What an absolutely gorgeous ship. That baby could've been a real powerhouse if the higher-ups hadn't botched the whole project so badly.
I know right? :)
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Loved this class. Star Trek Online has some of the most intriguing and imaginative Starfleet starships. Glad you posted this class.
Yeah, that's too bad. It's a really good starship on Star Trek Online.
When I look at this ship. My thoughts go holly ship!!!!!! This it a ship to not mess with if this ships problems were worked out. Looks like a war ship mentality but wasn't executed well. Good video.
It seems that the ship was just ahead of its time. It’s features seem to be a cross between the Excelsior and the Sovereign. Great video as always 🖖
Thank you so much Linda!
While it is mostly headcanon and fanfiction, I appreciate that you don't just go "oh yeah starfleet built this ship and it was the bestest". Not every ship design works out and that can add depth to the universe.
It reminds me of how some mechs in Battletech exist to show players how *not* to build a mech, such as the Charger, or to fill out a roster rather than actually be effective, such as the Hoplite.
Not everything in a universe has to be amazing, and can be notable and beloved for being bad, a poor fit, or a concept that just doesn't work in practice. And that's entirely okay.
You get it! Yes, to think that Starfleet is always perfect just isnt logical ;) And of course, Star Trek has always been a mirror for present day... :)
Starfleet Command: “The Constitution class is showing its age and we’ve lost a few of them already. This is not good, it makes us look bad to the Federation member worlds and the Galaxy at large. Let’s build a ship in the Constitution design style that’s stronger and more efficient.”
San Francisco Fleet Yards: “May we present the Federation class dreadnaught. A class that will be ready for anything the Galaxy throws at it. We can wipe the smug looks off the Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, and Tholians.”
Starfleet Admiralty: “Well that’s impressive, it certainly seems stronger than the Constitution. However this ship is more geared to being a Battleship, not an explorer. What we need is something that while yes can handle itself better in emergencies than the Constitution class, it must also be an able Explorer: faster, more powerful, more efficient, better shields, excellent scientific facilities.”
Fleet Yards: “Admirals, Federation council allow us to present, the Atlas. I think you’ll find it’ll meet your needs. A new explorer, more powerful yet more efficient than the Constitution and Federation classes.
Command: “Okay looks good, let’s order 12 of them.”
Command: “What the hell is wrong with this ship, the phasers deplete faster than the Constitution and Federation classes. The shields are much weaker, the power output is too strong for this thing to handle. To make things worse, the Altas was nearly destroyed due to the warp core and its inability to maintain speeds higher than warp 9. Explain yourselves!”
Fleetyards: “Um well sir, it’s like you said the core is just too damned strong for the atlas to handle. We designed the phasers to be channeled through the main engines. They should have been able to recharge as quickly or better than the Constitution and Federation. We’ll go back and try again.”
Admiralty: “Oh you’ll do better than that, you’ll build no more of those death traps. You’ll quickly downgrade the existing ships and work to create something better, that TRUELY is better. What about the Miranda class? Why not use some of the advancements of that to make a Constitution refit?”
SF Naval Yards: “We can do that, the Enterprise is due back from her five year mission before too long.”
Bottom line, when you overthink your designs they become overblown and over complicated. As Scotty would say, “The more they Overthink the plumbing the easier it is the stop up the drain.”
He very nice Video. Like the The Atlas Class.
Thank you very much! :)
Aw, no love for the Atlas? She's one of my favorites in STO, lol.
I actually like most things about the class, but to me, it simply never made any sense...
Id love to see Videos about the Gemini Class and the Chimera/Manticore Classes and what narrative you come up with
Dont worry, they are coming :)
Would like to see a showdown between an Atlas and Federation class (if the Atlas had been a success). Both are gorgeous designs too.
Love the Atlas! My TOS character in STO uses it and sweet mamba jamba it's a beast of a ship.
Imagine if one of these ships got to the point of having its space frame built at Yard 39 right before the systems Sun decided to become a bit testy. What advancements and fixes could a 25th century Starfleet Corp of Engineers impart to this unlucky Duck...
I was thinking about that while watching the video. Imagine if one of these bad boys were to be "found" at yard 39...🤔 A modern day SCE might be able to fix up its problems and show the true potential for this design.
A very interesting narrative for this ship; certainly echos issues that real world military hardware encounter, especially when money and government contracts are involved, with the final product being lackluster at best and downright broken at worst.
Yes, that's exactly what I was going for... After all, to think that Starfleet is always perfect just isnt logical ;) And of course, Star Trek has always been a mirror for present day... :)
And I love how coherent Tri‘s stories are! 👍🏻
I love this. I have the Atlas Class on STO, and I have no issues with her... The USS Diesel has so many modern game upgrades... Weapons, consoles... She's a Superior Ship.
Those combined nacelles look absolutely fire, more ships need to be like it ngl.
Also, if we combine different bits of head canon from other trek games as well, it could be said that when the Federation class and Atlas classes failed, it paved the way for another federation design to fill the battleship role. The Proxima class from Star Trek Legacy. Third time’s the charm, eh?
Fantastic narrative for a fantastic looking ship. It's too bad that it failed so completely. Thanks for another great video.
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff :)
A better video AND a better story!
Thank you so much Doug!~
I was recently wondering why Starfleet never built ships with multiple warp cores. I hadn't considered that too much power would be an issue.
That's what Im here for, to offer explanations for the unexplainable ;)
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics We thank you for your service =)
Lol Thank you! Lol
Wasn't the NX class refit a dual warp core design?
Yes it was, but it was a special case where the factors that made the Atlas Class fail, actually worked in it's favor!
What I really love. Is how this story kind of mirrors the British tank built for WW2 but designed by WW1 veterans. The TOG.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well informatively explained and executed in every detail way shape and form possibly provided indeed on the Atlas class starship's and the purpose of the design and its primary purpose and functions and abilities and so forth indeed!,👌.
Glad you liked it! Thank you SO much :)
PSA: if you want to build a dedicated dreadnought, the bridge goes as deep INTO the hull as possible, NOT on top of it!
LOL
That's the hidden joke. All the blueprints show the Bridge on top, and everyone thinks that's where it is, but that is actually just an IMAX movie theater. The actual Bridge is on the *bottom* of the primary hull, with the photon banks and phaser emitters around it. That way all the enemy ships are trying to get at the movie theater thinking its the Bridge.
A few TOS episodes hint, as Kirk says "Bridge" but the lit up panel shows the turbolift is moving *down* instead of up.
I love this design. This just jumped into my top 5 Starfleet vessels 🙂
Thank you Lucy I Love you ❤️ for saving Star Trek
Oh gosh the Atlas class looks nice but the 4 warp nacelles...
Yes, not a fan... LOL
Awesome video! The head cannon makes me sad because I like the ship but it makes sense and as you say, its Star Trek Fun.
I love this class... mostly because it is an adaptation of the MAGNIFICIENT Concorde class (my favorite STO ship)... I d'on't remember you doing a video on it... if you ever get to it, I'll be SO VERY happy to watch it (even if I watch all your videos anyways ;-) )
This is supposed to be a *fanfic,* … yet there wasn't even one Caitian Cat Girl in a miniskirt for all the nekomimi Weebs.
I considered it, but did not want to over shadow the Atlas Class :P
Yes! I have this ship in STO it's perfect!
The Atlas Class Prototype Dreadnought is still my favorite beta canon TOS ship design, but then again I will always put the TOS and TMP era aesthetic styles at the top of my list of Star Trek design styles.
The Atlas was still a cool looking ship .
Of course it is... I dont make these types of videos as a slight against the design, but rather to enrich the expanded universe!
Yes, Yes!
:)
Awesome video keep up the great work
Ahhhh, my baby in STO until I got my hands on the legendary Miranda variant. Solid boat, would recommend
I wouldn't mind having one. A go between a Heavy Cruiser and a Dreadnought.
Outstanding narrative. This happened in history as well. Designs were put into production straight off the drawing board only to fail. The Germans built an entire production run of the ME 210 only to find out it was areodynamicly unstable and worthless as a fighter plane.
One of my favorite TOS ships, not even just from STO.
I just noticed that the atlas looks a LOT like the Paradiso class and her variants, like a 23c version.
Great video bud!
I love it!
I love my Atlas in STO.
Atlas is a beautiful design that should be "revamped" and used in future stories . Has Starfleet ever tried a larger Miranda class ship ? I envision a Miranda but with a Stargazer style thicker saucer section with a rectangular frame replacing the silly roll bar . A Miranda could carry up to four small Defiant style attack ships attached to that frame and be a self contained task force ! In case you haven't noticed I'm a huge fan of the Miranda !
Have you played Star Trek online recently? I think the MIranda has now become the most kitbashable ship class on the game.
What happened to the 32 Century story of the JamesT Kirk, Constitution, and Matthew Decker. I really liked those stories.
Ah, the Edsel of starships... surprised starfleet didn't open dealerships specifically for the Atlas before it even launched! 😉
I didn't like TOS ships design. Until I see Atlas. I love it, it is gorgeous and beautiful. I got it in STO, and I do not agree with your story (your data banks have too be contamineted by Romulan virus or something!).
My Atlas works perfectly... ok, ok after lunch my crew need one year too polish it, but now...works great (but secondary warp core can't work on more then 5,6% of it's nominal power), no problem with warp speeds (up to Warp 11,36), over all 109,3% better then Constitution!
Man, Starfleet really dropped the ball on this one. This was very beautiful and powerful starship.
It's good to hear that Starfleet needs an occasional snap back
As soon as I saw this ship in ST:O I knew I needed it! Even though I like the Federation class dreadnought for pure nostalgia, it is admittedly pretty ugly. The Atlas is just way more aesthetically pleasing in every way
Saucer looks like one from the Chicago class model
The Atlas Class was a cautionary warning... the Galaxy Class was a cushionary warning.
The atlas is slick, but i'd have rather had a updated federation class in STO.. nice video. I like beta/head canon on here, its good.. aligns with some of my own head canon.. also read the book "Dreadnought!" its like 300 pages ish and its worth the read.
😊
id love to see this desgn done with 24th centery tech
I’d like to see the atlas class in action
when u take into acount the worms from tng arived around this time make me think it was sabotaged
Can someone tell me the name of this song being played in the background?
Handy class if you want to find somewhere......
Ba doom Tssss
Yeah, I was wondering why you did not mention the fact that the Stellar Cartography data files on the Atlas were unmatched by any other class until many years later. 😜
I love that your stories make beta and alfa canon connect more smoothly.
Sometimes the ideas in the minds of designers surpass the ability of available technology to make it happen. I believe this combined with politics doomed the Atlas class to its eventual fate. Just imagine what a powerful ship this could've been given the time to get it right.
You definitely get it :)
The ship itself looks pretty awesome. However with almost every new system based on the duel warp core and failing, it's an unfortunate situation. Well as they say in life, you win some you lose some. Great narrative though.
Is it weird how I want to see a story, were the crew of one of this starship were able to make it work without the downgrade
Phalanx class starship please.
It's a best TOS t6 Star trek online star ship
Too bad STO can't use other existing designs like the Proxima or Ark Royal class
Great video, and it makes sense in the timeline. However, you could have put a little positive spin on it for one. If you look at the designs it seems the step between Constitution III [enterprise TMP] and the Excelsior class and some of the designs do carry over like the thickened neck and secondary hull. But, bigger isn't always better. Take the Scott Class Cruisers from STO, they look familiar to this design. Perhaps if given proper technical help they'd have been a supplement to the Constitution Class as a CNC ship for fleet actions, or exploring space. In a somewhat historical sense the Constitution Class [Iowa Class] while the Atlas Class could've worked as like the Montana class was supposed to, but was never built.
Not everything in life ends up Happy Snappy... A positive spin would cheapen the reality and the story, making it in to Fan Service! They tried, it failed!
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Okay, I get that the Atlas class was a tale of warning. You did say that there was some carry over to the next ship, the Excelsior. There is a couple of ships in the Starfleet that the admiralty just scoffed at. For the TOS era, the Anton Class but by the time of TMP, the evolution becomes the Miranda and future workhorse of the fleet. The Consulate Class during the Ambassador's era actually did better than its the counterpart that it was modeled after. And so forth, the big problem is how to convey that to the people. One of the best design stories that you could do in the future is the Excelsior beyond the TMP era, and into the TNG era where the story would not be so good. Another tale of warning, being too dependent on a frame for too long. It's one of Starfleet's major problems. The Connie for 40 years, Excelsior for 120, while the Ambassadors only had 20 years, and the Miranda for 160 years.
Bet a TMP refit would look amazing.
The story certainly fits the greater narrative of your other Truth and Myth videos and works to why the class might not be common. Still, I do enjoy the TOS style design of the Atlas and it is a shame how meta the console it comes with is in STO because another TOS-era alt or two would not mind also having one to wander around in.
I like the design, just it never really made sense to me!
You aught to look unto the Ticonderoga and its Refit as seen in the Star Trek Legacy video game. Legacy was the first game that all 5 captains ( at time of production in the mid 2000s) were voiced by their actors.
I know, I played the game when it came out originally ;) :P
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics I was nuts for that game! Still has online support, I downloaded a boatload of molded ships and fan designs... but I was a sucker for the Ticonderoga!
First! It's a wee baby Connie. Awwww
LOL Actually 5th, but still a great accomplishment :)
And hardly a baby Connie as it's twice the size of it LOL
This parallels the story of the USS Tritium project, as told in the 1979 "Star Trek - Space Flight Chronology" book. The Tritium class was intended to supercede the Horizon & Daedalus classes, during the latter half of the 22nd century. However, the theorised high warp speeds that the coaxial tri-nacelle generated warp field, was expected to deliver, didn't occur. Instead, massive warp field eddies were created and the USS Tritium only managed a top velocity of Warp Factor 3 (27c).
I love my sto Atlas Dreadnought. Is it the most powerful ship in the game? No, but it is no slouch, that's for sure. It is by far my favorite ship in my roster, though. The design aesthetic is the epitome of Trek, in my humble opinion. And it fits in nicely with my current Captain's Log game that I've set in the Four Year's War.
I am SO happy that it works for you! Of course the rest of the multiverse, is another story 😜
Why did starfleet not tried upgrading at least 1 atless class ship to consituion 2 mirenda class tech
Because it was a complete failure!
As i recall from star trek tmp techially enterpise new warp core failed till mr spock came aboard to prgram a new rebalance to warp core intermix power field. Even with atlas failer so bad satrfleet would of never sent then to do back water work the frames were too weak to even handle back water work in safer sectors. How i would of fix atlas would of been swtcg to 1 warp core maybe have secondary core as back up. Drop 2 of the 4 nacelles i faviour constitution 2 warp nacelles even if atlas were still less quick then consitution 2 they cpuld still go out ther exploring or aiding the connie 2 fleet with jobs
The core didnt fail, it needed adjustments, so you are remembering incorrectly... The flaws with the Atlas Class could NOT be fixed!
To me, NCC 1900 belongs to the USS Albatross from the fan film "Chasing the Infinite Sky"
Sadly though, Beta Canon always cancels out Fan Fiction!
I liked the Atlas class the moment I saw it. It looked like so much more of a warship than the Constitution or Miranda or the later Constellation and Excelsior, and yet somehow it ended up being classed as a "Dreadnought-Carrier" which is weird. At least in STO if equipped well it can hold it's own, it's a tough ship that can take a beating and deliver it even if for some reason it's 'fighter' complement is out of action.
I saw a photo of this ship, from Star Trek online. They had christened it the USS Uhura, NCC 1932, as a tribute to Nichelle Nichols on the day she died. Are you saying that STO chose a defunct class for the USS Uhura? YIKES!
Dont be ridiculous!
My intro to the video already explains everything... Besides, I don't see anywhere where STO named one of these starships the Uhura, but even if they did, Canon has already named a Reliant Class Vessel from STO the Uhura!
Hmm! Technically speaking. This would make it a Heavy Battlecruiser. One step below the Dreadnought class! Serving as a science vessel as well as a fighting vessel.
Hmmmm! Not in the future, and not in this timeline! And dont split hairs, it isnt attractive ;) :P
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics - Hmm! It was a Etsel. Yes, you could be right. It had some theoretical positives. But several bucket loads of negatives. The twin warp engines mounted one over each other. Probably cancelled each other out. The intended outcome was theoretically interesting but structure perhaps, was it's undoing. In galactic terms it was a clunker!
Seems to me that's a design they could have fixed. (Like, just throttling back the secondary warp power core seems like it ought to have worked, if they couldn't have just beefed up those other power systems. )
Except they couldn't and didnt... Sometimes, things just dont work no matter what you do!
The STO TOS designs are beautiful and its too bad this ship couldn't get the love it deserves,
Awwwwwwwwwww :(
Still prefer the proxima class as the experimental TOS dreadnought. However the atlas is still one of my favorite ships in star trek online.
so the big problem is fixable by replacing the two warp drives with one standard config, maybe a wee bit bigger the constitution. i like the design, a short refit meh away from awesome
That doesnt fix the problem at all, as then, it still wouldn't have the power/ specs as it was intended... Making it an even bigger failure!
Warp factor 10 would have seriously stressed the shields and bulkheads, so giving this ship warp factor 12 would’ve scattered the remains of the ship across several light years. Even Scotty would never had signed for on this upgrade.
Not as it was designed!
After flying the Atlas in STO, this video does the class such a dishonor as ingame it's easyally one of the top 20 ships ingame, top 10 for tank ships.
In YOUR opinion, not the majorities... ;)
Although the Atlas Class failed. It remained in the data banks for years. Until The technology caught up and improved. Finding the designs one day a starship designer was inspired by them and they designed the Chimera Class.
Im sorry, but the Atlas Class story ends here... Put simply, it was a flawed design that was burried and forgotten aside from the lessons it taught Starfleet... And had no influence on any future designs!
The only reason I'm not fond of your headcannon is that I have one of these ships in STO and it's an excellent ship for PVE *or* PVP.
As the intro explains, it is not connected to STO at all... STO, though I love it, is unrealistic when it comes to Starship Portrayals and Performance... This story takes an interesting design, and makes it far more realistic with the caveat that not all technologies designed are going to work with everything being sunshine and rainbows!
The atlas was the original defiant class
I wouldnt say that at all... The Defiant was a little and maneuverable powerhouse... The Atlas Class is a HUGE, intended to be powerhouse, that simply wasnt...
I want to be captain of the Atlas Class USS Titicaca
Yet Another FAILURE?
Can Starfleet Not Build Any Successful Designs?
The Neck on the Connie has, unfortunately, always been laughable. I ❤ 1701-A
I think the Atlas could have worked, just needed more work. But technology marched past it.
Sometimes, things just never work no matter how hard you try!
Sounds like the Atlas class was Starfleet's beginnings into multiple redundancies in it's ship design.
As far as it's "failures", sounds like a forbearer of the DS9's Defiant class. Over-powered to the point of it wanting to tear itself apart, but still having teeth.
Not even close to the Defiant to be honest, as that ship wasnt on the verge of a warp core breach, and none of the teeth in the Atlas Class worked... It was more of an Edsel!
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics Then again, the Defiant did not have two warp cores either. Either way, both ships were over-powered for their time.
I am surprised that somw space junkie after wolf 359 did not thought to take a look at atlas class thingking how cool would thos ship be with defiant class warp core and reforced hual amd phaser upgrades
@@dustind3960 Those starship were FAR to out of date to be considered for anything! Spaceframes, Plating and Technology would mean that a Failed Ship like the Atlas would need to be completely unbuilt in order to be rebuilt to standards... It would be a waste of time, and it's failure would make it a non issue!
The biggest flaw of the Atlas Class was also the hardest one to properly address- it sucked.
So the great experiment before the great experiment. Almost back to back botches.
Almost, but truth is though Transwarp Failed, that was more of an expected outcome... The Atlas Class was expected to succeed! But didn't...
A fail is still a failure doesn't matter if was made to work or fail.
That isnt really true either... As if you're working on something that you KNOW might fail, hit's you very differently then working on something you KNOW will succeed!
It just reminds me of what I learned about the Ford Edsel or Yugo.
