I have said this before in other videos but it is worth repeating. My wife and I saw Don Felder and his band at a small Indian Casino several years ago. There were 200 fans at most at that show. Felder and his band put on a show second to none. They played as if they were in a stadium of 80,000 fans. After the show, Don stayed on stage and signed autographs and allowed fans to have their photographs taken with him. He signed my show ticket. Don Felder is a class act. Thank you Don for a wonderful show.

I just saw Don a week ago in Niagara falls Ont. he was incredible "rocked leather pants at age 72" his voice blew me away, I'm no fool being a professional musician myself there was a little digital help (not sure what they were using on his voice but it doesn't fix everything) he still sounded great, his band was first class all top notch players ..his guitar playing ..well it's almost TOO good, so polished. He came up in a time when that was required to land a gig. so glad I got to see this Legend perform, he has quite a legacy ...May he keep on playing the Eagles were so foolish to let this man slip away

My mother and Don's mother both moved into the North Florida Retirement Village in Gainesville, FL at just about the same time. They became very good friends up until Don's mom passed away. I used to eat lunch with Doris and my mother and Doris would tell about Don and how he grew up in Gainesville, learned to play the guitar and became famous when he was with the Eagles. Don had given his mother, Doris, lots of his gold albums and she cherished them. When Don made trips to Paris, he would always bring back perfumes for his mother.
On a least two occasions, my mother got to have lunch with Don because he was at the retirement village to visit his mother.
I am 74 and loved, still love, the Eagles' music. Finding out from his mother and my mother what a great son he was just made me feel so good about him. I wish I had been there to have lunch with Don, his mom and my mom but I was an elementary school teacher and had zero time for such thrills.😁

Jus my 2 bits guys, but I think Hotel California would have been another song, maybe even sold & made popular by another artist. But it is too unforgettable to just disappear. Many great songs by great artists, started as mere warm up exercises. Like Dust in the Wind, KANSAS. Know any legendary others ? EVH ? Slash ? Bernie ostensibly didn't feel bitter nor pushed out by his friend Don. He always wanted to play different music, not Rock. A different Eagle wanted to be a "rock star" and stepped on his own brothers, just to try to make himself look bigger. Since the day Don Felder was pushed out, him and his cousin big shot, ended the "Eagles" after The Long Run & turned a legendary band into an echo tribute, for 40+ years now. Vince Gill & Joe Walsh are the unusual & true glue that holds the band together. Even Deacon didn't want to stick around the Toxicity of DH, who has now been caught lip syncing his own old studio tracks. "Heaven & Hell" indeed.

It was Henley and Frey who tried to create a false narrative about Felder being selfish and greedy. It was Henley and Frey that wouldn't perform or re group unless they got considerable more money than the other members. I lost a lot of respect for Don and Glenn for kicking Felder out of the band. He simply wanted to be included in all phases of the band but Henley and Frey wanted to be in sole control of the band. Felder later was able to sue The Eagles to the tune of around 50 million dollars, even though it was never publicized or disclosed the exact amount.

As in any other business, rock bands follow the golden rule: the ones with the gold make the rules. And particularly w rock bands, huge egos abound, even the guys wearing white hats have huge egos craving the limelight. It’s human nature. Really it’s a miracle the Eagles stayed together at all. If you think Felder wasn’t an egomaniac you’re wrong. Even the good guys have huge egos. There were ego conflicts that made the continuation with Felder and Frey together in one band untenable. Naturally, Frey would win that conflict, for Gods sake he was co-founder and co-CEO. Do you think he would get run off instead of Felder? Of course not. Happens everyday in business, popular guy gets terminated for taking too much attention away from the head honchos. Dog eat dog.

    My take:
1 - With no apologies to Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, Felder / Walsh at the end of Hotel California is the greatest duo guitar solo in the history of rock n roll.
2 - Felder's slide guitar in Good Day in Hell is second to none.
3 - If the Rock N Roll HOF ever has a jackoff wing Glen Frey and Don Henley should be in the initial class for their treatment of Felder and Meisner.

Don Felder is A Great Guitarist and Musician ,his versatility ,his natural touch on Guitar and knowledge of music theory is what put the icing on the cake for The Eagles .His guitar parts on them Records are Iconic in every sense of the word , and everything he played was completely musical and complementary to whatever tracks he played on , he also really new how to dial in a great Sound and Tone .. As a player myself he is someone (along with Joe Walsh) that always got my ears they had that guitar telepathy chemistry that sounds so great when it’s done right and they we’re Bang on the money together.. The Eagles could hire anyone after he went and Steuart Smith who replaced Don in The Eagles is a very capable player ,but they we’re never quite the same in my book without Don Felder he just had that magic as a player that you just can’t quite put your finger on let alone explain, He just had it in a similar kind of way that Mick Cambell from The Heartbreakers has (Another great Player) these kind of players are the real song server’s and that’s what makes music timeless and GREAT……❤️⭐️🌞👍🏻

Randy Meissner's leaving came when Frye wanted Randy to encore with laryngitis. I'll always believe Frye was just plain jealous of Don Felder. I realize Joe had to look out for himself, but I wish he had said something, anything, to help cool Frye's jets, if that was even possible. Frey & Henley were extremely toxic narcissists! Each of them thought they were superior to mankind yet each one knew the Eagles couldn’t exist without the other. That’s why they took their transgressions out on the other band members because they were all replaceable! When the big money started rolling in the two narcissists decided in their false reality that they were worth more than everyone else and Frey would make them miserable, with Henley’s help, until they broke down and quit and relinquished their rights to the band. Felder didn’t cave so they fired him and he was forced to sue for his fare share. When the Eagles got back together in the early 90’s the two narcissists decided since they had successful solo careers they were much more valuable and deserved a much larger cut. The thing about narcissist is they always deserve more than anyone else....but they always have a double standard because it was Felder’s song Hotel California that made them household names worldwide and I’m sure he didn’t get a bigger percentage of the revenue like Frey & Henley thought they deserved from their solo careers. I bet the song Hotel California made more money than Frey & Henley’s entire solo careers put together!!!

Just like Frey & Henley needed a scapegoat to break up the Eagles in 1980, they kind of needed one to blame so they could stand working with each other & both could point the finger of blame at him while saying I hate you to each other under their breath.. Frey felt like he was losing his band to Henley after Hotel California, and he was... Add Joe and Tim to the mix ( Both great singers ) That means less album space for Glenn to shine and it had to bug the living shit out of Frey that the president of your label is saying let Henley sing even more on the next album because we'll catch lightning in a bottle twice and have a Hotel California 2. And this made Frey hate Henley... Also when it comes down to it, it's morally and legally wrong to have a contract drawn up, made a legal document and signed by Eagles members at the time saying a part of this band is yours.. If you quit you forfeit your shares back to the remaining members, and when you reunite take that away from them like they did Felder.. At that point Frey, Henley & our satan Irving Azoff broke a legally binding contract... In 1980 Felder never quit the Eagles... The Eagles disintegrated.. That happened because Henley & Frey didn't have the balls to tell each other to fuck off and take a short break from the band.. The End.. Btw I got to see the Eagles during the Hell Freezes Over tour, at the Omni in Atlanta, July 17th, 1994.. And when Felder and Walsh started the dueling guitar outro i got goosebumps... Best concert I've ever seen and it's the best one I'll ever see... By far

Video is a great supplement to the fantastic Eagles documentary, which omits Felder's background. So blessed to have been saved from polio by the nascent vaccine.
Henley, Frey were it's driving creative force, yet both agreed to equal shares for all Eagles members. Foolish to take sides in conflict between band members. Only those with intimate first-hand knowledge can begin to understand the root issues. The political event seemed the climax of tension built over quite a while. Give Felder a lot of credit for not quitting, sticking up for himself, making the others fire him.
Eagles were a dynamo and the dynamic that produced numerous hit songs was ultimately the dynamic that tore them apart. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Henley and Frey are responsible for Eagles breaking apart. Their strong egos were partly the reason that they were so massively successful and mostly the reason that they crashed. I wouldn’t have been happy working with such abrasive personalities as theirs, but there can be no denying that they wrote some of the best songs ever recorded. I think it would feel very bittersweet to be a part of such a legacy. On one hand, the band was unquestionably a once in a lifetime phenomenon, being treated as godlike among the masses. On the other hand, the band belonged to Don Henley and Glenn Frey, and they were difficult to work with at best. I’d very much dislike having that pair of fantastic yet egotistical individuals looming over me as I tried to get inside of the project and appreciate the magnitude of the band’s status in the industry. In a way it may have been easier to deal with if Henley and Frey were just good at their craft, which would possibly leave the rest of the band with a little bit of leverage to tell them to go fly a kite. But the fact is those two were extraordinarily talented and working with them was going to produce absolutely top quality, world renowned results by default. Henley and Frey couldn’t write a terrible song if they tried to. Some artists are just like that by nature. Listening to the albums Hotel California and The Long Run is is analogous to taking a trip into the upper stratosphere of musical excellence. I’ll never become tired of listening to Sad Cafe, The Last Resort, New Kid In Town, Pretty Maids All In A Row, Try And Love Again, In The City, and so on. Those songs are sublime and are very well situated at the summit of musical achievement.

Don contributed two excellent songs to the soundtrack of the film “Heavy Metal” in 1980. They’re better than the stuff on Airborne.

Great mini doc on Don Felder. So well done. It covers a whole lot of history. The narration is really good too. Sadly, I never got to see him live with the Eagles but did see him put on a show in London a few years ago. A class act and awesome guitarist. Well worth seeing if ever in your area.

Obviously the in-fighting is legendary when it comes to the Eagles. Touring, drugs, success is a lot of pressure and often leads to that. I think they were all guilty at one time or another. The problem I've always had with their break up and all the other shit is how Joe Walsh has treated Don Felder. Joe and Don were really good friends and since has said nothing in support of Don. Maybe he knows where his bread is buttered, but still, not cool. Don arguably wrote the music for their biggest hit and one of the greatest songs of all time and deserves more respect than that.

I get where you're coming from on Joe. But still understand why he had to back off. Joe is still a "hired hand sideman" with the Eagles. Not knowing exactly how much but Don is still a part owner in the company. Joe would have been booted if he would have stuck up for Don and left flat. Don had that signed contract to fall back on..Joe had nothing. It was a bad situation for sure between two friends. Thanks for watching and your comment!

@@RiverDocs Have to point out that Joe did quite well with the James Gang and as a solo artist, it´s not like he would end up in the Poor House if he had been booted. I mean......"what is the price of friendship?" Correct me if I am wrong but was it not Don who got Joe into rehab? I call that being a good friend!

    • @RiverDocs
      @RiverDocs  Рік тому +1

@@markwarnberg9504 Well we are just going to have to agree to disagree. Don drove him to rehab, but anyone who goes to rehab and completes it like Joe did only goes because they want to,not because someone "gets" them to go...and Joe may have done well with the James Gang, but remember that was back in the late 60's very early 70's and you can't come close to comparing that to the money you are talking about that he made with the Eagles up to today..not even close. So again I understand the situation, and your side of it, but Joe did what he had to do to keep his job. Felder had the hammer on Frey and Henley with his contract..Joe had nothing. Even Felder said he understands this and doesn't hold it against Joe. And like I said we can agree to disagree on this point as I agree with what Joe did. I have a lot of friends but I can't think of any I would of gave up my job and retirement for, especially when they already had theirs under contract.

@@RiverDocs "Joe is still a 'Hired hand' to the Eagles". That is _exactly_ what Joe has said in several interviews. He apparently didn't care to get involved in personality problems. Seems like a good way to thrive in any job.
There are essentially ZERO pop bands who have ever stayed together before, during, and after their chart peak. Rolling Stones, a multi billion dollar corporation, hate each other. They have offices 13 floors apart. They don't play or record together without contracts and riders. "The Who", "CSN", and countless others, are similar. Ultra long living "The Moody Blues" have had several personnel changes. So has Genesis, Foreigner, the LA Philharmonic, and eleventy-gazillion CraigsList garage bands. Even the Beatles weren't the original lineup before they enjoyed their four years of charts.
Musicians are no different than doctors, lawyers, carpenters, fry cooks. They learn a skill, then they work at a job that generates income so they can buy a home and raise a family. It's not about four kids in a garage having fun. It's about a multi billion dollar corporation, with hundreds or thousands of employees. It's no more expectable for any musician to remain at this or that employer than it would be for you remain working at Taco Bell for the rest of your occupational life.
One argument point - I find it really hard to believe that Joe Walsh was working without a contract. That's really unheard of in the music industry, even for union scale gigs or less. Nobody in Hollywood goes to work for tens of millions of dollars, without a contract. The union, Joe's management agency, and the "Eagles LTD Corporation" would not allow it.

Don Felder MADE the Eagles what they are today, and without him, they were never the same band. Sure, Frey and Henley wrote the songs, but it was Felder's contributions that changed the entire direction of that band...now having said that, Felder made the fatal mistake, not Frey and Henley. There's a reason Walsh and Schmitt are still playing with that band and Felder is not. It's a sad story, but Felder made his bed...and now he gets to lay in it - alone. One of the most inventive, creative, successful, and fortunate guitar players in rock history, his good fortune was never enough for him, and that's what cost him the best gig in the music world...sorry to say...did he win in court?...sure, but what's that worth when the friendships, relationships, and business success are casualties? I loved the book Don, every time I hear the Eagles I think of how you helped them reinvent themselves and help take them to a whole new level...but damn dude...that's one hell of a price to pay.

Felder was always my favorite. From everything I've read and seen over the decades, the main psycho that always ruined everything was Henley. He was a control freak and greedy. I saw him in an interview not too long ago and he said he has 60 employees whose only job is to find any UA-cam post with their songs in any form to shut it down. Not even songs from them necessarily, but a kid playing an Eagles song he learned on guitar or someone compiling a top ten list of guitar licks or anything. What a total waste. He's literally keeping younger generations from discovering their music out of spite. There's a David Letterman clip where Dave said to Paul, hey play an Eagles song. They couldn't do it because even a snippet would cost $250,000. It's completely insane.
