I just love the way he play the guitar, so simple and easy. I personally love all the Eagles' stuff and felt bad about Don Felder not playing anymore with the group. You're the best guitarist Don
Now Don's what you call a true southern gentleman - kind, unpretentious and courteous. How open he is and his absence of defensiveness in the discussion are a breath of fresh air compared to Frey and Henley. What a great guy he is. Felder, and of course Randy Meisner, are and always will be my favorite Eagles.
After reading his book and listening to a bunch of his interviews, he seems like a really decent guy who got a really raw deal from his former bandmates. Best of luck to him in the future.
I agree. Felder is way underrated. Without him, none of this would have happened. Everybody talks about Walsh's contributions to the album, which were considerable, but Felder's guitar playing and compositions defined the sound of Hotel California.
He did have to split it (and all future Eagle's earning's) with his first wife. But he said she had every right to it & was happy to share it with her. She stayed home & raised his children and he really respected that. Now that's a nice guy
Just watched the new Eagles history DVD, and I just have to say that Henley and Frey's attempt to portray Don Felder as a greedy man totally backfired on them. He's clearly a class act of a guy, very eloquent and has only praise for those two where all they did was trash him. Karma will pay them back Mr. Felder! it's a mathematical certainty.
I think you misread my comment. It say No Eagles no Felder. Meaning if there was no Eagles, then Felder would not be the successful person he is today. He sucked as a solo artist and without the Eagles (Frey and Henley), he would not have the fame that he has today.
Dennis Alvey , the ONLY part of Hotel California Felder wrote is the chord progression intro & the verse. Heney and Frey came with everything else: lyrics, melody, title, harmonies, chord progression on chorus.
Seems to be a very nice, articulate guy. Meisner left for health reasons primarily, and Leadon for musical integrity reasons. Fine, but I don't see any reason to have fired Felder.
+Mick DeLeon Meisner and Felder wanted to play. But Frey physically and emotionally abused Meisner, and Frey is just an ass who is/was of Felder's talent. Frey & Henley were just about the money.
+Susan Flores Frey & Henley were just about writing & singing all the best songs! They formed The Eagles. Together they wrote 7 of 10 hits on Best Of 1971 to 1975. Felder sang backing vocals on 3! The Eagles does not start and end with Hotel California - co-written by Felder, Frey & Henley - sang by Henley. Get real
He challenged the top guys in the band and their egos got in the way. They never really, at least I don't think don Henley did, recognize the true talent of Felder. But Henley needs to let go of his dumbass ego and let Felder back especially now that they are going to perform concerts of the hotel California album in it's entirety. Travesty because Felder gave that album two important music beds including the most important "hotel California" as a song. I feel like Felder would jump at the opportunity to be back in the band, especially after the kind statements he made in his press release expressing his condolences for Glenn Frey death in 2016. I think he would love Glenn's son deacon, and would love playing with Joe and Tim again plus the fans would love it
I've read the book as well and ya know, I don't care what went on. Felder seems like a genuinely nice guy. I just want him back in the group. Then again, maybe the group doesn't deserve him.
the magazine down. I returned to my aunt's room and the nurse came back in and told me that the lady never puts that magazine down and said, "That was a very big deal". I was so moved that, reluctantly, I got the number to call to volunteer at the hospital. No answer, left a message. Never heard back or called again, but I know that what Mr. Felder is doing is worthwhile.
Almost finished with Don Felder's book and find it all so very interesting. I would love to see Don in concert... but if a tenth of what he writes about Don Henley and Glenn Frey (mostly Frey) is true, and I believe that it is all true... I'm not so sure that I want to see the Eagles anymore. And that's a shame.
Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon both said that Glen Frey became unbearable and was nothing but a tyrant. They both were willing to give up their equal shares rather than to be put through such hell. Joe Walsh won't say a thing and Frey and Henley make sure he doesn't. The gig with McCartney has given Joe new wings and he can finally give Frey and Henley an F U! Talent and niceness don't necessarily go hand and hand.
I think they actually thought he would basically give his band share back to the band like Meisner, and Bernie did when they left. It bit them in the ass though when Felder actually fought back. It cost them millions and Felder still retains his financial stake in the band without the headaches. Frey comes off as the biggest asshole in the world, and is living proof talent doesn't always come to those who deserve it. At least Hendley has the self control and common sense to not comment to much when it would make him sound like an ass. Frey has the right to remain silent, he just lacks the ability.
This sounds very much like the egomania that overtook Roger Waters. My hat is off to Don and David Gilmour for handling these knuckleheads as well as they have.
I suspect Walsh actually loves the arrangement. His only responsibility to the band is to play music and as of last January he still did that along with make the show fun. You can bet your ass he is well paid, since he is by far the crowd fav at shows. He gets to play a bit of his own material, and just plays what the others want. He kind of has them by the balls on this last tour, because even though they would have sold a lot of tickets, if both he and Felder were missing the revenue difference would have been significant. Three guys own the rights to most of the old stuff, but Felder is the one who made out like a bandit, and never had to strike a note. Don't kid yourself, Frey, and Hendley had to pay him tens of millions, just because that's the way they wanted it.
Charles Martin Exactly my thoughts! I've always drawn parallels between Glenn Frey and Roger Waters, Don Felder and Roger Waters, Randy Meisner and Rick Wright.
these are Felders words himeself: Don Henley and Glenn wrote most of the words. All of us kind of drove into L.A. at night. Nobody was from California, and if you drive into L.A. at night... you can just see this glow on the horizon of lights, and the images that start running through your head of Hollywood and all the dreams that you have, and so it was kind of about that... what we started writing the song about. Coming into L.A.... and from that 'Life in the Fast Lane' came out of it, and 'Wasted Time' and a bunch of other songs.[11]
Dan R I believe the issue you refer to (not the only sticking point by any means) was that Felder was not interested in political freebies, not freebies as such. I believe he has done a number of benefit shows, just not to fund politicians.
He didn't honey because my CD jacket tells underneath the song the writing credits...and Felder wasn't in it. Granted, he did write 1 or two per album. but most Eagles albums writing contributions was either Frey or Henley alone or Frey/Henley together, or maybe one album apiece by Walsh with a credit.. Kinda like Lennon or Mccartney or Lennon/McCartney with Harrison getting one song per album...but you're right, them together then and now is a group effort.
Yes the flute was very original indeed. Ian Anderson was quite crazy in the way he presented himself as well as the lyrics of the songs...they had more of a cult following than commercial success.I agree that the whole album Hotel California was much more rocky with the addition of Joe Walsh as you point out. I have played Hotel California in just about every band I have been part of and I agree that it is a great song...so nice speaking with you.... peace!
Even if Don Felder had not became a Eagle, he still would have made it somewhere in the music business. He knew a lot of people and his playing was respected. He had too much talent not to make it. While Frey and Henley did take their part in Hotel California, no matter, it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Don Felder.
@SodaStereo1984, the greatest hits album that was released as don was coming in to the band was the best selling album of the century. So, How in the hell did he make don and glenn rich?
spence798 one of these nights was in the greatest hits album... Thats the song that propelled the eagles flight from small bandstands to stadiums. From small time to big time..
the eagles is successful before don but not selling well..... when one of these nights kicked in it gave them the thrust they need.. thats why the song is in the album... this means that don felder is already in the band when they jumped from bandstands to arenas... so don felder helped frey and henley amassed money they crave so much
The amazing thing about Don, is he plays guitar exactly like he talks, un-rushed and very purposeful: it's unusual for a lead guitar player ( most can't wait to squeeze the next riff in), and it's very, VERY musical.
I took an acoustic to the hospital when my aunt was in there and a nurse came in and asked if I would come to the day room and play for an old lady who had Alzheimers. She was sitting in a wheel chair holding a magazine that she always held, but never turned the page. I sat close to her and began doing "Can't Help Falling In Love" and she looked at me and put
I back that up 100%...I couldn't of said it better myself if I tried...and that seems to be the case with every band I've encountered. They are all group efforts...no one of the 5 should take the whole "cake." or whatever you call it. Paychecks, royalties, credits.
Why are so many people giving a thumbs down to people who comment that Glenn Frey was a real problem in the Eagles? it is completely true, my parents said that after the watched the documentary and read Felder's book, their whole perception of Frey changed. He treated Felder terribly. He would take a song and change 1 work and take 30% of the profits among other things that were just unheard of, and nobody stopped him. He really was a huge jackass
ALso im a huge fan of Don Felders and my favorite song is takin a ride on heavy metal. awesome song!!!! Now if he didnt get paid equal for HC and victim of love then that is wrong but if he didnt get paid equal for new kid in town, lyin eyes, heartache tonight, long run, etc etc then that is fair.. like i said just because he played guitar doesnt mean he gets the same as who WROTE THE LYRICS!!!! Im a huge fan of Felders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of songs use of chord sequences are incidental. For example, the songs "25 or 6 to 4," "Geek Stink Breath" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" all use the same chord sequence but are totally different songs. I'm not saying Felder might have been inspired by Tull's song but Felder made it to his own style. I believe Anderson is using his claim as a self-serving marketing ploy.
What a great interview... not the lame " tell us about the fights ( Eagles et.al.)". Felder prob. foungd it refreshing to not be bombarded with mudslinging.
It seems to me if someone{Don Henley and Glenn Frey} tries to get a book BANNED it must be true. Who knew that Don and Glenn were such douchbags and treated people like this, It`s amazing to me what kind of music The Eagles could have done if drugs and liquor weren`t in the picture, With Bernie Leaton and Randy Meissner leaving because of Glenn Frey, What songs they could have had. What a shame.I recommend every Eagles fan pick up Heaven and Hell by Don Felder...Great Read!!
Felder wrote the opening, signature riff and brought it too the band. Henley and Frey wrote the lyrics, chorus, etc. and turned it in to a full song. Then Felder and Walsh wrote the solo, with Walsh coming up with the signature outro riff. Lets deal in facts here. They were at their best after Walsh replaced Leadon but before Misner left. But it was all 5 of them together that made them the best band ever.
What is your problem with Bernie Leadon's presence in the group? One cannot compare Walsh and Leadon. They are totally different musicians. Without Bernie would there have been an "Eagles" for Joe Walsh to move in a totally different direction?
If Walsh helped write the solo why didn't he get credit for it. Frey and Henley screwed him and other band members out of credits so many times. They deserve the reputation they have.
I'm not as expert at analyzing music and it's structure like you are, so I can't really give you any good opinion. I trust you are correct. Hotel California seems to have been a departure from what I was used to hearing from the Eagles at the time, they were more country, but with the addition of Joe Walsh for that album, it seems they took a turn to more hard rock. Jethro Tull had that signature passionate flute, only band I knew with that kind of style.
Listening to that solo of hotel California and watching Felder play it on that doubleneck there at the beginning is a treat. He captures great emotion in his solo playing. Joe Walsh is a great guitarist but he's nowhere near don Felder
It was a low position to take, but that is how the bullying methodology works. People in control/power want to keep it that way, so they warn other employees' with termination if they go against them. Joe was not a full share member of the Eagles, so they(Henley/Frey) could have cleaned him out financially if they wanted. Joe was fearful of financial repercussions, so he went against Felder
Right on brother. I was never and still am not comfortable with Joe Walsh being in the Eagles. He simply does not belong there. He should have rode off into the sunset with the rest of The James Gang. Don Felder is 3 times the musician Joe Walsh could ever dream of being. Although I still like the Eagles music, I have lost all respect for Don Henley and Glenn Frey. They are egotistical and have the "Big Head" and need to get their heads out of their asses. What it all comes down to is jealousy because Don Felder is the best musician to ever play in the band.
I was under the impression that Walsh was brought into the Eagles by Glenn Frey and his loyalty was towards him, not Felder. Walsh had to pick a side and just because he picked Frey doesn't make him an ass. Loyalty is loyalty. Just because he didn't pick the one you thought he should of doesn't make it wrong. I am sure it was a hard decision as well. As far as Felder being being 3 times the musician to Walsh, lets compare musical careers. Walsh was a success with The James Gang, as a solo artist, as a guitarist and singer with the Eagles, and afterwards as a solo artist. Felders career with the Eagles is just that besides helping some fellow already successful artists with their albums. . He has no voice. Felder was a great asset to the Eagles, but he is not the music god that some people try to make him out to be.
+tubeyouall2 Just wondering if you're thinking of Randy Meisner here? It seems he's the guy that got turfed, and both Felder and Walsh had to stand around and watch. From History of the Eagles, it seems Meisner was expecting those two guys to join his mutiny and form a new band of their own.
Joe Dez Like I said, I think Joe was recruited by Glenn Frey and I think his first loyalty was with him. Whether you like Frey or not is irrelevant. Joe liked him and was a loyal friend regardless and this friendship continues to this day. I also think that after the James Gang and Barnstorm/solo career, Joe just wanted to be part of the Eagles period, play the guitar and write when he could. Don/t forget that during his time with the Eagles, Joe also put out his solo album But Seriously, Folks in May 1978 and recorded "In the City" for the Warriors soundtrack while the Eagles struggled to get everything together before recording the Long Run. In fact, they rerecorded In the City for the Long Run album. As far as Meisner, Frey and Meisner have mended things between them just as Frey and Leadon have. Leadon tours with them and Meisner has given Frey permission to sing his song Take it to the Limit. During each concert Frey credits Meisner and wishes Randy good health before singing it. It is too bad that Felder and Frey cannot do the same, but I think the damage is done. Frey admits he wishes he had done some things differently and Felder also says the same but I seriously doubt Felder returning to the band will ever happen. At this time, we can still enjoy what we have now.
The Eagles without Don Felder do not have the same taste. Their new guitarist just doesn't have the spirit. I lost any interest in the Eagles since the day that Don was kicked out.
No argument...we are just discussing things out of an interest in music :) In my opinion the beat, the words, the guitar work, the vocal harmonies and the chorus which the Eagles added all make the song much more commercially interesting. I think that Jethro Tull sold to a rock audience and did not have as large an audience as the Eagles which I love. There are other example like All right Now of Free and Keep on a rocking me babe of Steve Miller with the same chords...tell me what you think.
just my opinion- in order to have a great song you need good lyrics AND music. the reason the Eagles are so great isnt because of one of them. Don, Glenn and Joe all have had STELLAR solo careers. they ALL make the music great. not just one of them.
He`s a showman.. all classy and real down to earth.. reality is that he puts himself first.. Henley anrd Frey fired him cause he was greedy. He would be nothing without them He sells tickets for 20 bucks each when Henley and Frey can easily get 100 bucks a pop. do the math
and if the others don't agree, then heaven forbit them all, and not just this band, but every single band that I can think of, especially the most sold popular rock acts. The only way we would know the truth is if we had them under a microscope from studio to studio, gig to gig, country to country...only their close entourage, who knows. And a lot of times they were fried, tired or just too out of it...it was an interesting read though. But I took with a grain of salt...
ITS TOO BAD THEY HAD SO MUCH INTERNAL PROBLEMS HOWEVER THAT REALLY SHOULDNT CONCERN US. THEY MADE SO MANY GREAT SONGS FOR OUR LISTENING PLEASURE AND THATS WHAT I CHOOSE TO REMEMBER
its a business people..Henley and Frey are buisness men..its not personal. They were the gist of the whole thing..so anyone who supported the movement should benefit...The concept of the Band is still brilliant..I also perform and write music..its important to come to agreement about the whole movement before one get started. At the end of the day people make music and people attend to the business of music..people are musicians..and its people who will decide your faith IN THE BUSINESS:
i dont understand how glen and henley make deals and reneg on bandmates and dont wanna honor the deal they made with felder. ok so they felt it wasnt a good deal so they get a jew to screw the bandmate after the deal was made huh? instead of just keeping their word...who am i telling this to? brats that rip off and lie cheat steal from close friends? really man what a drag to be in company with theives. frey n henley have stretched honor to pizzle n back
Interesting, but how is it that the Eagles' version was such a commercial success and not many have come to know this Jethro Tull song? Outside of Aqua Lung, Tull draws a blank. just interested in your thoughts, not disputing anything you're saying.
The greatest question of how the Eagles plagiarized a Jethro Tull song which has the exact same series of 8 chords as Hotel California (which represents a less than 1 in 40,000 chance of being random)..I love Felder but it is time to address this issue...if you have doubts check the true origin of the song Hotel California.
maybe Felder was asking for more than Glenn and Henley thought he deserved, maybe not, seems like they'd have boatloads to go around. they are not the same band without him. Schmidt didn't do a damn thing in the original Eagles but he makes bank now so he aint gonna complain, Joe Walsh is Joe Walsh with or without the Eagles, Leadon n Meissner got pushed out before and Felder after, all because they wanted input into a band they poured their lives into
Don Felder just might be the nicest guy in the entire music industry, what a massive talent.
I just love the way he play the guitar, so simple and easy. I personally love all the Eagles' stuff and felt bad about Don Felder not playing anymore with the group. You're the best guitarist Don
I'm a guitarist. Trust me, trying to play his stuff is neither simple or easy .. lol. He is one of the greats.
Don felder, you are an amazing person.much respect
Soooo easy to look at.Very smart and intelligent human.
Wow, that's a pretty nice settlement! He deserves every single cent of it! Not just a great musician, but a super nice person, so down to earth.
Don seems to be the most sincere honest nicest one of the eagles he & Joe

You're so very right. I do, however, worry for Randy Meisner, who deserves a long, healthy life. May God bless him.

He is great. Love fingers Felder.
He is such a lovely chap. A giver more than a taker!
My favorite Eagle; an example of a true gentleman!
I APPRECIATE WHAT HE'S DOING FOR THE CHILDREN.
I agree. Felder is way underrated. Without him, none of this would have happened. Everybody talks about Walsh's contributions to the album, which were considerable, but Felder's guitar playing and compositions defined the sound of Hotel California.
Without Don the Eagles ain't shit!
Such a Great Humanitarian.
makes music for the ones in need as a Therapist GOD BLESS HIM
If I could play the guitar like anybody in the world it would be like Don Felder. He has a unique sound.
He did have to split it (and all future Eagle's earning's) with his first wife. But he said she had every right to it & was happy to share it with her. She stayed home & raised his children and he really respected that. Now that's a nice guy
Still such a handsome man, and unbelievably NICE 😊
terrific Don !!

Seems like a great guy. Really makes Frey and Henley look like fools.
He's an incredible guy. So genuine and always is very kind
a calamity, the way Don Felder got treated by Don H and Glenn when he was fired in 2001..
they didn't make him filthy rich, he made them all rich cause he wrote Hotel California (the song)...therefore an awesome musician!
Great Interview. Thanks Shaw and Host.
what a classy guy. Don you rock
Hotel Califiornia is mostly his song. Lovely guy too, real gentleman.

Like his guitar techniques, and he is very handsome, and a great guy make it a great Sunday✌🏼😎😇😇❤️👠🎸
Don Felder rocks. Reading your book now (a few years late) - besides the eagles, Heavy Metal, All Of You. Great stuff.
Great fuckin musician. Great freakin guitar player... and fuckin cool dude.
don ,along with joe walsh, is my favorite eagle also guitar players

+Satya Iyer Do you mean 'Don Felder and David Gilmour'?
Not sure I have ever seen Felder talk before this. Seems very bright, articulate. A little surprised.
Rock on Don !!!!!!!!!!!!! From another North Florida picker !!!!!!!
Really enjoyed your book Heaven and Hell too....

Wow the "big blowup" with Frey was over Felder not wanting to do "freebies"(couldn't be the only reason) now he is doing it on his own.
Dan R I believe the issue you refer to (not the only sticking point by any means) was that Felder was not interested in political freebies, not freebies as such. I believe he has done a number of benefit shows, just not to fund politicians.

When Don F. Joined eagles they progressed into a supergroup!
agreee
It was his initial rock/country/southern sound that propelled them - FINGERS FELDER
Don is awesome. He could easily pass for a bigtime CEO type. You might not think he's a gifted guitarist from 70s band of decadent rock gods.
Yes the flute was very original indeed. A small indie band called eagles. We know who's side he's on, and I love it!!!!!
Great guy right there.

Felder is The EAGLE !
Not to mention he did the lead guitar on so many amazing songs like Too Many Hands and sick guitar solos (Except for the one of Hotel California)

She was sitting in a wheel chair holding a magazine that she always held, but never turned the page. I sat close to her and began doing "Can't Help Falling In Love" and she looked at me and put
Don Felder is a classy guy,and a legend in rock n roll to all his fans.
Very articulate and seems like a nice guy. Still doing some nice things too. (Canadian Music Therapy Trust)
I back that up 100%...I couldn't of said it better myself if I tried...and that seems to be the case with every band I've encountered. They are all group efforts...no one of the 5 should take the whole "cake." or whatever you call it. Paychecks, royalties, credits.
But you have to admit the Eagles is not the same without Felder. My wish is for them to reconcile somehow.....maybe one day.
i just wanna keep watching the beginning of the video....
A Really great musician
wasn't the "writer" he was a co-writer with Henley and Frey, He did come up with melody
A co-writer is a writer.
they wouldnt have the song idea without his melody input... give him due credit in a way he deserved...
He really was a huge jackass
great guy who is the real deal.
I read that book too, it's a nice book to recommend.
is there an audio book with Felder? could listen to him talking for hours
Hold the line...is your screen name the title of the old Toto tune? I always loved that song...

Master Guitarist
Legend
joe walsh was the ass for not defending his friend don felder he let frey and that other ass for treating don like shit he.s a hell of a guitarist
Joe Dez
Like I said, I think Joe was recruited by Glenn Frey and I think his first loyalty was with him.
Great hair for his age
when dealing with a Scorpio, there,s they always have some exitcitement up their sleeve, either for good or bad.
There are other example like All right Now of Free and Keep on a rocking me babe of Steve Miller with the same chords...tell me what you think.
eagles is not the same without Felder..
just my opinion- in order to have a great song you need good lyrics AND music. the reason the Eagles are so great isnt because of one of them. Don, Glenn and Joe all have had STELLAR solo careers. they ALL make the music great. not just one of them.
He`s a showman.. all classy and real down to earth.. reality is that he puts himself first..
Henley anrd Frey fired him cause he was greedy.
He would be nothing without them
He sells tickets for 20 bucks each when Henley and Frey can easily get 100 bucks a pop. do the math
and if the others don't agree, then heaven forbit them all, and not just this band, but every single band that I can think of, especially the most sold popular rock acts.
Yeah, that's right!
some one tell me why he left the eagels?
its a business people..Henley and Frey are buisness men..its not personal. They were the gist of the whole thing..so anyone who supported the movement should benefit...The concept of the Band is still brilliant..I also perform and write music..its important to come to agreement about the whole movement before one get started. At the end of the day people make music and people attend to the business of music..people are musicians..and its people who will decide your faith IN THE BUSINESS:
i dont understand how glen and henley make deals and reneg on bandmates and dont wanna honor the deal they made with felder. ok so they felt it wasnt a good deal so they get a jew to screw the bandmate after the deal was made huh? instead of just keeping their word...who am i telling this to? brats that rip off and lie cheat steal from close friends? really man what a drag to be in company with theives. frey n henley have stretched honor to pizzle n back
he wrote the chord...not the words
Schmidt didn't do a damn thing in the original Eagles but he makes bank now so he aint gonna complain, Joe Walsh is Joe Walsh with or without the Eagles, Leadon n Meissner got pushed out before and Felder after, all because they wanted input into a band they poured their lives into
he looks , talks and walks like andy summers
:)
he must be 63 yrs old here !!
03:30 BB King actually.
Fino como un gato de Angora.
