You're as aggressive as some car drivers, you want to travel safely, pedestrians want to travel safely. You make mistakes on the road, they make mistakes on the road. Chill and share the road. Us cyclists are keen to point out and prosecute inpatient aggressive drivers yet some of us act like this

I'm a cyclist. Cycled for a many years in London. I still cycle. I'm a bit embarrassed by this guy. He's arrogant. He probably does more harm than good to the cause of cycling.
Agreed, if there's a pedestrian in the cycle lane then you don't alter your course and try and ride into them. It's about road safety not teaching people a lesson.
I was thinking the same. So many people wanting to cross the road, with very few crossings. I drove a lorry in London for years, and most cyclists were no problem. But there were the odd few that seemed to think that the road belonged to them.
I am a regular commuter cyclist and i totally agree, hes riding along encouraging and making problems where there doesnt need to be any. There were a couple of incidents where id take his side, but generally he was ranting over nothing and making a mountain out of a mole hill.
I think it *is* (partly) about teaching people a lesson - they wouldn't wander around the road with cars whizzing past them - discipline and courtesy by all.
In the Netherlands i hardly have such problems in the bicycle. The problems and irritations you experience are mainly due to your own lack of insight and lack of patience. Be a little more patience en relax and most of the problems will solve by there own.

Rule 170 of The HIGHWAY CODE: Take extra care at junctions. You should watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way
I do, and give way if that happens. Before crossing however the pedestrian has to follow rule 7, look, if traffic is coming let it pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. In most of the instances in my videos I’ve already started my turn when the pedestrian walks out without looking. They have responsibility too!

@@DominicPannell It’s a bit chicken and egg, but when these pedestrians walk out in front of you without looking, you can’t just vanish. You’re now in a position of emergency stop plus shouting a warning or ringing a bell. Once one pedestrian goes the rest tend to blindly follow so you need to alert them too. Just need for people to be aware of cycles and to look first to prevent this. They can’t complain about being scared by a cyclist when they walked out without looking and caused the situation.
Ok. As a cyclist who encounters this a lot on my local cycle paths. I agree that pedestrians are a menace. And need to raise awareness on shared/cycle paths. But you also need to be a bit more patient. Some of those people can’t react fast enough and you’re yelling at them. If you did that to certain people you would get a clump. And some of the speeds you’re pulling are a bit excessive for built up areas. Regardless what the limit is. If it’s busy cars have to slow down. I’m not getting at you personally. Just a few observations. Like I say I too am a cyclist 🚵♂️
Unfortunately this sort of thing happens extremely frequently during rush hour in London. Many pedestrians effectively pay chicken with cyclists. If they think that you will stop, they will walk out. So there's an element of giving the impression that you're asserting your right of way, even though (as you see in the video) I'm always ready to stop if necessary. I typically don't shout to people now that I have an electric horn. My GoPro is chest mounted, and the mic is only an inch or so below my mouth so whilst you can hear me swearing on the video, it's rarely loud enough for the people ahead of me to hear. Other than the occasional dangerous car driver, I've never stopped to admonish people after the act. I take the point, would be nice just to cruise along, waving people by. The reality is that I need to get to work, and there are millions of pedestrians trying to get to or from work, so they just keep coming unless you hold your ground. Happy new year.

@Tomas Aindrias Mac Unfraidh Only when they change the speed limit to 5mph for all vehicles. The cars are driving on the same roads at 20-30mph, and present far more danger. So you just drive your car at 5mph through towns as your so concerned. 👍
This is shocking cycling. The highway is a shared space and as a regular cyclist I always recognise this and give space to other road users...especially pedestrians . This cyclist is dangerous and rude.
Live and let live. Don't try to compete with motorist's aggression. Cycle lanes with broken white lines are not mandatory. They are advisory and therefore shared space.
They are "advisory" but only in the sense that a motorist can cross it if absolutely necessary and its safe to do so (like there isn't a friggin' cyclist in it) Not in the sense its optional. Besides the issue was the driver was on the phone.
@@LordSandwichII Yes if the lane is truly clear, which includes anything close enough to be effected by your actions. The trouble is most motorists think that anything not in front of them is of no concern. Fixing one bad situation caused by another (like being squeezed) by creating a bad situation for someone else is not acceptable. I assume you are taking about the incident at 2:17 the entrance to Putney Bridge. In that case the white car (and the white van behind) should not be there (as you dont enter a box junction without a clear exit when going straight) nor should they be side by side as the junction and bridge is a single lane, the white car was not put in that situation by the grey van, they put themselves in it by trying to clear a junction when they did not have the time or space to do so.
It’s a two lane road. I’m in the left lane, the van is in the right lane. When I’m overtaking the cyclist I’m still in the left lane, the van still in the right lane and is not indicating. Only when I’m already alongside the cyclist, does the van start to indicate that it wanted to change lane. When you want to change lane, you have to check that lane is clear before you do so, traffic already in that lane has priority. So here the van driver should have waited until the left hand lane was clear. Not just pull over and squeeze the cyclists out if the way. Exact same if it was a car in the left lane alongside. The driver is the one who should have waited a second. Understand?
Taxi at 1.48 indicated and then you decided to try and undertake. I think you caused the 'near miss' by not adjusting your speed but it's hard to tell from a video. I think motorists should experience being on a bike and vice versa... Do you drive a car?

You should know by now you have to have a bit of give and take in London traffic. Slow down, learn to anticipate and ve more defensive than agressive. Life will be happier.
And that is exactly why you don't see me colliding with anyone, and haven't for over 11 years now. My average speed is 15mph, well below speed limits. If only others would have done if the aforementioned give and take towards cyclists (I'll settle for people just looking before walking into the road) then it would be far more harmonious. 😉

@@jimgoodwin6294 Just because some cyclists run reds, doesn't mean that all do Jim. It's very easy to stop and wait at lights, I plus the majority of cyclists follow the rules of the road. Whilst I see plenty of pedestrians walking out without looking, or driver's playing with their phones whilst driving, I acknowledge that most follow the rules. It's just a few idiots that ruin it for everyone else.

Unfortunately, when people walk out into the road under a red man I not only sound my horn to make them aware of my presence, but also to warn the cyclists behind me of the hazard. This is so that they don't cycle into the back of me, or pass me and collide with the pedestrian. Unfortunate situation all around, I wish people would follow the crossing rules and look and check the road is clear before crossing.

Will, that's exactly what I was thinking. Get a flat bar city bike, chill out and enjoy the ride. Must be very stressful all those near misuses. Londo is full of tourists not used to our traffic, they will mess up. Time accept this and make concessions. Keep safe👍

Highway code says "As a driver, you MUST give way to any pedestrians on the crossing, when the amber light is flashing" Did you do that especially at 1:28? Amber light was flashing with people on the crossing & you were cycling forward.
Amber light wasn't flashing, it was solid, also I did not cross the line on the crossing until it was green. So I'm fully compliant. The pedestrians had a red man, but as they saw the cyclists waiting they crossed regardless. Not a big problem in this case, but it shows a common behaviour of pedestrians in London who completely disregard the lights and put themselves in a compromising position.

I see to many cars, moterbikes & cyclists shouting/beeping at peeps when the pedestrians still have right of way if the lights change when they're half way across. The point I was trying to make is that some of those people were already on the crossing when your light was still on red & you were moving towards them which I feel was wrong. Point taken that you only crossed the line when it went green. Be safe out there

I've been a bit shocked by antics south of London Bridge, cyclists absolutely flying through red lights, and you can see pedestrians looking for them when the lights are green. And I don't mean going through 1/2 seconds late, I mean totally ignoring solid reds that have been there for some time.
Yes, it's very annoying when stupid, clueless pedestrians leap out in front of you or wander around in the middle of the road/cycle lane. But I still think you could cycle more cautiously, and allow more time where you can see a potential incident up ahead. That or get a jousting spear with a cattle prod on the end.
In the London rush hour there are literally millions of people commuting into the city centre, so at all times there’s always a potential incident ahead. I have to get to work, so I have to make progress whilst always being ready to take avoiding action. So cattle prod it is then! 🤣👍🏻
No, I was riding down a cycle lane when those pedestrians ignored the red figure on the crossing and walked out in front of me without looking. I can’t just vanish into a puff of smoke just because some pedestrians couldn’t be bothered to look or wait. I have to slam on the brakes and try and guess which way they’ll go to avoid them. It’s super simple, if you’re going to cross a road then look to see if anything is coming first, and if you have a red figure at a crossing then it’s safer to wait.
Its because he went in the direction his eyes where looking , not where his unobstructed route was. Indicating he is a menace on the road. A road hog, dangerous to himself and others. He neglects to have forward planning and ignores hazards on the road developing in front of him because of his own overarching sense of entitlement that he is on the road on his bike and everyone else should be getting out of his way. As this was filmed some time ago he may have squashed by something by now. Who knows?

In a lot of these, I'm in a cycle lane, not a road. However the code is referring to not beginning a turn into a road of there are already pedestrians in it. If you take the road junction at 0:41 for example, there is nobody in the road as I start my turn, I'm past the apex of the corner when the woman starts to walk out on me. At that point I'm fully committed to the turn, I can't just disappear into a puff of smoke for her convenience! Your extract from the code is not relevant here. Have a look at the rules for pedestrians when crossing a road, especially the part that says that pedestrians must first look, and let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. Your rule is relevant at the point I started my turn, and there was nobody in the road so I'm all clear. At the point the lady walks out I am very much oncoming traffic, so she falls foul of the code.
I commute at 7 am from mile end to parliament sq on the super highways and it's brilliant then, nothing but bikes. But going the other way at 5pm I did once and never again. Because the tourists are everywhere as in your video. You are in the right in most of the instances but being technically right is not quite enough in this crazy city.
Parliament Square is certainly a hot spot, it's always a slow crawl through there. Lots of tourists who are unaccustomed with UK traffic rules and signals. Cycle safe.
My average speed on my commute is 15mph, I'm rarely over 10mph in the pedestrian heavy areas. I'm slower than the cars in those areas which pose far more threat to pedestrians. The highway is not a park for pedestrians to stroll around obliviously in!

@@gaelicd8328 The Judge ruled that 50:50 blame despite the cyclist following the rules, and the lady ignoring them. If the cyclist had launched a counter claim at the start he would never have had to pay. That was his mistake.
@Colin Gregson What is rude is to not look before stepping out into the road, directly into the path of a moving vehicle. This is both stupid and selfish.
Because I'm aware and cycle at an appropriate speed is why my videos are full of misses, and not accidents. I have no desire to be in an accident and cycle with my fingers on the brakes at all times. I'm not distracted by my phone or music etc, I'm paying full attention on my commute.

What does is the fact that I avoided all incidents in this video because I'm sensible, in control of my bicycle and am looking where I'm going. I'm very aware that it's London, I live here. When I go abroad I always take extra care on the roads of somewhere I'm not used to. I take personal responsibility for my actions. The vast majority of counties have road safety awareness courses, it's fair to say that most adults understand that roads are dangerous. So being a tourist is no excuse. I'm most likely to come off worse in a collision so it's not just themselves they are putting at risk. It's not a big ask for people to look before walking into the road. We expect small children to understand that when they are taught road safety at junior school, adults should be able to grasp it also!
No reason cyclist cant go at a reasonable cycling speed, which is around 10 to 18mph. If people can look both ways for a car, which travels quite a bit faster, why cant they have the same situational awareness for cyclists?
At 57 when the lady helps an elderly man to cross the road..I regularly have to stop traffic to help my arthritic mother in law over the road. Never has a driver abused me...you are conducting a vehicle and since you are aware ( and thus not surprised) by pedestrians stepping out, you cannot use their foolishness in your defence if you hit one apparently on purpose. When you grow up, you will perhaps learn some tolerance. Unless you abuse a man who is stronger than you... and beats you up.
I suspect Sir that you are wise enough not to walk your mother out on the red man. And you likely indicate to the traffic your intention to cross before you do so. I stopped a long way back from this couple, no where near to colliding with them. I sounded my horn to warn the 20 cyclists behind me of the hazard, so that they didn't cycle into the back of me, pass me and collide with the pedestrians. The lady started shouting at us I stayed because I sounded my horn. All a very unfortunate situation caused by the lady not waiting for the green man. When I take my 92 year old grand mother out, she is very slow. I always wait for the green man, and check all traffic has stopped before leading her across the road. That's the duty of care this lady did not show.

May or may not be technically "in the right" in a lot of these cases, but what is clear is that you are overly aggressive and have terrible anticipation. Yes, some pedestrians are morons, but we have always known that, you need to ride accordingly.
My anticipation is what prevents these being incidents, and you are mistaking my desire to push on and not be held up, for aggression. If I see someone who I think may step out on me, I don't stop and sit on the pavement until they are passed. Whilst that would be lovely, I've got to get to work and don't have time to keep doing that every five minutes. I see the potential incident, I make necessary adjustments so that I can stop if necessary, then I try and keep going. Often, when the pedestrian sees that you mean to keep going, they will back off. A lot of the pedestrians are trying their luck, trying to force the cyclist to stop even when the rider had the right of way. If they see that you're not intimidated then they wait.
I think you are in the wrong too. You are far too aggressive with pedestrians. As a car driver you get pedestrians doing this as well all the time, you can't just go around blowing your horn at them, the have to anticipate them and make allowances for them. In a lot of these case I would have stopped my car to let them cross in their own time, especially the elderly couple you bullied off the road. It may have been your right of way but you have to be sensible yourself. End of the day if you are ten minutes late for work, it better than you or someone else getting injured or losing their life so just take your time.
The “I need to get to work” excuse is not valid for car drivers so why should it be valid for cyclists? Leave ten minutes earlier. Clearly many of these pedestrians were in the wrong but there was an elderly couple who needed more consideration. Some of these pedestrians may have hearing or sight difficulties. Also when the traffic lights change in your favour you are free to proceed only if the way is clear.
I cycle confidently, well below the speed limits. As a cyclist in London you're treated as bottom of the food chain unfortunately, if you don't cycle assertively then you'll get walked over.

I signal when necessary, like at 41 seconds. I wait at the red lights, so the pedestrians you see have the red man and should be waiting. They don't have the green otherwise I would be stopped. Why is your view that I'm cycling at them, rather than they walking out on the cyclist? Highway Code states that you must wait for a gap before pulling out, you'll fail your driving test if you pull out into a road and force the oncoming traffic to slam on the brakes. So yes, the Chelsea tractor should have waited, the driver is wrapped in two tonnes of steel and it's "only" a cyclist coming so why wait! Is that your attitude when driving? I have brakes too, which is why my compilations are full of misses despite others ignoring the rules. If as a cyclist you wait for every single person or vehicle that wants to ignore the rules then you'll never get anywhere, probably would be better off on the bus. It's a shame that you have to hold your right of way when you have it, but that's how it is. I'd far rather everyone took their turn, but they don't unfortunately.

@@acericoniadak My max speed on my route (all flat) is approximately 25mph, still below the speed limit. At 0.45, in the bottom left you can see my knee, it's still as I'm coasting around the corner. You are incorrect, I was not speeding up. At 1.11 I'm coasting again, well below the speed limits. I'm slowing whilst I find a gap through the pedestrians who are ignoring the oncoming traffic. So you're incorrect again. I'm not in beach of any speeding or other road rules.
Ryan Sedgwick The fact that people comb your videos hoping for one bit where you are at fault is funny. It shows such a strong bias against cyclists, (or you personally) that the people are certainly not worth arguing with logically. But, your responses may educate an unbiased observer. Happy Xmas!
Love riding in London, as long as you look ahead and have a good level of safety and anticipate it’s all good. I was knocked down in the Walworth Road years back and it did take the edge off my confidence and I stopped being so risky-going through red lights, up the inside of lorries etc.. . I got my full motorcycle license last year and that’s given me a greater appreciation of awareness and safety around other road users. I automatically do shoulder checks now when changing direction on my bicycle or when setting off, which I was a bit casual about before on my bicycle . I cycle everyday still and it’s great way to commute and to see London. Ride safe 😊

The funny thing is that you could post the same video but from a car drivers perspective - because the problem appears to be the same - cycling/driving would be great if it wasn't for every other road user getting in your way.
@Saif Chowdhury That is a very hard job, especially trying to negotiate those giant vehicles around small roads when you're tired and on a deadline. The problem I mainly have is that pedestrians walk out in front of me, either without looking, or see me but don't care. If I collide with them I'll likely end up in hospital, plus they'll likely sue me despite it being them ignoring the traffic signals or rules of the road. I suspect such people would think twice about walking out in front of your lorry. Keep safe.
Pedestrians should not start to cross when there is a red man, as per the Highway Code: "At traffic lights. There may be special signals for pedestrians. You should ONLY start to cross the road when the green figure shows." And: "Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings operated by pedestrians. Push the control button to activate the traffic signals. When the red figure shows, DO NOT CROSS." The Highway Code also outlines general crossing rules that state that, before crossing Pedestrians must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (the road traffic has priority) then wait for a safe gap before crossing. Regardless, you did not see me clattering into these pedestrians as, unlike them, I'm looking where I am going and following the rules.

@stinkydog dogstink No, as I've outlined above, the obligation is on the pedestrian to wait at the red man, or if there is oncoming traffic. The law is that I have to wait at a red light, which I do. It's pretty simple system of taking turns depending of whether you have red or green. Don't defend people who ignore this simple system. You won't see me defending cyclists who run red lights! All parties have a duty to avoid an accident, which I did.
As a fellow cyclist, you're being an arse. If you want to cycle at full tilt the whole time, get out on the open road. Same rules for everyone on the road in London, be it cars, trucks, bikes or pedestrians, give way and be respectful. Easier said than done sometimes I have to admit....
I'm not cycling full tilt, my average speed on my commute is 15mph and I'm rarely above 10mph in the heavily pedestrianised areas. You're quite right about the rules, the Highway Code states that before crossing the road you must, stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. These rules apply to everyone even if the oncoming traffic is "only" a cyclist. It's a shame more people don't respect that. Safe cycling. 👍

As the light goes green I'm trying to clip in to my other pedal and the lady walks into my front wheel, nearly knocking me off. You can see her daughter try and grab her to stop her from crossing there. There's 3 lanes of road traffic the other side of the cycle lane there, you can't cross there. The lady should be crossing at the lights you see ahead, she was too impatient to do so. As well as nearly knocking me off by walking into my front wheel, she also nearly gets wiped out by the cyclist passing on my right. So yes, I told her to get out of the way. A very foolish action by that lady.
I am very aware when I cycle, hence these are all misses. I only wish that others were as careful. It's no secret that roads have fast moving traffic and that's why the Highway Code sets out that you must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing.
There is an important principle that the most vulnerable person has right of way. I am a regular cyclist myself,but you seem more concerned about trying to set a personal best time than safely cycling. You need to chill out and be respectful of all other road users.
Speed through London is dictated by the traffic, and how you catch the lights etc. There's zero point in trying to set a best time. I'm concerned with getting to work and back in a decent time, traveling within the speed limit and conditions. Respect works both ways, when I'm a pedestrian I look before crossing the road, and if I see a cyclist I wait. Especially if the lights are showing me a red man. That's a small bit of respect that costs nothing, and yet is routinely ignored by many on my morning commute.
I've seen fixie riders passing through traffic safer and probably faster than you, just by going with the flow. I know, that in a lot of cases you are in the right. You try to warn people by sounding your horn, but it actually creates a lot of unwanted situations. The trajectories of pedestrians are easier calculated. The moment you sound the horn, they have to realize, analyze and react. It all costs time and the decisions coming out of it are more often than not, not the wisest ones. Maybe try using your horn, when you think it's an potential emergency situation and rather choose your gap, when not.
If a car driver drove like these cyclists ride they would with out doubt be prosicuted for dangerous drivng. Time now for number plates and Insurance maybe a test even on these lethal devices, because Cyclists hide behind anonymity.
Consider rule 7D, 18 and 21 of the Highway Code, and then consider how pedestrians constantly ignore these! Most of the time they see the cyclist and just don't care, trying to bully us out of their way rather than waiting as they should. Rule 170 only applies when turning into a side road, and in my video where there were pedestrians in the road I slowed and gave way. You didn't see me bouncing off anyone did you! At 0.41 in the video I've signalled and am already around the corner when the lady walks out. We're past rule 170 as she wasn't in the road when I started turning, we're very much into rule 7D in that she has to stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap!

I have used the streets of London as cyclist commuting from Croydon to Central London for 27 years, as a bus driver back in the eighties, as a Firefighter for 27 years up until 2013 and since then a black cab driver. I have taken numerous advanced driving courses and I can tell you every one of the instructors I had, if asked "when do pedestrians have priority", would have said "always" If a screen zombie stagers into the road in front of you without warning and you collide with him/her maybe you could have anticipated better, but you can't really be blamed. If as in your videos you see them in plenty of time and yet instead of stopping you shout at them, then you are in the wrong. I see that your anticipation is generally excellent, however the other key rule of safe use of the road is to secretly understand that every incident is your fault.

The point of my videos is that if everyone looks out for each other, and takes their turn at the lights, or in accordance to the Code then it'll be much nicer for all. As cyclists unfortunately we are bottom of the list unfortunately, with a large number of pedestrians and drivers not being aware of, or looking out for us. I take your point, but I'd phrase it differently. In the case where a pedestrian should have given priority, and didn't and walks into the road, then as a road user you absolutely have a duty to avoid an accident. I wouldn't however say that the pedestrian now has priority across all lanes because they are in the road. I would say that the pedestrian, once aware they have not identified oncoming traffic, now has a duty to return to the pavement via the shortest and safest route possible. If they are halfway across then they should complete their crossing, however if they are one step into the road and they hear a shout from a cyclist, or a honk from a vehicle then they should step back onto the pavement and wait for a safe gap. I do my utmost to be fully aware, fingers on the brakes etc so that I can always stop. I have no desire to collide with anyone. And I achieve that but there is a limit to that where someone can step out right in front of you beyond the limit of brakes or reaction time. If I see someone start to cross when they shouldn't I shout, in the hope that they will step back onto the pavement, or if they are in the road they will speed up which will reduce the risk of a collision if I can't slow in time. The second reason I shout is typically, if one pedestrian goes for it the other 20 who were waiting tend to follow, especially during rush hour. It's just to make them aware of my presence. Other than maybe once or twice in the 14+ years of cycling to work I don't stop to argue with or lambast the pedestrians. It's just a yell the same way they'd get a honk from a car if they walked out on it. I did use an electric horn for a while but prefer to shout. You say you drove a black cab for a while. You'll note that black cabs are never in the incidents in my videos because the drivers are always really good around cyclists. I can't say the same about Uber drivers who spend their time looking at their sat-nav rather than the road!

If I see you on the road I'll give you a wave.Just remember if you ever find yourself in court for knocking a pedestrian over. The pedestrian is more likely to win. An average of 15mph for that journey probably means a maximum a bit in excess of 30 mph, a bit quick for my old reactions. Stay safe.
@@simonfriedlander4832 Thank you, I'll do that. 🙂👍 The bike I ride now only has one gear, so I can't get much over 20mph. 2/3rds of my trip is along the embankment where it's open and there are little to no pedestrians, can consistently get up to 20mph+ along there. Between Blackfriars bridge and my office (just past St Pauls), and also the King's road between Putney Bridge and Cheyne Walk tend to be the hot spots for pedestrians so have to slow a lot through those areas. Agree with you on how the courts will look at it, thankfully I'm older and slower now with a slower bike so hopefully less risk now. Although my reactions are slower too! 😉 Under lockdown I'm cycling around Richmond Park each morning for exercise which is much more chill. Just the odd deer to watch out for! Take care. 🙂👍
I used to ride just like this. And I almost gave myself a heart attack from all the stress and anger from every single ride. And then.. I realized that most likely this is how car drivers feel about cyclists. Not saying every cyclist is a clueless moron that rides out into danger but there definetly is a lot of those. So instead, in order to save my heart, I started always giving pedestrians more space.
It’s a balance in Central London rush hour, there are literally millions of pedestrians all rushing into work, but you need to make progress yourself and they’ll never wait for you. So it’s a balance of holding your ground to an extent, but always being ready to stop in an instant.

Only when a driver turning into a side road, and a pedestrian has already started to cross should the driver give way. There is no blanket rule that backs up your statement. Pedestrians should either use the crossings, otherwise they must abide to rule 7 of the Highway Code. I suggest you read that, specifically rule 7D which states that if traffic is coming, pedestrians must let it pass, then wait for a safe gap before crossing. I have read the Highway Code many times, I don’t think you have. Best get your facts straight before making such a comment. 🙂👍🏻

In the same way if a pedestrian deliberately ran into a cyclist, knocked them off and injured them they’d be liable in a court of law. That’s very different from saying pedestrians always have right of way. Hence why your initial statement is not backed up in the Highway Code.
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 I think you will find if you look back at clip, an awful lot of incidents of dangerous cycling were where the bike was turning on to another road when the pedestrian was already crossing, so, breaking the highway code. Also lots of other incidents where the lights were on red then changed to green while pedestrians already crossing. Once again dangerous cycling. The trouble is with you cyclists you think you can do exactly what you like on the roads.

The pedestrians however are ignoring the Highway Code which states do not start to cross when the red figure is showing. It had been showing for a fair while before the lights changed. But we know you think the Highway Code only applies to cyclists. 😉👍🏻
At first it looked like you were in the right, but as the video went on it transpires you are a menace to some of these people who cannot react very fast due to their age or other circumstances. You need to change your way of thinking and your way of cycling. After watching all the video I think that it's 50/50 right/menace
I wish that people would honour the lights and crossing rules. Especially if you are older and have shower reactions, waiting for the green man, or a safe gap before crossing is the best way to be safe. Roads in London during rush hour are busy, that's no secret. As a cyclist if you pootle along, waving everyone else through (eyesight when it's green for traffic) you just get a torrent of abuse and horns from the traffic behind you.

@@xavierbourguignon37220 Agreed, in the real world this always happens. This is why I cycle with my fingers on the brakes at all times, pay full attention and follow the rules myself. In the real world you also have to expect that cyclists will be traveling along the road at 15-20mph. Many comments on here don't seem to accept that. When someone steps out in front of me I can't vanish. I have to brake, sometimes sound the horn to warn both the pedestrian in the road plus the cyclists behind me (as they may not have seen the hazard past me). That's not being a menace, that is the realistic result of a chain of events caused by the person who had ignored the rules. There may be cyclists for him it's their first time in London, or who don't know or care about the rules, so pedestrians have to take responsibility also.
Scaring the #hit out of an old man with a walking stick while being helped across the road is utterly deplorable. Cyclists like you should show more respect to pedestrians or get off the road.
Unfortunately the woman with him had walked him out on the red man into danger. My horn was less for him and more to warn the cyclists behind who were unsighted. Because I had seen him and slowed does not mean that another cyclist behind (whose view I'm blocking) won't pass me and collide with the pedestrian. It was an entirely avoidable situation, when I take my 91 grandmother out I'm very careful with road crossings because she needs plenty of time. This woman started to cross under a red when traffic was oncoming at speed. So yes, me and the other cyclist in the front did make a lot of noise to avoid anyone colliding with them, but it was a situation caused by the woman who then got very angry about it.
I dont know about you. But i am always prepared to run out of moving traffic’s way when i cross on red. I think it’s a bit hard for an old man with walking stick to do that, so stick with green man.

The highway code is very clear that pedestrians should not start to cross under the red men, which is what these people did. Regardless, the cyclists waited for man and lady here to cross. The horn was more to warn the cyclists behind me so that they didn't slam into the back of me as I braked (or zip past me and collide with the pedestrians), also to warn the old man and lady that they were in danger.
Remember a cyclist was recently prosecuted after colliding with a pedestrian, heavily fined even though the pedestrian clearly was at fault. I believe the judge's ruling was based on vehicles have a high responsibility and the bigger and heavier, the more responsibility. Message, we need to protect ourselves from numpties on foot and behind the wheel.
Yes, I read about that case, and spoke to the cyclist involved. The judge ruled that blame was 50:50, despite the pedestrian being the party that broke the rules (by ignoring the red man). The judge argued that, as the pedestrian was "established" in the road the cyclist should have stopped. He had moved to go around the pedestrian but she changed direction and jumped back into his path. They were both knocked unconscious. She launched a chain against the cyclist. However the cyclist didn't launch a claim against her (as he doesn't like the claim culture). However this was a mistake, as there is a cut off for doing this. Had he had a counter claim, the 50:50 ruling would have meant it netted off and he wouldn't have had to pay damages. Also he didn't have insurance which would also have limited the claim he'd have to pay. Off the back of this, I now have got insurance.

You need to understand, as the 'cycle lane' has a broken line, other vehicles can enter it if they want. If the cycle lane has a solid line, then cars etc cannot enter it.
Incorrect, cars are only allowed to enter a broken line cycle lane if "unavoidable". Not just so they can get past someone. I've put the text from the highway code below: Rule 140 Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply. Regardless of this rule, if you are going to pull into another lane, be it a cycle lane or another road traffic lane, you still have to look and check that it is clear before doing so. You shouldn't just pull across without looking and cut others up or you risk an accident. Do you understand that?

If the highway code said 'You MUST NOT drive in a cycle lane with a broken line unless unavoidable' then that would be very different.
@@254_aw If you take the time to read it, it says "Do not"! If you are going to pull into another lane, you have to check that it's clear first. The drivers you see in my video did not do this. Rule 133 If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and if necessary take a quick sideways glance to make sure you will not force another road user to change course or speed. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear, move over.

This includes rules which use advisory wording such as ‘should/should not’ or ‘do/do not’.

The one rule I always TRIED to follow cycling in London for 10 years was to always position myself either at the front or back of a vehicle and not beside. I got cut off once really badly with a driver turning left and cutting me off to the point I slammed on my brakes and almost went over the bars. I realised there and then I would get killed so easily in that situation. It's not always possible, but with this rule I managed to stay alive. My go-to line for pedestrians in a bike lanes was to stop and exaggeratedly exclaim, "nice bike"! They would say, "what bike"? And I would answer, "exactly, so get out of the f**king bike lane"!

Just as cyclists say it's not illegal to ride on the road, even when there is a cycle lane provided, it is not illegal for pedestrians to walk on the cycle lane even when there is a footpath provided.

@@amberkhan7162 Yes, stupid comment illustrating how stupid it is to walk in a cycle lane when there’s a perfectly decent pavement available. Cyclists typically use cycle lanes where available, however many roads don’t have cycle lanes, and even when there is a cycle lane there are many reasons why cyclists will leave them. If you need to turn right up ahead you need to leave the cycle lane to get into the right hand lane for example. Hence why there are many rules for motorists to take care around cyclists. 🙂👍🏻

The education system also teaches us all, as children, how to cross the road. Simple things like looking, waiting for a gap before crossing etc. Yet there are many apologists like yourself who excuse those who ignore all crossing rules, as long as it's perpetrated on cyclists of course. Such people would be cross at their children if they walked out into busy motor traffic, and would honk their horn if someone jumped out in front of their car whilst driving. It's all just fine if it's done to a cyclist though, they deserve it, it's their fault for being on the road. And if a cyclist has the gall to highlight how they were actually following the rules, paying attention and prevented an incident, and how the pedestrian has ignored all of the rules, not looked, not given any regard for the oncoming cyclists, that seems to make people like you even angrier. Highway code, give way to pedestrians who are crossing the road and who have started to cross. Applies to bicycles as well as cars. If they are in 'your' lane, you have no right to charge towards them to teach them a lesson. Drivers often do it too, and it is wrong. I know it's frustrating, but that space in front of you doesn't belong to you.
That section of the highway code that you are quoting refers to turning into a side road when a pedestrian has already started to cross before you turn. Not relevant here. When on a straight bit of road the highway code rules for pedestrians crossing state: B Stop just before you get to the kerb, where you can see if anything is coming. Do not get too close to the traffic. If there’s no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road but make sure you can still see approaching traffic. C Look all around for traffic and listen. Traffic could come from any direction. Listen as well, because you can sometimes hear traffic before you see it. D If traffic is coming, let it pass. Look all around again and listen. Do not cross until there is a safe gap in the traffic and you are certain that there is plenty of time. Remember, even if traffic is a long way off, it may be approaching very quickly. Look at point "D", if traffic is coming, let it pass. This means that the road traffic has right of way. The pedestrians should not start to cross until they have a safe gap. This is what I encounter daily, pedestrians not looking, not seeing oncoming traffic and waiting for it to pass and not waiting for a safe gap.
Oh, so if it is not a side road then continue at full speed and vent your frustration by 'teaching them a lesson'. No. Their wrong doesn't justify your wrong. @@foresthorizons I'm just clarifying the Highway Code rule you quoted as you've used it out of context. Unfortunately, when cycling in London you have to be assertive to make progress. I frequently encounter pedestrians who refuse to wait for cyclists and try and force me to stop for them when the rules say that they should wait. So it's a bluff, I hold my ground so that they think I won't stop, and typically they decide to wait or clear the road. It is a bluff, I won't collide with anyone. I'd far rather it wasn't that way but that's the reality.
I do not class myself as a cyclist anymore, just a guy who found in cycling a suitable alternative of mobility when possible like many others who still class as cyclists untill the day they realise they actually aren't, that's it.
Myself, I pretty much only commute on the cycle. Sometimes do a lap around the park with a friend on a weekend but that’s it. My cycle is primarily used for commuting for work. I don’t know if there are different classes of cyclist. 🤣

Pedestrians only have right of way at designated crossings and they are obliged to use them as they are intended, like not crossing on a red man, or crossing without looking, or crossing "because its only a cyclist" like the zombies in this video.

gotta say, i think those tweeting alarm sounding horns you have really confuse people. It's like a disorienting surprise sound, rather than a solid beep or even a recording of a honk. I was in a big ride recently and someone had that style beeping behind me, i thought it was his phone chirping some notifications for about half the ride!
I had the same thought. It was only on about the third clip that I realised it was the equivalent of his bell. I think I would have something that sounds like a car horn. If I was crossing the road without looking and I heard a car horn, it would get my attention.

Hey buddy, ease up. Some of the other users and totally in the wrong but come on, let them have the time they are legally allowed to clear the lights for example before you start blasting them.
These are all people who have started to cross when there's a red man. The Highway Code is clear in rule 22 "When the red figure shows, do not cross". I'm not blasting anyone, I'm not in a Ferrari. It's an unfortunate case in London that you have to push on otherwise pedestrians will completely ignored you and continue to cross even if you have the green. I wait at reds, if the pedestrians did the same there'd be a lot less issue.

@@adriles The thing is though, the timings of the crossing lights offer ample time to get across, even if it turns from green to red, mid-crossing. These people are crossing at a red man. Just done driver awareness course and told "You can drive in the cycle lane" but not dedicated cycle lanes such as the blue ones and the ones on the pavement, so you better brush up on your highway code!
I suggest both you and your instructor have a little swat up on the code: Rule 140 of the Highway Code clearly states:Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You can only drive in them if unavoidable, not just because you want to get a few cars ahead in the traffic. Some cycle lanes are time operated, there's one on my route that is a cycle lane between 7am and 7pm, cars can drive in it outside those hours. However that's not what's happening in the clips you see in my videos, the cars are illegally encroaching on the cycle lane for no other reason than impatience.

@@lesfez1875 If there's no line, solid or broken, then there's no cycle lane! If there is a line then you can't drive in it unless unavoidable. The two instances in my video at 2:13 and 2:56 are both vehicles encroaching on a broken line cycle lane. Something the code says you mustn't do unless unavoidable. The first car was just trying to jump ahead in the traffic, and the can driver was playing with his phone and not looking where he was going. Both avoidable. In both cases I'm right to highlight these as bad driving as they shouldn't be driving in the cycle lane. So why are you telling me to brush up on the code?

The flip side of this is there are countless videos on UA-cam with people cycling through red lights & over pedestrian crossings with people crossings. So your righteous indignation will be lost on a lot of people

Absolutely, I signed up with British Cycling for public liability insurance last week after seeing that ruling. Much like fraudsters who slam on the brakes in front of other drivers to make whiplash claims, I feel this ruling opens it up for fraudsters to jump in front of cycles to sue them!
Well, I always thought the highway code stated you must always prioritise pedestrians, I didn't know bicycles had priority. I guess I learn something new every day.
The Highway Code says that pedestrians should let oncoming traffic pass (be it cycles or motor vehicles), and wait for a safe gap before crossing. It doesn't advocate walking out in front of moving traffic for obvious reasons. That's said, if a pedestrian is in the road when they shouldn't be, as a driver/rider you still have an obligation to avoid a collision. I've read concerns about automated cars, developers worry that people will walk out in front of them as they know that the computer will have to stop. That's effectively what they do with cyclists because, incorrectly they don't see it as being a danger.
Too many dangerous cyclists on the road to gain my empathy. I think cyclists should be made to do basic training as there are too many irresponsible riders in London. Sorry but it's becoming ridiculous.

With the growth of partitioned space for cyclists, and especially some councils’ insane decision to turn bus lanes even on 2 lane roads into cycle only lanes, I think bad feeling towards cyclists is only going to grow.

It's just as well that this cyclist doesn't drive a car. If he drove with that level of aggression towards elderly people, other pedestrians and other road users then he would have killed someone by now. Why do cyclists think that film of them cycling aggressively and attempting to intimidate others somehow gives them the right to post evidence of their aggression on You Tube?
I do drive a car. Pedestrians treat cars very differently to cyclists. If they see a car coming they wait, but if they see a cyclist coming they just walk out in front of it as if they think there’s no danger. That’s the point of my videos, to increase awareness that people need to treat cycles with as much respect as they do the cars, for everyones’ safety. 🙂👍🏻
If we follow that then all cars should be limited to 5mph in busy areas for safety. It's not realistic, pedestrians need to pay attention when in the road. What if I was distracted too and wasn't looking, I'd crash into one of these people and everyone would be against me. I have to pay attention and so do the pedestrians, thankfully for the people in my videos I'm looking where I'm going, and traveling at a sensible speed where I can stop for or avoid them. It's not a secret that roads are dangerous, that's why we're taught from a very young age to respect them, and that's why there's a large number of rules around using the roads. People simply need to follow those.

Me and the 44 ton arctic i drive through London everyday are both “ FORS Gold” compliant and the vehicle is fitted with a 6 camera video system that relays footage live back to my control centre, i could download each and every one of these arse clowns onto utube every night if I wanted, but luckily for them, i have much better things to do with my time.
My four year old has learnt to look both ways before crossing the street. I really can't say I'm sympathetic toward adults who havent yet learnt that lesson.
I had stopped at that red and waited until the lights changed. Cycles are very slow accelerating and cars behind are very impatient and beep if you hold them up once the lights are green. As you can see in the vid I’ve not moved much more than a meter before the green shows, just enough to push off and clip my foot into the pedal. You will often see that, when stopped at reds, cyclists do ready themselves to go as soon as the lights start to change so that feet are on the pedals for the green. In a busy city rush hour you have to be on the ball as if you don’t move quick you frustrate the traffic behind. 🙂👍🏻
Try a London Rush hour commute, wait for all the millions of other commuters to go first and you’ll never get to work. You might have all the time in the world but I need to get to work and back. You don’t get a medal for thinking ahead, that’s standard for any commuting cyclist and hence why my videos are full of misses. I already know that lots of ignorant pedestrians will walk out on me, it’s not a surprise but I still have to get to work! 😉👍🏻

@@namethe4274 My average speed on my cycle is less than 15mph, I’m below the speed limit and travelling slower than cars do on the same roads. My current bike has one gear, slow to accelerate and tops out at about 20mph. The speed is not the cause of these incidents, these are caused by other road users who are not looking where they are going, and not following the rules. So stop effectively victim shaming and stop being an apologist for those who ignore the rules. It’s like telling a woman that she won’t be harassed if she doesn’t wear short skirts. The shortness of the skirt is not the problem! I leave for work at a perfectly decent time, There’s no avoiding the business of London, if I start work early I’ll finish work early and then hit very busy London regardless. Maybe you’re happy to hide in your office between 5am and 10pm to avoid busy roads, but I have a life outside of that. So face the actual problem, hold people to account when they ignore the rules and hopefully they’ll think twice the next time. They might look first, drivers might check their mirror first or decide not to force a cyclist to slam on the brakes by pulling out in front of them. If you are indeed a cyclist, you’re not helping your fellow cyclists by hiding from the problem and laying blame on other riders.
@@namethe4274 I’m very safe, hence my videos are not full of accidents, I’m looking where I’m going and following the rules. There are two tonne motor vehicle’s driving around the same pedestrians at far greater speeds than 10mph. I say again, stop victim shaming and flip your advice. People should be safe around roads as there will be traffic moving at greater than 10mph. Roads are dangerous, we’re all taught that as little children. If we can’t understand that then there should be a blanket rule that no traffic is allowed to go faster than 5mph.
Don't be so bitter. Try cycling through a busy city at rush hour. It's unnecessarily frustrating due to people like you who are anti cyclist. If everyone looked out for each other, and all followed the Highway would be far more pleasent for all.
Why do some cyclists think they have to ride like they are in the tour de France, you are in a big city. You have to be aware as do others. Plus you have to realise some cycle on the pavement,
I’m following the rules and looking where I’m going. And I don’t cycle on pavements as that’s illegal. Why do so many pedestrians feel that they can walk into the road without looking? We’re taught from as soon as we’re old enough to walk that roads are dangerous, you need to look and wait for a safe gap. Read rule 7 of the Highway Code. If you can’t be bothered to look before you walk into the road and are shocked by a cyclist going 15mph having to swerve around you, instead of bleating on about “tour de France” be thankful that it wasn’t a bus going 30mph as you’d be dead, and perhaps look next time. Pretty simple. 🙂👍🏻

Nothing makes me angrier when I’m walking with my wife on the pavement and I hear ding ding ding behind me. You seem to thrive by putting yourself and others in danger especially pedestrians. You don't even use pedestrian crossings correctly, you should only proceed when the crossing is clear, not when you feel like it and pedestrians are still in the roadway. Don't assume anyone has seen you and ride accordingly. And why would you even consider undertaking any vehicle? Your video just shows your intolerance of others - its like YOU have the right over everyone else.
Flip your statement, the pedestrians you see in my video don't use the crossings correctly, they should only proceed when the road is clear (and not on a red man) , not when they feel like it and cyclists are still in the roadway. The video shows many peoples` intolerance of cyclists, it's like they think they have the right over everyone else! When using your comments on me vs the pedestrians there's one key difference, I was following the rules and they weren't, I had the green. Crossings are very simple, it's a turn based system, I wait when it's the pedestrians' turn yet they can't seem to wait when it's the road traffics' turn... You're a huge hypocrite Jim! Apply the same standard you apply to me, to the others in this video, then add the rules of the road and your points come unstuck very quickly!

@@jimgoodwin6294 I've been cycling daily to work and back through Central London for over 14 years now (aside from the current lockdown). I've not hurt anyone in that time let alone kill anyone. I know what I'm doing and I have a system. Big difference between motorbikes and bicycles, whilst the GoPro gives a impression of speed, I'm slow to accelerate and rarely get over 20mph, much slower than a motorbike that hits 30mph in about two seconds. They key difference however is how pedestrians treat you, they hear a motorbike and see you as a big, fast dangerous thing and hence they wait. Pedestrians treat cyclists very differently, and even when they see us some don't think we're a danger and walk out in front of us regardless. Believe it or not, I'm very cautious, which is why my videos are filled with misses. However, as I cyclist I'm ignored in Central London so I have to cycle proactively to hold my ground, otherwise I'll be sat in the middle of the road on a green light whilst pedestrians steam across on the red man. Then inevitably a car or bike will come up behind me and beep me for being in the way. You'll not have experienced that because pedestrians treat motorbikes differently to bicycles.

My point is that this isn't my first time cycling in Central London. I've done it daily for over 14 years, so I do know what I'm doing. That's fact. I know my route inside out, I know the hot spots, I've seen how people behave and over my 14 years I've seen most things. That's how experience works and is why my videos are full of misses and not accidents. I cycle positively, but cautiously and I respect the rules of the road. I just wish others would also as then you'd have to deal with a lot less incidents and I'd have to take a lot less avoiding action to turn potential incidents into near misses. I have huge respect when I cycle, I have maximum focus the whole time, I cycle with my fingers on the brake levers at all times, I keep my cycle well maintained with particular focus on the brakes, I'm not distracted by playing with my phone or listening to music, looking at the scenery etc. When I cycle I'm 100% focused on what is going on around me. I still learn every day, there's always a new situation out their that you've not encountered before, hence I don't let that focus slip and never take safety for granted.
What bikers are forgetting is pedestrians are aloud to cross the cycle lane just like crossing the road I know a lot of these the pedestrians were just stepping out with out looking but there was some clips they were on the cycle lane before the bikes came along or on a crossing when the lights changed which gives them priority
No more than anyone else. I'm cycling the 9 miles to work and back each day, takes about 40-45 minutes so average speed less than 15mph. At least I'm not in so much of a rush that I can't look where I'm going. 😉👍
it's a city it's busy and there are millions of tourists unfamiliar with the minutiae of the local street markings. I'm certain you're not up to speed on the rules and lanes in every other major city. stop being a bell-end.
Agree, he's racing around like it's the final stage of the Tour de France. In one of the busiest and most congested cities (other than Asia!). People are busy, engrossed in their own lives, stressed, taking calls, tourists, unfamiliar with streets, rushing around, making mistakes... ease off on the bloody speed as I think this is causing more danger than the people
If you go to a different country where you don’t know the rules, do you just run out into the road and hope for the best? Or do you take even more care than normal as it’s all new to you? Use your head! 🙂👍🏻

Especially if distracted by maps, by surroundings, you're just dazed but all the new stuff. The same applies even if you're native and even more so as you're probably just in automatic mode.

I don't enjoy having to slam on the brakes for errant pedestrians one bit, I'd far rather an uneventful commute to work. On the many times I'm a pedestrian myself, I'm not so obnoxious and rude that I'll walk out right in front of oncoming traffic and risk an accident, just because I'm too impatient to look or wait until there's room to cross!
What you see is a cyclist following the rules and looking where he’s going. These incidents were caused by other road users not following the rules, not looking and arrogantly/aggressively walking out into oncoming traffic instead of following crossing rules. Flip your perspective. 🙂👍🏻
It’s the only way to make the lanes work. I’ll assume you’re a pedestrian or a driver. I’m a driver and I’d say cyclists are much smarter at using their space effectively. We need to catch up to countries like Holland. It’s much better for everyone all round.
Biggest thing I noticed is cyclists using 'racing' bikes travelling at speeds to high for safety and road/environment conditions. All of the incidents could have been avoided. You wont change car drivers and pedestriansin london. Cycle at high speed in poorly constructed and sized cycle lanes then you are an idiot. You seem to cycle with the belief you have a right and therefore it does not matter, thing is as YOU should know , you can not been seen, and appearing a speed does not help down the inside of a car who is turning . Get a non geared bike and then you will find half of your car pedestrian problems disappear. Speed kills as do lycra idiots.
All of the incidents were avoided, hence them being misses and not accidents. There are cars traveling much faster than the cycles on the same roads (when they are not held at lights or stuck in traffic), the roads are safe for two tonne lumps of steel to travel at 30mph but not for a 100kg cycle and rider at 20mph??? Pull the other one! The speed is not the issue here, if I were cycling too fast these would all have been accidents. I was at an appropriate speed that allowed me to stop for or avoid all incidents. What is the issue is pedestrians and drivers not looking where they are going, by saying that this will never change suggests that you also can't be bothered to look and would rather blame someone else than take personal responsibility for following the rules of the road.
Another video showing me stopping for all the people who choose not to look before walking into the road! Two cyclists were killed in 2017 when pedestrians walked out in front of them without looking. They are creating the danger.

At 1.07 you tell a women to get out the way while you are stationary , no need wait 2 seconds and she's gone. At 1.33 you proceed from a stationary position while pedestrians are still on the road crossing, wait 2 seconds and their gone. At 2.05 you attempt to overtake a cyclist when the van in front has begun its overtake, you then put yourself in danger riding alongside it as it is trying to get in the left lane, then blame the van. At 2.16 the white car in front of you enters the cycle lane, instead of waiting you put yourself in danger by going down the side. yes driver in wrong to be there but didn't you see it ? At 2.29 a car crosses the cycle lane to begin a right turn, so you immediately leave the cycle lane you were in to make a scene, had you remained in the cycle lane there would of been no issue. At 3.21 vehicle crosses cycle lane to turn right, instead of slowing down you decide its a good idea to go around it nearly causing a collision with other oncoming cyclists. As I said *it shows your dangerous and aggressive attitude towards other road users*
@@paulshepperson3993 It's good that you bring up waiting. All of these incidents show pedestrians or drivers who should have waited for the cyclists, but didn't. The first woman you mention couldn't be bothered to wait (or use the crossing) and is trying to clamber over the front of my bike. You can see her daughter try and stop her, and right at the end of the clip you can see a cyclist coming past on my right who nearly hit her. That's just down past Big Ben, that's a dedicated cycle lane and she was heading towards two busy lanes of car traffic. There was nowhere for her to go. She couldn't be bothered to wait, is crossing at the wrong place and putting both herself and the cyclists in danger all for nothing. Too right I told her to get out of the way. She should have stayed on the pavement and used the lights to cross. I didn't endanger her one bit, she did however put herself in a stupid position and nearly took out another cyclist. All due to her lack of patience. If that's the sort of behaviour that you condone you should have a good long think about it!
Hi Hasan. I use an old GoPro Hero 3+ Black on a chest mount. Have been using it for many years. Will likely upgrade this year but only to take advantage of better resolutions/frame rates etc. Keep safe out there. 🙂👍🏻
I'm not a danger, I'm following the rules of the road and stopping for those who don't. The danger comes from people who don't look before walking into rush hour traffic. They are endangering both themselves and cyclists.
@c ra The highway code governs the roads in the UK, and I follow it. Nowhere in the highway code does it say that as a pedestrian you can run out into the road without looking and you have right of way. If not using a crossing, the highway code says that you must stop and look, let oncoming traffic pass (road traffic has right of way) and wait for a safe gap to pass. You really should read the highway code and educate yourself! It'll stop you from embarrassing yourself by making silly comments in public! 😉
Riding flat out at cars or people does not give you automatic right of way. I have seen this sort of aggressive riding with motorcycles, it rarely ends well.
Because someone walks out or pulls out in front of me doesn’t mean I’m cycling at them. I can’t simply vanish just because they didn’t look. In the clips you see in my videos it’s the Highway Code that dictates the other road user should have given way. It’s not difficult to look first before walking into the road, we expect 3yr olds at nursery to understand that...
You're as aggressive as some car drivers, you want to travel safely, pedestrians want to travel safely. You make mistakes on the road, they make mistakes on the road. Chill and share the road.
Us cyclists are keen to point out and prosecute inpatient aggressive drivers yet some of us act like this

Agreed, if there's a pedestrian in the cycle lane then you don't alter your course and try and ride into them. It's about road safety not teaching people a lesson.

I was thinking the same. So many people wanting to cross the road, with very few crossings. I drove a lorry in London for years, and most cyclists were no problem. But there were the odd few that seemed to think that the road belonged to them.
I am a regular commuter cyclist and i totally agree, hes riding along encouraging and making problems where there doesnt need to be any. There were a couple of incidents where id take his side, but generally he was ranting over nothing and making a mountain out of a mole hill.
I think it *is* (partly) about teaching people a lesson - they wouldn't wander around the road with cars whizzing past them - discipline and courtesy by all.
In the Netherlands i hardly have such problems in the bicycle.
The problems and irritations you experience are mainly due to your own lack of insight and lack of patience.
Be a little more patience en relax and most of the problems will solve by there own.
In the Netherlands most other road users respect cyclists much more than in the UK

I do, and give way if that happens.
Before crossing however the pedestrian has to follow rule 7, look, if traffic is coming let it pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. In most of the instances in my videos I’ve already started my turn when the pedestrian walks out without looking. They have responsibility too!

@@DominicPannell It’s a bit chicken and egg, but when these pedestrians walk out in front of you without looking, you can’t just vanish. You’re now in a position of emergency stop plus shouting a warning or ringing a bell. Once one pedestrian goes the rest tend to blindly follow so you need to alert them too.
Just need for people to be aware of cycles and to look first to prevent this. They can’t complain about being scared by a cyclist when they walked out without looking and caused the situation.

Ok. As a cyclist who encounters this a lot on my local cycle paths. I agree that pedestrians are a menace. And need to raise awareness on shared/cycle paths. But you also need to be a bit more patient. Some of those people can’t react fast enough and you’re yelling at them. If you did that to certain people you would get a clump. And some of the speeds you’re pulling are a bit excessive for built up areas. Regardless what the limit is. If it’s busy cars have to slow down. I’m not getting at you personally. Just a few observations. Like I say I too am a cyclist 🚵♂️
Unfortunately this sort of thing happens extremely frequently during rush hour in London. Many pedestrians effectively pay chicken with cyclists. If they think that you will stop, they will walk out. So there's an element of giving the impression that you're asserting your right of way, even though (as you see in the video) I'm always ready to stop if necessary.
I typically don't shout to people now that I have an electric horn. My GoPro is chest mounted, and the mic is only an inch or so below my mouth so whilst you can hear me swearing on the video, it's rarely loud enough for the people ahead of me to hear. Other than the occasional dangerous car driver, I've never stopped to admonish people after the act.
I take the point, would be nice just to cruise along, waving people by. The reality is that I need to get to work, and there are millions of pedestrians trying to get to or from work, so they just keep coming unless you hold your ground.

This is shocking cycling. The highway is a shared space and as a regular cyclist I always recognise this and give space to other road users...especially pedestrians . This cyclist is dangerous and rude.

Cycle lanes with broken white lines are not mandatory. They are advisory and therefore shared space.
They are "advisory" but only in the sense that a motorist can cross it if absolutely necessary and its safe to do so (like there isn't a friggin' cyclist in it) Not in the sense its optional. Besides the issue was the driver was on the phone.

The trouble is most motorists think that anything not in front of them is of no concern. Fixing one bad situation caused by another (like being squeezed) by creating a bad situation for someone else is not acceptable. I assume you are taking about the incident at 2:17 the entrance to Putney Bridge. In that case the white car (and the white van behind) should not be there (as you dont enter a box junction without a clear exit when going straight) nor should they be side by side as the junction and bridge is a single lane, the white car was not put in that situation by the grey van, they put themselves in it by trying to clear a junction when they did not have the time or space to do so.
Squeezed by the mini bus. You were overtaking another cyclist and trying to squeeze in if you'd waited a second the bus would have gone.
It’s a two lane road.
I’m in the left lane, the van is in the right lane.
When I’m overtaking the cyclist I’m still in the left lane, the van still in the right lane and is not indicating.
Only when I’m already alongside the cyclist, does the van start to indicate that it wanted to change lane.
When you want to change lane, you have to check that lane is clear before you do so, traffic already in that lane has priority.
So here the van driver should have waited until the left hand lane was clear. Not just pull over and squeeze the cyclists out if the way. Exact same if it was a car in the left lane alongside. The driver is the one who should have waited a second.

Taxi at 1.48 indicated and then you decided to try and undertake. I think you caused the 'near miss' by not adjusting your speed but it's hard to tell from a video. I think motorists should experience being on a bike and vice versa... Do you drive a car?

You should know by now you have to have a bit of give and take in London traffic. Slow down, learn to anticipate and ve more defensive than agressive. Life will be happier.
And that is exactly why you don't see me colliding with anyone, and haven't for over 11 years now. My average speed is 15mph, well below speed limits.
If only others would have done if the aforementioned give and take towards cyclists (I'll settle for people just looking before walking into the road) then it would be far more harmonious. 😉

Unfortunately, when people walk out into the road under a red man I not only sound my horn to make them aware of my presence, but also to warn the cyclists behind me of the hazard. This is so that they don't cycle into the back of me, or pass me and collide with the pedestrian.
Unfortunate situation all around, I wish people would follow the crossing rules and look and check the road is clear before crossing.

Highway code says "As a driver, you MUST give way to any pedestrians on the crossing, when the amber light is flashing" Did you do that especially at 1:28?
Amber light was flashing with people on the crossing & you were cycling forward.
Amber light wasn't flashing, it was solid, also I did not cross the line on the crossing until it was green. So I'm fully compliant. The pedestrians had a red man, but as they saw the cyclists waiting they crossed regardless. Not a big problem in this case, but it shows a common behaviour of pedestrians in London who completely disregard the lights and put themselves in a compromising position.

I see to many cars, moterbikes & cyclists shouting/beeping at peeps when the pedestrians still have right of way if the lights change when they're half way across. The point I was trying to make is that some of those people were already on the crossing when your light was still on red & you were moving towards them which I feel was wrong. Point taken that you only crossed the line when it went green. Be safe out there

I've been a bit shocked by antics south of London Bridge, cyclists absolutely flying through red lights, and you can see pedestrians looking for them when the lights are green. And I don't mean going through 1/2 seconds late, I mean totally ignoring solid reds that have been there for some time.

Yes, it's very annoying when stupid, clueless pedestrians leap out in front of you or wander around in the middle of the road/cycle lane. But I still think you could cycle more cautiously, and allow more time where you can see a potential incident up ahead. That or get a jousting spear with a cattle prod on the end.
In the London rush hour there are literally millions of people commuting into the city centre, so at all times there’s always a potential incident ahead. I have to get to work, so I have to make progress whilst always being ready to take avoiding action. So cattle prod it is then! 🤣👍🏻

No, I was riding down a cycle lane when those pedestrians ignored the red figure on the crossing and walked out in front of me without looking.
I can’t just vanish into a puff of smoke just because some pedestrians couldn’t be bothered to look or wait. I have to slam on the brakes and try and guess which way they’ll go to avoid them.
It’s super simple, if you’re going to cross a road then look to see if anything is coming first, and if you have a red figure at a crossing then it’s safer to wait.
Its because he went in the direction his eyes where looking , not where his unobstructed route was. Indicating he is a menace on the road. A road hog, dangerous to himself and others. He neglects to have forward planning and ignores hazards on the road developing in front of him because of his own overarching sense of entitlement that he is on the road on his bike and everyone else should be getting out of his way. As this was filmed some time ago he may have squashed by something by now. Who knows?

Section 170 Highway Code: watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way......
In a lot of these, I'm in a cycle lane, not a road. However the code is referring to not beginning a turn into a road of there are already pedestrians in it. If you take the road junction at 0:41 for example, there is nobody in the road as I start my turn, I'm past the apex of the corner when the woman starts to walk out on me. At that point I'm fully committed to the turn, I can't just disappear into a puff of smoke for her convenience!
Your extract from the code is not relevant here. Have a look at the rules for pedestrians when crossing a road, especially the part that says that pedestrians must first look, and let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing.
Your rule is relevant at the point I started my turn, and there was nobody in the road so I'm all clear. At the point the lady walks out I am very much oncoming traffic, so she falls foul of the code.

I commute at 7 am from mile end to parliament sq on the super highways and it's brilliant then, nothing but bikes. But going the other way at 5pm I did once and never again. Because the tourists are everywhere as in your video. You are in the right in most of the instances but being technically right is not quite enough in this crazy city.
Parliament Square is certainly a hot spot, it's always a slow crawl through there. Lots of tourists who are unaccustomed with UK traffic rules and signals.

My average speed on my commute is 15mph, I'm rarely over 10mph in the pedestrian heavy areas. I'm slower than the cars in those areas which pose far more threat to pedestrians.

Because I'm aware and cycle at an appropriate speed is why my videos are full of misses, and not accidents. I have no desire to be in an accident and cycle with my fingers on the brakes at all times. I'm not distracted by my phone or music etc, I'm paying full attention on my commute.

What does is the fact that I avoided all incidents in this video because I'm sensible, in control of my bicycle and am looking where I'm going.
I'm very aware that it's London, I live here. When I go abroad I always take extra care on the roads of somewhere I'm not used to. I take personal responsibility for my actions. The vast majority of counties have road safety awareness courses, it's fair to say that most adults understand that roads are dangerous. So being a tourist is no excuse. I'm most likely to come off worse in a collision so it's not just themselves they are putting at risk. It's not a big ask for people to look before walking into the road. We expect small children to understand that when they are taught road safety at junior school, adults should be able to grasp it also!

I cycle through central London four days a week. My ride is never like this.
At 57 when the lady helps an elderly man to cross the road..I regularly have to stop traffic to help my arthritic mother in law over the road. Never has a driver abused me...you are conducting a vehicle and since you are aware ( and thus not surprised) by pedestrians stepping out, you cannot use their foolishness in your defence if you hit one apparently on purpose. When you grow up, you will perhaps learn some tolerance. Unless you abuse a man who is stronger than you... and beats you up.
I suspect Sir that you are wise enough not to walk your mother out on the red man. And you likely indicate to the traffic your intention to cross before you do so.
I stopped a long way back from this couple, no where near to colliding with them. I sounded my horn to warn the 20 cyclists behind me of the hazard, so that they didn't cycle into the back of me, pass me and collide with the pedestrians.
The lady started shouting at us I stayed because I sounded my horn.
All a very unfortunate situation caused by the lady not waiting for the green man. When I take my 92 year old grand mother out, she is very slow. I always wait for the green man, and check all traffic has stopped before leading her across the road. That's the duty of care this lady did not show.
Also wishing people to get beaten up is childish and I'm no way helps the situation.

May or may not be technically "in the right" in a lot of these cases, but what is clear is that you are overly aggressive and have terrible anticipation. Yes, some pedestrians are morons, but we have always known that, you need to ride accordingly.
My anticipation is what prevents these being incidents, and you are mistaking my desire to push on and not be held up, for aggression.
If I see someone who I think may step out on me, I don't stop and sit on the pavement until they are passed. Whilst that would be lovely, I've got to get to work and don't have time to keep doing that every five minutes.
I see the potential incident, I make necessary adjustments so that I can stop if necessary, then I try and keep going. Often, when the pedestrian sees that you mean to keep going, they will back off. A lot of the pedestrians are trying their luck, trying to force the cyclist to stop even when the rider had the right of way. If they see that you're not intimidated then they wait.

I think you are in the wrong too. You are far too aggressive with pedestrians. As a car driver you get pedestrians doing this as well all the time, you can't just go around blowing your horn at them, the have to anticipate them and make allowances for them. In a lot of these case I would have stopped my car to let them cross in their own time, especially the elderly couple you bullied off the road. It may have been your right of way but you have to be sensible yourself. End of the day if you are ten minutes late for work, it better than you or someone else getting injured or losing their life so just take your time.
The “I need to get to work” excuse is not valid for car drivers so why should it be valid for cyclists? Leave ten minutes earlier. Clearly many of these pedestrians were in the wrong but there was an elderly couple who needed more consideration. Some of these pedestrians may have hearing or sight difficulties. Also when the traffic lights change in your favour you are free to proceed only if the way is clear.

I wait at the red lights, so the pedestrians you see have the red man and should be waiting. They don't have the green otherwise I would be stopped. Why is your view that I'm cycling at them, rather than they walking out on the cyclist?
Highway Code states that you must wait for a gap before pulling out, you'll fail your driving test if you pull out into a road and force the oncoming traffic to slam on the brakes. So yes, the Chelsea tractor should have waited, the driver is wrapped in two tonnes of steel and it's "only" a cyclist coming so why wait! Is that your attitude when driving?

If as a cyclist you wait for every single person or vehicle that wants to ignore the rules then you'll never get anywhere, probably would be better off on the bus. At 0.45, in the bottom left you can see my knee, it's still as I'm coasting around the corner. You are incorrect, I was not speeding up.
At 1.11 I'm coasting again, well below the speed limits. I'm slowing whilst I find a gap through the pedestrians who are ignoring the oncoming traffic. So you're incorrect again. I'm not in beach of any speeding or other road rules.

Love riding in London, as long as you look ahead and have a good level of safety and anticipate it’s all good. I was knocked down in the Walworth Road years back and it did take the edge off my confidence and I stopped being so risky-going through red lights, up the inside of lorries etc.. . I got my full motorcycle license last year and that’s given me a greater appreciation of awareness and safety around other road users. I automatically do shoulder checks now when changing direction on my bicycle or when setting off, which I was a bit casual about before on my bicycle . I cycle everyday still and it’s great way to commute and to see London. Ride safe 😊

@Saif Chowdhury That is a very hard job, especially trying to negotiate those giant vehicles around small roads when you're tired and on a deadline.
The problem I mainly have is that pedestrians walk out in front of me, either without looking, or see me but don't care. If I collide with them I'll likely end up in hospital, plus they'll likely sue me despite it being them ignoring the traffic signals or rules of the road.
I suspect such people would think twice about walking out in front of your lorry.

Pedestrians have priority if they have started to cross the road, a green light does not mean go.
It means proceed if it is safe to do so.
Pedestrians should not start to cross when there is a red man, as per the Highway Code:
"At traffic lights. There may be special signals for pedestrians. You should ONLY start to cross the road when the green figure shows."
And:
"Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings operated by pedestrians. Push the control button to activate the traffic signals. When the red figure shows, DO NOT CROSS."
The Highway Code also outlines general crossing rules that state that, before crossing Pedestrians must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (the road traffic has priority) then wait for a safe gap before crossing.
Regardless, you did not see me clattering into these pedestrians as, unlike them, I'm looking where I am going and following the rules.

@stinkydog dogstink No, as I've outlined above, the obligation is on the pedestrian to wait at the red man, or if there is oncoming traffic. The law is that I have to wait at a red light, which I do. It's pretty simple system of taking turns depending of whether you have red or green. Don't defend people who ignore this simple system. You won't see me defending cyclists who run red lights!
All parties have a duty to avoid an accident, which I did.

You're quite right about the rules, the Highway Code states that before crossing the road you must, stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. These rules apply to everyone even if the oncoming traffic is "only" a cyclist. It's a shame more people don't respect that.

You can see her daughter try and grab her to stop her from crossing there. There's 3 lanes of road traffic the other side of the cycle lane there, you can't cross there.
The lady should be crossing at the lights you see ahead, she was too impatient to do so. As well as nearly knocking me off by walking into my front wheel, she also nearly gets wiped out by the cyclist passing on my right. So yes, I told her to get out of the way. A very foolish action by that lady.

There is an important principle that the most vulnerable person has right of way. I am a regular cyclist myself,but you seem more concerned about trying to set a personal best time than safely cycling. You need to chill out and be respectful of all other road users.
Speed through London is dictated by the traffic, and how you catch the lights etc. There's zero point in trying to set a best time.
I'm concerned with getting to work and back in a decent time, traveling within the speed limit and conditions.
Respect works both ways, when I'm a pedestrian I look before crossing the road, and if I see a cyclist I wait. Especially if the lights are showing me a red man. That's a small bit of respect that costs nothing, and yet is routinely ignored by many on my morning commute.
I've seen fixie riders passing through traffic safer and probably faster than you, just by going with the flow. I know, that in a lot of cases you are in the right. You try to warn people by sounding your horn, but it actually creates a lot of unwanted situations. The trajectories of pedestrians are easier calculated. The moment you sound the horn, they have to realize, analyze and react. It all costs time and the decisions coming out of it are more often than not, not the wisest ones. Maybe try using your horn, when you think it's an potential emergency situation and rather choose your gap, when not.
I've given up on the horn for now. I'll yell if I have to but otherwise just go around things. 😉👍

Consider rule 170 of the Highway Code and then consider how many times you were in the wrong when bullying pedestrians
Consider rule 7D, 18 and 21 of the Highway Code, and then consider how pedestrians constantly ignore these! Most of the time they see the cyclist and just don't care, trying to bully us out of their way rather than waiting as they should.
Rule 170 only applies when turning into a side road, and in my video where there were pedestrians in the road I slowed and gave way. You didn't see me bouncing off anyone did you!
At 0.41 in the video I've signalled and am already around the corner when the lady walks out. We're past rule 170 as she wasn't in the road when I started turning, we're very much into rule 7D in that she has to stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap!

I have used the streets of London as cyclist commuting from Croydon to Central London for 27 years, as a bus driver back in the eighties, as a Firefighter for 27 years up until 2013 and since then a black cab driver. I have taken numerous advanced driving courses and I can tell you every one of the instructors I had, if asked "when do pedestrians have priority", would have said "always" If a screen zombie stagers into the road in front of you without warning and you collide with him/her maybe you could have anticipated better, but you can't really be blamed. If as in your videos you see them in plenty of time and yet instead of stopping you shout at them, then you are in the wrong. I see that your anticipation is generally excellent, however the other key rule of safe use of the road is to secretly understand that every incident is your fault.

The point of my videos is that if everyone looks out for each other, and takes their turn at the lights, or in accordance to the Code then it'll be much nicer for all. As cyclists unfortunately we are bottom of the list unfortunately, with a large number of pedestrians and drivers not being aware of, or looking out for us.
I take your point, but I'd phrase it differently. In the case where a pedestrian should have given priority, and didn't and walks into the road, then as a road user you absolutely have a duty to avoid an accident.
I wouldn't however say that the pedestrian now has priority across all lanes because they are in the road. I would say that the pedestrian, once aware they have not identified oncoming traffic, now has a duty to return to the pavement via the shortest and safest route possible. If they are halfway across then they should complete their crossing, however if they are one step into the road and they hear a shout from a cyclist, or a honk from a vehicle then they should step back onto the pavement and wait for a safe gap.
I do my utmost to be fully aware, fingers on the brakes etc so that I can always stop. I have no desire to collide with anyone. And I achieve that but there is a limit to that where someone can step out right in front of you beyond the limit of brakes or reaction time.
If I see someone start to cross when they shouldn't I shout, in the hope that they will step back onto the pavement, or if they are in the road they will speed up which will reduce the risk of a collision if I can't slow in time.
The second reason I shout is typically, if one pedestrian goes for it the other 20 who were waiting tend to follow, especially during rush hour. It's just to make them aware of my presence.
Other than maybe once or twice in the 14+ years of cycling to work I don't stop to argue with or lambast the pedestrians. It's just a yell the same way they'd get a honk from a car if they walked out on it. I did use an electric horn for a while but prefer to shout.
You say you drove a black cab for a while. You'll note that black cabs are never in the incidents in my videos because the drivers are always really good around cyclists. I can't say the same about Uber drivers who spend their time looking at their sat-nav rather than the road!

Between Blackfriars bridge and my office (just past St Pauls), and also the King's road between Putney Bridge and Cheyne Walk tend to be the hot spots for pedestrians so have to slow a lot through those areas.
Agree with you on how the courts will look at it, thankfully I'm older and slower now with a slower bike so hopefully less risk now. Although my reactions are slower too! 😉

I used to ride just like this. And I almost gave myself a heart attack from all the stress and anger from every single ride. And then.. I realized that most likely this is how car drivers feel about cyclists. Not saying every cyclist is a clueless moron that rides out into danger but there definetly is a lot of those. So instead, in order to save my heart, I started always giving pedestrians more space.
It’s a balance in Central London rush hour, there are literally millions of pedestrians all rushing into work, but you need to make progress yourself and they’ll never wait for you. So it’s a balance of holding your ground to an extent, but always being ready to stop in an instant.

When any pedestrian has already started crossing, they automatically have the right of way. Read the Highway code.
Only when a driver turning into a side road, and a pedestrian has already started to cross should the driver give way.
There is no blanket rule that backs up your statement. Pedestrians should either use the crossings, otherwise they must abide to rule 7 of the Highway Code. I suggest you read that, specifically rule 7D which states that if traffic is coming, pedestrians must let it pass, then wait for a safe gap before crossing.

Secondly, when the lights go amber the movement you see is just me clipping into the pedals so I can move on green (as cars behind are on the horn at you the second it changes if you’re not moving), I maybe move a metre before it’s green at 1mph, there’s no danger there. The pedestrians however are ignoring the Highway Code which states do not start to cross when the red figure is showing. It had been showing for a fair while before the lights changed. But we know you think the Highway Code only applies to cyclists. 😉👍🏻

At first it looked like you were in the right, but as the video went on it transpires you are a menace to some of these people who cannot react very fast due to their age or other circumstances. I wish that people would honour the lights and crossing rules. Especially if you are older and have shower reactions, waiting for the green man, or a safe gap before crossing is the best way to be safe.
Roads in London during rush hour are busy, that's no secret. As a cyclist if you pootle along, waving everyone else through (eyesight when it's green for traffic) you just get a torrent of abuse and horns from the traffic behind you.

In the real world you also have to expect that cyclists will be traveling along the road at 15-20mph. Many comments on here don't seem to accept that. When someone steps out in front of me I can't vanish. I have to brake, sometimes sound the horn to warn both the pedestrian in the road plus the cyclists behind me (as they may not have seen the hazard past me). It was an entirely avoidable situation, when I take my 91 grandmother out I'm very careful with road crossings because she needs plenty of time. This woman started to cross under a red when traffic was oncoming at speed. So yes, me and the other cyclist in the front did make a lot of noise to avoid anyone colliding with them, but it was a situation caused by the woman who then got very angry about it.
I dont know about you. But i am always prepared to run out of moving traffic’s way when i cross on red. I think it’s a bit hard for an old man with walking stick to do that, so stick with green man.

Regardless, the cyclists waited for man and lady here to cross. The horn was more to warn the cyclists behind me so that they didn't slam into the back of me as I braked (or zip past me and collide with the pedestrians), also to warn the old man and lady that they were in danger.
Remember a cyclist was recently prosecuted after colliding with a pedestrian, heavily fined even though the pedestrian clearly was at fault. I believe the judge's ruling was based on vehicles have a high responsibility and the bigger and heavier, the more responsibility. Message, we need to protect ourselves from numpties on foot and behind the wheel.
Yes, I read about that case, and spoke to the cyclist involved.
The judge ruled that blame was 50:50, despite the pedestrian being the party that broke the rules (by ignoring the red man). The judge argued that, as the pedestrian was "established" in the road the cyclist should have stopped. He had moved to go around the pedestrian but she changed direction and jumped back into his path. They were both knocked unconscious.
She launched a chain against the cyclist. However the cyclist didn't launch a claim against her (as he doesn't like the claim culture). However this was a mistake, as there is a cut off for doing this. Had he had a counter claim, the 50:50 ruling would have meant it netted off and he wouldn't have had to pay damages. Also he didn't have insurance which would also have limited the claim he'd have to pay.
Off the back of this, I now have got insurance.

You need to understand, as the 'cycle lane' has a broken line, other vehicles can enter it if they want. If the cycle lane has a solid line, then cars etc cannot enter it.
Incorrect, cars are only allowed to enter a broken line cycle lane if "unavoidable". Not just so they can get past someone. I've put the text from the highway code below:
Rule 140
Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply.
Regardless of this rule, if you are going to pull into another lane, be it a cycle lane or another road traffic lane, you still have to look and check that it is clear before doing so. You shouldn't just pull across without looking and cut others up or you risk an accident. Do you understand that?

The one rule I always TRIED to follow cycling in London for 10 years was to always position myself either at the front or back of a vehicle and not beside. I got cut off once really badly with a driver turning left and cutting me off to the point I slammed on my brakes and almost went over the bars. I realised there and then I would get killed so easily in that situation. It's not always possible, but with this rule I managed to stay alive. My go-to line for pedestrians in a bike lanes was to stop and exaggeratedly exclaim, "nice bike"! They would say, "what bike"? And I would answer, "exactly, so get out of the f**king bike lane"!

Cyclists typically use cycle lanes where available, however many roads don’t have cycle lanes, and even when there is a cycle lane there are many reasons why cyclists will leave them. If you need to turn right up ahead you need to leave the cycle lane to get into the right hand lane for example. Hence why there are many rules for motorists to take care around cyclists. 🙂👍🏻

Highway code, give way to pedestrians who are crossing the road and who have started to cross. Applies to bicycles as well as cars. If they are in 'your' lane, you have no right to charge towards them to teach them a lesson. Drivers often do it too, and it is wrong. I know it's frustrating, but that space in front of you doesn't belong to you.
That section of the highway code that you are quoting refers to turning into a side road when a pedestrian has already started to cross before you turn. Not relevant here.
When on a straight bit of road the highway code rules for pedestrians crossing state:
B Stop just before you get to the kerb, where you can see if anything is coming. Do not get too close to the traffic. If there’s no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road but make sure you can still see approaching traffic.
C Look all around for traffic and listen. Traffic could come from any direction. Listen as well, because you can sometimes hear traffic before you see it.

This is what I encounter daily, pedestrians not looking, not seeing oncoming traffic and waiting for it to pass and not waiting for a safe gap.

Unfortunately, when cycling in London you have to be assertive to make progress. I frequently encounter pedestrians who refuse to wait for cyclists and try and force me to stop for them when the rules say that they should wait. So it's a bluff, I hold my ground so that they think I won't stop, and typically they decide to wait or clear the road. It is a bluff, I won't collide with anyone.
I'd far rather it wasn't that way but that's the reality.
I do not class myself as a cyclist anymore, just a guy who found in cycling a suitable alternative of mobility when possible like many others who still class as cyclists untill the day they realise they actually aren't, that's it.
Myself, I pretty much only commute on the cycle. Sometimes do a lap around the park with a friend on a weekend but that’s it. My cycle is primarily used for commuting for work.

Pedestrians only have right of way at designated crossings and they are obliged to use them as they are intended, like not crossing on a red man, or crossing without looking, or crossing "because its only a cyclist" like the zombies in this video.

gotta say, i think those tweeting alarm sounding horns you have really confuse people. It's like a disorienting surprise sound, rather than a solid beep or even a recording of a honk. I was in a big ride recently and someone had that style beeping behind me, i thought it was his phone chirping some notifications for about half the ride!

I had the same thought. It was only on about the third clip that I realised it was the equivalent of his bell. I think I would have something that sounds like a car horn. If I was crossing the road without looking and I heard a car horn, it would get my attention.
I really like the raygun sound, but if I was a pedestrian and I heard it I definitely wouldn't think 'bike'. I'd probably think I was being abducted by Marvin the Martian.
Motor vehicles are legally entitled to cross into a cycle lane if the white line is broken, not solid.
Hey buddy, ease up. Some of the other users and totally in the wrong but come on, let them have the time they are legally allowed to clear the lights for example before you start blasting them.
These are all people who have started to cross when there's a red man. The Highway Code is clear in rule 22 "When the red figure shows, do not cross".
I'm not blasting anyone, I'm not in a Ferrari. It's an unfortunate case in London that you have to push on otherwise pedestrians will completely ignored you and continue to cross even if you have the green. I wait at reds, if the pedestrians did the same there'd be a lot less issue.

@@adriles The thing is though, the timings of the crossing lights offer ample time to get across, even if it turns from green to red, mid-crossing. These people are crossing at a red man. Whether they like it or not, they need to wait, as well as be more considerate for cyclists and motorists themselves.

Have a read of rule 7 of the Highway Code, pedestrians should stop, look, if traffic is coming let it pass, and wait for a safe gap before crossing. That applies to the cycle lane as well as the road.
Just done driver awareness course and told "You can drive in the cycle lane" but not dedicated cycle lanes such as the blue ones and the ones on the pavement, so you better brush up on your highway code!
I suggest both you and your instructor have a little swat up on the code:
Rule 140 of the Highway Code clearly states:Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable.
You can only drive in them if unavoidable, not just because you want to get a few cars ahead in the traffic.
Some cycle lanes are time operated, there's one on my route that is a cycle lane between 7am and 7pm, cars can drive in it outside those hours. However that's not what's happening in the clips you see in my videos, the cars are illegally encroaching on the cycle lane for no other reason than impatience.

@@lesfez1875 If there's no line, solid or broken, then there's no cycle lane! If there is a line then you can't drive in it unless unavoidable. The two instances in my video at 2:13 and 2:56 are both vehicles encroaching on a broken line cycle lane. Something the code says you mustn't do unless unavoidable. The first car was just trying to jump ahead in the traffic, and the can driver was playing with his phone and not looking where he was going. Both avoidable.
In both cases I'm right to highlight these as bad driving as they shouldn't be driving in the cycle lane. So why are you telling me to brush up on the code?

Absolutely, I signed up with British Cycling for public liability insurance last week after seeing that ruling.
Much like fraudsters who slam on the brakes in front of other drivers to make whiplash claims, I feel this ruling opens it up for fraudsters to jump in front of cycles to sue them!
Well, I always thought the highway code stated you must always prioritise pedestrians, I didn't know bicycles had priority. I guess I learn something new every day.
The Highway Code says that pedestrians should let oncoming traffic pass (be it cycles or motor vehicles), and wait for a safe gap before crossing.
It doesn't advocate walking out in front of moving traffic for obvious reasons.
That's said, if a pedestrian is in the road when they shouldn't be, as a driver/rider you still have an obligation to avoid a collision.
I've read concerns about automated cars, developers worry that people will walk out in front of them as they know that the computer will have to stop. That's effectively what they do with cyclists because, incorrectly they don't see it as being a danger.
Too many dangerous cyclists on the road to gain my empathy. I think cyclists should be made to do basic training as there are too many irresponsible riders in London. Sorry but it's becoming ridiculous.

With the growth of partitioned space for cyclists, and especially some councils’ insane decision to turn bus lanes even on 2 lane roads into cycle only lanes, I think bad feeling towards cyclists is only going to grow.

It's just as well that this cyclist doesn't drive a car. If he drove with that level of aggression towards elderly people, other pedestrians and other road users then he would have killed someone by now. Why do cyclists think that film of them cycling aggressively and attempting to intimidate others somehow gives them the right to post evidence of their aggression on You Tube?
I do drive a car. Pedestrians treat cars very differently to cyclists. If they see a car coming they wait, but if they see a cyclist coming they just walk out in front of it as if they think there’s no danger. That’s the point of my videos, to increase awareness that people need to treat cycles with as much respect as they do the cars, for everyones’ safety. 🙂👍🏻

It's not realistic, pedestrians need to pay attention when in the road. What if I was distracted too and wasn't looking, I'd crash into one of these people and everyone would be against me. I have to pay attention and so do the pedestrians, thankfully for the people in my videos I'm looking where I'm going, and traveling at a sensible speed where I can stop for or avoid them.
It's not a secret that roads are dangerous, that's why we're taught from a very young age to respect them, and that's why there's a large number of rules around using the roads. People simply need to follow those.

Me and the 44 ton arctic i drive through London everyday are both “ FORS Gold” compliant and the vehicle is fitted with a 6 camera video system that relays footage live back to my control centre, i could download each and every one of these arse clowns onto utube every night if I wanted, but luckily for them, i have much better things to do with my time.
My four year old has learnt to look both ways before crossing the street.

Congratulations on showing yourself jumping a red light at 0:49, the light was on red-amber, which is a red, not a 'go' at all.
I had stopped at that red and waited until the lights changed. Cycles are very slow accelerating and cars behind are very impatient and beep if you hold them up once the lights are green. As you can see in the vid I’ve not moved much more than a meter before the green shows, just enough to push off and clip my foot into the pedal.
You will often see that, when stopped at reds, cyclists do ready themselves to go as soon as the lights start to change so that feet are on the pedals for the green. In a busy city rush hour you have to be on the ball as if you don’t move quick you frustrate the traffic behind. 🙂👍🏻

@@namethe4274 My average speed on my cycle is less than 15mph, I’m below the speed limit and travelling slower than cars do on the same roads. My current bike has one gear, slow to accelerate and tops out at about 20mph.
The speed is not the cause of these incidents, these are caused by other road users who are not looking where they are going, and not following the rules.
So stop effectively victim shaming and stop being an apologist for those who ignore the rules. It’s like telling a woman that she won’t be harassed if she doesn’t wear short skirts. The shortness of the skirt is not the problem!
I leave for work at a perfectly decent time, There’s no avoiding the business of London, if I start work early I’ll finish work early and then hit very busy London regardless. Maybe you’re happy to hide in your office between 5am and 10pm to avoid busy roads, but I have a life outside of that.
So face the actual problem, hold people to account when they ignore the rules and hopefully they’ll think twice the next time. They might look first, drivers might check their mirror first or decide not to force a cyclist to slam on the brakes by pulling out in front of them.
If you are indeed a cyclist, you’re not helping your fellow cyclists by hiding from the problem and laying blame on other riders.

Roads are dangerous, we’re all taught that as little children. If we can’t understand that then there should be a blanket rule that no traffic is allowed to go faster than 5mph.

Why do so many pedestrians feel that they can walk into the road without looking? We’re taught from as soon as we’re old enough to walk that roads are dangerous, you need to look and wait for a safe gap. Read rule 7 of the Highway Code.
If you can’t be bothered to look before you walk into the road and are shocked by a cyclist going 15mph having to swerve around you, instead of bleating on about “tour de France” be thankful that it wasn’t a bus going 30mph as you’d be dead, and perhaps look next time. Pretty simple. 🙂👍🏻

@@jimgoodwin6294 I've been cycling daily to work and back through Central London for over 14 years now (aside from the current lockdown). I've not hurt anyone in that time let alone kill anyone. I know what I'm doing and I have a system.
Big difference between motorbikes and bicycles, whilst the GoPro gives a impression of speed, I'm slow to accelerate and rarely get over 20mph, much slower than a motorbike that hits 30mph in about two seconds. They key difference however is how pedestrians treat you, they hear a motorbike and see you as a big, fast dangerous thing and hence they wait. Pedestrians treat cyclists very differently, and even when they see us some don't think we're a danger and walk out in front of us regardless.
Believe it or not, I'm very cautious, which is why my videos are filled with misses. However, as I cyclist I'm ignored in Central London so I have to cycle proactively to hold my ground, otherwise I'll be sat in the middle of the road on a green light whilst pedestrians steam across on the red man. Then inevitably a car or bike will come up behind me and beep me for being in the way. You'll not have experienced that because pedestrians treat motorbikes differently to bicycles.

I'd hope anyone in control of a powerful motorcycle knows what they are doing, otherwise they shouldn't be on it.
My point is that this isn't my first time cycling in Central London. I've done it daily for over 14 years, so I do know what I'm doing. That's fact. I know my route inside out, I know the hot spots, I've seen how people behave and over my 14 years I've seen most things. That's how experience works and is why my videos are full of misses and not accidents.
I cycle positively, but cautiously and I respect the rules of the road. I just wish others would also as then you'd have to deal with a lot less incidents and I'd have to take a lot less avoiding action to turn potential incidents into near misses.
I have huge respect when I cycle, I have maximum focus the whole time, I cycle with my fingers on the brake levers at all times, I keep my cycle well maintained with particular focus on the brakes, I'm not distracted by playing with my phone or listening to music, looking at the scenery etc. When I cycle I'm 100% focused on what is going on around me.
I still learn every day, there's always a new situation out their that you've not encountered before, hence I don't let that focus slip and never take safety for granted.
What bikers are forgetting is pedestrians are aloud to cross the cycle lane just like crossing the road I know a lot of these the pedestrians were just stepping out with out looking but there was some clips they were on the cycle lane before the bikes came along or on a crossing when the lights changed which gives them priority

No more than anyone else. I'm cycling the 9 miles to work and back each day, takes about 40-45 minutes so average speed less than 15mph.
At least I'm not in so much of a rush that I can't look where I'm going. 😉👍

Agree, he's racing around like it's the final stage of the Tour de France. In one of the busiest and most congested cities (other than Asia!). People are busy, engrossed in their own lives, stressed, taking calls, tourists, unfamiliar with streets, rushing around, making mistakes... ease off on the bloody speed as I think this is causing more danger than the people

What you see is a cyclist following the rules and looking where he’s going.
These incidents were caused by other road users not following the rules, not looking and arrogantly/aggressively walking out into oncoming traffic instead of following crossing rules.

Biggest thing I noticed is cyclists using 'racing' bikes travelling at speeds to high for safety and road/environment conditions. All of the incidents could have been avoided. You wont change car drivers and pedestriansin london. Cycle at high speed in poorly constructed and sized cycle lanes then you are an idiot. You seem to cycle with the belief you have a right and therefore it does not matter, thing is as YOU should know , you can not been seen, and appearing a speed does not help down the inside of a car who is turning . Get a non geared bike and then you will find half of your car pedestrian problems disappear. Speed kills as do lycra idiots.

There are cars traveling much faster than the cycles on the same roads (when they are not held at lights or stuck in traffic), the roads are safe for two tonne lumps of steel to travel at 30mph but not for a 100kg cycle and rider at 20mph??? Pull the other one!
The speed is not the issue here, if I were cycling too fast these would all have been accidents. I was at an appropriate speed that allowed me to stop for or avoid all incidents. What is the issue is pedestrians and drivers not looking where they are going, by saying that this will never change suggests that you also can't be bothered to look and would rather blame someone else than take personal responsibility for following the rules of the road.

Two cyclists were killed in 2017 when pedestrians walked out in front of them without looking. They are creating the danger.

@@paulshepperson3993 I'm following the rules, cycling below the speed limits, not cycling on pavements, stopping for red lights etc. There are no antics, just me trying to get to work and back.
At 1.07 you tell a women to get out the way while you are stationary , no need wait 2 seconds and she's gone.
At 1.33 you proceed from a stationary position while pedestrians are still on the road crossing, wait 2 seconds and their gone.
At 2.05 you attempt to overtake a cyclist when the van in front has begun its overtake, you then put yourself in danger riding alongside it as it is trying to get in the left lane, then blame the van.
At 2.16 the white car in front of you enters the cycle lane, instead of waiting you put yourself in danger by going down the side. yes driver in wrong to be there but didn't you see it ?
At 2.29 a car crosses the cycle lane to begin a right turn, so you immediately leave the cycle lane you were in to make a scene, had you remained in the cycle lane there would of been no issue.
At 3.21 vehicle crosses cycle lane to turn right, instead of slowing down you decide its a good idea to go around it nearly causing a collision with other oncoming cyclists.

@@paulshepperson3993 It's good that you bring up waiting. All of these incidents show pedestrians or drivers who should have waited for the cyclists, but didn't.
The first woman you mention couldn't be bothered to wait (or use the crossing) and is trying to clamber over the front of my bike. You can see her daughter try and stop her, and right at the end of the clip you can see a cyclist coming past on my right who nearly hit her. That's just down past Big Ben, that's a dedicated cycle lane and she was heading towards two busy lanes of car traffic. There was nowhere for her to go. She couldn't be bothered to wait, is crossing at the wrong place and putting both herself and the cyclists in danger all for nothing. Too right I told her to get out of the way. She should have stayed on the pavement and used the lights to cross.
I didn't endanger her one bit, she did however put herself in a stupid position and nearly took out another cyclist. All due to her lack of patience.
If that's the sort of behaviour that you condone you should have a good long think about it!

Hi Hasan. I use an old GoPro Hero 3+ Black on a chest mount. Have been using it for many years. Will likely upgrade this year but only to take advantage of better resolutions/frame rates etc.

Wow you are a danger on the road. I think the easiest way to stay safe would be to get the bus or maybe cycle with more consideration.
I'm not a danger, I'm following the rules of the road and stopping for those who don't.
The danger comes from people who don't look before walking into rush hour traffic. They are endangering both themselves and cyclists.
@c ra The highway code governs the roads in the UK, and I follow it.
Nowhere in the highway code does it say that as a pedestrian you can run out into the road without looking and you have right of way.
If not using a crossing, the highway code says that you must stop and look, let oncoming traffic pass (road traffic has right of way) and wait for a safe gap to pass.
You really should read the highway code and educate yourself! It'll stop you from embarrassing yourself by making silly comments in public! 😉
Riding flat out at cars or people does not give you automatic right of way. I have seen this sort of aggressive riding with motorcycles, it rarely ends well.
Because someone walks out or pulls out in front of me doesn’t mean I’m cycling at them. I can’t simply vanish just because they didn’t look.
