon characters through phone apps and that's so incredibly dangerous not just for the child but for the voice actors having their likenesses manipulated. The entire thing is a disaster and I am frustrated with how so little is being done to protect people and regulate the use of Ai in these ways.

Voice actor here, and I could not agree more. Currently, all we really have at our disposal is a protection rider that we can have signed before agreeing to work on a project (shoutouts to NAVA for making this document available for us). This paper shield is thin - it only gives us the grounds to seek legal action against the clients themselves. In my early days I did work on one of the most popular Skyrim mods on Nexus, which had a ton of character mods scraped and dumped into Elevenlabs a little while back (and used for a LOT of NSFW mods). To this day, I have no way of knowing if my voice was stolen and repurposed, and even if it was... there isn't anything I can do about it. There's no prevention technique, no way to poison the audio file without making it unfit for broadcast quality. Any joe on the internet can just rip a file and we have nothing to protect ourselves from it.

It's so critical to understand that art, like a good book, is in part communication from the author/artist to the reader/viewer.
It is not only a form of beauty, but a form of communication.
AI simply can't replace that, because it has nothing to say of itself. It only echoes the crowd

They've married themselves to ai, a soulless, boring, unoriginal way to make "art," and thus will never know the joy that comes from finding your artstyle, admiring something you spent time on and created with your own two hands, drawing silly little doodles and showing them to your friends. It's sad, really. They can't understand the true point of art.

Being able to simply draw something the way you want it is way better (and more efficient!) then regenerating for hours until you give up and accept whatever the AI came up with as “close enough :/“.

Of course, Im just saying this from experience. But if you really wanna learn how to draw, just make sure you enjoy making art, because that's the beauty of it.

    • @tanoak_matsutake

I don't think ai tech bros think art creation is a soulless unoriginal way per se, boring though probably, it's more like they're taking the easy way out in my opinion. Drawing, painting, sculpting, creating something takes a long time to master, and like you said, the process is beautiful as you learn to create something with your own hands, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, mastering the skills. Technology was made for convenience and to assist humans, so with how it's advancing, using AI to replicate and produce "art" is much faster. There's no need for years of learning, just type in some words and boom, an image is generated.
And that's the sad part, that people want to find an easier road to do something when sometimes there isn't an easy road. Learning is a long hard task, and not everyone enjoys learning, I understand that, but it's not right to use something that you know takes someone else's work just because you don't want to learn for yourself. Wish they realized that it's okay to take it slow and start from the ground up, I mean art is as much of a hobby as it is a job, and to enjoy a hobby, you relax with it and just take your time to do it. That's what makes it fun.

People have zero respect for artists, illustrators, comedians, book writers, singers, composers, content creators, live streamers, game devs, you name it. Look at any of these people and see how much they get shat on, and are expected to be saints. Actors are some of the most respected jobs in that industry, some of the only ones who tend to not get treated completely unfairly. Until you get to asian Idol culture.
They think they are luxurious, easy jobs that pay incredibly by sitting on a cushy chair a couple hours a day with a lot of downtime. Like they all came from a prestigious art school their rich parents paid for. That they should have access to all of their work for free (people have a strong sense of entitlement towards entertainement, and i get it, entertainement should be easily accessible, but it doesn't justify the abuse). That they are entitled to them continuously releasing content and they CANNOT STAND paying for it. People are completely disconnected from the reality of people working in these industries.

People need entertainment, even you yourself. It’s easy to say anything, if you say you don’t value such pretty pixels, then why are you here? Why do you have an account? Why are you trying to entertain yourself if entertainment aren’t needed?
Everyone thinks survival is just eating and sleeping. But they forget that survival also depends on someone’s mental health.
      -tangent-
But of course everyone shrugs that off. Nobody cares for such things because they want to pretend they are an unfeeling machine that are just built different.
They think that all they need is to make money and grind to the top, not realised they’re laying on their back with their phone on their stomach eating Cheetos. The opposite of their supposed mindset.
People pretend art is worthless because it’s merely entertainment, forgetting that beer and any tasty food they eat or drink are also luxury, why have that when they can have an efficient tasteless slop?
Would they be able to comfortably say they don’t need entertainment? Again, art has no respect despite being next to humanities side.
      Unappreciated.
      Doesn’t matter, nobody appreciates anything.
Edit: I can tell I’m gonna get a fecal storm thrown at me.
I’m not gonna answer, but I will give a challenge to those who opposed my ideal.
Live up to what you say, avoid entertaining for at least 9 or 12 months. Avoid tasty food and drinks, go for the most cost efficient food no seasoning, just water and milk. Don’t try to enjoy yourself, live the monotonous life you think you can live without, survive with what you think you only need to.

About the “people copying/drawing what you did” vs “people prompting what you drew” being similar. I’ve seen this discourse online - that people redrawing your things is basically the same kind of plagiarism. The difference is that by redrawing things *we learn* how to do it ourselves, not how to steal it the easiest way. Besides, I have had it happen that someone liked my piece enough to redraw it in their style exactly once, and I cannot emphasize enough how flattering that was!

Exactly. Art is about developing muscle memory, learning what something is supposed to look like and replicating it in your own style. Yes, new artists use art they like as inspiration and try to replicate it, but the difference between that and telling an AI to do the same thing is that the human learns from the process. They develop a style based on their own abilities and they retain those skills and use them to create original works. The art I make is evocative of the styles I like, but it's still visibly different. Maybe I couldn't get the eyes to look good, so I changed them in a way that's easier for me to draw consistently. Maybe the colors were a bit too complex, so I started making mine flatter. Every decision is made to tailor the art to my own preferences and abilities. AI prompters don't learn shit, nothing is gained.
