Horse Tales is a game from Aesir Interactive that has was launched in a completely broken and unfinished state. Although they have fixed a lot of problems, the game is not even close to being completed.

At least in the sims you can create and play as any age stage without additional pay. I think toddlers weren't initially part of the game on release either? Which makes Aesir look even more incompetent now tbh

I find it absolutely ridiculous that they prioritize paid DLCs over bug fixes. Not just that, but these DLCs consist of content that any other self-respecting studio would incorporate as free updates. What's next, day/night cycle DLC, new horse minigames DLC? Does Aesir think they're like EA who can afford to milk their players in every title? Highly doubt they aim for huge profits from these additional purchases, it's not like they fund any base game development.
I feel like Horse Tales is both improving and worsening, at the same time. I find it sick the fact SIMPLE horse game features cause you to pay; I personally do not like to pay for virtual currency and it is very frustrating to even spend a penny on a game I might just abandon for another. Other then that, it's okay... I wouldn't say its good nor horrible. I'll see what happens soon, let's just hope the owners realise their horrid mistake.

Wow… the funniest part for me personally, is that I had pre-ordered whatever deluxe edition of this from amazon to get it day one. But it was delayed by amazon/the devs (not actually sure) and I ended up just refunding and not playing Horse Tales. Dodged a bullet there, it seems!

This is so sad. I thought they were getting better. I was just considering playing this game again and seeing if the improvements made a difference. Considering the foal DLC, I wouldn’t play this game at all and give this greedy company recognition that they don’t deserve. The more we play this game, the more terrible DLC they will release.
I might just play the game anyway, but in off-line mode. With steam, offline mode means that the game doesn’t sync with the cloud and no game data is updated,I think.

Im glad the game has got more updates. I was upset with what we got. And I think that I was upset rightfully. Though, the game is really greedy.

I still feel silly for the hype I felt when I pre-ordered. I came in with such optimism as I followed The Mane Quest, and naively thought "Wow, the writer who dissected horse games and even had presentations about the state of horse games is working on this!! This is going to be something we have all been waiting for!"
Then I got it, and it was on the Switch and for some reason it's all blurry even though the Switch should be able to handle the solid cartoon style graphics
I played on until realising the paddocks were empty, I didn't want to run around all the time for ingredients, and the fame system is essentially useless (I hoped winning races would get me money to buy resources so I don't have to google locations and run through corridors all the time)
The paddock should have been better on release. The foals should have been there!

This is one of the games I feel most mixed on. The world is SO fun to run around in and I love galloping and sliding on the horse. There’s some really great ideas in the game… but it’s broken. Having to reset your save file should not be a common issue. The game being borderline unplayable is what holds it back and it’s a damn shame.
I feel like one of the biggest reasons all of these horse games fail one right after the other is because of greed. These games lock off basic mechanics/plotlines to a story behind a paywall, or they keep making areas of their community exclusive to people that pay and people that don't. SSO is the biggest example recently, forcing players to pay more for SC and just recently they upped the pricing to $100 USD in the US. $100 USD!? Either the devs of games like this have a huge ego or they've gotten so greedy they're willing to scare off their players.
I played this when it was released for maybe 2 weeks. So many issues, I deleted it and never looked at it again. I hope they enjoy my 40 bucks. 🐎

I’d love to see you review Rival Stars! It would be a nice palate cleanser for sure, as, even though it isn’t perfect, it’s still loads better than other horse games on the market
Oh damn, just about fell out of my chair when my steam discussion about the broken cob tack flashed across the screen! I'm so glad you've brought attention to this, I felt like I was the only one who noticed or cared about it. I was pretty disappointed I paid extra money for it seeing as it's supposed to be a cosmetic. It's such a shame this game ended up so unpolished seeing how much potential it has. It has so many unique little features that make it special, and you can't enjoy them because its so broken!

Overall though, the game was just a mess to begin with. It's sad, like you said, there was a lot of potential here and fixes they made does help the game, but man, it's still such a far cry from what it needs to be. Thanks for checking out the vid! ♥
As a game owner, I'd love to pose a question to everyone!
My community actually ASKED for the in-game purchases to be cosmetic-only to avoid "pay to win" situations.
We're a very small team with a free-to-play browser game. Nearly everything is earnable in-game and we're very focused on never being pay-to-win. We never want the game to feel unfair or biased toward players who have deeper pockets, but of course we need to be able to pay our staff and ad revenue does not do this.
What would be the best ways to avoid looking greedy while still making sure we can pay the people developing our game?
I fully understand (and agree) with you on the foals DLC, but Rattles mentions the idea of cosmetic item purchases being "greedy", but that's what our community is specifically asking for. It makes me worry that as our game grows people may view US as greedy developers, rather than 2 small co-owners paying out of pocket primarily for a game that's paying 3 coders a livable wage (and not getting paid ourselves while we're doing all the art, advertising, writing, set-up, event hosting, etc haha).
Hey! Thanks for watching the video! Seeing game devs taking an active interest in the community's needs/wants is always awesome to see! As for MTA, I think it's a bit of a double-edged sword. Having these cosmetics can be fine, and you'll see a good profit, but it's how you handle it that matters. The fact that your players will be able to get those items in-game through hard work already mitigates the extra expenses people have to pay for your game.
The reason I, personally, despise MTA is because a company is expecting me to pay extra on top of the amount I already paid. And more often than not, these 'live service' games are hollow, shells of games with little content and lots of grind. Which becomes exhausting and really, is just a terrible thing to do to your audience. Furthermore, even if the game is free it's usually cheap, and leans heavily on MTA to make up for the fact that it is free. And then, on top of that, the amount I have to pay to buy about half of the cosmetics in the game will cost me about the same as a tripple A title.
It does, eventually, become greedy if you're not careful.
But, if you can find a good balance between game and MTA then try it. Just know that community must come first in live service games. You, of course, must make money, but don't do so at the expense of your audience ♥

We've really tried to make sure our MTAs are affordable (a few dollars or even cents here and there for small things and we check in with our community regularly to make sure they're comfortable with the prices). I definitely see what you mean about the quality. I used to work for a game where the content players paid for was intentionally created to be nicer than the free in-game content, and it's something we've worked hard to avoid because it seems scummy.
When we're a little more put together next year I was actually going to reach out to you privately to see if you might be willing to give your input. I know you focus very heavily on console games and can be very critical at times, but it's good to hear what needs to be improved. I hear so often what my players like about my game, but I sometimes worry that it could exist within a vacuum and I could be missing what could make my game great rather than "great for a few people".

Just got the deluxe version on sale-
I’d love to make a horse game of my own one day, so it was really useful to have the following notes of what sparked excitement for me and what was a flop…
Stuff I loved
- The genuine excitement at tacking and catching the Emerald Valley Devil
- That it has breeding
- The horses have little personality traits
- customising. Getting to customise ranch, outfits etc
- the same wild horses appear at times haha I’ll be in the field and like (🙄 oh for Pete sake Libby not you again) 😆
Stuff I didn’t like
- the quest orders were too unstructured (sometimes I’d have found and done something like breed or smithed ingots before so it was weird doing the intro quests for them after)
- Tacky tack… I love that the kids who play can have bright, fun colours but can there be more than two sensible English tack options for the sad 27 year old who can’t afford a horse in real life..?
- Collecting materials… I’d love other ways other than running into the same lines every day
- The area feels so sparse and empty.. like this is a horse island right? Well, the salesman and richest family have an empty corral/estate 24/7
- breaking immersion (the cut scene kept swapping out my horse for my starter horse…)
- customising too hard (I hated my starter outfit and tent and spent so long having to put up with it)
- Taming is too easy and no challenge. I get a total build up of walking up to each horse and inspecting the stats… After the excitement of finding one with decent stats, the taming is super anticlimactic… Don’t be scared to disappoint me as a player! Let me loose haha
Like, there’s a lot of good information I gathered from this game. Hopefully Horse Takes walks so a future horse game can run.
I appreciate the update on this, I feel so seen. I did buy it for black Friday and I have been having fun with it so far, but I had seen your video last year and was wondering how you feel about it after the updates because it's playing well for me so far-but I'm not very far in the game yet!

If you thought the microtransactions were bad in this game, you should explore Horse Riding Tales that's on mobile.
Most horses are paywalled.
The currency is so unbelievably expensive. My jaw actually dropped when I saw their prices.
I both love and hate this game. I started playing it again once the DLC dropped and it created a game breaking bug where I couldn't continue the party mission. Thankfully, someone in the discord server gave me their completed save file so I could explore the rest of the world that was closed off to me. I'm hoping that they update it again... which will probably be in a few months to years, seeing as it took them this long to do the latest update and DLC.
It has always bothered me how we've had 3D games since the late 90s and we still have issues of bad camera function. You'd think game developers would've find a couple of presets by now that could be applied to most games.
Unfortunately, don't even get me started on the switch graffics...
I understand that it cannot possibly look as good as the pc version, but I was so upset when I first opened the game after buying it on sale, knowing I can't return it.
I got used to it somewhat later on, but the gameplay can be downright frustrating more often than any game should.
I love the horses, the races, even the story is fine, but it dissapointed more than I'd like to admit overall.

I’ll admit, I never fully played Horsetales, but purely because of how horrible my experience was. I bought Horsetales for Switch in a local EB games store and being shocked at how atrocious it was on my console. The amount of lag and glitches made the game basically unplayable - I couldn’t even control my horse properly. Even Pokemon Violet currently has way less issues with performance for me.
I was lucky that I had gotten a discount so I only paid $30 for it and they also very conveniently told me about their refund policy. I really didn’t want to return it since I felt bad and I thought the gameplay had some potential, but the lag made it unplayable. I returned it after a week with only 5 hours in terms of playtime.
Whenever I see pictures of this game I think about picking it up again and give it another chance. But then I was 60 seconds into your vid and knew "nah..." 🙈
Im still feeling so bitter about paying 60 bucks for this horrible mess. And I really feel mad about a certain person from a certain FB group talking me down, lying to my face and sugarcoating EVERYTHING when I first talked about the bad state of this game when it released. Everything about this game just f*cks me up and that's quite unusual, because I usually have no problem with moving on from bad games. But I guess the fact that I got lied to by a person I thought I could trust plays into it.

Aww this game looks so cute though. I love the graphics and art direction. The movements, when working as they should, look really nice. The world looks fun to explore. If they focus on fixing it this game will be awesome
They basically promised the best horse game and then slapped us in the face. The DLC too for foals is such a EA move omfg, I'm tired of these devs treating us horse players like this because they know there's barely any horse games vs back then being released. Not counting those in development.
Its like it got better and worse somehow, like its so nice some things were fixed but the dlc stuff is icky. I do not enjoy the greedy aspect of horse games because 1. I am unfortunatly an adult and have other things to pay for 2. It always seems to be a lot of money for a small small thing, like what the sims doea or star stable and 3. I buy model horses and i can do so much more with them then with some horse games. I would rather buy avatar frontiers of pandora full price, its like 10 dollars less than star rider.

Got stuck on the first race, just hated the controls in general and never found out how to brush my horse so I never touched it again and regret spending money on it. Maybe I am just too dumb for it :D . But I am enjoying my 4th playthrough of RDR2 where I want to try every horse in this run. :)

I just want a good horse game! Is that too much to ask? As of now SSO is still the only “horse game” that’s appealing to me, even with its flaws. Red dead is a game that isn’t based around horses but has great horse mechanics, thus I play very frequently. Every horse game I’ve seen come out as of late has crashed and burned and it is so sad.
I was stuck in those rubble walls on a trail, rode up a cliff and I don't know what I've already did on my ranch because 90% of the time the buildings aren't loading. Can't find my horses, don't know how many I have and I spend more time in a maze than I've ever did in RL. I also have a bunch of dirty horses
I just want a good horse game like SSO that clearly isn't SSO where I can have all the Arabians, show jumping sport horses, and dressage Spanish breeds my little horse heart craves for. Is that SO much to ask for? Without so much drama, problems, bugs, and is completed that won't cost me an arm and a leg.
Horse game companies sure love their buggy games, even big ones like sso have like 100+ bugs at a time, makes playing super miserable 💀

15 dollars for a game that doesnt even work???? goddamn i payed 20 for rdr2 man what the hell (i get that its a different think cuz one is by a biggass company and the other one is by a small team but its still a crazy difference between a highly intricuite game that you can spend HOURS in and a game that doesnt even work properly).
I was gifted this game by my boyfriend, since i was playing non stop, but seeing the DLC keep being released i'm just enourmously sad that i fell onto what feels like a scam for the first time.
I play on my switch and it’s so fuzzy and buggy it’s unplayable, it’s so sad cause I was really looking forward to this.

I thought about getting the foal DLC... but... breeding is tedious enough because of the items required and I really don't want to add more tedium by adding babies. It just... I'd just rather not.
Am I suprised? No. Am I dissapointed and saddened that the curse of the horse game has struck yet another promising project? Absolutely.

I really wish that maybe just the horse breeds were dlc, if even that. They really should keep gameplay to free updates. I would get back into my play through I finished a few months ago because the game is actually really fun, but it’s just a cash grab.
At the every least I hope they fix the game and make the good updates free instead of charging people for them. Not completely against paid dlc if it’s actually something really good and not something that should have been in the base game
Ok so I picked this title up on my Switch quite a while ago, and never got far enough into it to start breeding horses before I got distracted, and stopped playing.
SO, with that in mind, I have to ask: If there weren't any FOALS present in the game until now (via DLC) then...how did breeding work?? Did it just not do anything? Or did you just get a random, full-grown 'child' with mixed characteristics of the parents...? I'm really. Really confused.
If you didn't have the foals ready for release- why not just take the whole breeding function out, and save it for an update (or DLC pack) so that it didn't feel so...haphazard and disjointed?

this video reminded me that i paid 50€ (55usd) for this stupid game upon release cause i was so excited about it........ i am still sadge. Had the game been properly working from the get go I'd probably have purchased the dlcs but there is no way in hell I'm giving these greedy scammers anymore of my money. That 50€ was more than enough for the broekn game + dlcs =,)
I really love the game. It simply fits my role-play-driven gaming style. But the fact they made foals a paid DLC, which didn't add that much gameplay simply ruined my will to play, and I haven't touched the game since. I was happy at first that they are adding more content, but if they plan to make every new piece content a DLC, I'm out. It's the main reason I stopped playing Planet Zoo. Every month there's a new DLC which adds a few animals. This feels painfully similar.

It seems like poor planning on what it takes to truly make a successful game happened here. As they released the game at a time when tests where supposed to be done, and now are panicking over not making enough money since launch and thus feel the need to make every 'new feature' locked behind a pay wall to squeeze out any money they can to make their own money back after this game 'failed'
So many horse games fall for this trap, i think because so many are made as their 'first big game' and thus they think they can make a open world rpg breeding horses game on first try in 2 or so years "easily". Not realizing that games with such complex game mechanics have HUGE teams and years of experience to support it.
i have the switch version bc of the limited edition version w the stickers n patches n extra in game stuff,,, i loved the idea. but the switch' graphics quality is sooooooooooooo poor i stopped playing bc i CANNOT see what i was looking at. im tempted after watching this video to buy the steam version but do not want to pour more money into broken horse games as i do that enough already

The sad part to me is that some of the basics of this game seem so fun. I like the art style a lot, i like the varied map, the races look fun, etc. But this is a dang mess just full stop.
This is a beta game. Those floating and empty windows alone are red flags for the care the devs want to put in.

Dang. It's too bad they prioritized greed over finishing the game. I was thinking about buying the game anyway after your first vid, since I liked the realistic genetics and was willing to overlook some bugs. Definitely not supporting them now.
You shouldn't recommend ANYONE to buy this game at all regardless of how much they like it. Purely due to their awful predatory business practices i.e microtransanctions in a PAID game.

this game looks beautiful and the horses are so cute, its a shame its such a mess (and so overpriced) or i might've been interested. seems like horse AND dinosaur games are just cursed or something. guess i'll just have to stick with modded rdr2 and rival stars. i tried playing sso once because i LOVE the horses, but the controls were confusing and i didn't really like it being geared towards girls only. as a trans guy it made me feel really out of place lol.
