To be honest the Australian accent we know of today has probably only been around for 40 or so years, watching interviews of Australians in the 50s and 60s there are still many strong traits retained from the British accent.
But a true blue Aussie accent is not far from what Conan was doing because a true blue Aussies are proud to be inherently drunk
