- Hey guys this is my first reacction to Sabaton and WOW It was an experience I wish I could have for the first time again. This song was actually crazy and Im glad I reacted to it. Hope yall enjoyed and if there is anything else yall wonna see let me know!
The guy on the picture was indeed him. He became king of Sweden 1697, at 15 years old.
Three years later Denmark, Saxony, Poland-Lithuania and the Russian Empire formed an alliance and declared war on Sweden. Expecting the young king to crumble under their pressure.
With the help of Great Britain, the Swedes managed to force Denmark's surrender while Charles himself focused on Russia in the east. Personally leading his soldiers on the battlefield.
After defeating Saxony and Poland he focused completely on Russia, got struck by hubris and thought that he could march on the Russian capital.
After a harsh Russian winter the Swedish forces suffered heavy attritions and a devastating defeat at Poltava.
Sweden never fully recovered from that defeat and the Swedish Empire started to crumble. Meanwhile Charles had fled to the Ottoman Empire and lived there in exile for some time.
Until the Ottomans got fed up with him being there. They took him prisoner after a dramatic skirmish against him and his royal guard.
When Charles finally made it back to Sweden he raised new forces, intending to invade Norway. During his siege of Fredriksten fortress, the Swedish king was shot in the head and died where he stood, at the age 36.
A large part of his rule happened in the saddle as he led one campaign after another.
As capable as he was, he broke the second rule of war: Never fight a land war in Asia. It's only ever going to end one way.
Even if he'd invaded Russia first after the ass-kicking he delivered at Narva--and it was a SERIOUS ass-kicking, it wouldn't be until the next year the Russians would even come close to ending the shortage of personal equipment he caused (the artillery took even longer to replace, since Charles had captured a considerable portion of everything they had), something even more devastating once you consider just how much of the Russian army he'd destroyed in that single battle--he'd still have been screwed in the end. Hell, he probably could have taken the capital at that point. It just wouldn't have mattered.
No matter how good you are, you absolutely do not have the manpower needed to force a country as large as Russia into submission by invasion alone. The more ground you take, the easier it is for them to counterattack and send you back to wherever you came from.
@@JoJoLewis He's definitely one of the legendary badasses when it comes to national leaders. The fact Voltaire actually loved him enough to write his biography should be testament enough to that, but what really seals the deal is a quote from Charles himself.
After hearing the gunfire in his first real battle, he's said to have calmly proclaimed "This shall hence become my music."

Another good history metal band is Ex Deo, though they're considerably heavier and focus entirely on the Roman Empire. "I, Caligvla" and...basically the entire album about the Second Punic War, but especially "The Rise of Hannibal" being some of their best work.
For a live performance, I would suggest "En livstid i krig" (A lifetime of war) live in Gothenburg. They sing in Swedish, but they have captions so you can follow along.

Being Polish-American, I never thought Uprising, 40:1 or Winged Hussars could be topped. But THIS song…this song doesn’t rock…IT RULES.
@@JoJoLewis you should listen to panzerkampf (the biggest tank battle in history), Stalingrad (one of the bloodiest battles in ww2), Bismarck (the biggest battleship ever built by a European power, and the flagship of the German navy of ww2), steel commanders (which tells the whole history of tank warfare) primo Victoria (about operation overlord or the D-day) or ghost division (about the German commander erwin rommel's tank division in ww2 who conquered France almost alone thanks to their speed, and defeated the british in Africa many times) from sabaton

He was tougher than he looks. He used to lead the soldiers into battle - in the front, not sitting back letting the soldiers do the dangerous job by themselves. That is also how he died, inspecting the siege of the the Fredriksten fortress outside Halden, Norway.
Just as Alexander the great, no one could question his devotion. Karl lead by example.
And there is speculation that he was fragged by one of his own men.

@@kingseb2252 Honestly, I think that if everyone who started a war was required to lead it from the front we'd see a lot fewer wars. Carolus was one of those leaders just built differently.
One of Sweden's kick ass Kings, Sweden's image now a days as neutral and a peace broker is not how it use to be. It is nice that we decided to go with peace after the Napoleonic wars. We did get Norway from Danmark after the war and had a small war with Norway in 1814, and we almost had a war when Norway when they broke out of the union in 1905. The Swedish king was ready to go to war but the people of Sweden said no to war with strikes and protests.

@@JoJoLewisYes, there is a unofficial full concert video from the last show they did in Denver. They should have played several more shows but Judas Priest that they toured with had to cancel as one of their bandmembers got heartproblem or cancer. The show in Denver is almost three hours long as Sabaton promised to compensate for the cancelled tour by playing untill they dropped. It hard to react to maybe and it is unofficiell so who knows about copyrights etc. But it is a really funny gig to see.

I have listened to this song regularly for a long time now, and always loved this, hard to put it, just shere epicness of the character described and its portrayal, combined with of course amazing musical aspects framing it all beautifully. But I never really saw someone else's opinion on it, and literally this whole video I was like a child watching a friend see something super exciting and amazing for the first time while you already saw it yourself. Love your reactions, a great mix of more musical reaction, emotional/personal comments and just overall very chill and one of the best of these kinds of channels i know. Keep it up :D

Ah, Carolus Augustus, young military war king that led the small army of Sweden to trounce russia, poland, the danes and Norway. Died ingloriously by a random grape shot one late night. It was a siege and he was in the front trenches alone observing the defences, was found dead with a hole the size of a fist punched through the side of his temple.
He was first believed to have been assassinated by one of his own men but today we know after opening his grave and checking with more modern autopsy techniques that it was cannon grape shot (which is basically a big shotgun type of ammunition for cannons).

Refreshing to see someone start off their Sabaton rabbithole with every oldschool Sabaton fans favourite song, that being said you need to do the usual suspects too. "No bullets fly" animated story, "Night witches" animated story, "Christmas truce" that you already did, "Fields of verdun" official video, "Bismarck" official video, "Steel commanders" official video, and then we get to the live ones.
"40:1" at Polish Woodstock, "Uprising" at Polish Woodstock, "Ghost division" at, you guessed it, Polish Woodstock, "En livstid i krig" you already did but from also The Great Tour live preformances of "Night witches" (yes again), "The red baron", "Carolus rex" (with guests so more drums = more epic), "Attack of the dead men" and "82nd all the way" you should probably do the official video, the cover by Amaranthe, and the live preformance they do together. There is also a bunch of Wacken live videos but they risk getting blocked because Wacken is a stinky no fun place for youtubers.
A few oldies but goldies are "To hell and back", "Primo victoria", "Shiroyama", "Price of a mile", "Midway", "Blood of bannockburn", "Gott mit uns" and ofcourse who could forget the always unexpected arrival of the "Winged hussars".
Now this is just if you want to have a better idea of what the song is about but checking out their chanel Sabaton History where you get a 15-20 minute video with the god of history Indy Neidell with his exquisite voice and way of speaking explain the theme of the song to you in a way that is more addicting than crack. Then you also have a short segment with a band member, usually Joakim or Pär (the 2 remaining original band members, but we have a few suprise appearances) talking about what led them to writing the song or what it means to them or just general goofing around. If you want to watch these episodes then personally id recommend you watch them before reacting to the song so you can have more of a clue of what the lyrics mean, but they do play snippets of the song during the history episodes so if you think that'd ruin it for you you can watch them after ofcourse.
Thats about all that i have to say on the Sabaton topic but as this seems to be a fairly small channel and Sabaton reactions do really well i hope i atleast gave you something you can work with.

Sabaton is awesome! Great reaction! Definitely check out “Bismarck”, “Ghost Division”, “Uprising”, and “40 to 1” all live at Woodstock, also “The Last Stand” and “Night Witches” are favorites of mine as well. Their brand new song “The Christmas Truce” is phenomenal as well.

I would recommend Uprising, the official video, plus Uprising live in Poland Woodstock 2012. It’s about the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. I have NEVER heard a crowd sing that LOUD. Make it a double header.
I recommend "Stormtroopers", "Lady of the dark", "Back in Control", or any song in the Carolus Rex playlist such as Ruina Imperii as they hit quite hard hard on beat except for Ruina Imperii, that hits hard emotionally
Charles was fifteen years old when he was to be crowned king of Sweden. But outside the Church he said no, I aint getting crowned by the church. So he took the crown, waltzed into the church, up to the altar. There, in front of all the important people of Sweden, he disregared all tradition of coronation and placed the crown on his own head. Declaring himself King. From there on he ruled Sweden from the battlefield. Fighting on the frontlines, until his death, 36 years old.
I learnt about Charles XII of Sweden
when I was working in Estonia
as he was for for Estonia a disaster
as he ended up losing Estonia to the Russians
who held onto it until the Russian Revolution
two hundred years later.
I learnt about him as losing the Great Northern War
which effectively dismantled the Swedish Empire
and transferring power to Russia under Peter I
He was also the last absolutist monarch at least until Gustav III.
Something that sets Sabaton apart is how well they use their songs to match the story, much like John Williams does with all he has composed for famous movies. For example, in Nightwitches they start of somewhat distant and low like that of the planes creeping their way to the target, it explodes into a massive song full of intensity like that of the bombs dropped, and then it goes back to a fade as the planes drift away to silence. They do this with so many of their songs and Carolus Rex is no exception. Following those lines, please react to an older, and sadly much overlooked song, called Unbreakable. It's about the concept of guerrilla warfare in general, the element of surprise, no mercy, relentless attack until your enemy is erased. Somehow they were able to still capture that mentality through sound. Starting subtle and calculated, hiding until the moment to strike is right, and turning into a fuckn monster, Unleashing hell on the battlefield and their enemies. Please check and react!!!!
This song was recorded with both Swedish and English. The Swedish lyrics are even more direct. And yes, Karl XII was quite a character. He stepped on the throne during Sweden's "Stormaktstid", or "time of being a great nation", and he had grand ambitions to retake lost territories and push Swedish territory into Russia, possibly toppling Russia.
He had great success in several battles, and, shall we say, not so much in others. He ended up getting shot to death by a musket loaded with a button. His still blood flecked uniform is on display in Stockholm.
Sabatons don't have "fans", they have an army.
He literally showed up to his cronation with the crown already on his head proclaiming that the church had no say in the matter. In his mind he had been chosen by god himself to fight and expand for Sweden. He lead his fighters into war and fought his enemies himself in every battle. He was crowned at 15 years old and never saw any use in getting married. Apparently in his first battle once he heard the gunshots of the enemies approaching it is said that he calmy proclaimed "This shall henceforth become my music". To me he will always be a legend.
I'm just catching up on your Sabaton reactions and I would highly recommend To Hell And Back. It's tells the story of Audie Murphy - the most decorated soldier in US military history and his post-war struggle with PTSD or shell-shock as it was known then. Another great suggestion would be Ghost Division about Erwin Rommel's 7th Armored Panzer division who over the course of a single night penetrated more than 200km into the enemy lines, taking the bodies of their own fallen comrades in an act of blitzkrieg that was so intense and fast German high command had no idea of their whereabouts and forevermore the 7th Armored would strike fear into the hearts of their enemies with the reputation of being The Ghost Division.

The political norm in Europe in those was the absolute monarchy. It meant that the monarch held absolute power without any parliament, even though the royal council (government) was still there. The position of the monarch as the leader of the realm was, not just in this system, seen as something that God had decided.
In the Old testament, he choses and aid Saul and David and all of the other monarchs of Israel except for the corrupt ones. In the same way the monarchs and the state ruled by God's decree. It is actually the archbishop who is placing the crown on their heads so it's both a state ceremony and a religious one. In China, Japan, Egypt etc, the king or emperor was seen as a living god among mortal men.
This is just Sabatons way of expressing the mentality of the absolute monarchy. Charles was actually both a very intelligent and very rational person. We got lot's of examples of his politics and his big interest in mathematics and science. But not interested in luxury. He was also a very good tactican. Unfortunatley, the war got in in the way.

Yes it was a real person, king Charles the 12th.
Im not a history buff so despite actually being swedish I dont know If he was the one who did it or if he was the one who inherited it but it was duing "Stormaktstiden" or "The great era" when Sweden owned about half of europe and a part of Russia.
It eventually lead to revolt and Charles suffered heavy casualties in fighting the russians and the empire crumbled.
But yea, he was a pretty extraordinary dude, regardless of what one thinks of his values or actions.
He, unlike almost any other king, actually lead his own troops on the battlefield.
No matter if you agree with him, thats a pretty badass thing to do.
Check out 40:1, its one of the most badass war stories ever and a fantastic song.

Hi JoJo, greetings from the Netherlands. I really enjoyed your reaction. Sabaton is great. If you like experiencing music this way, I might have an interesting recommendation for you. Try listening to Nightwish! They are a symphonic metal band from Finland and they’re top notch in this genre. Their singer is the Dutch Floor Jansen. She has one of the best female voices in metal today. Fun fact; she's married to Sabaton's drummer. Nightwish is very diverse, none of their songs are alike. There are epic and melodic songs, like the one I’m recommending now, but they can also go really heavy on you and the next song could be very celtic sounding or even jazzy. Their music is exceptionally well composed and arranged. The lyrics are very powerful and poetic. Nightwish is best appreciated LIVE. Give the song ‘Ghost Love Score’ a try. Carolus Rex is latin for King Charles. The only king in Sweden that said that he was crowned by God, and not by the church. If you have not, check out "The lion from the north" with Sabaton. But others, like live shows from wacken can be copyright claimed because its the property of wacken. But those can usually also be found on Sabatons own channel. If you're lucky, you can get invited to one of their shows as a handful of rewivers already have. Sabaton are chill.

Carolus Rex was only 15 when he was crowned king over Sweden. The enemies ( Russia, Saxony-Poland and Denmark/Norway ) saw the possibility to regain land by declearing war against Sweden. Little did they know that that young king mastered the rules of war and though the Caroleans mostly had less soldiers than their enemy, they won battles and struck fear into their enemy.
