Friend told me a story once of a Syrian guy that he knew. He moved to Italy for a job, learned Italian. He moved to Germany, learned German. He moved to Sweden, learned English.

Germany has changed a lot in that regard, depending on your environment. Since education has put more and more value into the english language, each generation has gotten more and more proficient in it. Its not as extreme as in sweden, but its going in that direction.

So true about learning Swedish and Swedes want to speak English. It took me at least 6 months to start feeling comfortable speaking and understanding Swedish because so many wanted to speak English with me.

Have a language sign at your desk, one side marked "I'm open to speaking English" and the other marked "Please assist me with my Swedish" ??
Working in a job where we have multiple English speaking colleagues I can relate, its the same for us, sometimes someone at a meeting comments, hey, we are all Swedish in this meeting, we do not need to talk English" :) because the default in most meetings is to use English.
But yes it does mean that those colleagues will have a harder time learning Swedish.
And I think this is even more common in any developer related work since more or less all documentation will be in English anyway.
But it does present a problem whenever there is text to write for customers since all customer communication is in Swedish in the application (for reasons).
The Netherlands is much the same. GL trying to learn Dutch, because at the slightest hint of us detecting you speak English, we switch. :')
I feel like I progressed a lot in my Dutch when I speak to people and they switch to English on their second sentence, instead of their first.

As a german who did an exchange in sweden, I can agree a lot :D I wish I practiced more, but its just too tempting to switch back to english for convenience...
The same kind of thing happens in Thailand, but there the Thais see an English speaker as a chance to practice their English.

Lol. The "annoying" switch to English happens is because you guys are all very well educated, as a country. Not really a problem but a statement to your education system.
As a Canuck I have to say Swedish people are some of the nicest people and companies I get to work with.
Of course we have a word in Swedish for nom. I would say the Gothenburgish slang word "möla" fits pretty well.

A lot is lost when languages and dialects die out but a lot is gained when global communication is easy for everyone. English is a weird language but if it weren't so amalgamated it probably also wouldn't be in a position to be so widely known.
What is Swedish for "nom". Mums is probably the closest.

@@MiniChonch Im pretty sure "flyttar" should be something more like "rör" since "flyttar" kind of implies a third person perspective, like "I move this cup". I think the way it is is technically correct, but no one would ever say it like that. I just realized im thinking too deeply on this and it isnt important.
