  • Bonjour à tous,
This week at the chateau is an exciting day, the last room to get decorated is at the stage for the main pieces of furniture. The kitchen is the heart of any home and yet this will only be for Terry and Ash it still needs to be special and fit in with the room, plus this will be the only kitchen in the chateau till the family restore the main kitchen in the basement.
Tracy, Terry & Ash go shopping searching for that perfect kitchen to go on the third floor, but what style will there go with and will it fit?

    About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

@@ashleywaters7198 Ash, Is it the farmhouse/apron sink style you like so much or the material it is made of? It looked like a stone. It was difficult to see the details? I couldn’t really see much from the brief shots of them from the video. Hope everyone is well.

I just built a new kitchen myself. I would highly recommend ALL Drawers on the lower units. No crawling on your knees to find things in the back is a game changer.
Also, any pre-made cabinets can be fit to any space and drawer fronts can be customized to get the look you want.
It's always worth it to spend a little more to get what you really want. A kitchen is not the space to cut corners.
Good luck, I know it will be beautiful

I wholeheartedly agree about having drawers below the work counters. Kneeling down to locate what you need is a bummer! This I know from living in several contractor-grade built homes (60+ years) where they are cutting costs to increase profit. Lucky that you can customize!!

Yes drawers. I have had them since 2013. Also look into induction cooktop or portable induction piece. Cooks things quickly and burner doesn’t heat up a small space. Also look into an air fryer. There are charts for suggested times of various meats, vegetables etc to cook.

When I put a new kitchen in, it turned out to be much less expensive to have it custom built than to buy from a store. Everything was built to fit my specific space - which your kitchen definitely needs. Plus - no compromises, you get to customize everything.

Guys, we restored a Grade II Listed Georgian house in Malvern Worcestershire before moving to Devon. I built the kitchen from scratch. I used 2x1 inch roofing battens for the frame (light sanding) 3/4 ply for the carcass sides and inside shelves chose the perfect sink and taps. For the worktops 2x 3/4 thick 2ft wide pine, nice moulding on front and oiled the tops. Wife chose the doors which were painted olive green. The wall tiles were Pilkington crackle dark green glazed tiles and we purchased a Range master bottle green with gold dial cooker. I made open shelf units for the walls and found a old school glazed wall cupboard which we lit up. We saved a fortune and was very pleased with the finish. Wish you well in the quest for the perfect kitchen.

I don't know how things are sold in France but usually you choose a style of cabinet and then choose a stain or paint from a selection and the sink is a separate purchase so you can have whatever one you want. So if you have take what you see then a custom made or bespoke kitchen would be the way to go. I'd go for country/farm house for the Chateau since it's first a home, second a old Chateau and not a large kitchen nor in any way a industrial kitchen or space.

The best features I’ve noticed in new kitchens is the transition from doored lower storage to deep drawers. It’s so much nicer to pull out a drawer and have full access to the contents. With doored storage, you’re down on hands and knees to find whatever is in the back of the cupboard. Please consider the additional expense, which is worth it over the long term. 🌺

I think that you will figure it out even if you get a few stock pieces and customize them with elements you like yourselves even the metal and barn door and metal label holder . You tube and furniture flippers add those elements . Don’t forget old wood library cards files . For industrial look soft close drawers the big roll around tool boxes are being used which wood cabinetry for the farm house industrial look. No matter what route you take it will be lovely

What about 3 antique pieces. a large buffet (cutting hole for a sink). A large hutch or wardrobe (which you'd need to add shelves),that would hold everything (dishes, pots ,pans, food etc), then a table against a wall for a countertop . Perfect chateau kitchen and one of a kind ! peace&love from America

I did that in a kitchen and loved it. We had wallpaper and open shelves above the sink. A big antique buffet and China cabinet worked well in the space. We had one pantry cabinet from a big box store in the corner. Of course it wasn't a chateau but simply a Victorian bungalow. We did eventually put in a new kitchen for resale but I liked the old one better.

Thinking harmoniously for the chateau period a farmhouse kitchen would be the best fit. The dark bases with a french piano range would be gorgeous with lighter uppers or even open shelves for display if you are neat….double farmhouse sink would tie in.

The sink Ash likes is it blue stone Pierre Bleu I had a solid sink and work tops in Pierre Bleu with oak oiled with grey oil when we lived in Brussels. I loved it as a sink it's the best l have ever had BUT as work tops they are beautiful but it is a soft stone not like granite or quartz so you have to have a chopping board and don't put hot pans on it and when it gets a bit dull you have to clean it and re oil it with linseed oil the company will tell you how to do it and you can get them cheaper if you have a more basic style you can also find them in salvage yards for good prices too.
But it was worth it I've moved many times to different countries in the last 40yrs but I loved that kitchen the most

I think the custom kitchen is such a better idea. Your kitchen is small and quirky. It needs a kitchen planned for all its unique characteristics! I know they can be pricey, but there’s one thing about custom you don’t have to do it all at the same time, Have the plan drawn decide which you can afford have him build that, then the next stage when the money is saved for the next part. I’d had my kitchen done like that at my lakehouse. The main part essentials first then the remained later. Worked great because after I got in there to work I changed my mind about how things worked for me.

Having done several kitchens over the years, I offer the following: Think long and hard about sliding doors, they can be annoying. Deep pot drawers are a godsend, they will keep you from burrowing in the back of lower cabinets. Amazon in Canada has the barndoor hardware kit for cabinets for under CA$100. If you get your cabinets custom made, the hardware could all be your choice.

Hope the quote comes in at an afordable price ??? I am happier with bespoke when I can afford it . The sink from your local is wonderful I can see what you love about it Ash also think about the height of your bench tops I am 5"7" and had mine raise by 50cm as low benches tables etc give me a sore back. I cannot stand for a long period any more so had my sink cupboard modified so I could sit at the sink to do the washing up (Have no need of a dishwasher). Open the doors and put my feet on bottom shelf, middle shelf was shortened to allow for knees. I purchased one those ergonomic draftsmens adjustable chairs to sit on . Makes it much easier to work in the kitchen . All my cabinets go to the floor too, or the roof, I do not like cabinets on legs or ones that do not go to the ceiling as cleaning both is a problem . In my case that is because of age but remember none of us gets younger. Cheers Guys Lana Australia

Hopefully a helpful suggestion: If you are planning on hand-washing your dishes it would be better to have a double basin sink rather than one basin and a drainboard. One basin to wash in, one basin to rinse in, drain on the counter. If you are using a dishwasher, then it makes no difference. Best wishes!

Only have minimal cupboard doors have more deep drawers with soft closing save your backs . If your on a budget IKEA have great looking kitchens in the style your looking for and the almost come in all colours . You must talk to the shop assistants to ease your curiosity rather than go away still not knowing about what you see and like.🇦🇺🙋‍♀️

Yep, natural wood, textured baskets, subdued color palette. Slight modern industrial touches (we have galvanized tin trim in our kitchen & living room).
Looking forward to the whole lalaselle house walk-thru!🙆🏻‍♀️

Since your beams are all darker once they have been oiled, a lighter wood would keep the focus on the beams. I like a farmhouse sink, and I’ve had butcher block wood counter tops for 8 years. They’re not hard to keep up. I used a mix of custom and pre- made and did a lot of the work myself. Whatever you decide, you two are the ones that have to live with it, so take your time and get it right

Give Ash his sink, it can be done and the one you picked out fits in the best. Can you order extra cabinets to build in fridge? You guys have so much talent I know you could make it work!!

Like the sink but the kitchen upstairs needs light wood and those glass cupboards would add visual depth to the room. Love thoughtful planning.

I LOVE the unit with the sliding black doors. Ashes sink would be lovely with it. I agree you need large lower drawers for sauce pans. My favourite day out looking for Kitchens.
