  • Today I check out a song about one of the best fighter pilots in history, and absolutely love the sound and vibe of this song. A bit different from the normal sounding Sabaton song, but in the best way possible!

There is a running gag that Joakim doesn't like Swedish Pagans. So the crowd and the other band members have to force him to play this song. Thats why the crowd was singing this song so enthusiastic when he played it on the organ.

what's interesting about the pilots in WW1 is that they were literally the rock stars of their time. These guys were household names. they'd fly all day and spend the nights drinking in fancy chateaus or the nightclubs of Paris. The Trade-off was the life expectancy was about 2 weeks.

Sabaton had the single greatest crowd interaction I've ever seen live. I saw them in a small-ish club venue in Dublin and during one of the breaks Joakim told us that they had heard that there was a woman in the crowd whose 100th Sabaton show this was. Once they identified her (no surprise she was at the front!) they were like "holy shit, 100 shows, that's a lot. Y'know what, here's a deal, name any song and so long as we know it we'll play it next" and she picked Sabateurs and they fuckin' played Sabateurs next set list be damned. It was amazing.

I knew it was J.S.Bach but hadn't picked out the actual fugue - the style is unmistakable though.
I'd have probably found it for myself if I'd looked, but you saved me the trouble!
As a former orchestral violinist, I've played pieces by most of the great composers, and have a really soft spot for those of the Baroque period. I also love Mendelssohn, but he is a total bastard on his violinists - although it feels (and sounds) great when you get it right!

He was offered a singing job until they found another lead singer. Needless to say they never did! So he founded Sabaton in 99 with Pär :) He mentions this in one of the history episodes - I can’t recall which one. Hopefully the helpful comment people can help!

Well, you've been teased in the video for Swedish Pagans, so I'd recommend doing that one next. If you are able to do the one from Wacken 2019, that features Tina Guo, an awesome celloist. Alternatively, if you don't want to do that, I would recommend Soldier of Three Armies. It tell the story of Larry Thorne, a man who waged his own personal war against the Soviet Union. Every time the country he was fighting for surrendered, he would escape to another country that was at war with them and fight for them instead. He did this until his death. There is so much history that it required three Sabaton History videos to go through all of it.

Agree 100% on the crowd interaction. And what I love about these guys is that they not only involve the crowd - a lot of bands do the usual "put your hands up in the air" or "I can't hear you!" and other cliches -, but they also personalize their routine a little depending on where they play that night. In Budapest Joakim did a little "pálinka-song" before Red Baron (ua-cam.com/video/HeZLmhjnlzU/v-deo.html), and in one of the tour vlogs they showed Tommy speaking and singing in Italian when they were in Milano.
It's just heartwarming to see that they are willing to put a bit of extra effort and consideration into their performance

  • @MetalZoned

You know, Sabaton's music get's criticized a lot, not just for the lyrics, but because a lot of people say all their songs sound kinda the same, and then others are complaining that they're doing something different from time to time, like "The Red Baron" or "The end of the war to end all wars", to name just 2 from their latest album.

This Swedish Beer Tank Troup has an awsome crowd interaction. Once on a concert in 2016 (Heroes Tour in Oberhausen, Germany) Joakim even asked a few people during the concert, what song to play next. They could choose between "Smoking Snakes" and "Solider of three Armies". For their last song that evening ("Metal Crue") they saw a little boy in the audience and just asked him if he wanted to go to a safe place like the stage itself. So they actually got him on the f*cking stage. Very envious to that boy.

      - BEFORE releasing Attack of the Dead Men, they went to a Russian cover artist, and teased their song by him releasing the cover song (translated into Russian) FIRST!

The way it's spinning in the video it's easier for everyone to see the blades coming up from below, and thereby reducing the risk of anyone being hit by it. If it was spinning the correct way the blades would come down from above and it could hit someone in the head if they accidentally walk too close to it. Intentional is my guess. Cheers / B.

Double reaction - double comment :P
Actually I was at this very show - working at the beer stall ;) And obviously it was one of the days we had to prepare for a bit more demand. (Might add that we didn't cover the band supply.)
Technically I must be in the video - as one of the black pixels in the back of the arena...
If they want to fit a stage in it, the max capacity is a little below 10.000, but anyway this show was completely sold out, and one of the last fun big events before we went on hiatus...
Indeed they had quite a few quite long parts between songs with Joakim talking and interacting, and introducing support act Apocalyptica as guests one point - in the end even the line between goodbye/break/encore got blurred
He seemed honestly thankful for the fansupport - it was the band's biggest tour yet. In Berlin, their previous show drew 4-5000 people, and that was a double bill with Accept!
Since this song is from 'The Great War' album, obviously they played it on 'The Great Tour' for the first time.
What with all the puns... personally I found it a bit strange when they called the tour to 'The Last Stand': 'The Last Tour'... might be misleading?
But still hard to beat my all time favourite Deep Purple's 1998 'ABandOn-Tour' :D
I'm quite sure the Organ-plane was quietly pushed in from the side indeed. No idea who the player was.
Since the line-up was changed early in the band's carreer, they normally use backing tracks, to my understanding played by Joakim in the studio. The early band had a keyboard player - the reunion of both line-ups at the Wacken anniversary is still highly recommended I guess...
A lot of people aiming for real hammond organ sounds seem to use Nord these days... I guess they are one of the first few brands who had the details of that down....... or maybe I just notice them the most because of the genious color trademark :P
