- PROJECT SLAVE 1 PART 3 ‘THE ROTATING COCKPIT’
Slave 1 has a rather ‘unique’ flight deck and cockpit. In this episode you will see my solution to recreating this feature in my 1/34 scale 3D printed model of this iconic space ship from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. This cockpit sub-assembly has to be completed and installed into the main hull before any external detailing can take place.

One of the most under-appreciated model-making channels on UA-cam.
Thanks John. I'm dong everything I can to get noticed. It's hard work but I'll get there in eventually.
Soon as I saw your work I subscribed instantly 😁👌
Thanks for subscribing Tim. I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel.
FAAAAANTASTIC JOB PAL !!!
Thanks IM TOYS glad you liked my design. I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel.
This is beautiful ❤️
Thanks Chris, plenty more still to come. I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel. 🙂
Such awesomeness! We love your approach and paying attention to all the tiny parts - the ship is coming out just great!👏👏👏
Thanks Gambody. There's still a lot to do on Slave 1. When it's finished I'll start on the other fantastic models I have bought from you.
@@StaplesandVine nice video do you know the kit parts used for the wing i know main part is a porsch doors
Thanks @@nikolabakich9709 There are lots of odd kit parts used on the movie model. It's a minefield trying to find them. I won't be using any on my Slave 1. I'll be designing my own parts or modifying the Gambody parts.
I’m Picking myself up off the floor! Mere words only understate your Brilliance!
Best
Wow! thanks for the amazing comment Eugene, it really helps my motivation. I hope you continue to enjoy the rest of the content on my channel.
The lower passenger floor rotates as well go back and look at those Churchill illustrations from the Mandelorian book as in the show they also rotate
But I love it man , better than one I just did
Thanks Giuliano. I decided to go with my own version as all the other variants just weren't practical or logical. Glad you like the build. 🙂
I’m obsessed already! Please keep up the amazing work and content!
Thanks Boba Janga, glad you are enjoying the build. Plenty more to come. 🙂
Another masterpiece in the making Sera. Looking forward to seeing this at the club
Thanks Bob, I'll bring Slave 1, so far, to club night next week.
Well, it was worth the wait for this part of the build. It's starting to look really really cool. Looking forward to the next instalment of Slave 1 and the one on photo etching. Thanks for all the effort you put in to making these cool videos. You deserve 10x the subs you've got.
Thanks for the great comment. You can see why the videos take so long to make. This video is actually filmed over 2 months! I enjoy my builds, hopefully others will too. I'm sure more subscribers will come in time.
Truly wonderful 😊😊 I really like your rotating cockpit solution. Great engineering 👍🏼
Thanks Phil for the kind comment. I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel.
I like your animation and solution to the rotating cockpit.
Thanks Darrell C. It's not movie correct but I think it is a more practical solution. Looking forward to seeing Slave 1 again in 'The Book of Boba Fett'.
I love your idea
amazing results!
Thanks, it was a lot of work but worth it.
Fantastic work!
Thanks Petey Bird. If you liked this episode check out #4. Hopefully you will find the rest of my channel of interest too?
This is so good!!! Amazing work.
Thanks for the great comment. There's plenty more still to come on this build.
this is absolutely fantastic!
Thanks Nora, you are going to love version 2.0 😎
if you watch the behind the scenes of The Mandalorian season 2, they show a short animation of how it works in the starwars universe, its similar to your solution but not exactly the same
Yes, I've seen it. It does seem a rather crazy solution to rotate all the rest of the ship around the crew seats and will mean ladders everywhere. On the ground or in flight all the crew accommodation is going to be totally messed up. The toilet is going to be a total nightmare!
@@StaplesandVine not to mention all the stuff falling off the shelves and cabinets if not secured properly
@@StaplesandVine Seen in the Mandalorian the Cockpit consists of two decks, the main flight deck and the ground floor, only these two decks are rotating according to the cinematic scenes, the rest of the ship is most likley build for flight position.
@@LA-st6dq I decided to go for a design not cannon but a lot more practical. Something that would make a lot more common sense and a lot less spilt coffee.
@@StaplesandVine I mean both your idea and the OG make sense 😉 although the second deck in your idea stays horizontal/vertical which is strange unless you thought about artificial gravity.
But since it was a prisoner transport it makes sense that everything is built for flight mode aside at least the decks which can be rotated vice versa. We know from AOTC and the OG Triology the Cockpit can be left in flight mode even when landed, but of course for the comfortable access/exit the rotation will be engaged. Maybe we will see more of the interior functions in Book of Boba.
An interesting take on the problematic rotating cockpit. Great job by the way! As you've pointed out they would need two sets of independant artificial gravity on the ship to deal with the 'in-flight' deck separation. The maintenance this ship would need in the SW Universe would be insane.
Well worth repeating what a crazy ship Slave 1 is, but my favourite.
@@StaplesandVine mine too lol. Not sure why that msg repeated tho lol.
Wonderful video! Love the paint work! For someone that says they hate painting you did a awesome job! Thanks for the nice words on the Boba fett model and my channel, you did a better job of selling the model then I did! 😁 I haven't forgotten the seated Boba model for your cockpit, I've been been crazy busy as of late but will hopefully get it to you in time for your next video! Cant wait for this bad boy to be fully painted!
Thanks for the great comment B-Rad. No rush on the seated Boba, great that you are keeping busy. I'm making my files available for sale, hopefully steer some sales your way too.
I enjoyed that 👍🏼
Thanks John, plenty more to come. 🙂
I think I like your solution even more then the canon one, but just out of curiousity have you seen the scene from mandalorian where the Rotation during take off is shown from the inside?
Yes, I've seen the rotate in The Mandalorian - impressive. Whoever thought keeping the cockpit fixed and rotating the rest of the interior was a good idea should be fed to the 'Sarlac'. 😏
Simply beautiful! I’m dying to do this prefect too. Can you share your files please. Would love to print them as well.
Thanks for the wonderful comment. The base model is available from Gambody. Check out their channel here - ua-cam.com/video/Fou54GxxpRI/v-deo.html Just follow the links in the description. My parts require MAJOR surgery to the base model (see PART 2) so getting my parts to fit needs a lot of work.
Very cool, your great at engineering these parts! 7 1/4 inches in American 😂🤣🤣
Thanks for the kind comment, glad you like my build. I can measure in two languages.
Hope you don't mind a couple of questions - how many Kg of filament did you use on this model and would you change print settings if you weren't going to carry out your mods, ie print the model + assemble as it is?
Hi Sound Guy. I originally printed out all the parts on my FDM Ultimaker and I reckon it was about 4Kg of filament. I used a 0.6mm nozel but all of the other settings were as recommended but Gambody. You will have to plan what order you print stuff to get the maximum our of each reel. I suggest printing all the big parts first if you can. Allow for 5Kg and you should be safe.
Also, would you be willing to make a small custom photo etch thing? I don’t have the tools to do it myself, and can’t find anyone to design and make me some, could I hire you? I’m making a 1/35 barn, and need a weather vane… would you be willing to do that? Thanks
Hi, I don't actually do the photo-etching I just send the artwork off to these guys - modelshop.co.uk/Static/WorkShop/Photo-Etching You can supply artwork in various file formats or go 'old school' and draw it by hand several times full size for them to reduce. It really isn't hard the first step is to choose which thickness of metal you need and then go from there.
@@StaplesandVine Oh, ok, thanks!
I have a question, in the slave one, in the episode "the believer" with bill burr, we can see them being in a cylindrical place, now where would that be on your model? Or id doesn't exist in your interpretation, i cant see how old is this video without having to rewrite my question but i guess that episode was out when you made this
Edit: yeah it was
Hi Sam, thanks for the comment. The designs for the cockpit in the 'Mandalorian' and 'Book of Boba Fett' are in reality, impossible. Making a physical model I had to design something that worked and was in keeping with the style of Slave 1. We do know that in the SW universe they do have control over gravity and crews can walk around in the ships. Check out my later Slave 1 videos to see the full interior. 🙂
@@StaplesandVine ow thank you, if i knew you had more vids i would have watched them first! AWESOME work there bud
@@StaplesandVine no but seseriously, where are they supposed to be? if i remember correctly there are even windows, something trully impossible, wait now i have to rewatch the scene, are they windows? lights or is the door still open? Btw i absolutely ADORED your model, I would exchange the rest of my life for 5 years within the star wars universe in a heart beat..
@@sampapageorgiou5165 the interior of Slave-1 is very ambiguous whenever it is shown.
So, Jedi, Resistance, Imperial, or bounty hunter in the Star Wars universe?
@@StaplesandVine hohohoho why even ask that bud? Mandalorian Bounty Hunter all the way, cuz you know... this IS the WAY!!
I would love to make that for my 3.75 inch figures. Does anyone print the parts for sale?
Hi jrtien, I haven't yet made the cockpit parts available for 3D printing. Maybe someday.
@@StaplesandVine hey. I meant does anyone print the ship parts and sell them? I don't have a printer.
You may be able to find someone but it will definitely be cheaper these days to buy your own printer and have a go yourself.
@@StaplesandVine any printer recommendations?
That's a big question! To print a Slave 1 for your figures use and FDM printer (that's what I used). Then it's down to your budget. You get what you pay for, many start with
a Creality or Prusa. Both good brands but you can go crazy if you want to start printing Star Wars helmets. PLA is the easiest material to print with. Research a few makes first and check reviews on UA-cam but buy a recognised brand so you can get help if you need it.
An interesting take on the problematic rotating cockpit. Great job by the way! As you've pointed out they would need two sets of independant artificial gravity on the ship to deal with the 'in-flight' deck separation. The maintenance this ship would need in the SW Universe would be insane.
Thanks for the great comment Colin. If someone came up with the design for 'Slave 1' in the 'real world' they would probably get fired, or fed to the Sarlacc...
@@StaplesandVine haha they would indeed 😊. Just watched the other episode where you've modified it for both landing and in-flight modes. Super impressed 👍. Now if you could add the seismic charge layer I think millions of voices would cry out lol.
I did get a bit carried away with the cockpit! Glad you liked #4. I think the seismic charges will be a nice touch. I've got a bit of re-engineering to do for the wings but that's a way off yet. #5 should drop soon.
