It’s because the eagles had to blow that one little fight up to create the narrative that Felder caused the band to break up when in reality it was just Frey who wanted to be done
Don Felder was absolutely great as a guitarist and Don Henley and Glen Frey knew it. The guys were not looking for friends but rather they were looking for brilliant musicians. They meant business.
My personal theory is that Henley and Frey immediately (probably around their best selling Best of… from 1975) knew what they had at their hands and didn't wanted it to be wasted in a "normal" band setting and everyone who wanted that kind of band setting had to go. Henley thought high enough of Felder to offer him the chance to tour with him in his first solo band. Felder respectfully declined, and Henley even came back with the possibility of writing together in the future. He was totally fine w/Felder in the 80s. It was “Hell Freezes Over” when things got bad between them.
@@AdamDeanMusic I didn't know that about Henley's solo album invitation. I think the breakdown started when Felder questioned the new dynamic of the band when they all got back together. I think they both have some good points because Felder was an equal partner back in the seventies but definitely Henley and Frey and their catalog are what kept the band of float in the minds of everybody so that legacy is worth money. I won tickets to see the Eagles through a local radio station in Dallas in 2001.It was said to be the first concert at the new American Airlines Arena. I had seen them several times before including July 7th, 1977 at Tarrant County Convention Center, my first real concert. Reportedly it was the only North American (2001) show that year. I think I remember hearing they were on tour in Russia at the time. Have also seen Don Henley several times including one time with my future wife on July 9th, 1985. It was our first concert together. I'm pretty sure that is also the day I proposed. Also saw Glenn Frey once in 1987. Have also seen Don Henley at his 70th birthday show in Dallas (7/22/2017). Also saw Don Felder that summer also at whatever Starplex is called these days. The point of all of this rambling is that when they came out to play during the 2001 show all I could think about the whole time is "Where the hell is Don Felder"? Who is that skinny fucker playing his part and double neck guitar? I'm still up in arms about it 21 years later! Although I am primarily a metal-head, the Eagles are my favorite group, "Hotel California" is STILL my all time favorite song and album and Don Felder is STILL my favorite musician. And I understand why he didn't like to play for free. He grew up very poor with dirt floors at times. If you can believe "Heaven and Hell" and I do since I've never heard of it being contradicted.
On The Border is my favorite Eagles album, it seemed to be a hybrid between the acoustic music and the more rock oriented direction they wanted to go. The title track is awesome

For everyone who thinks Felder only wrote the progression to Hotel California. Here Glenn tells the truth instead of his 'untruth' in the History of the Eagles documentary.
It seems like the groups that get along best, and stay together the longest, are the ones that split the profits evenly between all members. Rush is an example of a group that does that, but there are a handful of others.
Always felt Frey was jealous of Felder's playing and arranging skills. Nice to hear them together here but we all know now the type of person Frey was. Biggest mistake ever of letting Felder go.
Glenn Frey was the leader of a band that has lasted 50 years and was so impactful that it continued strongly without him. He was also an incredible arranger, better than Felder, and not at all jealous. Glenn understood his strengths and accentuated those of others. I think that's pretty well understood by people who have spent even a second exploring their fanhood. If you think he was jealous, you have never even remotely bothered to learn anything about Glenn or the Eagles. There's a reason Glenn Frey was the frontman for the most successful American band of all time and why Don Felder is out auto-tune singing all of that band's songs instead of his own. I'll let you figure out what that reason is.
Good interview. Doesn't matter what anyone thinks, myself included, as what is done is done. However, I totally agree with Henley, there cannot be 5 leaders. It was Glenn and Don Henley's band to run. You don't like a job leave - plain and simple. It was a BUSINESS. All were talented. Each person offered their personal best.
