  • In this buyers guide I give my top tips of what to look for when buying a used Honda Type R FN2. The Type R is an amazing car and ive owned an FN2 for the last 6 months and have loved every drive. This guide is a mixture of my own thoughts and research I did prior to buying mine, based on what the experts say to look for and known issues. Note I am not a mechanical expert , I just love cars and wanted to share some advice if your looking to buy a used Type R FN2. I hope t helps

    Roof rust under windscreen seal, leaks in boot, front passenger footwells, laquer peel on plastic on milano reds, pixelated radio display, sub-frame 'click,' silver door handle covers coming loose or falling off, drive shafts snapping due to 'water trap' allowing the shaft to rot, oh and the standard suspension is crashy as hell, this guy must be driving on the only smoothest road in the U.K! Thats all I can think of for now, love the FN2 lol best join owners club or forum ask around before you by one, luckily mine hasnt had all of these but they are quite common issues.

      I have a 1.4 8th gen I have the pixelated radio problem I have the problem under the wind screen seal.
      And if someone sits into the car on the passenger side there is a squeak off the suspension. But I love the civic but I have heard some say with the fn2 some of them pop out of 3rd gear at high revs I dont own one just heard it but I am getting one

    I've bought an FN2 about a month ago. One thing I'd point out is rust right above the windscreen sill, rust on the inside of the doors too. I actually have a wee bit of bubbling there and its something I'll get sorted in the next 12 months. I love the car though, its great fun to own and I came from a 172 clio phase 2.

      +MrSollyjohn thanks for the nice comments, glad your liking the content. Really tough choice, I've had both cars. I would say the golf is the best all rounder and seen by most as the daddy of hot hatches especially this age range, but don't rule out the type r for something equally as strong but a little different. On a side note if you opt for the golf find one with the 18" monza diamond cut wheels, that's the best option.

    One more thing. On some early models there may be rust underneath the rubber seals. It's usually on the top corner of the door. Also like you were saying 4th gear synchro is an issue on some early models. Mine had a problem where it had some problem shifting from 3rd to 4th. Especially if the weather was cold it had issues shifting in to 4th. It's like there is no gear but if you shift to neutral and release the clutch and press the clutch again it shifts in to gear just fine. Easy way of telling if the synchro is on its way out is to drive in 4th and listen for slight whine.
    As always great video man 😊

    The problem with the Type-R FN2 is the Accord CU2. Which in current market is roughly in the same price range.
    And for the same money you get a (albeit butchered) K24, double-wishbone suspension and a much more comfortable ride...

  • @1968leg
    @1968leg 2 роки тому

    I would say the biggest 2 issues are the druveshafts. Noticeable by the car wobbly at high speed and water getting in the hatch. Which is normally getting in at the join at the end of the roof runners.

      The truth is somewhere in the midle. Fore sure EK9 released only for Asian market. FD2 also. But frome the other side all this EK9, EP3,FN2,FK2 blah blah is Type -R. Just for other eras, other decades, ek9 is 1,6 liter ep3 & fn2 is 2000 liters end the last fk2 & fk8 is 2000 turbo liters. Different philosophy, different spec's, & price, some good staff's, some other bad staff's, but at the end all this is Civic's Type R's.

    Hi mate. Love the videos! Just a quick one on checking oil. I have an fn2. Check oil religiously as I know these k20 engines can drink the oil and some don't as much. When you check the oil is the level meant to be at just below max marker on dip stick when stone cold (left over night) or warm (driven then allowed to rest for 15 mins or so)
    Cheers

    • @justpurecars6532
      @justpurecars6532  7 років тому

      Glad you like the video and thanks for subscribing. Personally I check the oil when cold, when there its just below the max line this allows for some expansion when the oil get hot. However I know Honda recommend checking when warm after a short drive and waiting 3-5 mins for the oil to drain back into the sump. I would say try both and see if there is any visible difference. as long as its not under or over filled you should be fine.

      @justpurecars6532  7 років тому

      +Nicholas May as I said in the video I'm not an expert but I would think if it's just below when cold and only just over when hot it should be fine. Unfortunately I can't make it to JF this weekend, would of been great to be there.

    I currently spend between £50 and £75 per month on fuel driving a Cooper 04 (my first car). It's daily commute and weekend usage, I'd say I use the car 6 out of 7 days per week for fairly small commutes or errands. My city is fairly small and commutes are like 5 or 6 miles total.
    How much would you guess my fuel spend could increase? I've seen some people saying they spend £200 per month on fuel however gave no context in the form of commute mileage etc. Doing maths in my head I'd guess I might bump up to maximum about £100 per month which is affordable but surely having a 6th gear makes a huge difference if used as often as possible?
    Can anyone share their experiences with fuel consumption in an FN2?
