- For this week's Sabaton Saturday, I left it up to the members on Patreon to vote on which song I was doing next, and "Carolus Rex" was the clear winner. In this Double Reaction, I first take a look at a lyric video for the English version, and then we re-visit The Great Tour for a performance of the Swedish version of the song in Stockholm, Sweden!

There’s some debate on if the Swedish version is better than the English version. All I know is that “I was chosen by Heaven. Say my name when you pray” is one of the most badass lines ever written.
imo the swedish version has better verses but the chorus is better in english
Yes it's badass. It's also what they completely believed.
I think for me I enjoy both the same - but just for different reasons. I enjoy the English version because I can understand it - but the Swedish version just makes you feel pumped.
That line in the swedish version is
Krigets konst jag behärskar
Låt mitt namn sprida skräck
Which in english would be something like
The art of war I master
Let my name spread fear
I like both a lot tbh
Lyric wise it's definitely up there. But a line in certain parody is even more badass: Feel free to pray to your god. But spoiler alert - I won't be listening.
A fun historic note: Finland was a part of Swedish Empire during the time period of the album so bringing Apocalyptica on the stage isn't a random act.
you mean slaves to swedish.
@@seppoharkkonen5766 Sadly, you're probably right... 😟 You're better off without us (Swedes) in your face! 😄 Especially when it comes to music... 😉
@@lionfromthenorth4580 its just funny to me that its another part of history that everyone overlooks, that we were also slaves.
@@seppoharkkonen5766Learn your history ffs, finland was a part of Swedish kingdom for almost 700 years and did not exist before that as a country, it was treated the same way, as the rest of the population, in both good and bad as the rest of the country, if you believe otherwise you are a lame-ass victim-seeking crying baby with no brain im sorry to say.
Finns are fantastic people... out of all my friends growing up, the most reliable and caring friends I had were Finns or Finland-Swedes.
They werent the coolest, richest or most prominent but when shit got tough they were the first ones to line up.
Massive #Respect to my northern brethren
My husband and I went to the Portland leg of this tour and Joakim gave a young boy his glasses cause it was his birthday and then we all sang for him and it was so awesome.
Oh that’s awesome!
I think I was there and saw that. Late 2019? That's when they came to Portland, OR last.
@@EriahSylverstone oct 19
Oh I remember a guy writing a comment about that, it was his son. So cute
Can’t beat Sabaton Saturdays. Love it.
🤘🤘🤘
He is actually beating the snare drum like a military drummer would have done at the time of Carolus Rex.
Plus Sabaton themselves are wearing coats that the Karoliner themselves would have worn
Good catch!
Sabaton makes me, a freaking Syrian, proud to somehow be Swedish 😅
Well, Carolus Rex was stranded in the middle east for many years, might be a distant relative? 😉
Added fun fact: Allegedly he (probably more likely his personal chef) learned to make meatballs in Turkey, and brought the recipe back to Sweden. That is the supposed origin of swedish meatballs
Wow, that’s wild!
@@galeris if that's true, that has to be one of the best food stories ever XD
though I thought he was staying somewhere in Ottoman Balkans, not exactly middle east, but not too far off I suppose^^
What a coincidence... Sabaton's newly released music video "The Royal Guard", actually pictures a piece of an event that took place in Bender during that time.
When listening to Sabaton we are all from whatever country they are singing about!
Time for No Bullets Fly, the animated video, awesome song and the story behind that will break you, bring tissues
Absolutely agree, Tank NEEDS to do the collab video between Sabaton and YarnHub when he reacts to No Bullets Fly.
Ooohh. Tank is going to need tissues to protect him against the onion ninjas. That song summons onion ninjas like none other.
After that there's a live video of the song from a tour he hasn't done before! (Heroes on Tour)
5:23 The line reference the fact that during Charles's coronation he entered the church already with the Crown on his head so the Bishop(the church) could not crown him. And he also refused to swear the Royal oath as he did not need to be accountable to anyone but God himself
If you love Sabaton you’re a honorary Swede! 😊🇸🇪
Thank you
Sweet thank you can i join you hockey team to make you lose to the canadians. I really am intigued by swedish history after listining to sabaton though.
Not a Swede, but a Norwegian, which means I can understand most of the Swedish version. 100% prefer the Swedish one.
As a Norwegian I agree
No Bullets Fly next. Be sure to watch the animated version by Yarnhub...bring a tissue or two.
After that, Fields of Verdun official music video. You want some production? There's some production!
Best wishes to the fam, my guy. Stay happy, healthy, and safe. And, as always, keep calm and rock on.
After seeing Fields of Verdun on that poll, I wanted to push for Tank to do that next - but yeah, from an emotional point of view, No Bullets Fly definitely is an exceptional experience. The history behind it makes it one of the most important songs of Sabaton imo, as you don't often hear these kind of stories told in history classes where everything is/kinda has to be black and white.
Big yes to both these choices! (Put the captions on when watching the promo video for Fields of Verdun as it really made me laugh on the guitar solo!)
I didn't even know I was part Swedish until about a month ago when my sister did a DNA test. But before I learned I was part Swedish listening to the Carolus Rex album made me proud to be Swedish and I thought I wasn't Swedish.
Sabaton's music change your DNA to Swedish. :P
Hahahahahaha
@@Dragonite43 Oh man then my DNA has changed to at least 96% swedish from former german xD 🤟💪
Carl XII was the last king under the Swedish great empire, died 1718. He didn't start any war during his lifetime, he just have to defend from attackers from everywhere. He became king at 15 yrs and left home (Stockholm) for war att 17. And he never returned home. Btw his grand, grand father was the legendary Lion from the North/ Gustavus II Adolphus. GA's grandfather was Gustav Eriksson Vasa. The man who created "Livgardet", thanks Tank you're awesome and congratulations for your new familymember. Stay safe! /From Sweden with Love. Micke.
For the record - I believe Carolus Rex is their finest work. I have the release that includes a 2nd disc that has the whole thing in Swedish and I listen to them both. What a great album and this is a fabulous live interpretation. Cheers!
Thanks for introducing me to Swedish history! I’m Canadian and a 1/4 Swede. I had no know idea of that period of Swedish history before Sabaton.
Carolus father, Charles XI (Swedish: Karl XI), indoctrinated his son early on that father and son were sent from heaven and that there is no one on earth who can rule over them. Not even the church and its priests could crown Charles XII. On the day when Karl XII became king of Sweden, he put the crown on his head and walked out of the church. The priests could only watch. There are lots of exciting things to read about Charles XII's life. When he was a child, he hunted bears with clubs
Most songs of the CR album is easily the best in swedish, even alot of people who dont speak swedish think so!
I agree I prefer all the Swedish versions of Carolus Rex except for "The Carolean's Prayer" and the only reason I prefer the English version is because they sing the prayer in Swedish. I like the switch between English and Swedish in that song.
If the prayer was in English in the English version I would prefer the Swedish version.
I prefer the English version of “Killing Ground” compared to the Swedish version, but other than that, I agree.
I heard Eicca from Apocalyptica describe how their setup works. They don’t like the sound of electric cellos so they buy cheaper made cellos that still have good sound, but it doesn’t matter as much when they get beaten up on tour. They have microphones placed under the bridge of the cello and they’re connected to pedals to get the distortion. Also depending on the song, they might use different bows. Since Eicca does a lot of the rhythm, he often uses a bow with black hair (I can’t remember what it’s made of, but I believe it’s one that is used with a bass) because it grips the strings in a different way to get that riff quality.
Nice! Thanks for the info!
Makes a lot of sense given that Stringed instruments are one of the biggest examples of Diminishing returns when it comes to sound quality to price.
16:20 Agreed. As a drummer myself, I still have trouble understanding how Hannes can make playing a 90 minute set of this kind of music look as chill and effortless as a casual sunday stroll in the park.
He's at the same level of proficiency as Kai Hahto from his wife's band Nightwish.
Love the song in Swedish. Yes, Sweden has a long fantastic history. I am proud to be Swedish 😊💪🇸🇪
Fin hund du har där
@@tvaettis0653 Tack 😊 Hon är bäst 🤗❤
Hela den skivan är fantastisk iofs!
Jessica F förstår det 😍
I'm hoping to see a No Bullets Fly reaction soon....the story behind that song is as beautiful as the song is.
It needs to he the Yarnhub video.
The whole Carolus Rex album is in My opinion in a league of it's own, it's so Fu**ing amazing 💪👌🤩 This was a nice reaction, and I was on that concert in Stockholm 😃 Just in front of Chris, and I had Great evning 🤘🔥
I believe that the line "what I say was said in heaven and so it shall be done" is an actual quote he used to end arguments with his generals whenever he grew tired of them trying to change his mind.
Sabaton IS amazing to see in concert. My son took me to his 1st concert, Sabaton in St. Petersburg,FL. Oct.5,2019. BEST concert EVER!!!!! Great people, small venue. Singers b-day, pink tiara and a b-day cake from the rest of the band, LOL!
I’ve heard this song a million times and the intro STILL gives me insane goosebumps
Finally Carolus Rex! When you go to one of their shows you'll see just how powerful and fun this song is live. This song and album was my gateway to Sabaton. Back in the day, when they still sold CD's in gas stations, I bought the album (Swedish version) on a whim to have some entertainment during a long drive. And how lucky was I? Thank you for this Sabaton Saturday!
More Sabaton, hell yeah!!!
They just released the English version of Livgardet, The Royal Guard. You can do a back to back reaction of both the Swedish and English versions, the videos are amazing.
Keep them coming
Hug to the family from Portugal
The drums in this song live are unbelievable.
I am so excited! "Carolus Rex" is my favourite!
Yes! New Sabaton Saturday! Welcome back big poppa Tank!!!
This song emanates power, hubris, pride, and foreboding. While it’s not one of their most exciting anthems, it is really powerful.
The one thing I love The most about Sabaton is that they are The most humble guys you Will ever meet ☺🤘
Tank you for discovering this epic band. I really appreciate your reactions on Sabaton Saturdays.🤘🇸🇪🤘
So now that we had Winged Hussars, Carolus Rex and Swedish Pagans I think its time for The Last Stand...Its one of my favourite songs from the Last Stand album as it tells the story of the Swiss guard in 1527 during the sack of rome...Its a song they play whenever they performe in Switzerland and its a great live song every time...
Carolus Rex is my favorite Sabaton album. If you check the lyrics between the English and Swedish songs on this album, the English version is more Europe's perspective of Sweden while the Swedish version is Sweden point of view.
"I have resolved never to start an unjust war but never to end a legitimate one except by defeating my enemies"
Sabaton Saturday is back, b**ches! God, I've been missing those.
I hope you can check out "Last Stand" or "The Lost Bataillon" soon. I am pretty sure the history behind them will amaze you, especially behind the first one.
Much love to you and your small family from Germany!
The only thing you're missing is how the Swedish and English lyrics has totally different meanings... but I guess same song
In some of the songs on the album theres a huge diffrence between the Swedish and English versions, but not in this one.
Sure, its not a straight translation, but the message is the same.
Only a few of them are totally different, but each of them have a different tone or bring something else to the table than a straight up translation.
Congrats to your child Tank!!! The reference "knä om knä", probably translated to "knee by knee" was a battle method developed for Karl den 12:e elit soldiers know as Karoliner. It was a hard offensive strategy and when charging they did not fire one bullet until they where so close that they could see the white in the enemies eyes. It created mayhem and confusion and was very successful rendering a lot less soldiers to take out larger numbers of enemies. Keep up the great work with the Sasbaton vids man!
Very late to comment on the video since its two years old.
I traveled to stockholm to watch sabaton live in 2020, it was my first metal concert ever.
being there in person watching a band you love listening to is something else, especially since it was in the capital of their home country. it was awesome.
these swedish songs were emotional and magical to listen to, the whole crowd basically sung for them, in one song all the flashlights were turned on to light up the whole stadium they played in. its a memory for life.
i was in stockholm agin this year and still all the same feelings. I would recomend everyone to go to a metal concert if you havent done so.
That’s awesome! I saw them last year for the first time and they were incredible.
@@TankTheTech They are an amazing band to listen to, but even more amazing to listen to Live. Hopefully they do a Europe tour again soon
Great reaction! Love your perspective
Fun fact - Charles XII was a very smart commander. When he started the russian campaign, he was informed where the russians scouts was positioned to find out the size of the Swedish army. So when the first companies had passed he made them and the rest of following army to reroute so they ended up at the end of the army train - thus an endless ring. So the entire army marched several times infront of the scouts. This made the russian scouts to calculate an army much bigger that what the Swedish forces acutally were, and forced the russians to withdraw to get reinforcements instead of an early battle.
I still remember the first time I heard this song, the first day it came out on Spotify. The drums in the intro started and it was instant goosebumps that lasted all through the song. I immediately listened to it again. And again. And again. I think I listened to it on repeat for a solid hour, goosebumps the entire time. The intro is one of the most powerful intros I've ever heard, or never gets old and still gives me goosebumps.
I enjoyed your reaction as always, Nice to see U back.
Every song on that poll is worth checking out, especially fields of Verdun (in my opinion).
Welcome back, and congrats.
Great. Now this going to be stuck in my head for the rest of day. Thanks Tank!
If you’re swedish speaking the song is without a doubt better with swedish lyrics. Carolus Rex was the song that got me into Sabaton and is still one of my favorites to this day!
My favorite is probably Great War. Hope you react to it soon!
I don't know man, I'm Swedish and that English chorus is something else.
The Carolus Rex album is by far my favorite and the Swedish vocals make them so much better.
I hope you keep going with sabaton saturdays tank. So many good songs with chills, either in the music itself or the lyrics
I was there at that concert and it was sooo much fun. They’re amazing live🤘
As always, I love these Sabaton reactions, and this would be right up your street when it comes to the sound, with the heavy drums in the background.
I forgot to mention this album went quadruple platinum and after they started touring to promote the album they performed at arguably their best live performance at Woodstock Poland they became massive getting big sponsorship and revenues and bigger gigs which to epic albums, singles, music videos and live performances that you will go on to say this is one of the best bands you've ever heard
P.S the English and Swedish versions have two different lyrics I interpret the English version as King Charles saying why his right to rule is divine whereas the Swedish version is his troops and subjects praising how great of a king he is
Hannes from EV1 is married to Nightwish of Floor Sabaton 😂
Very nice video as always, it's great to see Sabaton Saturday back!
"I bet this is a blast for them to play live". I bet too and yes, it's a total blast to hear live!
I love the pic you chose of Floor, thanks for the laugh! XD
Just wanna wish your family all the best with the new family member arriving man, have an awesome 2021 together and thanks for managing to fit a Sabaton Saturday in your life again! ^^
Thank you!
Oh man the memories, I was there that evening. This was amazing ❤❤❤ it was lovely to be in that crowd, we sang and clapped along. This was the song that got me into Sabaton back in the day.
One of the most entertaining live bands I've seen. They made so many fans when they toured with nightwish here in the states. I'd love to see you take a dive into Heilung once you can.
Yey! Been waiting for this one 😃👌🏼 As always a great reaction to a mind blowing great band! 👌🏼💯🤗🇳🇴 I love this live version!
Welcome back Daddy Tank glad to have some Sabaton Saturday back again.
Hell yeah! Time to learn about the KING! 👑
Congrats on the birth Tank! Greetings from Sweden!
As Chase says, I feel like I was lacking a certain vitamin without these videos! One of my fav Sabaton tracks. Excellent pic choice of Floor, btw
This was epic live...I just love how down to earth and humble they were when I saw them in Cleveland a few years back. For me Carolus Rex, Bismark, and Fields of Verdun were my favorite live 🤘🏻 and they brought the tank lol
Great reaction!🤘 This song was my very first Sabaton experience and it became one of my favourite songs. The weird thing is though, that this was the only Sabaton song I listened to 2013-2018. That changed when "Bismarck" was released. I still can't believe that I didn't explore Sabaton's music earlier.. I realized that I've missed a lot! Making up for it a lot nowdays... 😁
Welcome back, Tank!!
Glad to see another one of these!
I hope your family are doing great 👍🏻
Keep on rocking ✊🏻
Con grats on your new baby. Please dont stop reacting I love Sabaton saturday!!! It feels like we experiences their music in exactly THE same way you and I and that makes me so happy! I dont know why I got so hooked om Sabaton from the beginning, I have been more of a Depeche mode girl but Sabaton got me good! I recomend Screaming eagles, the final solution, soldier of three armies and ballad of Bull!!!!! Lets go ❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations on the little one Tank! I became a father in November last year, and it blows my mind that you have time to make these videos!! Kudos man, keep it up!
i was at their concert a few days ago and it was honestly amazing, they sang happy birthday to their sound technician and also celebrated that he had been with them for 10 years that day as well as and also 10 years ago since chris joined them :)
So so happy to see back the Sabaton Saturday ! Keep goin' man and congrats for the paternity!!!!
Ps. It's quite unpopular but i think that RESIST AND BITE it's one of the best pumping song they have !
First things first, congratulations to your baby I remember it like yesterday when my first came. Although it was over 21 years ago. Good luck whit your family!!
Fun random fact, I am from Stockholm/Sweden and I visit that Arena, Hovet, in every homegame that AIK plays in. I thought it was funny that you mentioned it in one of your tankfacts 🤣🤣🤣🖤💛
as a swede, i fell obliged to tell you...
Sabaton is one of very few bands that actually sounds good in swedish.
Im not a huge fan, I do like Sabaton but it on a level where I own 0 merch and have only been to one live performance and that was because Im a personal friend to several members of Sonic Syndicate who they toured with them and they invited me.
Still, Sabaton in any language is an awesome live experience,
By far my favorite Sabaton song
As always a nice reaction, you beed to do all of them sabaton songs!
I would recommend The last battle or screaming eagles official video next 🤟
Been waiting for this one. Thankyou
Definitely need to add devil dogs to your list, it's a great song about the US marines from WW1 and the "live" video is very different from the others
Welcome back!! Congratulations on your baby girl! She’s adorable, you are going to be an amazing father!!
Thank you! 💪
First time I saw Sabaton was when they played a festival in my hometown. The location of said festival? Fredriksten Fortress, the stage was apx 250 yards from where Carolus Rex fell. This was when they where touring the "Heroes" album, but they did a one-off special Carolus Rex themed set for this festival
i was there. one of the last live performances before everything closed down. probably the best live show ive seen. it was just nonstop banger after banger. carolus rex and en livstid i krig was obviously epic but my surprise favorite was angels calling with apocalyptica.
Oh, not sure if it's been mentioned, (or if it's true), but back when Carolus Rex came out, I read that the Swedish version of the album was recorded in secret. It was just supposed to be released in English. (I suppose someone from the label had to know though.) At first live preview, they played the English version to a collection of critics and fans. After the first run they asked if they wanted to hear it again and played the Swedish version to wild cheers.
I love history, wasted too much on a history degree, so its fun to see ur reactions and the specific knowledge u have about the performance side I totally didnt know!
Congrats to you both so much!! ❤️❤️❤️🌹
Thank you!
Yay, Finally 😉😁 I'm gonna enjoy these 21:49 minutes of reaction. Thank you 🤘😎🤘
One of my most favorite songs ever, when I'm working a long day I always jam to this to get pumped and give me energy,. I fucking love Sabaton. Also I knew you'd like this one.
🤘🤘🤘
From the last show I saw before the pandemic. I hope for another one soon. /salute.
Next Sabaton reaction have to be No Bullets Fly Animated Story Video
I had a few Volvos over the years - mu black S60 was called Carolus!!
Love your reactions of Sabaton 🫶👏🤩🇸🇪
love you tank
Thanks again Tank. Always a pleasure to look at your videos. I think you're ready to react to the Caroliens Prayer. That's my favorite anyway. /Micke P
I was at this concert in Stockholm, one of the best concerts I've ever been at!
No Bullets Fly (animated video) needs to be next! It's an emotional roller coaster, and you need to watch through to the very end of the video. Such a great song, and it *will* make you feel things.
I love your reaction videos 😊
Thanks!
Would love to see Sabaton do a concert with a symphony it would be awesome.

Not gonna lie.. watching this teared me up a bit. I saw Sabaton February 22nd, 2020 in Denmark. It was by far the best concert I've ever been to, and this was one of the best songs they played. Might've cried a bit, being taken back to that.
Definitely relate to what you said about projected feeling of pride of other countries' heroes and achievements Sabaton sings about. One of my favourite Sabaton songs is Resist and Bite and everytime I listen to it I feel very proud of the Belgian soldiers and the Chasseurs Ardennais in perticular even though I'm Swedish. But that goes for most of their songs aswell, proud of the Greeks in Coat of Arms, the Polish in 40:1/Uprising, the Finns in White Death/Talvisota, and so on.
Love this song, and the comment about how smooth Hannes is with his drumming style. Having watched a lot of Sabaton during the last few weeks, in my opinion Hannes is the such a good fit for the band. In the context of Sabaton's music, Hannes hits like a one man artillery division, very impactful even when being more delicate.
First band I ever saw live was apocalyptica and I prefer the Swedish version it inspired my to try and learn to speak Swedish and that most of my favourite bands are from Sweden
When do we get more Amon Amarth Tank :) Love your channel its amazing
The Metal Genre is stronger than ever - worldwide. Sabaton takes the music to heart and really delivers for the fans, very worthy of the genre, and one of my TOP 10 all time favorite Metal bands
