I was lucky to work with Sandy back at McDonnell Douglas on the C-17 in 1995-ish. He taught us engineers how to improve quality and cost by part count reduction. We ended up reducing the cost of each airplane by $50M per unit. The engineers had fun learning and achieving success in these redesign projects. I was one of the leaders from McDonnell Douglas and had some one on one time with Sandy. It’s where I understood the role of change agent. Sandy and I would talk about cultural pushback on doing things differently. I’ve been a change agent ever since. Finishing up my career at Boeing in January 2025. Sandy was an important waypoint in my career.

@@zmblion I’ve had multiple discussions with our Presidents. We’ve lost our mojo. It’s a risk averse company and the executives are incentivized by financial goals. As a result, there’s no one with burning in their belly about new products. On the commercial side, we don’t have a new airliner in the pipeline, on the defense side, we just respond to proposals from the government. We are pushing the ball on anything from our own motivation. It’s been a great place to work (34 years). I’ve been able to grow and move around to keep it fresh.

The new anti Tesla people are now online claiming Sandy doesn't have an engineering degree or you can't find any information about his degree so what he has to say about Tesla is all garbage. Maybe you should update Sandys Wikipedia page.

@@linemanap I’ve always assumed that Sandy was a Manufacturing Engineer. I do know that he was an engineer at Ford in his early days. The anti Tesla people are clueless. They are just pissed at Elon because he took their (and the CIA, FBI, and Mainstream Media) toy away from them with Twitter. Elon is amazing. Imagine being Henry Ford and Werner Von Braun in the same person. Noe has ever become a billionaire in two different fields. SpaceX can make a raptor engine every 4 days. He’s challenged their President to make a Starship every month. My company, Boeing can’t make a rocket every 4 years. Not to mention launching 200 of them.

    DeLorean owner here:
I think I kinda recall what Sandy was saying about the window fire thing. But there were plenty of electrical problems with DeLoreans that time has also not been kind to lol. But Sandy's point about the DeLorean trying to solve problems that the Cybertruck is asking today. To think.. a car from 40+ years ago was thinking of problems that effected cars of the time (rust, fuel efficiency, etc) and it took a complete revolution of the auto industry with Tesla and EVs to build up to a Cybertruck that addresses these problems once again. Just astounding. And the additional items like steer-by-wire, the ethernet loop, etc.. are going to go down in automotive history as notable accomplishments that future engineers to look back at as a pivotal moment.

I can’t get enough of Sandy and I thank you for hosting him. I think he did avoid a point about the government making policy that may miss the mark. I agree with that assessment 100%, but possibly for different reasons. I worked for a major aerospace company for 43 years and about 5 of those years I had direct interactions with one of the company’s lobbyists (I wrote a number of programs to provide ammunition to the lobbyist that aggregated and charted data relating to our company’s presence by state and various countries). I have to tell you that government policy is determined by how much the company can spread the wealth, not necessarily how efficiently the product can be produced. This is a reality that is pretty much forced on the company to stay in the race. I found that sinful and every time I see the government making a major investment, I shudder at the thought of the maneuvering and palm greasing that happens behind the scenes and the resulting escalation in the final price. Prime example is the cost of the government run space program as compared to that of private space endeavors (I don’t think that I have to point out any specific companies). That doesn’t reflect on NASA, they are an incredible organization, but they have to navigate that same swamp. Thanks for a great video!!! 😊😊😊. I have to retract my comment about Sandy’s early comments - he covered my point later on in the video, so we are in complete agreement after all. 😊😊😊

There’s a lot to like about the Cybertruck; 48v, Ethernet, steer by wire, four wheel steer. Sure four wheel steer has been done before, but the others are game changers. Where I struggle with the Cybertruck is that it weighs 3000kg, has a ~120kW battery and has more power than god. In a resource constrained world, what part of those numbers represents engineering efficiency. Then we come to it’s utility as a truck.
What kind range do you think it’ll get if you hook up a trailer and tow something with it? Sure it’d be interesting to check out small towns for an hour or so while it recharges, but at some point that’d get old.
So ok, most people won’t use it as an actual truck and will love it for its dynamic capabilities. If that’s your use-case, a Tesla with half Cybertruck’s weight, half its power, half its battery capacity and half its recharge time would also have amazing dynamic capabilities.

I think people do not understand how this is working. As far as I understand is, that the chargers are not from VW and they actually changed some to a different company. Also what people do not understand is, that sometimes it is the fault of the car. There is a communication protocol that both sides need to speak well enough to have everything working smoothly. And this is the problem. When people talk about Tesla they do not understand that they have the same source code in all their cars and only have to test it against one charger. That reduces the probability for communication errors. It is not that they are significantly better by design.

Happy new year and thanks for the great video. I’m an owner of a 2023 f-150 lariat extended battery. Just making an additional observation related to the IRA - the rebate. My truck would have qualified for the rebate as-is under 2022’s rules; under the IRA, I would only have qualified if I bought the standard battery - so in my opinion this tracks with what you are saying about politicians making stupid decisions. They’re encouraging people to purchase cheaper, less effective vehicles and penalizing us when we buy the better ones. The other interesting fact is that the rebate is simply “switched off” at 80k+ sticker price, rather than pro-rated away over a span of sticker prices…. Regardless I love my truck and my only wish would be that it had the heat pump they are bringing out in 2024. I look forward to the ability to use tesla chargers though I am sure Tesla owners aren’t enthused! Thanks again

Ricky, I have a good friend that his wife had a similar accident in Puerto Rico with a Tesla M3 on a car that was 3 months old. Tesla asked for $25,000 to replace the battery and the insurance company paid it. Not $60,000 but still very expensive and if the car was not new but 3 years old may insurance may have decided differently.

The ether ring/loop should also be redundant. This is to maintain communication in the case of a cable break, the communication will continue on both sides of the ring. It would be interesting to see the methodology they are using to enable this as integrating the canbus over ethernet either POE/SPE, plus the higher speed requirements for cameras and higher bandwidth devices. I think there is a case that this architecture could become a standard (like NACS) likely under SAE. I wonder how they have integrated legacy 12VDC components or if they upgraded all their components to 48VDC .

On the Ioniq 5 battery issue I read on reddit there was a tear in the external battery cover and a dent in the bottom metal casing. From Monro's Ioniq 5 battery teardown that lower casing of the battery is where all the cooling ducting is. Again, from reddit, Hyundai said that the dent damaged the cooling ports and so battery cooling can't be assured so the whole pack needs replacing. My own speculation as to why the battery is so expensive, they don't make them in the US and they don't have a stock of them in the US to do a fair cost replacement. And replacements would have to travel by ship and it would be months before they arrived. They have decided it better to total the vehicle to deal with the few being damaged this way and change things once there is US manufacturing set up. $0.02

Food for thought: part of the reasons Greek philosophers didn't like a representative democracy was because people would elect their representatives based on what was promised to them, our representative government will not elect an engineer or someone who knows what's going on unless they get good at telling people what they want to hear.

I just had a funny realisation: There's a whole industry out there for simulated racing and one of the key problems there is to implement the best force feedback into the wheel. The interesting thing with drive by wire is that it's a very similar problem. I wonder if an enterprising brand like fanatec or simcube would/could venture out into OEM drive by wide supply for the auto industry...
