Charles XII of Sweden is the king to which this song refers. This particular album goes back to the greatest expansion of the Swedish Empire and how it subsequently turned out. For instance, another song from this album "1648" refers to the siege of Prague by the Swedish army. Joakim Brodén, the lead vocalist, is half-Czech, which might partly explain where that particular part of inspiration came from.

What i find cool about 1648 is that in Swedish its apparently sung from the perspective of a Swedish soldier, while in English its from the Czech defenders perspective, not sure if its true,i saw multiple Swedes say it is,but i dont speak Swedish so... :D

Charles XII, sometimes Carl (Swedish: Karl XII) or Latinized to Carolus Rex (17 June 1682 - 30 November 1718 O.S.), was the King of Sweden from 1697 to 1718. He belonged to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, a branch line of the House of Wittelsbach.

@RandomOrForgotten You sound like you don't know the horrors of the times that are covered on the Carolus Rex album. For example, Germany lost 40% of its population in the Thirty Years' War. While there are problems in today's Europe it's laughable to compare to what happened back in those days.

Carolus is latin for Charles in english or Karl in Swedish. Rex is king in latin. The song is about Karl XII of Sweden who became king at a very young age. Emidiately Russia, Denmark and Poland declared war on Sweden beliving the kingdom would fall easily with its young ruler. It didn’t.

And yes, Sabaton's themes deals with all kinds of historical events/figures from various centuries. And it fits with power metal's "epic" themes aspect.
But if we're talking about historical themes, I'll throw a suggestion for "1914", a great death metal band who deals solely with WW1. "The Blind Leading the Blind " was one of the best albums of 2018... So why not, 1914 - "the hundred days offensive"

Sabaton was my introduction to metal, and I still love them 10 years later....
Carolus Rex was Carl XII., king of Sweden in early 18th century - he rose to his throne in 15 years of age, and was attacked by coalition of neighbouring states, because he was seen and too young and weak. And he beat their a*ses all the way to Russia...before eventually losing due to attrition and lost morale of his armies...
Suggestions for other songs: They've done a lot of like....classic power metal songs - Night Witches, Ghost Division, Resist and Bite...as well as some, let's say, interesting mixes of genres - Ballad of the Bull, To Hell and Back, Caroleans Prayer maybe...
You could also do live performances - Swedish(obviously), Polish, German and Czech crowds are wild....especially when songs are about their nations(Uprising, 40:1 for Poland; Far Away from Fame for Czechia...)
Videos from polish Woodstock festival would be nice, or maybe czech Masters of Rock - they actually have orchestra with them for last few performances, and it sounds epic.

Karl (Charles) XII of Sweden (born June 17, 1682) fell in battle on November 30, 1718 in Fredrikshald, Norway. He became king in 1697, he was then 14 years old. His leadership and tactical skills contributed to the Swedish forces' initial triumphs during the war, and in 1706 he had defeated almost all participants, Denmark-Norway, Saxony-Poland except Russia. On 28/6 1709, the battle in Poltava was fought against Peter I of Russia. Thus, the 100-year-old superpowership power stepped into the grave.

Pär was the initial founder of the band. Joakim came in some time later when they were looking for a keyboardist. Then he got to singing and it sounded better than what the others could provide with. Hannes was the drum tech for Snowy Shaw so he worked with Sabaton since around 2013-14. He applied for the job as the drummer hen they were looking for a new one and he got it. Thorbjörn Englund joined the band in 2012 along with Chris Rörland and Robban Bäck but left the band in 2017 to write music of his own and. Robban left in 2013 but got hastily replaced with Snowy Shaw, a former member of Dream Evil. The bands current lineup is Joakim Brodén: vocals and keyboard, Pär Sundström: bass, Hannes Van Dahl: drums, Tommy Johansson and Chris Rörland: guitar.

The first band members left in 2012 because they didn't want to tour as much as they did. Thobbe left in 2017 because he wanted to make his own music. Robban left in 2013-14 because he wanted to take some time off to be with his family and new born daughter. Snowy Shaw left because he was only a temporary drummer for the band.

Nightwish didn't switch singers for sound reasons. Their first singer Tarja stopped caring about the music in Nightwish and grew distant from the rest of the band, she wanted to do more bigger venues and thought Nightwish was holding her back. She chose to leave the band after doing one final farewell concert and picked going solo. Not to mention toumas had a secret crush on her, after she married someone else things just went South and got awkward. One of their songs "ever dream" was based off toumas's feelings for bandmate Tarja.
With Anette it just didn't work out because of her personality off stage. She didn't get along with a certain said member of the band, it got to a point where enough was enough and so the band took a vote and dumped her.
The reason for the sound differences was because Nightwish founder toumas wanted to go to a different direction after Tarja. Then after Anette he wanted to find someone who can do just about anything, both Tarjas style and Anette. Floor was the perfect replacement.
The band knew floor from when she was lead vocals in her old band after forever, they used to tour with her and knew she would be a perfect fit.

Sabaton only changed their members a couple of times, Think its 3 or so that been changed during 20 years. 2 left in 00´s when band wanted to go full out touring 200+ days a year! About Nightwish its been the singers, 3 since they started in 90´s with Tarja as the bands front singer when they where formed!

I think Jay has a man crush on Joakim Broden! Carolus Rex-- King Charles the 12th of Sweden-- He ruled in the late 1600's to the early 1700's.

You should listen to #mustasch "Yaras song" It's named after a 7 year old palestinian girl who was sent to live with her uncle and his wife in sweden after her school in gaza was bombed. 15 months later she was dead, beaten to death by the uncles wife. They found 255 different injuries, old and new, on her tiny body.

The song is about Carolus Rex, King Charles XII of Sweden, one of three people insane enough to try to invade Russia. Did not work out. Thanks to his failed wars Sweden fell from the height of its power. He was ultimately killed in battle when trying to invade Norway.
This song is somewhat of an outlier in Sabatons catalog. It is slower, churning. Most of their songs are faster. I recommend listening to "Night Witches".

Sabaton write songs about war from the soldiers perspective without taking sides and as such can honor heroism and sacrifice from even the darkest moments in human history as a Brit I find Bismarck moving because while the Nazi regime was a cancer and as a nation we felt anger at the sinking of HMS Hood we always respected the courage of those 2000 men who defied the most powerful navy the world had ever seen and fought too the bitter end.
As an American I think you would enjoy the lost battalion from the last stand album

All of their songs and lyrics are related to historical battles, such as wars and the heroes of those wars. Sabaton is Antonios favorite band, from A-P Reacts. They've reacted to pretty much every song and video and thats how I became a fan. BTW, there is a swedish version of this song. Also, a newer band, Follow the Cipher, did a cover of this song and it's pretty good. They are a female fronted band also from Sweden, please check them out, and next please check out Night Witches from Sabaton! I think that is their best song imo! It's more faster and upbeat!

Here’s what you wanted to know about Nightwish.
    Turunen’s Dismissal
The four other members of Nightwish had decided that it was best to continue Nightwish without Turunen. After a concert in the Hartwall Areena (Helsinki) on October 21, 2005, recorded for the live DVD End of an Era (released June 2006), they expressed their decision through an open letter which was given to Turunen by Holopainen, and afterwards posted on the band's website. It was written by Holopainen and signed by all four band members. The main justification given in the letter for Turunen's dismissal was that the band felt that both her husband Marcelo Cabuli (an Argentine businessman) and commercial interests had changed her attitude towards the band.
Turunen responded to the incident twice, during press conferences in Finland and Germany, saying that her dismissal came entirely as a shock to her, given that she had not been notified before the letter was given to her She felt that the personal attacks on her husband were unwarranted, and that playing the issue out in public was "senselessly cruel". She expressed these feelings through her own open letter, which was published on her personal website, and through various TV, magazine, and newspaper interviews.
    Annette Olson’s Departure
On October 1, 2012, Nightwish announced via their Facebook page that they were parting ways with Olzon. According to the press statement, "it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover". This announcement came days after Olzon fell ill at a show in Denver, Colorado and was unable to perform. Nightwish used replacement singers from the opening band, Kamelot, and Olzon later expressed her disappointment, saying "I was never asked if it was OK that they used Elize and Alissa in the show [Friday] night [...] I don't think it's a good decision they made and I'm sorry for those of you who came to see the whole band but got something else. But I was very ill and this decision wasn't mine." According to the statement, Dutch singer Floor Jansen (ex-After Forever, ReVamp) would sing for the remainder of the Imaginaerum World Tour.
On January 11, 2013, Olzon announced on her official blog that she was pregnant with her third child, due in spring 2013. This was a contributing factor to her being dismissed. The band then released a statement on their website declaring that the reason Olzon gave for her dismissal and other statements she made were untrue and that Olzon herself had agreed to help find a replacement while she was on maternity leave. Later on, Olzon gave several interviews in which she told that she never agreed with a replacement, even when she was pregnant, and proposed to the band to postpone the tour, culminating on her firing. She also added that she was against Jansen joining the band in her period of maternity, mainly because of the difference in their vocal styles.
In a 2015 interview, Holopainen said the band "emerged stronger" from the line-up changes it went through.
    Arrival of Floor Jansen
In an interview with Metal Hammer in November 2012, Tuomas Holopainen stated that they already had a rehearsal place booked from July 2014 to September 2014, but before they began rehearsing the band members would be taking a break from Nightwish for several months.
Floor Jansen (left) and Troy Donockley (right) were made official members in 2013, turning the band into a sextet for the first time.
On October 9, 2013, Nightwish announced Jansen as the permanent replacement for Olzon.
