    You won't change the steel structure of the pan by heating it till blue. The pan is most likely made out of mild steel. Not all steels are the same and only certain steels will harden like tool steels, high carbon steels and cutlery stainless steel. High Carbon steel needs to be heated to over 700 °C ( glowing red hot) before the grain structure starts to change. Also Tempering by color can be misleading as well depending on the contaminants on the surface like oil .

      also a bit of soap will take the oil of. You just removed the protective galvanized layer of it. It will now rust faster and what ever you do if there is a zink coated layer on the pan don't breath it in if you want to live.

    • @MrLung87
      @MrLung87 5 років тому

      Pretty sure most modern metal pans are stainless steel , no risk of rusting , but yeah it depends on the grade of stainless as to if it can be hardened with heat or not

      abrasion from river gravel etc will remove any coating in a few weeks - so there is marginal loss from cooking off the gal coating. Blueing the steel will darken it, and give a small amount of rust protection - but this won't last too long as per above. short version, you pays your money and picks your tune. Keep doing what works for you.

    Revisiting all your old videos. One thing I was taught as a kid about camp fires was "if it's too hot to touch, then it's too hot to leave".

    I've only recently stopped using steel pans. About a year ago I purchased my first plastic pan and I love it (Russian copy of the Minelab Pro Pan).
    Back when I used Steel pans the tip I was taught by a blacksmith, and an old timer miner (at separate occasions and they didn't know each other) is to urinate on a steel pan and dry it off with dry dirt to prime it. I did, and the pan grew a lovely coating of fine rust in no time which helps the gold show up and also gives it a slightly rough surface to retain the fine gold particles 👍
    Don't worry, the piss washes off as soon as you stick it in the creek 😄

      @1000000trs 3 роки тому

      9 old timers have given this the thumbs up - so I'm keen to learn more about how to do this well please (having just hung up my plastic pan and about to set out with my new shiny steel) Do you have to leave the soil (presumably dampened by the piss) in the pan for a few hours or days, or some other procedure? Do you leave it in there until the fine coating of rust appears or does that happen over time afterwards etc etc?

    Watching this with a freshly brewed jug of coffee, the sun blazing through the window and a smile on my face. Watching you pan washes away all my worries and stresses from the week, such as a savage clawing from one of my cats after having to rescue her from a spot she got herself stuck in in our neighbour's yard. I love the educational bits you do, although I did pretty much miss what you were say whilst Grizzly was digging in the background! Have a great week, fella.

    Heating steel to a blue colour is a process of tempering, but only if it is tool steel or high carbon steel
    Tempering is a process where you have hardened steel and you don't want it to be brittle so you take some of the hardness out of it by tempering.
    I think the 'tempering' of pans by the old blokes was a process of removing contaminants like oil found on new pans.
    I really love your videos, very informative.
    Great work!

    Awesome job there "Wayne" for setting my man up with some custom tools. And for hookin' up the "Grizz" with some bling!
    Now,.… with the shoutout behind me I'd like to say I love this throwback look at mining basics with old style metal pan. Love the new hat too, and for good reason. The one before the one I wear now was just like that one and my brother and sister in law also wear that hat. But I'm kind of partial to my 1860's model Pinch front Cavalry hat by Charlie 1 Horse.
    Totally "digging" (pun intended) your look there boss. Very fitting for this video.
    Yay, glad ya' picked up Michael as well.
    Man, it's too bad I'm in North America. I'd love a shot a panning. I've never actually done any gold mining. I just loved the Gold Rush TV show, and I play the game and of course, watch the masters, like yourself. So from the newness aspect, I'm as green as they get.
    Yeah, I hear ya, about not being able to respond. Ya' could, but you'd have no time left for yourself. I comment not to get a response but to give you honest feedback as to what I'm getting on my end and that I enjoy these videos to the utmost. When I see that bell it's either you or Miller Prospecting. So my messages are that you are seen, heard, admired, and appreciated.

    Hi Chris,
    Dad and I have just been enjoying a few of your videos. If put some green eucalyptus leaves on the fire with a low heat when seasoning your metal pans (peppermint is usually the best) this will prevent them from rusting. This will eventually wear out but works a treat. Enjoy your time in the bush, keep up the great videos and best of luck finding a HUGE nugget 👍

    Mate , if you fit a 1 " x 1/2 " flat plastic house vacuum nozzle with a rubber flap at the top to act as a flap valve in the yabby pump it will suck up heaps more and not lose the heavy gold which will fall straight back out .It does work .Its all about the nooks and crevices as we know .

    Great video mate.Love the fact that you are getting back to the way the old timers did it with steel pans.My first panning session was done with an old wok and actually found a few specks,I have also heard of people panning in an old Holden hubcap,so it just goes to show you don't need expensive gear to find gold. You are looking the part as well with the hat, can't believe you only paid 50 cents for it.See you next Friday.

    A bit late to comment but: This video's awesome :) thanks so much, there are very few video's on the net talking about traditional equipment and it's something I'm interested in. Also to see that a metal pan is just as effective as a plastic one when I've been told by so many people not to use metal for so many different technical reasons - is just great ;)
    When you heat the pan over the fire, I read in a book once (can't remember what book) that this was just to give it a dark surface so gold shows up better. if anything heating it like to did and letting it cool naturally will take any stress from the forming process out of the metal and actually make it softer, however the way I see it, that's a good thing because if it becomes dented or damaged it will be much less likely to crack if you bend it back to shape

    I'm really enjoying watching these videos, I have three metal pans and all have been left out in all weathers to rust up & that seems to do the job, one is about 30yrs old & the others a couple of yrs old.
    I've mined in North West Nelson or Golden Bay, Murchison, West Coast & further South in the South Island of New Zealand & while i'm not a millionaire I've had a bit of luck.
    Its amazing who you get to meet out in the back country & I would like to have a go at panning in Scotland as I've met a few Scots in my neck of the woods.
    Anyway keep up the great work.

    When you work metal cherry red or higher then quench it you are right, it hardens and can become brittle. Heating it to a nice blue color and cool slowly will remove the brittleness. When steel is formed under pressure the stresses in the metal may not be uniform. Heating to blue and let it cool slowly lets the stresses realign uniformly.

    Hey mate, love the hat! Haven't used a metal dish in years going out today might have to bring one along. My kids/grand kids think you look like me with your beard, now you've got the hat 😊 cheers Craig

    Gotta say I am really enjoying your videos glad that Kleshguitars suggested to check out your channel. He panned some of your pay dirt in one of his videos. I have watched almost all of his videos and have watched a very good number of yours now too.

    Used a Metal Pan back in the 70-80's . Worked fine. Pretty much all we had at the time. Or could afford. We just put some burning char coal in them to burn off the oils. By time the coal burned to ash it was cooked. Trust me your better using the plastic pans for durability. They end up getting quite dented up. That being said I wish I still had a few. Your little pump Yabbi? Maybe if you put a few inches of pvc pinched closed a bit it would better get down in the cervices ? Just thinking out loud.

    Those frogs or crickets keep making me think you have a geiger counter going off. Still can't get over that amazing quartz specimen though! I wish I could pan out there with you guys but I unfortunately am stuck in the states, although I just did visit Indonesia so an Australia trip is very likely at some point. Keep up the good work!

    Hey man I was watching some of your old vids, I saw you were using just a pry bar to move boulders. Why not just get a little scissor jack from a wrecking yard and push big stuff that way. In Aussie I’m a tradie and I just figured working smarter not harder could help. Cheers from Canada and keep it up
